Excellent repair tips Radi. You definitely know your stuff. I'm currently winning your eBay auction.
You brought back a lot of memories for me with this toy repair Randi. This exact Tomy Digital Derby was a Christmas present for me, I believe it was in 1978. It had the distinction of being the first handheld electric toy I ever received and I played the crap out of it. I am still amazed at the mechanical complexity of this toy today. Those Tomy engineers were on a whole different level, back in those days! I still have a Tomy Digital Derby in my handheld toy collection, just like you do Randi. Thank you for taking out the time to explain, in full electrical and mechanical detail, how this amazing machine works. It was quite an amazing toy to have in the late seventies. I hope you are doing well Randi! I really enjoyed watching this video this morning. Thank you very much again!!! Fred
Hi please watch Watchman on the Wall 88 on UA-cam
Love it! The confidence and ability you’ve achieved when working on these complex toys is admirable.
Thank you so much 😀
@@RandiRain you're welcome. I know we can't save everything, but a lot of those Tomy toys shaped my childhood and I wish I had held on to a few.
What a great way to teach hand / eye coordination .
There's a real game in there.
@@RandiRainhi Randi I'm looking for would i call the connection board where all wires would come together. mine snapped in half. tried to fix it . didn't work out.. is this something you sell or can recreate. thank you
Great work Randi 👍
One year, maybe 78 or 79 going off my recollection of how old I was, I got a Hit n Missile and my brother got the Digital Derby. Both were lost over the years, but I've since replaced them. I thought they were pretty cool when I was 8 or 9.
It's a shame Tomy didn't do more with its EM games. But right around the time these came out is when the first LED games started showing up like those little dot football games. Plus the Atari came out and got popular. Like TTL, EM's days were numbered.
Oh yeah, and they tried with the Tomytronics games, but didn't hit as big.
I had one of these! Will keep this video in mind if I get one that is not working :)
Had the power of the internet existed in the 70s, my childhood toys would have survived my curiosity when they failed. I admittedly had much more joy in the disassembly of a failed toy than the play itself. And, sometimes, I managed to repair the toy.
I hear you.
Same here, though sometimes my curiosity didn't wait for them to fail.😬
lol
I’m always amazed at the genius of many of these toys. Thanks, R😊andi !!!
My pleasure 😊
Another one saved! I actually watched your last video from a long time ago fairly recently and have repaired three of these now (and a few space turbos too!) bought on ebay in the uk - they're called 'demon driver' over here - so thanks again for these videos! I'm still nowhere near as confident with the mechanics as you are though, and still find it pretty daunting opening a gearbox even when I know what I'll find inside! I also had one that was a bit of a mess cosmetically and mechanically, so that one didn't get saved but I did have some fun converting it to play something else so its at least unique now :)
Awesome... Glad I could help in some way. I'm actually surprised myself that I can open these things up so easily now. I'm not sure when it happened.
I LOVE that game so much as a little kid!!!!! The design and engineering put into a game is so cool.
That whole gearbox thing at 14:30 is insane. I'd love to understand the design process to these. Did a mechanical genius come up with the whole game, or did a game designer give an assignment to the mechancial genius to make his idea work?
the later is usually how these things come to be.
My guess is that they had templates that these gears all worked on, and they could interchange them into injection molds to create pretty much whatever they needed.
You should fix a Lakeside “Flying Devils” airplane duel game from 1985. Nobody on youtube has a video up showing them being used, only the tv commercials. :)
I've done the Vertibird.
Hey Rand I remember that
Video what's it been 5 yrs
I’d love to see a company make mechanical games in this modern era. Who knows what they can come up with up with.
I had this one but if I remember correctly it was a Sears model. So that’s how it worked.
Sears did sell a lot of TOMY stuff and this did come out under some different names.
Hi Randi, another great video! Question, I have this exact game as well, but without a battery cover. I was wondering if you'll be making more of the battery cover and selling it online?
I made it years ago. If I can find the mold and it's still good I can make a battery door for you.
Had this as a kid, loved it. I’m sure it got tossed long ago, how foolish we were! I found one second hand that has the same issues, where do you get the gears and how can you know if they are the right ones?
They're the most common gears. You can buy assortments on ebay.
i had DIGITAL DERBY long ago i believe it was 1980 ! it broke and i got rid of it 😞i miss it so much
Girl!! I love your channel! Love them boobs too, but your repairs are the best! I just used your methodology to fix my digital derby and now it operates perfectly! Thanks Randi!!
I’m looking for a Omnbot 2000
🙏🏽♥️😊
I took this thing all apart, and I couldn’t figure out how the race cars when they collide activates the alarm circuit but I did find out and I will post it. Your video was pretty good.
The bulb is bad in my unit. Where do I get another?
Just have to find a 3 volt lamp. Try Mouser.
When I was looking through the drawers in my shop, I found I had some really old mag light replacement lamps I believe that worked out better than the original it I was better than the original. When I removed the lamp that was bad, I saw all the cars on the film strip and the plastic car you drive knows you crash . Or crash detection. there are a long gated holes in the film strip. I filmed it. I might post it the whole process.
@@jameseiden2340 I have another video where I show how it works. And I even have the wiring diagram. This was just a breakdown to show how it all comes apart.
Hey Rand better check your Gear Stock .
At the rate your Going
Need to stock up
Can you recommend where to find replacement battery contacts for this unit?
I can't seem to find any matching this design? One of them is broken off and I need to find a replacement. Since I'm gonna go through the trouble of removing what's left of the old one, I'd rather replace them both while I'm at it?
If you watch some of my other videos, I get brass sheets and make my own. I don't know of any replacements you can buy.
I was wondering with your experience repairing Digital Derby games, what seems to be the main problem with the games not working? Thank you for your time
All the ten or eight tooth gears being cracked. Oxidation and corrosion on the metal leads that connect the timer, collision system, and batteries. Then probably the motor hasn't spun in quite some time and needs the congealed grease cleaned up inside. After that would be other size gears being cracked.
@@RandiRain Thank you for your quick response especially on this holiday I really appreciate it
Ive got one I wish I could get fixed. Anyone know a place that'll repair Digital Derby?
Message me and I can probably find you someone.
@@RandiRain that would be awesome .... uhhh .... how do I message you? I tried a couple years ago on Facebook, would that be how?
I’d swap the bulb with a LED
Adam Savage just did his own nostalgic takedown of this device... apparently he didn't study your methods.

Typical... Just typical. He's too good to watch my videos.. :-)
Android app if anyone is interested.
Can I send you repair?
I don't have the time, sorry.
@@RandiRain thanks 🙏
I keep it for memories
man what one had to do to get a mobile game without the transistors and what not
so how is the ugly spanish bot doin?
