That was an excellent presentation. I never imagined that watching a grown man "play with toys in a sandbox" could be so educational and entertaining!
Think it was entertaining for you??? Ha ha! I never imagined it would be my job as a grown man to play with toys in a sandbox.
@@amillison you are killing it sir, in the best way
Those videos should be medically prescribed as a remedy to eco anxiety 😉😊
@@amillison lolololol.
I agree with all the above comments and applaud your playing in the sand!
And what an awesome way to educate, through fun, people really take the information in at a new level.
It's fun
But this type of content is serious and extremely important for of us all
After flooding in Calgary, Alberta in 2005, some ponds were dug, three in a row in more than one are of Fish Creek Provincial Park. A beaver came along and put a dam to make a fourth pond at the end of the series! The ponds really helped to slow water during the next flood in 2013.
Thanks for this comment. One of the things I've been thinking about is water mitigation due to climate change. Glad someone shared real life experience with ponds
Great use of the sandbox. Such a good visualization tool for water! It’s like a Star Wars holograph for permaculture land design.
Funny enough: i just bought my own copy of "soil plant and atmosphere" like two hours ago! It is a comprehensive book about hydrology and the ways to create water reservoirs. Gotta love the coincidence!
Synchronicity
Your phone probably heard you talk about it and recommend you this video. Google be crazy like that.
@@brownshit1 google uploaded the video because i said stuff? Nah man, i subscribed to the channel before that
Such a great use of AR tech. Also a great sell for your OSU courses. Thanks Andrew!
Very good. I was designing water management systems on properties 20yrs ago that still work today. I always told clients that water is the first thing you do on a property and all other things follow.
You have a natural way to take a presentation to the next level. Thank you for sharing.
EXCELLENT! This is the best way to help people learn what you're talking about - in three-dimensions. Suggestion - I'd like to see you use these same models to handle questions from comments INTERACTIVELY.
I'm a visual learner, and this was amazing to watch! Now I'm off to search if you've done any permaculture explained for small scale urban permaculture!

Hey! What have you found out there and what’s your journey looking like?
Preserving ever drop of water reminds me conceptually every time my mom would yell at me to turn off the water faucet when I’m not directly using it- preserving ever drop of water
What a great video, thank you 🙂
It's a great visual for people like our folks/relatives who don't understand why we moved from the city to be "out in the middle of no-where" . . lol
Brilliant Andrew 👏👏 Hi from India 🙏
I am going to utilize every element of permaculture to my farm. Thank you Andrew!
Sounds great! Best of luck to you! :) Thanks for watching.
Most understandable layout I have seen. Thanks. Our property is on a slope, so very helpful.
Kids would love this sand table. What a teaching tool for Geography.
I loved the presentation, thank you for taking the time to make this and your other videos too. Congratulations Oregon State University for taking this important work on.
QUESTION: Are you in contact with international agencies, such as UNESCO? You should be getting international support. Also, have you done any TED TALKS, yet? You would be incredibly perfect for TED talks.
Very reason we should install sand box in children’s parks, and let them play after rain observing water flow !!! This presentation just reminded me my childhood 🎉 😂 so educational! Thank you
This has got to be one of the best educational videos on permaculture that I have seen. Thanks for sharing! I value finding ways to lower maintenance requirements on any project and this knowledge will definitely assist with that.
Great Job!! Clear, concise, to the point, visual, good soundtrack and special affects :) A good visual imprint that summarizes years of experience and research is better then candy coated candy. Cheers
Thank you, Andrew. You are 100% on target and have provided a wonderful illustrative presentation to explain this topic. I have been a long time environmental professional putting the pieces together for 30 years and you elegantly capture the hydro geologic component of in just over 6 min is a wonderful share to both lay person and professional alike. I have semi retired to 4 acres of green Kentucky hillside property. Blank slate with a residence. I have just been walking and watching this first year and you have captured the fundamental aspects of my very plan.
Watch natural flows, use elevation with water capture. I am an aquaculturist and intend not on just swales, but actual deeper lined terraced raceway ponds (I have sandy clay soils under KY31 pasture) for the summer month grow out in this varied temperate zone. No coincidences.
I haven't seen your other presentations yet but shall. Not a big YTube subscriber, but you have my subscription now. Who knows maybe I'll roll camera as I begin this "co-generative" multi crop homestead.
Well done.

