Irish Wolfhounds with Goats -livestock guardians-
Hi do you supplement them food or is foraging in the forest enough to meet their dietary needs? If you do feed them what and how roughly? Cool channel just subscribed
Thank you for sharing, what a great skill to teach. Does she still like to help?
How long did it take for the pigs to clear one section
This is just peaceful to watch. Amazing!
Nice. Where are you located?
I guess those tires are for turf as well. The tread depth would be considered 45% on actual farm tractor tires.
The tire's are easy on the turf. But, sometimes I sure do need more traction. These R4 tires are terrible for mud! Thanks for your comment.
Your calm voice reminds me of those hypnotically narrated How Its Made documentaries ua-cam.com/video/eMJk4y9NGvE/v-deo.html
Surfs Up Brah! We wear those hats surfing out at Montauk Point NY
Do you raise them for meat?
We have them primarily for dairy. But, meat is a byproduct of raising any kind of goat.
How much do you need to feed them veggies when they are clearing a forest area like that?
Normal feeding is required. Everything in the forest is just extra. But, If you have an entire hillside full of oak tress that are dropping acorn's. That would be a different story. Thanks for your question.
@@MyrtlePointHeritageFarm thank you
have you tried the step in post? IMO it makes it easier to move the fence where the pigs have been and takes out the raking
Thanks for your comment! We use step in fencing here on the farm for varies things. But, its very expensive...compared to hand split posts. Also aluminum wire is much stronger with better conductive properties, better for predators.
Pigs are just like little bull dozers.
Does your free range smell?
Hi Ricky, Thanks for your question. Around my training pen if the weather is warm it can have a smell after being wet for several days. But, in the forested areas it never has any smell. I'm sure if you left the pigs in an area long enough it would start to have a smell to it. That would be a good sign that it's time to move the pigs to another area. Cheers.
This is I am looking forward to do after my fully retired
Do you prefer 1 breed of hog over another for forest pasturing?
No, they all work the same really. Other than your end product...some pigs are more for lard like a Berkshire and some are more for meat like a Tamworth. If you plan on overwintering get something that has a little hair on it to help keep it warm.
Thoughts on pig vs goats for clearing raw land?
Thanks for your question. Pigs will cultivate the land rooting and turning the soil bringing rocks and debris to the surface. Goats will eat the shrubs, bushes, and trees. creating more grass land over time. Using Pigs and Goats is the fastest way to clear land with animals. First use the goats to eat all the greens then bring in the pigs to root it all up. Good luck with our adventure!
What does one need to do to protect them from coyotes? Will that electric wire serve that purpose as well? Thanks!
Electric fencing would work fine for protecting against coyotes. But, I would also feel more comfortable having a few livestock guardian dogs around to keep an eye on things. I would also make the electric fence at least five strands or more high, the more better and close together. A good trick is to wire on a tuna can with bacon grease in it or something like that to a live wire...bait them in. One lick and they won't be back! Good luck with your adventure :)
How long did it take them to clear the land?
It usually take a couple years for the pigs to clear the paddocks that I put them in. But, really it all depends on the size of the area and the number of pigs. Thanks for your question!
@@MyrtlePointHeritageFarm thanks for replying, I wanted to use this method to clear some fields but it takes a while. However its a good idea.
Great video!
Do you feed straight brewers grain only or do you supplement with or pig feeds? Thanks
You can feed just brewers gains if you have a good grazing area, but you will get a smaller sized pig at harvest. The best way to use it is to mix with a hog feed. I've also added molasses to the brewery grains to encourage them to eat more. Good Luck! Thanks for your comment.
I wont berkshire piglets
That is a lot of goats. we only have 3 and 1 sheep.
This is a native pigs?
No, we don't have native pigs where we live. But they are a heritage breed.
Great idea bro
Thanks for the video. On part of our property we have 2 acres of aspen forest that was recently logged, so it’s just an open mess and looks like a tornado went through. Would this be something to put pigs on? Would they assist with tree crowns lying on the ground, stumps, fallen brush, etc? This area is also no longer shaded at all, gets full sun all day. We’re hoping to turn it into pasture. Thank you.
Absolutely...The pigs would root through it making it much easier to clean up. At the same time fertilizing the soil for your future pasture. Good luck with your project!
@@MyrtlePointHeritageFarm thanks so much
Love a man who, like me, takes care of his John Deere equipment. Masterfully done sir!
