  • Come Along with me as we EXPLORE OLD HOLLYWOOD History in the desert in Phoenix AZ! We find the HISTORIC buildings used in the openining scene of the classic Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho, right before we are introduced to Sam and Marion. Remarkably the buildings used are still there and they have their own interesting history I'll share along the way!

    I live in Phoenix and this video inspired me to go into downtown last night at 2 am in the morning and find these buildings. I found every one of them and was amazed! So cool that after 64 years they are still standing. Thank you for the inspiration and I will be going out again in the daytime when the weather gets cooler, maybe October or thereabouts. Cheers from Arizona!

    Inside the Hilton Garden Inn there’s a rooftop bar called Floor 13, every cocktail is named after a Hitchcock movie or Hitchcock Presents episode! There’s also a bunch of photos of him, frames from the movie, and a neon Bates Motel sign!

Great detective work and your historical tie in is amazing,Thank You!, I remember watching Psyco as a small child , very scary indeed,The Birds is my favorite Hitchcock film though, Ive been to Bodega Bay many times and toured film locations there. I also had the pleasure of meetting Tippi Henderen once too , She runs a big cat Lion/Tiger sanctuarry outside Los Angeles called Shamballa., met her there, Thank you again, cheers! And then there's the Psycho House which was on the Universal Studios backlot, where it remains to this day. You can see it from the tram on the Universal Studios tour but during the annual October Halloween Horror nights they let you get off the trams and actually walk up to the house. Believe it or not by the 1970s the significance of that house was so forgotten that I remember seeing an episode of Alias Smith And Jones which supposedly took place out on the western plains and the two characters go riding up to a house and it's the Psycho House!

    Back in 2004 I did the research on where the opening pan shots of the Phoenix cityscape were shot. It was on top of the Phoenix Title and Trust building, now the Orpheum Lofts (a beautiful art deco building). I was able to gain access to the roof deck and re-shoot the sequence. Several taller buildings now block the view, so it is impossible to recapture the scene as it appears in the film.
    The building that is under construction in the first few frames (filmed in Dec. 1959) was being torn down when we tried to recreate the opening sequence in 2004. Ironic.
    The Adams Hotel at Adams and Central has been there since before the 1920s. The first one burned in one of the city's hottest-ever building fires. The second one was of poured concrete, and that's the building that has the restaurant and coffee shop in it (very common in the day). After the filming of Psycho, the Adams was demolished and rebuilt, and it continued into the new Millennium until Renaissance acquired it.
    The antenna on the Westward Ho was the first TV broadcast antenna in Arizona, but it was installed after WWII (1950 or 51 as I recall). The RKO building in LA put their antenna up in the 1930's. The unusual shape and placement of the Westward Ho antenna is due to how it is anchored to the building. It gets its support from having its 3 legs attached to 3 of the 4 corners of the tower.

    I love the city scenes and the constant tension Hitch develops.
    Even that tryst scene, it’s hot and they’re nervous. Then she goes to the car lot, great memorable scenes.

    Great video! I do have one minor correction. The shot at the beginning of psycho is not a helicopter shot. They attempted to do a helicopter shot but it ended up being too bumpy for Hitchcock's taste. Instead the camera was mounted on a tripod on the roof of the Orpheum Lofts building at Adams and 1st street. They simply panned across the Skyline.

Upon watching the pan shot this morning, if you pause the frame right when you first see the city, to the left you can see the roof and concrete of the lofts on the lower left hand corner for a split second.

    Great video! Did you go to the Valley Bar across from the San Carlos Hotel? Entrance is in an alley and you take the stairs down to a bar and music venue. There’s no connection to the movie but the bar design is done in a way to tell the story of the Winnie Ruth Judd murder, one of AZs most historic murder cases. It’s like something out of a Hitchcock movie so you’d probably enjoy it. Plus being in the basement is a good way to beat the heat! 🥵Hope you had fun in Phoenix!

  • @litemakr
    @litemakr 19 днів тому

    Nice job! One thing however, none of the opening shots were done with a helicopter, they are all static cameras at various heights panning and zooming. Hitchcock originally wanted a single long helicopter shot which started with Phoenix in the distance and flew towards it while the opening titles ran, eventually ending up at the hotel and going into the window. This proved to be too technically difficult and expensive (Psycho was shot on a small budget using the crew from Hitchcock's television show to save money). The 1998 remake revived the concept.

    I believe you're mistaken about the window used for Marian and Sam's room. If you notice, there are 7 columns of double windows on the hotel location. The center column, the 4th from the right (and the left) has a horizontal cornice at the very top and a horizontal lighter sandstone row separating the top floor windows from the second row down. Both that cornice and the sandstone strip bump out slightly around the center column of double windows. So if the window you chose was the actual one shot by the second unit - second row from the top, third pair from the right - then as the shot zooms in we should see that bump out of the sandstone strip just to the left of the hero window. But we don’t see that bump out... the horizontal sandstone strip is flat just to the left of the hero window. So, I believe this tells us that the hero window is one column farther to the right, or the second row down from the top (as you guessed) but only the second column from the right, not the third. "Close, but no cigar" as they say. Thanks for the video... fun.
