Fort Payne, Alabama, was mentioned at the end of the song, that is where the Alabama band is from and still live there! Randy Owen sang the lead, as he does in most all of their songs. Teddy Gentry was to his left and Jeff Cook was on his right. They are all cousins! All are around 70 years old! ALL of their songs are great! Please check them out!

The banks in Louisiana issued bilingual $10 bills in the early 1800s, so they had the word "Dix" on the bills. So Dixie was slang in the US South for a ten. A songwriter from the North, Daniel Decatur Emmett, wrote a "Southern" song for a minstrel show in 1859 which included the line "I wish I was in Dixie". He never said if he was referring to Louisiana or a farm in New York or some other place altogether, but Confederate troops made it their own.

Dixie. Old South. The group, Alabama, probably the most acclaimed group of the 80's and early 90's. Numerous #1 songs, Love in the First Degree, Song of The South, to name just a couple.
1970, my Great Grandfather passed away. We got the phone call at XMas dinner. Everyone started crying, as a kid we didnt understand, but we all opened gifts from him, Pop Pop as we called him, he gave us all books that were his favorites. I still have it today...

Miss Gitana love all the festive decorations ! Alabama was the biggest country act in the 1980's & early 1990's. They had 43 #1 hits in about 10 years time, and crossed over to the pop charts a few times as well. They won a number of Grammy's & CMA's as well as People's Choice Awards...they are legends !! Gitana react to Alabama's Angels Among Us. Dixie is roughly what is known colloquially as the Confederacy but politely no one talks about that because of all the old connotations....so people just refer to the area as "Dixie"

You are correct that "Dixie" is today considered to define the "Old South" or more to the point the Confederacy .... However ...
The Mason/Dixon Line was established before the Revolution, before the United States existed
(1767) and even the academics and "experts" can't agree on where the term originated.
The Mason/Dixon story is one, ... the Louisiana Territory's $10 bill (called a DIX) is another ... there are a few more ... all predating the Civil War by some years.
Not meaning to rain on your parade ... sorry.

Alabama's "Feels so right" and "Love in the first degree" are very good and "Christmas in Dixie" radio version is good too... Seen a documentary on them one time, they got a gig up in one of the Caroline's at a bar near the beach... They was barely making ends meet, like they all had day jobs, and a couple of them, would clean tables at bar tween sets, and one of them would be in the back, washing dishes, to pick up a few extra bucks.... An they all shared an apartment, then they purposely put all their beds in the same room, and at night they would lay in bed, someone would name a song, count it off, and they would practice their harmonies and song that way...

Longtime subscriber, first time poster here! I usually watch on my TV, but had to log into my PC just to post on this one! Alabama is country royalty. The Alabama Christmas album immediately brings me back to my childhood everytime I hear it. My family used to go to my grandparent's house every year for a weekend of christmas cookie making (we made hundreds, all different kinds) and we always had music playing, including this album since it was released in 1985. Brings me right back there every single time. Both of my grandparents have been gone for a while now, and it's still an album that my entire family plays all season long. The entire album is a big warm hug! Every single song on it is a classic. Even if you don't react to it, I would highly recommend listening to the whole album. Really hard to pick favorites off it because I love them all, but Christmas in Dixie, Thistlehair the Christmas Bear, Tennesee Christmas are all up there.

Dixie was a name given to the Southern (Confederate States) during the American Civil War there was a song that was used by the Southern States that had this "Nick Name" used in it and the term has just stuck over all these years. So basically Dixie is used to mean all of the Southern Territories that made up the Confederate States
Alabama (The Band or The Group) was originally formed in the 70's, consisting of Randy Owens, his cousin, Teddy Gentry and another cousin, Jeff Cook. The group was, of course, formed in Alabama (The State) but in their early years (1970s) they went by the name "WildCountry".
In 1977 they changed their name to "Alabama" and became very popular in the 1980's. Their primary genre was "Southern Country Rock". I grew up listening to these guys. If I remember correctly they released several Christmas Albums along with the many Country Rock Albums and TV appearances, specially Christmas specials. Probably one of the most recognized Country Bands of all time. I would put them up there with "CCR" (Creedence Clearwater Revival). Their sound was the catalyst for many other country music groups that came after them.
Not quite as good as The Eagles. lol (The Eagles are my favorite band of all time)
Oh Songs... here are a few of my favs
    Angel's Among Us
    Song of the South
    Roll On
If you want to play in Texas
    Mountain Music
They have a lot of nice Christmas songs, try "Thistle Hair the Christmas Bear" :)

Music connects on a level where words and other worldly things fail. To paraphrase a great film composer, Jerry Goldsmith (I believe), people believe we write notes when, in fact, we paint emotions. In movies music highlights and is the embodiment of emotion while the film captures the physical. The first time I heard this version I had the same reaction; they are painting memories. Beautiful, emotional, amazing memories. Thanks for another great reaction.

