  • Choosing the right breed(s) for your flock can be sooo confusing! There is just so much to consider! Climate Tolerance, temperament, egg color/size/count! Just to name a few. Sarah tries to help out with another breed highlight, this time focussed on the incredibly versatile Ameraucana Chicken.
    Visit Blackwood Farms with us as we tour all the wonderful animals they care for, including a Champaign Registered Quarter Horse, Anatolian Shepherds, Guineafowl, Painted Desert Sheep, Sebastopol Geese and LOTS of different chickens! Her breeding facility has beautiful specimens of Blue, Black, Wheaton, Blue Wheaton and Splash Ameraucanas, Jubilee Orphingtons, Black Copper Marans & the ever (in)famous Easter Eggers!
    Learn about & see examples of these breeds in a great set-up, as well as meet Sharon Blackwood the lady behind it all!
    Then come back to From the Hart Farms home-front to discuss and go into specifics about what really distinguishes an Ameraucanas from an EE. Is it really just a name difference? If not, how can you tell? What are the breed standards recognized by the APA (American Poultry Association) for Ameraucana Chickens?
    Ride along to see all this with Sarah in this fun and informative video.
    A special thanks to Sharon Blackwood in Boyd TX with Blackwood Farms for inviting us into her farm and allowing me to create this video and, of course, for providing such excellent birds!
    To reach out to Sharon about any of the livestock and/or poultry featured in this video, go to Facebook and search for Blackwood Farms or find her by name. Serious inquiries only please! She's a busy woman!
    And as always, Thanks for Watchin!

    Man I gotta say I fell in love with those Jubilee Orpingtons! What I beautiful bird! I dunno, speckles do something to me. Love the speckled Sussex too! lol
    I've got a couple beautiful Black Copper Marans roosters that revealed their roosterness when they were between one and two weeks old when they suddenly started growing massive Fred Flintstone feet. Matured now they have very beefy legs and feet, very stocky birds.
    I had planned to get Lavender Ameraucana's going but I only wound up with one girl. Hopes dashed for the moment I picked up six Buff Orpingtons with no intentions of breeding them. Guess what, one was a rooster. lol Those birds are so affectionate including Goldie the rooster. Goldie because he quickly started putting out hackles and saddle feathers that sparkle exactly like polished gold. Now his tail is going slightly darker brown. Can't wait to see how he finishes out, Think he's gonna be a super model. lol
    Anyhow, still planning to get at least six more Lavender Ameraucana's in spring. Drop a couple in with Silver (my current Ameraucana) and the Orpingtons and the rest in with my Copper Marans. Got hatching eggs on the way now for Black, Blue and Splash Copper Marans. I''m a big fan of the Marans. Great birds all around. Like to build on those further.

    Great video. Sharon's farm is beautiful and she has lovely, healthy animals. And the location was really pretty. The little chick that kept poking his head out is precious!!! I enjoyed this a lot.

    I don't want you to think I'm mean now, but the Marans Rooster from Blackwood farm is not a pure breed Marans. The comb is the first sign. The eggs those hens seem to lay are actually not much darker than supermarket eggs. They should be much more darker. So all in all, I think the Marans from that farm are not good if you want to get really good dark olive eggs. There is a egg color chart for Marans eggs, it goes from 4 to 9. The eggs from Blackwood farm are a 4. If you want to breed good olive eggers, you should look for Marans that lay from 7 to 9.

    Americana and Ameracauna are just easter eggers

    • @fromthehartfarms
      @fromthehartfarms  5 місяців тому +1

      There is a registered breed called Ameraucana. Please watch my video follow-up Titled An Interview With an Expert, where I visit and interview Mr. Paul Smith who helped establish the A.P.A. qualifications for this new addition to the recognized breed list. There is a lit of confusion on this subject, and many EEs are labeled as a misspelled version of the recognized breed. This is exactly why I took the time to create TWO videos on these AMAZING birds. Thank you for checking out my channel!

    • @garyhempel6316
      @garyhempel6316 5 місяців тому +2

      @@fromthehartfarms yes I raise Ameraucana. But even mine technically i couldn't call that since i breed red brown and black one together . To me calling easter eggers Americana or Ameracauna is just deceptive to make people think they have something other than an easter egger.

    • @fromthehartfarms
      @fromthehartfarms  5 місяців тому +1

      @@garyhempel6316 I agree. One of the things Mr. Smith pointed out was that if you breed two different color (official a.p.a. qualified) Ameraucana together like say a wheaton & a blue together, the resulting offspring would no longer conform to standard & would therefore be considered Easter Eggers. I don't think people are intentionally being deceptive, just don't know. A lot of this is still new to me too!
