One card that I'd like to "Challenge the Stats" on for Isshin is Delina, Wild Mage. She creates a token of another creature you control, but the token is already tapped an attacking, so you don't get the attack trigger for it. It also has "Exile this creature at end of combat." So even if you get an extra combat step you won't have the token around to ever get the trigger from it. It's good for the bodies, like two extra 4/4 attacking is great, but I feel like it just doesn't really make the cut for me.
Delina is such a weird card to me. There's so many decks that at first glance she seems like she'd be good in but then when you dig a little deeper she ends up not working quite the way you want to get the best out of her.

You should do an Upping the Average for Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder. I feel like that deck can go a lot of different directions; I personally run it as a Wheel & Graveyard Steal Deck!
This is actually really similar to my Isshin deck. Anointed Procession in this deck is simply disgusting and I love it. I personally did not find Sun titan to be that great, swap it for a campaign of vengeance. It is the Calculating Litch but harder to remove and heals. Drakuseth was fine but I had trouble getting the 3 red + 4 generic. I would recommend trying tyrant familiar. It is the same cost but 2 red requirement.
I am building mine around an archon of cruelty and a helm of the host. when archon attacks the opponent sacs 2, discards 2, loses 6 life, I gain 6 life and draw 2. Bane of bala ged is .42 and with isshin exiles 4 permanents from the defenders board.
Augusta Dean of Order seems like a good include. Gives Pseudo-Vigilance to everything so you can get all the extra combats you want. Combos with Magda to generate lots of ramp(Magda does work well with an extra combat focus, but technically doesn't synergize with Isshin). If you also include Magda, you can run a few dragons like Scourge of the Throne and Velomachus Lorehold. Just some ideas. Would definitely recommend Augusta if you want extra combats. The others are basically for a slightly different build.
If you do lean harder and harder into humans here, shared animosity is hilariously funny. I almost want to add Isshin to my human deck just for this interaction
Aurelia is a card you only put in this deck if you are intending to combo it with Helm of The Host for infinite combat phases. Find one, saving a tutor for the other, or tutor both when you need them.
well theres like 5 cards people puit ion this for aurelia combo. Sword of Hearth and home, and the enchantments that give cards vigilance so they dont tap.
@@craig1287 What he said about Aurelia is correct and I've seen players mess it up. Similar effects that, on attack, let you take an extra combat step and untap your creatures do so in a way that the two untap triggers happen first andnthat means only your vigilant creatures will get three attacks. I still think Aurelia should be in the deck though and not cut like he suggested. Yes, she doesn't give you three full attacks, but still a 2nd attack in a deck that has lots of doubled attack triggers, she's insanely powerful even with the one extra attack. Also, be careful with Fireflux Squad. Isshin isn't a replacement effect, it just says to trigger the effect again, so anything that has a cost to it, like Fireflux Squad does mean you have to exile two creatures to search for two, not exile one to search for two.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel Run Augusta to get free untaps. You get to use every extra combat with her on board. Combos with Magda to ramp you out the butt.
Aurelia gets much better, when playing Sword of Hearth and Home (blink Aurelia), Reconnaisance or Gustcloak Savior. It depends more on the direction you're building the deck. I added a Equipment subtheme e.g. with Godo, so you can play Helm of the Host (Combo) as well. Helm is also good with building additional Isshins for more degenerate combat phases. Also Godo (or Stoneforge Mystic) can find some Shoes or sword of the animist.
I think a slight dungeon subtheme would be interesting. Triumphant adventure is good but nadaar is another excellent choice as well. Based on kamigawa I hope the next deck tech is anything vehicles. Whether it’s shorikai or kotori or another commander that would be great with a vehicle subtheme. I’m building Kykar with that theme.
I run Triumphant Adventurer, Nadaar, and Thorough Investigation, and with how well they perform, I've been eying Planar Ally and Barrowin. It's been amazing how much advantage you can crank out while completing 3+ dungeons.
