Just the way I learned to do it fifty years ago and have done it since. No matter how many gadgets you have some times you just need to know how to roll a ball of yarn.
I used to always start with the yarn in a figure 8 with my thumb, wrap and fold over itself, then wind around my finger tips as the ball gets bigger. Now I prefer using a toilet paper roll! Lol! Thanks!
After all these years of working with yarn, I feel silly not thinking about just putting your finger there to keep the tension looser. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️. As I’ve always said, “when you crochet, there’s always something new to learn”. Thank you for putting out this video!!!💜🫂💜
1:22 fussy cutting- Granny bee this is genius! It's something I've never thought of before with yarn like this! Now if I see a multicolored yarn I like I won't turn away from buying it because I'll remember this!
Minus the finger suggestion, this is exactly how I roll my yarn, and I always thought I was doing it wrong. Thank you for showing me that I'm not crazy! LOL!
ASKING FOR PRAYERS FOR my hubby, Brian. He has been going thru Chemo and Radiation for Cancer. His new scans show 7+ new spots on his liver. Prayers are greatly appreciated.✝️🙏❤️🕊️💜🌹
I roll mine over 2 fingers, but that's bcuz that's the way I learned it. I have a ball winder now in order to make yarn cake leftovers. Been crocheting for decades, but thought I'd treat myself to one. Plus I like gadgets 😄
The extra finger width is a great tip! Many people want to buy or use gadgets for everything, but they forget the best tools are right there at the end of their arms! That said, I need to know the best way to add more twist to yarn that has gotten past the Quality Assurance/Quality Control people at the yarn factories, i.e. irregularly or insufficiently twisted yarn that wants to be "splitty". I have a few methods, but boy it can be a hassle trying to do yards and yards of it at one time or having to start and stop to twist it some more for the next few yards. A couple of the ways are kinda fun. All of the ways to give me a break to get my arms to do some other function except for the same repeated motions chugging away at my stitches. It's actually a pretty good break, I really should do a video except that... I get stage fright.
I do not have any hints for the twisty yarn problem but i think it's funny that you said "I should make a video for that" because that's how my youtube Page got started. I would try to explain things to people in words and it's hard when a video Works so much better and granny Bee crochets was born.
You can teach an old dog new tricks:) I always hand ball my yarn (have tried every other way possible and still think this is best), but never used this trick. I am sure I have overwound my previous yarn balls, Thank you so much for this valuable hack😊 New subscriber!
Patterns I can do. The main sweater is called "Flight of Fancy" by lionbrand.com. the second one has a free versión on youtube, I'll attach the link and she sells the adult version on Etsy that info is on her video information. ua-cam.com/video/dqESpU5Nxb4/v-deo.htmlsi=_sKEQRUyYEJopa5D
@@GrannyBeeCrochets It is basically an oversized wooden spoon handle. A lot of Europeans use their wooden spoon handles. The larger the diameter of your 'stick' the loser your yarn ball will be. You could use a jumbo knitting needle, too. I would get hubby to use a sander to reduce the point of the needle to just a 'nub.' There are numerous YT vids that illustrate how to use a nostepinde. Many hand spinners and super thin thread lace knitters, won't use a hand crank winder on their delicate yarns/threads; they use a nostepinde. The nostepinde makes a center pull ball, that once it's off the 'stick' you can mush the ball to reduce the size of the center hole, and that will loosen up the yarn.

I have a Ball winder now too but i crochet everywhere and i don't always take it with me so i thought i need to share this. Thank you for watching

@@GrannyBeeCrochets , thank you for sharing your lovely work.
Thank you for sharing this pattern. You have another cardigan in the video. Could you tell us what that one is, too?

It's always nice to know we're not crazy
Thanks for the tip about adding the finger in the wind! I had been doing that in the first couple of turns but now I will do it every turn!
i will warn you it does get harder as the ball gets bigger but by then you've already given it enough looseness.
What a wonderful trick to learn at any age. Thank you.
Uh oh, I’ve been doing it wrong 😧 Great to know, thank you!!❤
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you Granny B for showing us how to wind up yarn 🧶 and to separate colors found in cakes.
You are welcome

I finally bought one too but I travel a lot and don't always have it, this brought me to the thought of sharing this tip.
Love the rainbow sweater!
Thank you so much Granny Bee. It is one of those 'why did I not think of that?' moments! 😄
😀
Wow! You taught me something new. Thank you. Also Sara Sach from Coffee and Crochet with Sara sent me to your channel.
Awesome! Thank you! I've been wondering why this video was so popular. I love her that was so nice.
Wow! I saw the pattern for your sweater online! It’s so lovely to see it worked up! Very nice job
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for teaching me this!! Makes perfect sense!
You are so welcome!
Wow, I never knew that. That is wonderful to know.
I'm glad it was helpful
Yes! I’ve always rolled up my yarn with a finger/s between the ball and winding yarn. Hard balls of yarn make me sad. 🦋
Me too! It's the way my mother taught me to wind wool, and she started knitting about 1920!
Me too, I feel sorry for the yarn.
😊
I learned to do it this way 80 years ago when I was taught to knit( I am 90 years old)
Great idea. Thank you. God Bless!
Thank you.
That was very helpful! Thank you!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much! I didnt know the finger trick. ❤😊
You’re welcome 😊
Love your sweater
Thank you, that was my first "fun" sweater.

This is the way my grandmother taught me over 30 years ago.
Wow the sweater you made that you’re wearing omggggg that’s the best I’ve seen and I’ve seen so many beautiful ones but yours is the best 100%❤!!!!
Thank you so much!!
Thank you❤
My pleasure
I've been rolling yarn that way for over 60 years.
🙂 I see you learned at a very young age.
I have always wound mine too tight, I guess. I did not know the secret of rolling over my finger! Thank you very much!
You are so welcome!
Now I know why my yarn is always stretched out! Thanks Granny Bee🤭
You are so welcome!
I do mine like that but I didn't know to put ur finger between every turn! Thank u for ur knowledge
You’re welcome 😊
Please tell me you will eventually have a tutorial or pattern available for those sweaters. They're gorgeous.

Love lot ❤ Chris tiepessee
Use a Nostepinde, instead. It will automatically create that cushioning so that you don't stretch the yarn.
I have never heard of One of those I'm going to have to check that out.

I used to do it this way and forgot how to make by balls of yarn not stretchy
It's easy to forget

Glad you're here
Newbie #62 💗💗pattern for the first cardigan please
That is the Flight of Fancy Cardigan, a free pattern from Lionbrand.com I added the flowers and pockets extra. Beginner friendly.
Why the heck dont they just sell it in balls
Right? Then they would actually roll in those yarn bowls.
