Good to see you back dude. Lost the foot off my gitzo, kept meaning to put some loctite on them but shouldn't really of had to for a six hundred quid or so tripod... anyway, almost over it. Welcome to the D850 side, you'll love the flip out screen once you start remembering it's there... came from the D810, it takes a while! Enjoy and get out there!
I switched from Manfrotto to Benro because the snap lock legs on the Manfrotto kept loosening and began to sag!! The Benro is a twist lock system and I love it.
thanks Paul, great to see some new content. totally agree, had never used a levelling base (tbf didn't know they existed). found an affordable (£50) chinese one on ebay and never looked back, it's the most used accessory I've ever bought
Loving the c64. Sold mine last year cause it was broken :-( been playing the megadrive recently though with my son. Does yours work still? Do you play it?
Great to see you again Paul - Great choice on the Benro gear, 3 weeks ago I purchased the following: Benro TMA48CL Mach 3 Carbon Tripod & Benro G2 Ball Head and absolutely love it! Congratulations on the D850, cracking camera! Looking forward to your next video!
Have had a Gitzo for years and don’t have the issues you've seen. Tried the lever lock system and hated it, I love the twist locks on my Gitzo, fast and easy to use. Best tripod I've ever used.
brilliant paul and well explained, it's always nice to hear opinions from other photographers like yourself but as you mentioned it's all about what suits you and how you get on with it
So... How does Lightroom run on the C64? I feel the same way as you about the twist locks. I have them on a small Benro tripod that I use for the video camera and I'm forever seeing the tripod start to sink over because I haven't locked one of the legs off tightly. My main tripod is a Manfrotto so doesn't have that problem. I may be wrong but I think all of the Benro legs are twist lock so that may not be the best choice for you. Interesting thoughts on the different cameras as well. Great video. Thanks for sharing
Great to see you back! I own two Benro tripods, heads and two monopods. I love Benro and will never own another brand. I put my tripods through hell and I always take mine apart and clean/lube them after being in sand/water. They are doing great so far. I also love my Olympus system - I shoot with the OMD EM1 MarkII. Its a great system that I switched from Canon (after 30 years) for.
Thanks Tammy, glad you are loving Benro . I have a soft spot for olympus as before moving to Nikon (with a brief stint at Sony) i always had olympus cameras.
I've had both snap and twist lock tripods currently using the twist and your vlog got me thinking that the snap lock was easier when making fine adjustments but having said that I find I mostly level the head now.
Paul, I also wanted a well designed ball head that is light, strong and has a pano feature without too much weight. I spent a lot time searching and found a wonderful product, the Acratech GP-ss Ballhead. The head is reversed for panos. It's wonderfully smooth and not as heavy as the usual brand names such as RRS, etc. Very happy with it. Sometimes it's sweet to find a product that is not one of the usual 'suspects'.
Great video Paul, and some awesome advice. I have been using a Benro tripod for a few years now and love it. It is an older aluminium version with the B0 head but still works great. Thanks for sharing!!
Interesting to see you in the "studio" from time to time Paul. You share some excellent observations that will be useful to anyone considering new gear. I try to do copious research before I buy something and most of the time I am pretty satisfied with my decisions. Looking forward to your next location vlog. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Jeff
I'm glad that you and other popular UA-camrs are beginning to talk frankly about the elephant in the room that is high megapixel cameras and image viewing distance. There are definitely advantages to having high megapixel sensors at your disposal, but print resolution really isn't much of one.
All true words in that lot Paul. That's why I like your channel. Down to earth honest and natural. My tripod is a CF made by Zommi. Cost £98 with head and does me fine but it has those twist lock legs...and the same issues. The ball head is great though. Yes I'm cheap haha.
I've had the older version of the Mountaineer, the GT2531, for nine years with no issues at all. A great tripod that has been all over the country. I just wonder if their quality has slipped. I have read where the new collars are a little harder to turn. I will say that there are a lot more options today than there was ten years ago. I also have a Feisol 3401 and love it.