@@timtrio9862 I've gone through Lost Mine of Phandelver the most. It may just be generic value, but it's short and Scry/Treasure/Gain&Drain/Draw are all pretty good, especially when you repeat it a couple times. I've also ventured in the other two depending on boardstate, but I'm not sure if I've completed Dungeon of the Mad Mage.
I feel like Signal Pest is an insane card in Isshin. A one drop colorless creature that has evasion and battle cry seems like it would do work at multiple points in a game. Also Blade of Selves is just hilarious; even if the myriad copies don't get their attack triggers.
I was hesitant to watch this one because I like to build my own decks from scratch, but there’s a large overlap between Isshin’s average deck list and my Queen Marchesa forced combat deck, that I’m contemplating adding him to her deck. She’s a very defensive build with effects like Revenge of Ravens, Marchesa’s Decree, Hissing Miasma, Blood Reckoning, Circle of Flames, Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs, Márton Stromgald, and Emberwilde Captain. I kept Cunning Rhetoric, Mangara, the Diplomat and include Search the Premises and Impulsive Maneuvers as well. Isshin would double all of these triggers (Márton attack trigger only). Isshin and Impulsive Maneuvers is an interesting interaction. Depending on the flip results, it either prevents or doubles combat damage. Flipping twice means that there’s an (expected value) 75% chance that the attacking creature won’t be dealing damage (and I don’t have to block it to keep The Monarch), meaning they took all of those previous effects essentially for nothing. This also means that there’s a 25% chance that the creature will do 4x the damage, which actually plays into the deck strategy, where the blockers are Brash Taunter/Spitemare/Souls of the Faultless/Boros Reckoner/Truefire Captain/Mogg Maniac/etc. I also use redirect damage spells like Reflect Damage and Mirror Strike. I can’t wait for someone to accidentally one shot themselves with their own commander. 🤣😂🤣
In my version of this deck I like to run Gleam of Battle with Thundering Raiju. Every attacking creature gets two +1/+1 counters, two others get an extra, then they all count as modified so Raiju's damage triggers become insanely strong. I also like to run Serra's Blessing and Brave the Sands with Aurelia to sidestep the Untapping issue entirely.
Honestly, I’d go more removal as much as 12 simply because edh is quite competitive. Plus, you want to establish enough mana ramp to get Argentium armor equipment or Grappling Hook to start the effectiveness of isshin murdering.
Something I found out tinkering with my version of Isshin (Winnie - go wide) is that if you remove all mana rocks, you get to build your board a lot faster and more consistenly. Having ramp in treasure tokens with attack triggers can also help speed up the damage and your board. General concept: highest MV is 5 and at least 35 - 40 creatures. Out of these only 10 finishers that boosts attacks.
Given how many tokens this deck wants to make, I'd totally throw in a divine visitation. Upgrading all our tokens to Serra Angels seems like a pretty great deal to me, even if they do come in tapped and attacking. That is still a ton of damage in the air at somebody's face.
Vengeful Ancestor's second ability will only trigger ONCE though, right? As the card dealing the damage is the goaded creature itself and not vengeful ancestor, so not a permanent we control? 🤔
the trigger comes from your vengeful ancestor, which is what isshin cares about :) So, double that trigger! And it'll double it for each attacking creature too
Don't forget Flamerush Rider. When he attacks, he creates a token copy of another creature that's also attacking. Isshin will double this ability, so now he creates two of those tokens. If you pick other creatures to copy that have also have attack triggers, those will be doubled again by Isshin, so you have four new attack triggers going off from one original Flamerush Rider attack. Seems like a no brainer to me.
The tokens that Flamerush Rider creates won't get attack triggers because they come in tapped and attacking already, bypassing the declare attack step which is what gets triggered and doubled by Isshin.