Thanks for the video. My 4066r w backhoe arrives soon. I will check those pinch points and weld the thumb on the backhoe. Look forward to future videos.
I respect you 🙏
Good video and the pigs are cute
Nice tractor. New follower here. I’d like to have a mid size tractor to supplement our large Hew Holland. Look forward to future videos.
Do you have to supplement their free-ranging with any additional food(s)?
Thanks for your question...We feed organic ration out daily for egg production with our chickens. But you don't have to with heritage breeds, Just as long you give them total free range to forage ( greens, bugs, etc...) and table scraps. This is the way most homesteaders kept their chickens back in the old days. Just don't expect lots of eggs raising them this way. Good luck and hope this was helpful. Cheers.
@@MyrtlePointHeritageFarm Thank you for answering my question!

Where did you get your Beltsville small white turkey chicks from?
We got our breeding stock from Joann at Cirrus Hill farm in Ontario. Have a great day!
@@MyrtlePointHeritageFarm Thank you so much
Thanks for the video I'm thinking of getting the 4066r with loader and cab and backhoe but your only issues is with hydros on the backhoe and welds on the bucket?
Thanks for watching! I'm sure you'll be happy with a 4066r. Nice tractors...Just be careful with the backhoe. The cylinder for the bucket is a little small for this size of tractor. Make sure you use it hard the first year as it would be covered on warranty. Have a great day!
Love the video - thank you
Glad you enjoyed the video...Thanks for watching!
WOW great video of the honey bees on the snowdrops!! Thanks for sharing.
This is genius. One of the reasons people don't get undeveloped land is the effort needed to develop it. Do they get all the food they need from the pasture? How much supplement do they need?
This is an old traditional way of clearing land. We couldn't afford real farm land so we started with raw undeveloped land. It's still a lot of work to develop raw land into a workable farm, but can be done. When we first started clearing land with pigs, we would pick-up spent brewery grains from a local brewery. We fed out unlimited amounts of this and had them in a large paddock of raw land. At the end of the season we had pigs the size of about 70-100lbs. An old timer told me that was normal growth of an old fashioned style of raising pigs on just scraps from around the homestead. We now feed out a normal amount ration getting a more marketable sized pig. The bigger they get the more productive they are clearing land. Thanks for your questions.
So we have an Irish Wolfhound pup and a Great Pyrenees pup. We got the GP for our livestock.. but was wondering if our wolfhound would be ok out with the livestock. Everything I've read said they wouldn't be and would likely chase livestock and kill them. Looks like that's not necessarily true. Do you have any advice?
I love Irish Wolfhounds! Gentle giants...But also can do a lot of damage in a hurry. We started bringing our Wolfhounds out for goat walks when they were pups. The goats slowly got used to them over time. We've lost chickens to the wolfhounds when they were pups but they have since realized that they prefer they're chicken cooked without feathers. Like everything, It all comes with time...be patient with them. All livestock guardian dogs need training. Traditional or not. Good Luck and have fun with your pups!
@@MyrtlePointHeritageFarm I was wondering about chickens, I figured it would just be a matter of training. Awesome pups🤩
Maybe a dumb question... but why not just put the fence a foot or so further away from the brush?
Thanks for your question. You could move the fence further away from the brush but they will still push the debris until they hit the fence. I leave a roadway wide enough for my tractor to fit through so I can build the next paddock in the series.
What Breed of pigs do you have? And any suggestions? Big family on a 10 acre plot in south Alabama.
We raise a variety of pigs here on the farm. Right now we have Tamworth crosses and pure bred Berkshire. If I were you I would search for any local heritage crosses closest to your location. Just remember that some breeds are leaner than others. A Berkshire for instance is a lard pig with more marbling within the meat and a Tamworth would be a little leaner meat, Both very tasty! Good luck and have fun!
@@MyrtlePointHeritageFarm thank you for the reply. I’m having a hard time finding breeders around here but I’m sure there are some.
How long do you estimate a good 1/2 acre of pasture will last a pig
That would depend on many factors. How old the pig is, What kind of pig, How much ration you feed out, Time of year, etc....If I were too guesstimate. A 1/2 ace pasture would be completely tilled within 6 months from 1 pig with a normal amount of ration given. If you want to keep it on grass then I would move it weekly into a new paddock. Hope that helps!