I'm actually thinking about getting an Gitzo (I'm 6'3" which limits the selection), but seeing that the rubber has come off makes me a bit hesitant... Did you contact Gitzo about the rubber which came off? On a side note, 15 years ago everyone was told to get legs which was locked with the twist, as the leavers used by vendors like Manfrotto would break off in cold weather, or you would get your fingers pinched. Now suddenly everyone wants the leavers again. Maybe the best would be a woody from Berlebach ;-)
Casper Pedersen hi Casper no I didn’t contact gitzo as my experience with manufacturers only has been poor when contacting customer service . I put it down to experience and will order a new one . The bullhead was used for 6 months before it failed. Clip locks vs twist lock is a personal thing but I prefer clip lock 😃👍. I think the price that they charge means that the quality should be exceptional but it’s not my experience 😃👍
@@PaulGJohnsonphotography Hi Paul, you're right - at that price the quality should be way way better. I just asked about contacting Gitzo as I'd be interested in what excuse they would come out with :-D
Loved this and the c64! Have to admit I struggle with tripods, I invested in a carbon fibre Manfrotto which weighed a bloomin ton, sold it and now I have a £15 aluminium one off Amazon with detachable plastic plate and it is as light as a feather and tough as old boots. Its solid and doesn't jiggle in the wind on long exposures. These days I just see them as 3 points of contact that need to have good enough adjustment and lock down tight 👍
Paul, I had the same problem with the unscrew/screw legs with grit and sand build up and it was a real pain in having to take them apart and clean them as I take sea photography mostly but to combat this and it sounds and looks weird, I always take three plastic bags and attach them with elastic bands to the bases of the legs. It works and saves me a lot of time when I get home. I use this system if I`m planting the tripod in the sand.
Couldn't agree more Paul, I bought a Gitzo 3541L about 7 years ago and I have had issues with it. For example I was on a workshop in Assynt Nov 2017 with 4 other students, 3 of them had Manfrotto's and the other one was a Sirui, as far as I noticed I was the only one who had any problem with their tripod, no matter how tight I tried to tighten the twist locks, they frequently gave way and would start to slide. Given the fact that I would strip it down and clean it as recommended on a regular basis it still let me down, very disappointing considering it cost me over £600.I also lost one of the feet about 6 weeks after I bought it. In April this year I bought a Benro TAD38C tripod with flip locks from Wilkinson Cameras, it and it only cost me £199 delivered and I am very happy with it.
John Mel thanks for the comment John . Seems many are happy with there gitzo and also many are unhappy . However when paying many hundred pounds for a tripod and/ or ballhead you’d expect everyone to have positive experiences 👍
All good advice Paul, thanks for sharing. You never mentioned the commadore 64, that takes me back a long way, definitely getting old. All the best..............Peter.
Great blog as always Paul. I use a Manfrotto 055 tripod with a levelling centre column, and a 498RC2 ball head modified to use Swiss arca accessories with my D810.
Nice one Paul. Changed tripod two years ago to manfrotto 055 and a sirui head. That was a must for the weight of the d850. I've just ordered a z6 but still keeping the d850
I have been shooting with 600d for years and it's been good. All have done is got better quality stuff to build my kit up. I also had benro was cheaper ones and leg feel out after 2 years so changed to manfrotto 055. Good to see ya back all the best.
My 3 legged thing has twist locks and yes they are a pain and yes I have to be careful I don't unscrew the foot when releasing the bottom section but I love the tripod and I put up with it. I am just starting to look for a carbon fibre tripod, I'm getting old and I need lighter gear
Nice to see you again Paul, this couldn't have come at a better time as I'm contemplating the Benro B2 ball head but also thinking the FTA28CV1 tripod which comes with the v1 head
Love the video Paul. As one of the first UK owners of a Commodore PET computer I really wanted the 64, but got sidetracked by career moves and dislocation. Now it would just be useless, which sort of agrees with your comment about megapixels. Manufacturers keep pushing for more, but in reality almost few of us need it, because my 4k 55" TV screen is about as big as I'm ever going to display my images. Which is why the MFT system is really good enough for most people, although the dynamic range is a bit short of the Canon 5DSr (50 mpx🙄😏😎), I formerly owned and the Sony A7r3 I now have. But some of my best images this year were taken with the Panasonic G9. So, I'm glad you're going to vlog some more, and it is good to hear someone who can form their own opinions rather than spout the usual doublespeak about kit.
Just come across this. Like you i did my research on tripods, in fact i think i spent a good 3 or 4 months, maybe longer researching tripods. It got narrowed down to Gitzo and Feisol, i ended up going with feisol as i read about too many people with failed Gitzo tripods and hit and miss customer service from them. Feisol on the other hand had brilliant customer service, and should a part fail down the line, all parts can be bought. Plus the whole tripod is user serviceable. Being twist lock, they can be disassembled and cleaned inside. I have had my feisol 4 years now and it still works like it was new. :)
Was meant to come to Ireland this year in the van but life got in the way. I would love to. There has been a video every two weeks recently. Hoping to post more regularly now.
Thanx for sharing Your thoughts Paul :-) Tripods are important and so are ballheads. I finally got something im happy With even though it was expensive. Have a great week and take care :-)
I thoroughly agree with your points re gear and image quality etc - points any sensible photographer should know ( but somehow, sometimes...forgets). BTW, I've got the Gitzo traveller 1 and it came with a great, highly functional head, so I'll stick with it for my Fuji XT2 -mind you, I wish, too, it wasn't twist lock. Good luck to you, Paul, in all your forthcoming photography adventures and may 2019 bring you good things and great images. Peace x
I have the same tripod and have never had the problem you are having with locking the legs, maybe you haven't used it enough? If you really want the best you might try Really Right Stuff!