@@allisonchristie2754 hmmmm, okay, well this would still be great if you copy creatures with ETB triggers. Talking with other friends (including our LGS owner) they aren't convinced that Isshin's ability wouldn't trigger on the tokens. Yes, we agree the tokens coming in would skip the "declare attackers" phase, but the first rule clarification on Isshin states "Isshin, Two Heavens as One's ability affects only triggered abilities with conditions that are directly related to attacking, such as “whenever [this creature] attacks” or “whenever you attack with one or more creatures.” These creatures may be considered tapped, but the act of attacking is what triggers their ability, and Isshin causes that ability to trigger twice. (He doesn't copy that ability. It is the act of attacking that triggers their ability, not the declaration of intent to attack. I am a relatively newer player (only two years) so I'm still making lots of mistakes and getting advice on the rules all the time, so any help is appreciated. If you can actually point me in the direction of the rule that states the declaration step is what triggers the ability and not the actual "state" of attacking, that would be greatly appreciated. It would also help out our LGS since, lol, now one of the other workers at the store leans your way as well. Thanks for the reply. Hoping to clear this up and hoping you have a phenomenal day.
@@tattooman3603 508.4. If a creature is put onto the battlefield attacking, its controller chooses which defending player or which planeswalker a defending player controls it’s attacking as it enters the battlefield (unless the effect that put it onto the battlefield specifies what it’s attacking). Similarly, if an effect states that a creature is attacking, its controller chooses which defending player or which planeswalker a defending player controls it’s attacking it becomes attacking (unless the effect has already specified). Such creatures are “attacking” but, for the purposes of trigger events and effects, they never “attacked.” There ya go! And yeah if you copy anything with an ETB that would trigger but not the attack trigger. It would also get LTB triggers as well as long as they don't specify dying since they get exiled.
@@tattooman3603 actually this one might be a bit more relevant though in this case they're basically saying the same thing 508.3a An ability that reads “Whenever [a creature] attacks, . . .” triggers if that creature is declared as an attacker. I want to throw out a budget friendly way to get card draw. The card Search the Premises will get you two clue tokens per creature attacking you. If you're also running cards like Dockside Extortion and Smothering Tithe, add an Academy Manufactor for some added value
I recently cut Search the Premises and replaced it with Thorough Investigation. It nets me two clues each time I attack, which may be a lower ceiling than Search, but I have control over when it triggers. Plus, it's one cheaper and has additional value with venture.
I'm waiting for a couple of cards to come in before I build mine, and while I'll be taking it in a different direction, this still gave me some cool ideas to round things out a bit. On a completely related note, for those that may want a hint as to what I'm waiting for, I'll give you a totally unsubtle hint: Annihilator
@@tendo339 Not really. It's more a general idea of what I want to run. Like Etali to cheat out big Eldrazi, or Colossal Plow to help mana production, things like that.
Just be warry with Fireflux Squad attack trigger. The exiled creatures MUST have already been declared as an attacker. So creature tokens created from let's say Krenkos attack that trun cannot be exiled to Fireflux
Do you happen to have rules text for this? I am more of a novice but when I read this card I dont see it requiring creatures that were declared attacking. It says "exile another attacking creature". Now the example you gave of krenko i understand because those are not attacking but what about Hero of Bladehold? Those tokens while not declared as an attackers enter the battlefield attacking hence they are attacking creatures so they should meet the requirement. (Text has no tone, I am trying to learn not argue. Please let me know if I am incorrect.)
@@xero8515 "Whenever Fireflux Squad attacks, you may exile another target attacking creature..." The Squad's ability requires a target, which means the creature of choice has to be declared when the ability triggers, and thus is limited to creatures you already have on the battlefield at the time you declared your attack.
doesnt work so much for Isshin decks with too many tokens/small creatures, but if you prefer slanting your deck towards Big bois like Etali and the Titans, you can run Powerstone Minefield.
Just not in love with the Squadron 6 drop is real late game where you are more than likely not going to gave 3 opponents. Depending on what happens you could have a 6/6 that creates 6 2/2s or a 2/2 that creates 2 2/2s. Not consistent value for a 6 drop
I’m a little sad this video leans into the go wide strategy instead of go tall or value triggers. I’m in the middle of making Isshin and just cut all the go wide effects in favor of Lightmine Field, Powerstone Minefield, Caltrops, and some card advantage attack triggers.