Would love to see something dedicated to sub 5acre plats! If you wanted to focus on 2acres with lake access I wouldn’t complain 🤷🏻♀️ hahaha
Andrew, you are my hero. I am working on making my flood land acherige into a terraced garden like yours

You are having too much fun with this sandbox Andrew. Thanks for sharing how to design from pattern to detail!
I just love all these crisp presentations, so easy for kids to understand too
Greetings from the LooseNatural farm in Andalusia
Brilliant I wish farmers did this on a large scale here in Australia
Andrew thank you, wunderful, easy to understand
you are the first designer , I see, who work on a realitic landscape model , when I study architecture and landscape planning 32 years ago, i do the same ,but nobody of my collegs do it, I was lonel ywith this method, now i am encouraged to do it again, i my valley in switzerland, be blessed for your work, joseph
Oh man, great explanation, thank you Andrew !
Awesome demo of permaculture principles.....reminds us of why we face scarcity of water and rainful
Thank you for this, I love the message in the song too wow wasn't expecting that 🙂❤
state of the art presentation!
I like this video the most among all the videos I have watched on permaculture..thanks for uploading.🙏🏼💐
In Alameda County, CA, the ranchers and would be farmers in the country living with some hilly areas, the property owners have been prohibited from building ponds. Why is there such a division between Alameda County, CA and Permaculture? Regional Park Districts and Agencies that buy up water rights have so much political power, they demand other property owners with the own water rights not block run off coming across their lands. Who has legal priority?
Really great and concise intro to the idea. Loved it.
So glad I came across your channel
You are a wonderful teacher!
Very well explained with great technology .
This presentation is stunning!
Thank you for another really informative presentation. 👏
hey what's the permaculture song in this video? love your vids, man! thanks for all the info! ✌️

@@amillison awesome. thank you!
Excellent, so informative and scientific
The best presentation in the world
I am gonna try this to get water in my yard .
Great presentation. Content wonderful. Thank you.
What a channel!!! Congratz!!! Keep doing this awesome work!
Thank you! Will do!
Inspiring. I am learning a lot from you and others on permaculture. I have land I need to utilise, but not knowing how to collect rain water has been my biggest challenge. Now I know what to do and I intend to start small, by digging some trenches to hold run off, along the water flow areas, then allow it to seep into the ground. Next year(rainy season) I want to improve the water retention and replenish underground water hopefully. In the 3rd year, rains permitting, I hope I will see higher water output from the borehole, which will allow me to grow more fodder for the farm animals.
Let us know how you do, and if you can… film before doing anything and also progress as you go along! Slow steady shots are the best.
@@louisegogel7973 Thanks. That's the plan.

I don't know how I got here, but watched the whole thing
Love these!
Paul Izak music on the vid, that’s great! 🎉 great vid
An amazing presentation. Thank you for sharing ur knowledge
Thanks for watching!

Wow ! What an informative video!
We have had record rainfall year here in SE Louisiana... Its been rough! 30 minutes away from us they got 11 inches of rain in one day which is a sixth of our annual rainfall... I can't wrap my head around how to plan for these events on pretty flat land lol.. Need to dig an entire lake and use the dirt to build up up up I suppose lol
Awesome stuff! I want to live there!
What a great video! 🙏
Do you have any references that talk specifically about how to get from one road to another? All the videos I've seen talk about making roads on contour to direct water, but none have talked about how to seemingly teleport from one elevation to another.
Yes! Up and down roads should be dead-on the ridges. I recommend watching this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLNdMkGYdEqOAacDMD_7fZhGwc_NUdOw3n.html
On #4 I cover road positioning for the whole landscape.
This channel is amazing!
Glad you think so!
This video was so interesting that I am hoping you make another one slightly different. More examples.
more coming :-)
This is amazing !!! MOOOOREE
I really interested about permaculture that you explaned, thought i didn't understand yet about the system...
thanks!
😍 I’ll live there! I want to learn
Looking at this illustration it appears as if propulsion of whatever we in that goes resembles the flow of water down hill! Hahah I will try to implement this later in my own landscaping endeavors
Not my field but i'd have to be at least a little worried if the area was prone to flash floods that my road would be washed away and cut me off.
Awesome video!! I think the only thing we may not have taken into account is the path of the sun :) and how that impact where we plant
Thanks
Brilliant..
your videos are inspiring
awesome !
good concept and nice presentation
watch this high, trust me, it helps permaculture learning
Water is life, water is the foundation of civilization
G'day Andrew, I loved your explanation! Only thing that worries me, as humans want flushing toilets & you end up with a polluted septic system near your clean water source! Councils and beauracrats won't allow compost toilets in some areas! Just a thought 👍🇦🇺
Danke!
Bitte schön!! :) And thank you to you as well! Much appreciated.