Paul G Johnson I have to agree with you about most ball heads. I have a Gitzo G1275 Ball Head and it has never been adequate for anything but the lightest camera and lens.
I had my first Gitzo since 2006, used it extensively, never encountered any of your problems. Had my second Gitzo (Systematic Series 3) for 3 years, used it equally extensively, not a problem in sight. I just bought my third Gitzo, a very light Traveler Series 0. ;o)). My heads are RRS BH-55 on the first tripod, an Arca Swiss Cube on the second, and the standard issue Gitzo on the third one.
Hi Paul, I would echo your thoughts on twist locks - never been a fan. I have always found the snap locks much more user friendly so my Manfrotto legs suit me. I found them much more usable when adjusting the deployed legs on uneven ground. But I bet that you'll get just as many reply's saying twist locks are better! I also think that the camera (generally) makes little difference on the whole - it's what you do with it that counts. Looking forward to your next vlog. Cheers.
Nice one Paul. Very interesting. I'm looking at a Benro GD3WH geared head to be honest rather than a ball head. Need to do a bit more research first and then see if Santa can pay me visit 😉
@@MichaelJenkinson o got that geared head last year and it's awesome. I had a ball head before and got sick of it flopping about. The geared head shows me to make precise movements in only one plane. Highly recommend it.
Hi Paul, I always love watching camera reviews, especially when they point out that you don't need the very latest and expensive camera to enjoy photography. I would LOVE to upgrade from my Nikon D90 but the wife and kids have only gone and booked us a family holiday for next year............the selfish swines! Already looking forward to the next one.....Peace.x.
We’re not supposed to talk about kit are we but I do love a good kit vlog. Know what you mean about the twist lock system. My old Induro has it. It’s a great tripod for me but the trouble I find is remembering which way to tighten and which way to unlock. I’ve had a few el collapso moments as a result.
Interesting to hear your thoughts on tripods and ballheads Paul. Love my Manfrotto tripod and got the Manfrotto ballhead as well but for last 6 months been having major issues with the locking mechanism on the ballhead. To be fair Manfrotto been trying to get the issue resolved as the spring assembly is the main problem. Will check out the benro ballhead as was contemplating 3-Legged thing but you have now given me some addtional food for thought as I think it's time to instigate a change
I have you to thank mate for owning a D810; it's (still) a far FAR better photographer than I am. Benro have been on a steep improvement curve for about two years now, I'm amazed that Gitzo still hold the high-ground. Enjoyed this one very much; keep well my friend.
Great honest review Paul. I've got a cheap K&F twist lock leg tripod and I know what you mean about knowing if they are locked or not, its a pain. Also found the locks weaken over time also (but that may just be the K&F). I'm also an old git that needs his glasses to see close up and rely on the live view to focus - it's orrible getting old init!
Hi Paul. Great to see you tackling such a subjective issue in your usual honest way. You've timed it bang on for me as I'm upgrading my tripod soon. I've got a Manfrotto 055 carbon but the clips are driving me mad - they need constant maintenance (I do a lot of seascapes). I've already ditched the Manfrotto ballhead in favour of a Benro G3 which I'm really pleased with. I'm definitely considering the Benro Mach 3 as it's half the price of a similar Gitzo. In terms of cameras, I'm a lifelong Nikon user but am really tempted by the Sony Alpha range which looks fantastic. Then again, a D850 looks perfect for me. What a great problem to have !! Great video Paul. Many thanks for sharing. P.S. the new office looks great!
Nicely done Paul ! Love the C64, been using a Gitzo with twist locks and they are a bit of a pain.Found a RRS ballhead second hand at a killer price and have been using it on my manfrotto 055.Love my D810 but like you my eyesight sucks!! Looking forward to seeing more of your vlogs, cheers....Chris
Paul, I have two Benro carbon fibre tripods, one is a big super steady beast and the other is the lighter Travel Angel. I am VERY happy with both. I have always had Monfroto heads but I have been getting used to the Benro ball head with an L bracket from SRB. I do prefer the Manfrotto geared head but the ball head is lighter on my old back! I am shooting with an old D600 and have A3+ prints on the wall. I also have a 3 foot wide pano crop taken with a D90 and I don't see a huge difference. I did my LRPS with the cropped sensor camera. Do I regret the step up? No, there are advantages with the full frame but I 100% agree with you in that the gear is secondary to the light, the natural world, the composition and being in the right place at the right time; gear is easy in comparison! Did I miss the 'why I have not been vlogging' bit? Don't worry if it is too difficult Paul. Look after yourself.
Thought that might be it Paul. I had to say goodnight and god bless to my mum for the last time in February. Remember the good times Paul and look after yourself and the rest of your family.