About Cunning Rhetoric: I might be wrong but I don't think it works with Isshin. CR triggers when an opponent attacks, so the effect is not triggered by the creature attacking, but the opponent themselves. Again, might be wrong, but the wording is different than other similar effects
I really dont agree with the statement "Isshin's ability doesn't work nicely with Aurelia's effect" she doesn't untap your creatures on the 2nd free combat, But you are still taking an extra combat so you are getting double the isshin triggers on anything else attacking so 4x triggers on any of ur other creatures. Even in worst case if you play her with just isshin you are paying 2 more white mana for a relentless assault that comes with a 3/4 haste, vigilance, flyer body. Makes sense to me to run the card that doubles your strategy, taking her out feels like taking panharmonicon out of a yarok list
While not something to shoot for, it theoretically actually kinda works out with the new "solo attacker" effects. Use one additional combat phase to trigger solo attacker abilities and the rest of your creatures can attack on the 2nd additional combat phase. That's also assuming no vigilance.
Crown of doom doesn't work like that with Isshin, Isshin would only double the trigger if you control it and once you pass it to another player you are passing control of so Isshin would stop doubling the trigger. In other words its only double crown of doom when its hurting you but just regular crown of doom for the other players.
I think its a big mistake for isshin decks to not run both tymna and grim hireling, you will be making 6 treasures a rotation and drawing 3 cards a turn. If you add aggravated assault, you just go infinite from there in most instances. The other nice thing is, since your slots for interaction can be a little tight in isshin, hireling can do that in a pinch aswell.
Feels like the deck is too light on protection. Without Isshin, a lot of effects become substantially less exciting, so it should be a goal to keep him around on the battlefield as much as possible. General's Enforcer is definitely a step in the right direction, but something like Timely Ward or Shielded by Faith might also fit.
Not a huge fan of the mana rocks. Ramping from 2 to 4 , with a commander that's a 3 means that on turn 3 you're dropping your first threat, then you're spending the next turn dropping your commander. I'd be much more interested in dropping a 2 creature that ideally develops you (think akki ronin, robber of the rich?) that benefits from a 3 drop commander. Also, sol ring here isn't stellar; you have a deck that has aggressive color requirements, and you're realistically getting help casting ~20% of cards in the deck.
Sol ring is good in every deck, sol ring only helping cast "~20%" of the cards in the deck is just completely wrong and not even close if u looked at the decklist you would see theres at least 50% of the deck that has 2 generic or more in the cost use your brain for 2 seconds and stop making the worst take I have ever seen. And just because your commander does not have generic/colorless costs in their cost if it dies commander tax is a thing and can be payed by sol ring. playing sol ring on 1 is often a gamewinning play bc you have 4 mana turn 2, who cares if u cant cast isshin with sol ring if u are salmming a leonin warleader or any 4 drop on turn 2

Also Rhox Veteran is amazing. I picked it up for 1 penny at my LGS.
The stranger things magic equivalents have been spoiled already??
Yes they will be in New capenna set boosters, apparently fairly common in them too
I am building mine around an archon of cruelty and a helm of the host. when archon attacks the opponent sacs 2, discards 2, loses 6 life, I gain 6 life and draw 2.
Love it! Would love to see go-shintai or tameshi! I feel like tameshi is a hidden gem in the set
I would love to see what you do with Tameshi ! :D
Idol of oblivion, mentor of the meek and skull clamp are great additions for card draw since there are a lot of token generating triggers
This Video format is so cool!!!! I want more of These!!! 😂how can i suggest a Commander? 😅
I've got an episode planned for Isshin. I've already seen a few decks running cards that people think trigger again with Isshin but do not.
Were there any in this list that don't technically work with Isshin?
I came here after the meld Mishra was released. Here I come Isshin
@@coreyroberson4550 which of the 3 dungeons do you go through then?
