- LionTree Founder and CEO Aryeh B. Bourkoff goes deep with author, historian and compadre Niall Ferguson. Niall, a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University as well as the Managing Director of the Greenmantle advisory firm, opines on the state of international and domestic affairs, as well as what makes for great leadership. Covering everything from Churchill’s greatest quotes to the unique heroism of Volodymyr Zelensky, the duo provides historical context to current events. Not to be missed.

Two critical insights:
“Life is to be found in the grey area”.
Looking backwards to look forward. Understanding the back story “enables pattern recognition...There are no laws of history that can easily be discerned”, yet another gem from A master historian”.
Ferguson is extremely informative.
propaganda. He knows more than you'll ever know
Fantastic discussion, thanks!
Really enjoyed this discussion. Purchasing The Square and The Tower shortly...
Napoleon was, of course, absolutely right about history as a public discourse.
I hope the US State Department doesnt rely on the News to alert it to possible significant events
Hear hear! Great interview especially the concluding towers and square analogy. It seems like a toleration of hate speech is the price of freedom/democracy.
Watching this entire conversation was worth it just to hear Niall say "batshit."
The point about modern leadership following the crowd is one iI've been eager to hear someone raise.
excellent
unbiased and very well spoken
Word.
Excellent interview
If people refused to watch/attend sport for “human rights violations” there’d be no more international sport. Every country is tarnished to some degree - where do we draw the line ?
.
Yeah! He’s playing the part, as it’s the route to Hollywood..
.
the official biographer of the rotten family? They gave him access even to their letters back from the Frankfurt period ...
I am a football fan and supporter of England. I am not watching the world cup in protest at corruption and human rights abuses. Eric Cantona spoke very well on the subject. I'm a fan of Niall Ferguson and learned much from watching him. I wish Scotland had made it to the world cup if only remedy the Scottish blight of defining themselves by who they hate.
So prescient on middle east war re Iran at 35 minute mark.
Missing the big picture, energy, food and money supply. Niall of all people should know this. The historic battleground we are currently in is lawfare and sovereignty not supply chains and economic sanctions.
Regarding that last comment: Let us have leaders and industrialists who take us through these dark times to a brighter, progressive future... Would that be Klaus Schwab and the WEF? "You will own nothing and be happy." With a healthy diet of protein-rich bugs instead of evil meat?
The Republican Party is divided between the MAGA folks and the RINO folks, which did impact their mid-term results. On the other hand their results in 2021showed what could happen when the GOP stopped fighting each other and supported the candidate that were nominated. The democrats have a split as well, but one side is significantly more dominant and it does not cause it as large an issue.
As for 2024, I am uncertain, but Trumps presence has galvanised the establishment and main stream media. These two centres of power are a very powerful block which may well doom Trump’s chance of winning a 2nd term in 2024. Desantis may well avoid this, but he would also lose a huge block of MAGA supporters as well, so unless Trump anoints him as his successor the GOP nomination is certain to be Trump.
Its important to understand the establishment and MSM are weaker in 2023 than 2022 or 2020. The recession, which was triggered by the response to covid and the spending which occurred in 2021, and made worst by the Russian invasion, has weakened the establishments economic power. As for the main stream media, its bias attitude towards Trump has been noticed by a large number of people, which has weakened its power as well.
I feel the real question is, can Trump prevail against a weakened establishment and MSM, or will this power block retain sufficient influence to keep Trump out of power in the same manner that they did in 2020. I really have no idea, but it will be interesting to watch in 2024.
As for a lack of energy, this may be the case but Trumps earlier energy did alienated many middle of the road Americans, so presenting himself in a more moderated and statesmen like form could convince those in the middle to support him. After all Biden showed an almost geriatric lack of energy and he did win in 2020. I doubt if Trump will remain in his basement in 2024.
This has NOTHING to do with patterns, rather is just a random observation of current events.
Glasgow. How long took him to get this posh accent ?
Stop being an oik 😂
Hm. Seems like there's a possibility that "better at pattern recognition" means "getting older and confirming one's biases in cultivated observations".
Nialk ferguson the gadfly
I will never forget about the Qatari and the russian world cup coverup by our media class and historian class
30:28 COVID vacinne affects mestruation cycle and it´s possible to see ahead a reduction in fertality. Perhaps China "will be fine" having woman not vaccinate or not using Pzifer vaccine
I like listening to Niall Ferguson. The kind of person with deep inside, a person you can both agree and disagree with. Being one hundred per cent unbiased is impossible. As well, being one hundred per cent resistant to propaganda on either side is impossible. That is true even for such historians as Niall. Such fear of Chinese and Russian aggression on one hand and being blind to the long-term invasive aggression of the USA on the other one? Blaming Russia for invading Ukraine and not seeing the genocide which has been going on in Donbas, not seeing the totalitarian fascist regime of Ukraine with a dangerous self-centred comic dictator Zelinski in its head? Not seeing the treaties which have been violated? Being blind to the evil interests of certain US corporations which want to get Russian resources? Ask the Ukrainian emigrants fleeing from the country! This is the best source of information. Ask people. Next, the case of Pfizer vaccines and vaccination mandates...were they efficient and harmless? Niall, I like you, but sometimes, think OUT OF THE BOX; that is what I, as an educator teach my students in the first place.
Way off the mark on Trump though.
Getting real tired of Niall constantly arguing MRNA vaccines works
I'm American and never watched a soccer game because it's just not popular. We played American football and basketball in high school and continue to watch those as adults. It's funny how you are indoctrinated makes a person. From politics to religion to sports watching.
The interviewer makes rather silly mini-speeches and has no questions. Ferguson responds well and intelligently, but there is nothing novel. The interviewer uses woke terminology but does not challenge Ferguson, who is known to be anti-woke. This is just a sanitised conversation to for some other motive. The top-down camera angle makes me think of Dr Evil in Austin Powers :)
I can not understand how such a clever person as Mr Ferguson is buying the propaganda about the vaccines ... Big disappointment
same here!
So smart he’s stupid. I guess since he lives in the US he surrounded by a lot of idiocy and despite anyone’s education is susceptible to brain rot😂
UA is winning in the battlefield ?
Really ?
Also, Russians have been running out of ammunition, especially missiles, for the past 10 months... how much worse is it gonna get ?
zelensky started his first taxevading foreign company in 2012.