Great to see you getting back into the swing with another good honest video Paul. I had exactly the same bullhead problem with my Giottos a few years ago. It wasn't too bad to move, but like yours, it didn't glide. I've never had a tripod with twist locks, and I'm more than happy with the lever locks, as you said "when they're locked, they're locked!" Whats with the keyboard Paul?
Great stuff Paul I’ve used the b3 for a while but went for a cheaper levelling plate which also serves me well. The puzzling thing is that gitzo seems to be the luxury end of the manfrotto stable of gear so you think they would be top notch but you kicked that into touch
Good honest Vlog Paul. I am in the market for a new tripod. Gitzo almost got my money but I will look for other options before I take the plunge. Thanks again 👍
My Gitzo head was kind of rubbish too. I ended up switching it for a Sirui and that’s been decent at about half the cost too. I was pretty disappointed paying all that money for the Gitzo name but not really getting the value for money.
My Gitzo legs have performed well over the years but could do with a service. Twistlock are my preferred to be honest. I went for a monfrotto 3 way and then ballhead so never put a gitzo head on it... always looked awkward to me. Have been hearing and reading some very good things on the Benro mate so think you have made a good choice. Nikon...dark side stuff that is ;)
We're our own worst critics. You're as skilled as any of the photographers that I follow on UA-cam and believe me that's quite a few. Glad you invested in the best 👍. Regarding equipment I just turned 60 2 weeks ago and feel that I should upgrade from my D7200 (great camera bye the way). However in photography terms don't think it would improve said. I also have a mf3 gx7 with a number of lenses and I get good results from it plus it's so light and convenient for travel. Regarding printing, it's a bone of contention with my wife that I never print anything - used to be better with cheeper gear 😂. Sorry for the rant Paul.
Hi Eltin. It's not a rant , your thought process is spot on. It's a cliche as i have a good set up but it's not about the gear. I think i jut try to get across that getting out and shooting is the key. Don't be put off thinking you need a huge mega pixel camera.
Good to see you in the office, I did love the conservatory talks tho. I need a new tripod and Benro keep popping up. I’ve had my tripod for 2 years, ball head K&F £50 done me proud but one of the legs 🦵 falls out lol. You take good care, and look forward to seeing more. Always watching always enjoy what you do!
Jings am first!! well seen I've bugger all to do on a Saturday night while wife downstairs wi strictly. Great blog as always Paul. I went to the dark side and went fuji as I was getting old and couldn't lug the heavy D800e and three lenses. Ive got the same Gitzo and ball head and you are right its crap. The legs are ok but need annual maintenance like new shims due to salt water. But other than that its ok but ill get Benro head I the new year. Good to see you back. Jim
I got a Manfroto 055 a while ago and love it. It’s a bit heavy but really sturdy. My eyes have been bugged for years Paul you gust get used it mate 😂. All the best
You think your eyes are buggered? Mine prevented me from joining the RAAF. I've had five corneal transplants. I'm currently blind in one eye. Your eyes are buggered?
Paul Paul Paul , it's great to hear your voice again 😉, I could do with a new tripod and listening to you makes me want one even more , is that a commordor 64 on your desk 🙂
nice to hear some review stuff mate i got a manfroto befree but got to get what u can afford and its very light as i have back problems but one day i hope to get a picture i can print and hang lol
Good stuff mate. As you say doesn't matter the camera you use as you can get good images with anything I feel and my A6300 produced some lovely stuff. Got the D810 recently and for me was the ergonomics and use in cold weather. That's where the Sony was starting to be a faff, and liked the feel of the larger body especially when holding it with thick gloves on. Ohh err misses sounds bad but I think you know what I am trying to say. Love the keyboard and blast from the past and miss my speccy. Atb Mate.
I used a Manfrotto 055 tripod with a 3 way pan and tilt head and it was great but then someone suggested a Sirui T-2004X tripod and a ball head mount. Cut a long story short i bought it BUT it also has twist locks on the legs and to be honest I'm not very keen on them either but hey ho. How ever i now use both tripods but i only ever use the ball mount as it is so much easier then Flaffing about with 3 locks on my old Manfrotto pan tilt head. However there are times when i wish i still had it especially if i use a long or heavy lens such as a 100m - 400m. Great looking keyboard BTW.
I have a Manfrotto 055 with the 3047 3 way head. It clocks in at 8.5 pounds. I'm considering the acquisition of a Benro tripod and leveling head. I've tried working with a ball head but am missing the 3047 functions. Benro makes a geared head which allows dialing in one's composition on three axes and is reputedly very steady with long lenses.
Thank God I'm not the only one getting old, having to use glasses and on a budget! Love the honest opinions and review Paul but you need to cover off the most important topic...Red or Brown sauce on a bacon butty?
Ah Steve got in first. An old 64. I was an Amiga man myself. Also great point about cameras, tis not the camera just the person behind the camera. Even more so these days with mobile phones.