@@timtrio9862 I've gone through Lost Mine of Phandelver the most. It may just be generic value, but it's short and Scry/Treasure/Gain&Drain/Draw are all pretty good, especially when you repeat it a couple times. I've also ventured in the other two depending on boardstate, but I'm not sure if I've completed Dungeon of the Mad Mage.
anyone played the budget list? how does it play?
I feel like Signal Pest is an insane card in Isshin. A one drop colorless creature that has evasion and battle cry seems like it would do work at multiple points in a game. Also Blade of Selves is just hilarious; even if the myriad copies don't get their attack triggers.
i was running that till i saw the price...
I also like to run Serra's Blessing and Brave the Sands with Aurelia to sidestep the Untapping issue entirely.
i would suggest, if you arent already, running Felisa, Fange of Silverquill, who has som amazing counter synergies and mentor. i dont know though
Master of Diversion does the same thing as Rhox veteran except it doesnt have battle cry, also it's one mana cheaper
Honestly, I’d go more removal as much as 12 simply because edh is quite competitive. Plus, you want to establish enough mana ramp to get Argentium armor equipment or Grappling Hook to start the effectiveness of isshin murdering.
Shorikai, Genesis Engine next please! :D
Vengeful ancestor does word, killed an opponent from his triggers
Something I found out tinkering with my version of Isshin (Winnie - go wide) is that if you remove all mana rocks, you get to build your board a lot faster and more consistenly.
Having ramp in treasure tokens with attack triggers can also help speed up the damage and your board.
General concept: highest MV is 5 and at least 35 - 40 creatures. Out of these only 10 finishers that boosts attacks.
Check out Veteran's Armament, you'll love it for Isshin.
So random but it was cool to see you in the back of Joe’s UA-cam channel. Commanderception
Thundering Raiju is one of the deadliest finishers in this deck imo. Has won me multiple games with its burn effect.
Given how many tokens this deck wants to make, I'd totally throw in a divine visitation. Upgrading all our tokens to Serra Angels seems like a pretty great deal to me, even if they do come in tapped and attacking. That is still a ton of damage in the air at somebody's face.
With this Commander I did a Samurai Tribal Deck
Vengeful Ancestor's second ability will only trigger ONCE though, right?
As the card dealing the damage is the goaded creature itself and not vengeful ancestor, so not a permanent we control? 🤔
the trigger comes from your vengeful ancestor, which is what isshin cares about :) So, double that trigger! And it'll double it for each attacking creature too
I'm a simple girl. I see a whole bunch of powerful humans and nonhuman tokens, I play Winota.
She's absolutely in my deck.
@@tattooman3603
508.4. Such creatures are “attacking” but, for the purposes of trigger events and effects, they never “attacked.”
There ya go! And yeah if you copy anything with an ETB that would trigger but not the attack trigger. It would also get LTB triggers as well as long as they don't specify dying since they get exiled.
@@tattooman3603 actually this one might be a bit more relevant though in this case they're basically saying the same thing
508.3a An ability that reads “Whenever [a creature] attacks, . . .” triggers if that creature is declared as an attacker. Similarly, “Whenever [a creature] attacks [a player or planeswalker], . . .” triggers if that creature is declared as an attacker attacking that player or planeswalker. Such abilities won’t trigger if a creature is put onto the battlefield attacking.
@@allisonchristie2754 awesome, thank you so much!!!! That seems to clear it up without a doubt. Lol, bit of a bummer for my devious plans, but I'd rather learn the rules and lose legitimately than play incorrectly and win by (unintentionally) cheating.
Have an absolutely amazing day and best of luck in all your future games.
Can you please do an upping the average for riku of two reflections I find it has the same problem as other commanders where there's so many options
A second combat is still quadrupal attack triggers. I like karlach.
Wouldn't Aurelia still be a great card to have, when your commander isn't available?
So does Mardu Ascendancy also pop twice with Isshin out on the field?