Idea: Strained rain collection from the roof goes to a holding pond without a liner to let water perculate into the ground. A solar powered well pumps water into the pond near by or even in the center of the pond. The earth serves as a storage buffer to also clean the water up as it is pumped into the holding pond. A level controller keeps the pond level consistent. The pumped water goes through water falls to aireate the pond and supply water for a vegetable and landscaping garden. We get 35 inches (about 1 meter) of rain per year. The ground goes deep with mixed clay and sand, moderate perculation. With this set up, a 50 (15 meters) foot deep well will tap into the water table here. The holding pond will keep the immediate water table higher than normal locally. Our home water well is 100 (30 meters) feet deep but water is found at less depths. We could supplement this pond with house water, even select grey water (washing machine only, select detergent). This seems to be the least expensive useful rain and pond combination for aesthetics and irrigation. Overflow goes to a much larger pond naturally where there is a house water well 30 meters away, proven potable water. What say you?

Thank you! I would leave out the animals. Lets create a world without animal use and animal exploitation! 🌱🌳🌄💖💛💚
Amazing presentation, Thank you so much for your time.
Is there any website to register to get courses with you about permaculture ?
Permaculturedesign.oregonstate.edu
I do have a question with our property which has a gentle slope with solid clay so water sits. What are best ways to control water in this situation as there is no access as it’s slowly becoming a swamp. I’m thinking swales to direct water to try and force some drier pockets .
I am hoping to make a video about the chinampas of Mexico soon, but essentially you create low areas that stay wet, while building up small islands and peninsulas that remain drier. So you hyper-saturate some areas while drying others in low swampy locations.
@@amillison Looking forward to that! Such a great topic for growing rice in arsenic free soils or creating super nutrient dense areas for biomass, or even creating springs or water sources that can be purified by plants and then filtered with char on site. I think it could be a great video as well with this technology
its a truly inspiring presentation.. i just want to ask sir if those mining areas can be converted into permaculture?
I wish my sandbox could do that!
You mention the different type of plants you'd want to plant at certain areas, do you have list of trees/bushes that would go best with each area?
Amazing presentation. Is there any worry that the high value plants absorb the inevitable truck/car contamination (e.g. exhaust, oil, rubber, car fluids) since they are placed by the road?
Trees are good filters, and don't bring pollutants through their entire vascular system into fruits and nuts. But it's true, that any time you have automobiles in the equation, then there is pollution. So the same pattern can apply with animal driven wagons. I just included the cars because in the US, nearly every farm uses motorized vehicles. But I have been many places in the world where transportation on farms is primarily animal driven.
Nice that you use paul izaks song...
Hello Andrew
I love all your videos specially the amazing animations
I found this video all great until you said where to put house basically you put the house on the top of hill!
Do you think a better place would be below the top pound from fire, temperature and gravity point of view ie basic permaculture practices.
Also having house in the mid way to property slope not only gives us all the flexibility as mentioned earlier but also provides us with privacy, easy access to property from the centre of property (location of house from).
Your thoughts please.
Thanks
What methods are used to hold the water? Bentonite, liner? I’m guessing you would want the bodies of water to leak to some degree, correct? Great presentation by the way.
I am interested in your thoughts how you manage or avoid basic water erosion and mud/landslides when you install these swales and dams. These are obvious occurrences in monsoon or high rain zones and usually on slopes or gradients where it is steep also the type of foliage or vegetation that is anchoring the soil in place; but generally speaking you are holding water in these zones so would these dykes/walls not fail in a way that being mostly just soil they would become saturated overtime and when a large deluge of water say and an extended rain period would this not cause these damns to erode in a way that is called landslide or slipping. how do you take in consideration for these water events.
A video about design solutions around a boggy area, please.
awesome
Great presentation, can someone tell me how to project colors based in height gradient? Thanks in Advance!
Which species to plant on the dry upland? What utility do they provide?