Nice honest take on equipment Paul, I think mega pixels are overrated! I have a print on the wall a meter long taken on my old canon 400D and it looks super (comment from visitors not only me:) I had an image from my 700D printed 2.5m long for an office, as you say to see the picture that size you have to stand back and from a few feet away you don't see any issues. The Benro kit looks good. I use a Manfrotto 055 carbon fibre and ballhead, I spent a lot of time deliberating over what to get, I can't remember what pushed me in that direction at the time but it seems to work fine after I think 4 years now. it probably doesn't get enough use!! I almost set on getting a second tripod and head as I've started messing around with timelapses and super wide nigh sky panorama's, so like the idea of leaving a camera running for the TL whilst doing my main shots. I'll take a look at Benro for the new kit. Love the Commodore! I hope that drives your Mac:) All the best bud!
I have a Manfrotto 055XProB. It's heavy, it's strong, one of the legs binds sometimes and they slip when not tightened properly. It has clip locks. I have a 3LT, Jack. It's light, it's strong, one of the legs binds sometimes, and they slip sometimes when not tightened properly. It's twist-lock. I use the 3LT head that came with the tripod. I had the same concerns levelling the camera, I bought an iShoot panning gadget. It's very cheap, looks dodgy, but has never failed. It fits into an Arca Swiss clamp, has an Arca Swiss clamp on top for a camera. Recently, I've been using a video head on the Manfrotto, MVH500AH I think. There are two versions, mine mounts to a regular tripod head. It's excellent for panning left and right, up and down, but doesn't level sideways. For that, I have a Sunwayfoto levelling base, similar to yours.
I feel your pain regarding those twist lock legs Paul. I bought a carbon fibre Benro and it’s absolutely superb, but, those twist locks are a real pain when you want adjust the legs to suit uneven ground. Especially because I’ve convinced myself it’s good practice to adjust the lower (thinner) sections closer to the ground. That was always so much easier and quicker to do on my Manfrotto tripod. Mild rant over 🙂
OK ... now i'm shocked! You burnt my world to the ground! You got some "haaaiiir's"? I thougt you only got some hat's! The worlds beautyfulst, crazyest, coolest hat's ... but hair's? I'm done !!!!!!!! ;-)
Your office looks great not dull an depressing like that Tom Heaton guy but it matches his vlogs these days 🙊 😂 liking the keybored 2 👌 I got the same benro head it's a gooden 👍
Good to hear your feedback on the Gitzo Paul & greetings from Sydney. Your video came out a couple of weeks after I committed to a Sirui Pro R-4213X carbon fiber tripod ‘Black Friday deal’ and Acratech Video Ballhead which does all the leveling of your Benro kit. I laboured long and hard over the tripod and head combo (actually, less so about the head as the Acratech heads are `next level’)... but the Sirui Pro gear seems very well made and around 60% of the price of Gitzo & RRS. Links and more details to what I am using it with at kit.com/Spike.Boydell/spike-s-photography-videography-kit if you are interested.
Nice one Paul, very different from the norm but glad to see you keeping up the tradition of silly hats :-) ....................................... Oh ................................. Sorry ............................................ Eeerrrmm .................................. Can't wait for the next one Paul ......................... heh he .......................... :-D
I’ve still got a Manfrotto 055 with the tap system, and I still use it with my pan and tilt head with my Bronica, it must be over 20 years old. The cast iron on a couple of the tap brackets has snapped and it’s taped up with insulation tape because I can’t find two of the larger sized brackets. I use it because my newer one is set up for Arca Swiss and I haven’t found a L bracket for the ERTSi. Because I always use a mobility scooter or the car I can still use the aluminium Manfrottos, the 190 and 055 (though it’s now a newer one) and get the stability the weight gives me. Benro's reputation is getting better and better and I've even heard their filters are excellent. Twelve hours after originally writing this I remember I’ve been using a Benro sidekicker gimbal head for years. I shoot my landscapes on my 5DIII, I only bought it because the tethering port died in my 5DII and in truth I still prefer the latter. I have never outgrown a camera (well maybe my Instamatic 50), I’m honestly not that good, so I only buy now when I wear kit out. If I want big images I can use my Bronica. Great video Paul, but you forgot to say where you’ve been. As long as you’re in good fettle that’s all that matters.