I want to throw out a budget friendly way to get card draw. The card Search the Premises will get you two clue tokens per creature attacking you. If you're also running cards like Dockside Extortion and Smothering Tithe, add an Academy Manufactor for some added value
I recently cut Search the Premises and replaced it with Thorough Investigation. It nets me two clues each time I attack, which may be a lower ceiling than Search, but I have control over when it triggers. Plus, it's one cheaper and has additional value with venture.
@@coreyroberson4550 totally valid
Second time watching and this is the first I noticed the Christina Aguilera references lol
I'm waiting for a couple of cards to come in before I build mine, and while I'll be taking it in a different direction, this still gave me some cool ideas to round things out a bit. On a completely related note, for those that may want a hint as to what I'm waiting for, I'll give you a totally unsubtle hint: Annihilator
do you have a decklist?
@@xero8515 "Whenever Fireflux Squad attacks, you may exile another target attacking creature..."
The Squad's ability requires a target, which means the creature of choice has to be declared when the ability triggers, and thus is limited to creatures you already have on the battlefield at the time you declared your attack.
@@TheSilverFox442 That makes sense, thanks for the explanation.
Gotta have that shiny samurai tribal
I am having problem with cards draw in a budget deck under 10$ a card. Any suggestion?
doesnt work so much for Isshin decks with too many tokens/small creatures, but if you prefer slanting your deck towards Big bois like Etali and the Titans, you can run Powerstone Minefield.
and lightmine field
Could you do Yawgmoth next ?:)
Was this a reupload? I feel like I watched this before
About Cunning Rhetoric: I might be wrong but I don't think it works with Isshin. CR triggers when an opponent attacks, so the effect is not triggered by the creature attacking, but the opponent themselves. Again, might be wrong, but the wording is different than other similar effects
Magic wrote an article about Isshin pointing out some cards that interact with him. Cunning Rhetoric was mentioned in that article. So yeah, it works.
@@CKarasu13 thanks!
Please up Mayael the Anima's Average
Nice. Real nice upgrades?
If you keep Aurelia you could get a serra blessing
Please do wulfgar next! 😁😁😁
That's also assuming no vigilance.
sneak a winota in there?
Too many people are sleeping on reconnaissance for this deck.
DOLMEN GATE XD
Out of budget, but it's a great card!
HECK YA!
We want go shintai of lifes origin edh
I love Crown of Doom in this deck. Let the other players play hot potato with this +4/+0-shaped target on their back. :D
Crown of doom doesn't work like that with Isshin, Isshin would only double the trigger if you control it and once you pass it to another player you are passing control of so Isshin would stop doubling the trigger. In other words its only double crown of doom when its hurting you but just regular crown of doom for the other players.
@@allisonchristie2754 D'oh! Good catch, I'd missed that. Hmm, guess I have a card slot to fill with something spicy!
Helm of the Host. Put this in your deck over Aurelia
Ironic, as it goes infinite with Aureila. lol I kept her in my deck, the one extra combat is good enough for me.
Please make a Hinata episode :D
Kroxa won me a few games so far
I really want to try Isshin as an exalted style deck, since every creature with exalted triggers twice on each attack.
combat calligrapher
I think its a big mistake for isshin decks to not run both tymna and grim hireling, you will be making 6 treasures a rotation and drawing 3 cards a turn. If you add aggravated assault, you just go infinite from there in most instances. The other nice thing is, since your slots for interaction can be a little tight in isshin, hireling can do that in a pinch aswell.
remember with Raiyou that the second and third combat you can still attack with everything.
Depends on the meta your in.
I feel like both these lists lack some consistency. maybe a bit more card draw?
i'm surprised you havent considered purphoros with the amount of token generated
Sorry but I gotta disagree with Aurelia take. In this deck its SOO easy to run demonic, or vampiric turor, enlightened tutor, steelshapers gift, etc... To grab Sword of hearth and home, Serra's blessing, or brave the sands, to make a 2 card infinite combat so easily.
We've got a combat trigger deck. Let's cut the card that gives more combat with an extra untap that is NOT useless.
BOOOOOOOO