Dixie is a nickname for the American south. due to it being below the mason-dixon line. (makes me wonder why the north isn't nicknamed mason. LOL ) my fondest Christmas was the year dad got ran over by a farm tractor and he was unable to work during his recovery and thus unable to afford Christmas that year. we didn't expect even a decent meal, much less gifts. our church unbeknownst to us, got a guy dressed as Santa to come on Christmas eve and along with him, bought us gifts and food, and it more gifts and food than I've ever seen before or since for Christmas. this was back when I still believed in Santa so it was quite magical as Santa himself came to my house to give gifts personally and comfort us due to dads injury, on top of that it was a snowy white Christmas a rarity here in central Oklahoma.

Hey Girana and Gitanos, I live in Alabama and I used to live in the town where the group is from. Fort Payne is the town, and I ran into Randy Owen, the lead singer, a couple of times. He was the kindest person you would want to meet. Much Love from Alabama

Love Alabama. My late husband would sing Dixieland Delight to me everytime it came on after we were first married. He said I was his Dixie girl. Christmas in Dixie is another of his favorites by Alabama. He was n always will be, with every breath I take, my Georgia man. Every Christmas with him was the best. Our daughters and Grandchildren loved him handing out the presents. 💞

Alabama pretty much owned country music in the US from the early ‘80’s forward for a huge number of years. Recommend Feels So Right, or Dixieland Delight, or If You’re Gonna Play in Texas....tons of others as well. 😎. Thanks for the reaction!

Alabama holds the record for the most consecutive #1 hits in country music at 18. They never had a single that didn't go #1!!!!!!!

Alabama was a staple group if you grew up in the southern US, their sound is like part of my soul pretty much. I grew up in a little town south of Tuscaloosa, AL and I can remember singing their music on the playground

Alabama was voted artist of the decade for their work in the 1980's. Someone below mentioned "Lady Down On Love" and I concur. Great tune in a catalog of great hits.

For Alabama, I’d probably check out Feels So Right, If You Wanna Play In Texas (You’ve Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band), Angels Among Us...to name a few.

Chris Rupp ( Home Free founder, but has since left in 2016 for a solo career) has a video on his channel featuring Tim, singing one of Alabama's songs called Angel's Among Us, which is beautiful. Of course Alabama's version is fantastic, too. Heck, anything by Alabama is fantastic. They were one of the most popular bands back in the 60's and 70's with even more #1 hits and more awards than even Elvis, which is really saying something. This was from a live Christmas show that Home Free filmed, just recently for their fans.

Gitana. You choose anything by Alabama and you won't be disappointed. They were such a hugely popular band for so many years. The 3 guys who were in this are all cousins. Lead singer Randy Owen, to his left our right is Teddy Gentry who played bass and did harmony vocals and to Randy's right our left is Jeff Cook who played guitar and fiddle and also sang. They now range from 68 to 72 and Randy and Teddy still do some performing. Randy still sounds great as you heard. He had a bit of a battle with prostate cancer, but seems to have beaten it. Jeff also had prostate cancer and was also diagnosed with Parkinson's. I was kind of surprised to see him here. They had more than 30 number 1 hits. You could look up a list of their #1s and do them one after the other and probably love everything you hear. Enjoy your reactions as always. Lovely Christmas jumper! You two stay safe and well. OK here is a link to an Alabama performance from 1980 called My Home's in Alabama. ua-cam.com/video/G4Ryzfvf7AE/v-deo.html

Love your reactions. I humbly suggest some Tammy Wynette (Crying steel guitar, I Believe in Fairy Tales, Till I can Make it on my Own) for starters if you ever get around to them. I see so few reactions to her and she had such an incredible voice.

From Alabama here. Fort Payne is in North East Alabama and is where the members of Alabama hail from. Dixie is a term for the Southern states of America and is a beautiful place. I feel blessed to be from here. Some of my favorites from Alabama include: I'm In A Hurry, Cheap Seats, and High Cotton. Theses are songs I grew up listening to.