Pauly G, I have three Gitzos and four Gitzo heads of various heights/weights from my advertising/corporate days of shooting in studio, and some location work. They are of the era when Gitzo would take them back and repair to spec for free (35 years past). They all present the same probs you describe, but having redundancy and considering the (now no longer practiced) free fix policy, I used and endured the be-Jesus out of the heavy-as-a-russian-tank tools for a generation Cut to today's pensioner status, I went to a Really Right Stuff model 36-something 'pod and BH 55 head. All-up, its lighter than my smallest Gitzo rig, and imminently more useful and all-around better. From handling some of the Benro offerings, I think you can't go wrong there, either. From the old-eyes perspective (pun-in-there-somewhere...) I have acquired a Fuji GSF 50 S camera, and that is proving to be good medicine for bleariness. Old dogs can learn new tricks. Advanced age and cunningness --sometimes even treachery-- will win over youth and enthusiasm every time! I'm looking for a young, strong, and somewhat gullible new shooter, upon whom, to foist my old French kit --heh,heh,heh... I like the departure in content, and also look forward to your next outside sojourn.. Thank-You, Mike
Nice to see you back Paul after a rough year for you and your family, and I know its very emotional time so a happy xmas and all the best for 2019.
Ian Brown thanks buddy . Very kind . Merry Christmas
thanks for the review Paul. Look forward to your next vlog
Thanks Jimmy.
How does the c64 handle the Nikon Full frame files? My zx spectrum stutters a lot with my m43 images ;-)
It’s a tad slow 😂😂😂
Really good to have you back
Thank you Donald :)
I switched from Manfrotto to Benro because the snap lock legs on the Manfrotto kept loosening and began to sag!! The Benro is a twist lock system and I love it.
Simon Harding 😃👍
Good to see you back Paul great vlogs as always
Darren Greaves thanks Darren 😃👍
Excellent video, Paul and really enjoyed your honest opinions about the kit!
Thanks for the kind comment Linda :)
thanks Paul, great to see some new content. totally agree, had never used a levelling base (tbf didn't know they existed). found an affordable (£50) chinese one on ebay and never looked back, it's the most used accessory I've ever bought
Awesome . Thanks buddy
Good to see you back Paul. Love your shoot from the hip honesty
Thanks buddy. Im a bit like marmite, either liked or not :)
Loving the c64. Sold mine last year cause it was broken :-( been playing the megadrive recently though with my son.
Does yours work still? Do you play it?
It still works but i don't use it ;)
Really interesting chat Paul and some good points, it doesn't matter what kit you've got, it's what you do with it that matters - each to their own.
Mike Barber I agree mike . Thanks for the comment
Thanks buddy. Glad you are enjoying your Benro Kit :)
I wondered where you'd gone Paul, great to have you back. Spot on at the end and love your lickle doggy :D
Thanks buddy
Have had a Gitzo for years and don’t have the issues you've seen. Tried the lever lock system and hated it, I love the twist locks on my Gitzo, fast and easy to use. Best tripod I've ever used.
If we all liked the same thing it'd be boring Nina. Glad you love your Gitzo :)
Nice job fella👍🏻 very tempted by the d800/810. Wise words!
Cant' go wrong with the 800e at the moment. Awesome camera for great money :)
brilliant paul and well explained, it's always nice to hear opinions from other photographers like yourself but as you mentioned it's all about what suits you and how you get on with it
Think thats the key Jim. What suits one doesn't suit another. :)
Thanks Ralph :)
I'm going snap lock when i can afford it ;)
@@PaulGJohnsonphotography I'll consider one if and when my twister gives up. 😀😀
Peter Morch sounds awesome . I agree it’s nice to find a great piece of kit
Great video Paul, and some awesome advice. I have been using a Benro tripod for a few years now and love it. It is an older aluminium version with the B0 head but still works great. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks Tim. Kind as always :)
Jeff Ogden thanks Jeff :)
I'm glad that you and other popular UA-camrs are beginning to talk frankly about the elephant in the room that is high megapixel cameras and image viewing distance. There are definitely advantages to having high megapixel sensors at your disposal, but print resolution really isn't much of one.
Thanks Joe
the 3 legged thing 360 ball head has a leveling feature built in the ball head plate for doing panoramas for about £150 quite light also.
Sounds awesome John. Thanks for sharing .
All true words in that lot Paul. That's why I like your channel. Down to earth honest and natural. My tripod is a CF made by Zommi. Cost £98 with head and does me fine but it has those twist lock legs...and the same issues. The ball head is great though. Yes I'm cheap haha.
Thanks pal.
My view of the gitzo has changed, Grown to love it :)
Great to see you back vlogging Paul 🍻🍻
Thanks Mark :)
Casper Pedersen a good one I bet 👍
Some honest thoughts here Paul, appreciate you sharing mate, cheers! 👍
Thanks buddy :)
Great video nice to see you back
Thanks Ken
Loved this and the c64! Have to admit I struggle with tripods, I invested in a carbon fibre Manfrotto which weighed a bloomin ton, sold it and now I have a £15 aluminium one off Amazon with detachable plastic plate and it is as light as a feather and tough as old boots. Its solid and doesn't jiggle in the wind on long exposures. These days I just see them as 3 points of contact that need to have good enough adjustment and lock down tight 👍
Cheers buddy . Glad you liked it :) of and the C64
Excellent Paul, I was thinking of treating myself to a Gitzo for Christmas - I will have a look at the Benro stuff now!!! Well done!!
