    Nice switch, was amazed at how clear and readable the little screen was. I think the screen would be very convenient. Many times you're working in a switch room and want to check something trivial like how much power a device is using, or some interface statistics e.g., data throughput and you have to SSH or console into a switch. Not that it is a big deal, but you have to get the laptop, plug into the appropriate port, boot up, login, etc. Then you run a command to get some basic data and logout, and then pack up your stuff. I think the little screen would be very helpful in those quick hit what's the interface doing scenarios.

    I could be wrong, but I"m thinking that the reason they can get away with no fans is due to getting rid of 24v passive and fewer PoE ports. I don't have a 24 port here at the house, but my Gen1 16.150w has 16 ports of PoE and they support 24v, and of course it supports up to 150w of PoE. If I recall correctly, the new Gen2 only has 8 PoE, none of which support 24v passive, and only has a 32w PoE budget. Yeah, there's going to be some heat differences there. I am assuming there's something similar going on with the Gen1 24 port vs the Gen2 24 port.

    • @PirateHarbour

      gen 1 v gen 2 24 - drops from 250W to 120W and 24 poe+ to 16poe +. Thats why they can get away with fan-less.

    Nice channel Chris! Thanks for this video. I'm in discovery mode now and working on a project to optimize my network. I've contacted a few contractors to come in to terminate the cables in my home network box to RJ45 which didn't come terminated and are a big messy cluster in my closet. In addition, I plan to reroute them to a rack and PoE switch. I also have a Synology DS1520+ and MyCloud EX2 Ultra servers operating as data storage. One of the objectives of my project is to add a private VPN so that I can access these servers and network devices remotely throuch L2TP instead of using the browser apps. Another objective is to add an Access Point AC Pro to take the place of my current eero mesh. But I'm a bit confused. One installer said that I need a 'Dream Machine Pro' + 'Switch 24 PoE' and another installer said that I only need the 'Switch 24 PoE'. Yet another said that, if I want VPN, I only need the 'Switch Pro 24 PoE'. Would you or any of your channel followers be provide input on the hardware I actually need to be able to meet my objectives and also setup a VPN on UniFi? How about any network or UniFi capabilities that I add/lose with either setup? I'd appreciate any input that you can share!

    Great they took their time to fiddle with the little screen even though everything is right there in the dashboard, but what is holding back the world when it comes to 10GbE? You'd think it'd be the next natural path of evolution, clearly 1/10/100Mbit came and went, but for some reason 1GbE is here to stay like a friggin wall. I guess if switches were CPUs I'd still have my 486-DX40 from the last ice age. What gives? Seriously interested.

    • @NT-no7py
      @NT-no7py 4 роки тому +1

      Layer 2 is the second layer of the OSI model. Layer 2 is also known as ‘Data Link’. Most network switches operate at Layer 2 (some at layer 3). The data link layer provides node to node data transfer (e.g. switch to computer)

    • @tornadotj2059
      @tornadotj2059 4 роки тому +5

      Layer 2 is MAC switching only. Layer 3 is IP switching/routing. VLANs on Unifi layer 2 switches depend on the main router to do all the IP routing (USG, for example), Layer 3 can do the routing right on the switch. That's the VERY short version.

      @@tornadotj2059 "depend on the main router to do all the IP switching".. So what does that mean exactly? Well let me rephrase, when a packet comes into the switch, the switch has to ask the router what to do? Or does the router figures out the Layer 3 routing, converts it to layer 2 and loads a table into the switch? Because you can't send all the traffic *through* the router or it would be a huge bottleneck.

My 10-year-old Mikrotik Switch is calling and wants you to check out its LCD Touch screen. Once you have the equipment in a rack you won't ever use the screen, I rather just have an iPad out when checking things. Need the 24V and need all ports PoE. The Gen2 Pro though, like the 24 port which FINALLY has 10G SFP is nice, and the addition of 8 PoE ++ Is really nice too. That one i can see using for cameras, especially in some cases where i can use the PoE ++ and use the Flex Switch in remote areas.

    I find it interesting that some of the Gen2s have some PoE ports and some nonPoE, but It makes sense! If it's just going to be an access switch, not everything is going to need PoE. Say if IP phones are in the mix, PCs will probably be plugged into the phones anyway so NonPoE devices won't take up PoE ports if the NonPoE ports are all used up. Cool switch, looking forward to seeing the other ones once they are released!

    So apart from a tiny little screen which I can't see how you'll ever use it in the real world (anyone that thinks they will be very interested why) and the removal of some passive Poe (any more info on that, sounds like a very backwards step), what does the second generation actually do better than the first??? Looks potentially worse, don't get it, why bother?

    • @MARKCIE
      @MARKCIE 4 роки тому

      Fanless for a start which is important to quite a few people that have these where it does matter. Also the updated internals/components which can most likely handle a little bit more and from what I know (could be worng of course) they plan to phase out the older ones so no updates at some stage after end of life. Passive POE would be nice to have but in all honesty anything decent now should not need it. I only have one LTE Router that needs it and the $20 Instant Converter does a sterling job. Do not like it any more than the next guy as it costs to switch over but thats the way it all works. They are a business and have to keep the money coming in and we are not going to change that unfortunately. I would have liked if they added $50 to the new switches and added L3 to them but I cannot see the in-between versions so maybe there is something there to fit the gap. Oh and with the screen, agree a gimmick but more useful being there than not. I can see its uses if you do not have a phone or laptop with you when at the switch.

The price doesn't justify the LCD they should drop the LCD off the unit.

    Silly question from non-networking guy. I am looking for a solution to connect 3 floors in single house for decent speeds - ideally 500Mbps. I have two Ubiquiti AP Pro access points and two Unifi 8 port switches (4 + 4 POE). Should I find a way to route a cable to connect the switches and then hook up the APs for wireless clients or should I go the other way (if that's even possible) - connect one AP Pro to Unifi Switch (that connects to ISP) and other AP just to power and bridge them "wirelessly"? Since I have another switch left over I could then use that to connect to "wireless" AP's second LAN port to get data to wired devices around. Or is my logic way off here?

    Question!: Debating one of these (24p) vs the Pro (feat. 10Gbe SFP+ uplinks). Family home situation, 3 kids. If I should add a 10 Gbe US-16-XG later on (placed between the 24p and the router), will the 1Gbe uplink going to be a bottleneck?

    Not sure I understand the utility of the 1GB SFP Ports compared to simply using a 1GB classical Port for linking to an other switch or going back to a Security gateway? Any arguments for the SFP's. 10G SFP is clear to me from a benefit point of view?

    So this is just layer 2 right? I don't need a managed switch. All I really need is the ability to have POE to power a few raspberry pis and some WiFi access points. Will this get the job done?

    The touch screen is awesome. I would like to quickly see what hostnames are attached to a port, i didn't see that here, is that possible?
    What I didn't like is that now only some of the ports are POE. I mean sure, i don't need all ports to be POE but it was nice to be able to organize however i want. Now I'd need to organize based on POE requirement. But I only have 1 installation so it's not like it would be problem, but it is a downgrade in that regard.
    Ohh and I really like that it is passive.
    And I'm really curious how they handle layer 3 switching... and am a little confused since the GEN 1 switches were based on edge switches which are already capable of layer 3 switching i believe. I thought it was just a software limitation.
