    Brilliant musical score. It adds so much to the film that Scott Walker should have gotten his name in the credits above the director's as Hitchcock did with Herrmann for his Psycho score. Engrossing film.

    I cannot belive some people were surprised by the film's ending. The film is called "The Childhood of a Leader", that already tells you he will become "a leader" when he grows up and it's a film about a disturbed kid growing up. Did you think he was growing into a scout leader or a leader of a rock band? Seriously, people! :-)

    • @Finnatese
      @Finnatese 5 років тому +16

      cultmama cultmama surely no one was surprised that he turned into a dictator, I think the surprise ending was that his real father was obviously the man his mother was having an affair with (told purely through the fact they used the same actor as the father and the grown son in then last scene)

    • @andreimileti
      @andreimileti 4 роки тому +4

      @@Finnatese There were lots of hints that they at least had some illicit relationship (they act really weirdly around each other), but this was still a surprise. (Also, the name of this "chapter" of the film says he's a bastard, using a double entendre.) Why exactly this was such a shocking ending is kind of confusing... like, okay, so his mom had a child out of wedlock and he became a dictator? So what? It's not a particularly interesting nature vs. nurture argument. His presumed dad (and mom) was a dick, and we don't know enough about his biological dad to know if he was also shitty (which is likely because he's sleeping around with married women and his offspring became Hitler lol). I loved the movie but found the decision to cast Pattinson as the grown-up dictator to be weird and kind of weak.

    Interestingly, the final scene involving the spinning was not actually planned, but as the "Dictator" exited the car the camera-man actually slipped on a banana-peel. The director decided to keep it in.

    Filming this scene probably felt quite normal for Robert Pattinson - it's basicially the same as when he's greeted by his female fan base at festivals, etc - same wild eyes, same cult of personality. I was surprised how much I got into this movie - very compelling and disturbing, and, dare I say, thought provoking. Definitely want to watch it again.

    • @bottle1lack743
      @bottle1lack743 6 років тому +6

      92ninersboy Really? You would watch it again? I prefer to take a shit then stand up and sit on a uncomfortable too small for me chair over the toilet and watch my big fat feces floating in the water for 2 hours than re-watch this movie again.
      The cinematography is well done I give them that and they nail the 1920's atmosphere, it's dark and evil I also admire that soundtrack also good but there is no story to back up all this visual and sound build up! the dialogues were very shallow, and it seems that some shots were purposely made longer than they need to be only to make the movie itself longer. It just looks too pretentious and it's BORING AF, if it only had better storyline, purposeful dialogue, more action and character development it would be a much better movie.

      In my view the girl is highlighted to show the long-lasting impact of the new leadership on the younger generation. The girl has no real notion of what's transpiring or what the consequences might be, but at her age she is likely going to impacted throughout much of her life by this movement. The spinny/weird camera angles are meant to highlight the sense of trauma and bewilderment some might feel at the rise of a fascist / dangerous leader.

    Good movie that highlights how the failures of the Treaty of Versailles lead to the following war. My only gripe is that it doesn't paint an accurate image of real childhoods of future fascist leaders. Mussolini was the son of a socialist agitator and a school teacher. Hitler came from a dysfunctional middle class family. Either way, the soundtrack is outstanding and the dizzying stairwell sequence before this scene sticks in my head for some reason.

    • @ken__2526
      @ken__2526 Рік тому +2

      What even is an "accurate" or correct portrait of a childhood of a future fascist leader? They're all pretty different. For example, Japan's fascist rulers during WW2 were from military households and nobility while Ante Pavelić was a working class kid who happened to stumble upon nationalist teachings. Mussolini's childhood, in fact, probably had less to do with his eventual fascist attitude. He grew up with socialists, yes, and he became socialist himself. But, his disagreements with Italy's pacifist socialists during WW1, which led to his ousting from the socialist movement, led Mussolini into radically changing his beliefs: he denounced classic Marxism in favour of nationalism, which put him on the track to fascism.

      Prescott looked like Pattinson because Pattinson was his real father. You can see the sexual tension between Pattinsons' character and Prescott's mother. Also, her mother didn't want to have sex with her husband but Pattinson was with her in the house when her husband wasn't.

    • @aglucas

      @@mauricioruiz522 I disagree. If that's the case then we should also think the teacher and the Dad were sleeping around. Mom didnt' want to have sex again cause having Prescott almost killed her and she didnt want to chance creating another monster. IMO. Pattinson could be the father too tho. Lot's of fun angles to think about. Great movie.