Thanks buddy
ooh i do love a gear vlog! I’ve been using Benro legs and head since this years Photography show, just great gear very pleased. Great vlog Mr Johnson!
Thanks Nicholas :)
Excellent tip , Thanks Richard :)
Ha thanks Peter The C64 is awesome
Great blog as always Paul. I use a Manfrotto 055 tripod with a levelling centre column, and a 498RC2 ball head modified to use Swiss arca accessories with my D810.
Thanks Steven :)
Nice one Paul. Changed tripod two years ago to manfrotto 055 and a sirui head. That was a must for the weight of the d850. I've just ordered a z6 but still keeping the d850
Be interested to know how you find the Z6 :)
I'll let you know mate . And we'll definitely meet up in 2919
I have been shooting with 600d for years and it's been good. All have done is got better quality stuff to build my kit up. I also had benro was cheaper ones and leg feel out after 2 years so changed to manfrotto 055. Good to see ya back all the best.
Thanks Raymond :)
I could really use something like that leveler and ball head on my CST/Berger but my old coastar couldn't handle it.
My 3 legged thing has twist locks and yes they are a pain and yes I have to be careful I don't unscrew the foot when releasing the bottom section but I love the tripod and I put up with it. I am just starting to look for a carbon fibre tripod, I'm getting old and I need lighter gear
Lol. Not experienced with the different cameras but, tripod? Three legged thing Albert is my choice. Worth a try mate.
Glad to see you back.
Thanks buddy.
Upgrading your glasses might have been a more practical & cheaper option - maybe even rose coloured ones ?
LOL Ive got new glasses. Didn't help :)
Nice to see you again Paul, this couldn't have come at a better time as I'm contemplating the Benro B2 ball head but also thinking the FTA28CV1 tripod which comes with the v1 head
Andy Whiteside thanks Andy . Expensive investment worth getting your hands on then and seeing what you think 😃👍
I’ve been more than happy with my 3 legged thing. And value/quality is off the scale.
Awesome Keith :)
Thanks Tony . Great comment.
Excellent Paul as always (just been a while)...if you ever come to Ireland I would love for you to give a talk at our club, inspiring.
Thank you Bente. You have a great week too.
Peace x
Thanks buddy. Same to you :)
I have the same tripod and have never had the problem you are having with locking the legs, maybe you haven't used it enough? If you really want the best you might try Really Right Stuff!
Its been used a lot. As i said. Maybe its just me ;)
Paul G Johnson I have to agree with you about most ball heads.
Dilliboi Rubirosa lucky you buddy 👍
Hi Paul, I would echo your thoughts on twist locks - never been a fan. I have always found the snap locks much more user friendly so my Manfrotto legs suit me. I found them much more usable when adjusting the deployed legs on uneven ground. But I bet that you'll get just as many reply's saying twist locks are better! I also think that the camera (generally) makes little difference on the whole - it's what you do with it that counts. Looking forward to your next vlog. Cheers.
Absolutely. Horse for courses :)
Is that a Commodore 64 being used as a keyboard for your iMac? Super-cool!
it's actually a real C64 :)
I spotted that and I’m very jealous
Nice one Paul. Very interesting. I'm looking at a Benro GD3WH geared head to be honest rather than a ball head. Need to do a bit more research first and then see if Santa can pay me visit 😉
@@MichaelJenkinson o got that geared head last year and it's awesome. I had a ball head before and got sick of it flopping about. The geared head shows me to make precise movements in only one plane. Highly recommend it.
@@MrCraptakular hi, yeah I've only used once but I absolutely love it. It's perfect for what I do.
Ha thank Robert. Family first :)
Thanks Paul. I make the same mistake.
I’ve got old mans eyes too. Struggle with live view on the D810 when it’s very sunny out. That’s why I like old school optical view finders
Me too Mark . Main reason I'll never go mirrorless
I love the ball head but everything is personal taste. Just steer clear of that gitzo bullhead ;)
I have you to thank mate for owning a D810; it's (still) a far FAR better photographer than I am. Benro have been on a steep improvement curve for about two years now, I'm amazed that Gitzo still hold the high-ground. Enjoyed this one very much; keep well my friend.
Thank you Ian :)
Better than the alternative ;) Thanks Jamie :)
Thanks Tim. Enjoy your camera shopping :)
Thanks Chris :)
Steve Hartley great comment buddy . Dad died this year after a long illness 👍
I've never had a tripod with twist locks, and I'm more than happy with the lever locks, as you said "when they're locked, they're locked!"
Whats with the keyboard Paul?
Thanks buddy. Its an old commodore 64 ;)
Great stuff Paul I’ve used the b3 for a while but went for a cheaper levelling plate which also serves me well. The puzzling thing is that gitzo seems to be the luxury end of the manfrotto stable of gear so you think they would be top notch but you kicked that into touch
Purely my opinion. I'm sure some people love them :)
Good honest Vlog Paul. I am in the market for a new tripod. Gitzo almost got my money but I will look for other options before I take the plunge. Thanks again 👍
Thanks buddy. Don't discount the Gitzo legs just steer clear of the ball head ;)
Thanks buddy :)
I must be honest I am not keen on these gear videos. You mad it fun but I love to see you out in the field haha
Jim
Thanks Jim. I can understand the switch to Fuji. Hope you are enjoying it :)
Lol thanks Mark
Paul Paul Paul , it's great to hear your voice again 😉, I could do with a new tripod and listening to you makes me want one even more , is that a commordor 64 on your desk 🙂
Brent Jones hi buddy . Thanks . Yep it’s a c64
nice to hear some review stuff mate i got a manfroto befree but got to get what u can afford and its very light as i have back problems but one day i hope to get a picture i can print and hang lol
Thanks Adam :)
Is the next bit, re your sabatical, coming soon? ;-)
Lol maybe :)
Atb Mate.
Cheers Ray :) Spectrum vs commodore. Golf GTI vs XR3i , mirrorless vs mirrored..... All personal taste :)
Thanks for the comment buddy. Glad you liked the keyboard ;)
I use a Benro head and tripod and love it.
They make great kit at sensible prices.
Nice office need more light Haha. Don't agree twist locks are better the snap locks had my Gitzo and RRS tripod'sfor many years still as good as new.
Its like apples and pears. :)
Nice vlog Paul, quite interesting. I must buy a new keyboard for my iMac, I see you have the latest model lol.
Great video😤
Thank you
Thank God I'm not the only one getting old, having to use glasses and on a budget! Love the honest opinions and review Paul but you need to cover off the most important topic...Red or Brown sauce on a bacon butty?
Ha thanks David. Have i not already said ;)?
The correct answer is mustard.
Correct answer is neither, just add more bacon!,
Cameras...I still use my D300s and I can get good images from the old camera...but it works for me, I find some of the equipment today is shoddy !!
I agree Martin :)
Ah Steve got in first. An old 64. I was an Amiga man myself. Also great point about cameras, tis not the camera just the person behind the camera. Even more so these days with mobile phones.
Had an Amiga after the C64 ;) Some stunning phone images around .
@@PaulGJohnsonphotography our graphics computer at the media centre at the Uni in the 80's and 90's we loved them.
Great comment thank you.
Mild rant over 🙂
Horses for courses buddy. I'm with you on twist lock but some people love them :)
OK ... now i'm shocked! You burnt my world to the ground! You got some "haaaiiir's"? I thougt you only got some hat's! The worlds beautyfulst, crazyest, coolest hat's ... but hair's? I'm done !!!!!!!! ;-)
Silvio Klemm 😂😂😂👍
Your office looks great not dull an depressing like that Tom Heaton guy but it matches his vlogs these days 🙊 😂 liking the keybored 2 👌 I got the same benro head it's a gooden 👍
Thanks Paul. The bento head is awesome :)
Is that a Commodore C64? They were great. Like the T-shirt as well
It is buddy. Thanks
Customary Land Solutions great comment buddy . Thanks for the tip
I have the same gitzo tripod/ball head setup. Agree the ball head sucks.
It's not the best is it Dashan :)
I have what looks like exactly the same leveller, branded as Andoer - £33.99 from Amazon!
Yep i had one. Didn't mention it but it locked up on me after 3 months, hence buying the Benro :)
@@PaulGJohnsonphotography I'll let you know how mine goes. I'd suspect it just needs a little re-grease from time to time.

All the best.
Flicker on the video did my head in....sorry, had to turn it off.
Don't blame you, crap video :) Ive learnt a bit since then .
Great comment. Thanks Mark. Dad died this year so was busy looking after him x
Try these people. They are adding used spares to their stocks as new ones run out. www.manfrottospares.com/055-parts.html
Paul G Johnson Sorry to hear that Paul, I hope you are as ok as can be expected.

Change that to a thank you very much indeed, they’ve got one!
Pauly G,
I have three Gitzos and four Gitzo heads of various heights/weights from my advertising/corporate days of shooting in studio, and some location work. They are of the era when Gitzo would take them back and repair to spec for free (35 years past). They all present the same probs you describe, but having redundancy and considering the (now no longer practiced) free fix policy, I used and endured the be-Jesus out of the heavy-as-a-russian-tank tools for a generation
Cut to today's pensioner status, I went to a Really Right Stuff model 36-something 'pod and BH 55 head.
Thank-You,
Mike
Thanks Mike. An interesting comment and you obviously have lots of experience with Gitzo of old :)
