Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (alternatively and internally known as Alone in the Dark 4) is a survival horror video game and the fourth installment and first reboot of the video game Alone in the Dark, developed by Darkworks and published by Infogrames Entertainment, SA.[3] The game was released in 2001 on several platforms including Microsoft Windows, PlayStation, Dreamcast, and Game Boy Color. A PlayStation 2 version of the game was also released several months after and only in Europe. - Ігри

I love the inclusion of the GBC, it's like comic relief, most of the shots look like they're happening in broad daylight.. under the sea! 😂

Yeah, but consider the fact that it's a game running on the goddamned Game Boy Color we're talking about. Not even the Advance, but the Color, basically little more than a portable NES. Keep that in mind and you might actually realize how impressive this was at the time, and how much of a commendable effort this was on the development team's part. Even more than that, it was more than just a simple tech demo - it was quite playable, albeit on the short side once you knew where to go and what to do. I got, played and finished it at launch and it left such a good impression on me that I ended up revisiting it once or twice over the years, mostly around Halloween, just for the nostalgia and feelgood treat. I played through the Dreamcast version too a few months later in order to get the full experience, sure, and it was a quite good survival that captured nicely the Lovecraftian undertones of the original Amiga and DOS games, but still I keep the softest spot for that apparently silly but strangely endearing GBC version.

Surprisingly even the PS1 looks damn good due to the pixelated Visuals you can see details on Ed´s Coat better then the blurry Textures of the PS2 Version. The details are generally better on Dreamcast and Windows.
Nobody noticing the differences in the background music? Somehow PS1 is by far the best in this regard. Dramatic, energized and loud. Lot's of stereo effects. The others are muffled in comparison.
I grew up with the ps1 version and yes in music department ps1 is hands down the best! and for graphics dreamcast version unless there are mods for pc.
The PlayStation version was the best version in regards to music, being the only one that got it right. The DC, PS2 and PC versions all share the same defect of distorsioned music, which really takes its toll in the game's atmosphere and experience.
In regards to controls the PS1 and PS2 versions were the best. The Dreamcast version suffered from lack of enough buttons in the DC's controller. The worst version in this department was the PC one, feeling very awkward on a keyboard.

Nice video. This game is really impressive for its time and it still looks really good today. I think this is best played on pc or dreamcast. The pc has the best version with really snappy loads between sections but dreamcast is a close second. What's the fps on dreamcast ?
I have seen the version of PS2 emulator (PCSX2) with HD Textures it looks very good.

In the end , the Game Boy Color version left a lot to be desired. Yet, it's still the best game on the GBC in terms of graphics and also one of the best in sound and music departments. It has a LOT of diferences compared to the other versions (characters, storyline, progression, items, puzzles) almost feeling like a beta version. It was the first one to be finished, which explains a lot of the differences.
I remember back in the day Spanish Magazines as Hobby Consolas selling smoke and mirrors with the PS2 version, assuring it was far superior than Dreamcast one. The only plus of this version is having facial animations for characters on real time cutscenes (which is something that DC can also easily do, but some reason Darkworks didnt implemented until PS2 version). Also the convinience of having the game on one disc, thanks to DVD....Anything else, DC Alone in the Dark IV looks better than PS2 version. PS1 version looks very good, considering it´s hardware... Some lighting effects are great! GBC version is a tech miracle and probably one of the most advanced 8 bit games ever created.
PS2 had the best shadows but I think the DC looked less aliased. PC had best textures/resolution but the little oval drop shadow under Edward was kind of funny after seeing the glorious PS2 shadows.
The PC version also has high-quality shadows that you can set from the settings panel before launching the game.
@@luisfertauYea, but the launcher doesn't work on the Steam version for some odd reason. There is another way to config the resolution, but not the shadows.

Welp, GBC version is great for a tiny late 90s portable console. I beat it on my phone and it keeps that eerie atmosphere

The PC and PS2 have the worst sound quality. I would rather play the ps1 original for the better sound any day. It sounds even better than the Dreamcast. I consider sound quality a higher priority than fancy graphics in horror games. Besides, the retro look of the ps1 just adds to the game's atmosphere.

Yes, I am using Redream. I don’t use 4K quality, I don’t want to pay) I tried different dreamcast emulators, but I didn’t find anything good, and redream was a great find, so I use only this emulator.
Retroarch Flycast core is a good emulator.

Jeez this _completely_ misrepresents the PC version. It can run at much higher resolutions (4:3 only, widescreen stretches it), and has the PS2/DC shadows too. Go watch a playthrough if you want to see what it actually looks like
What tv is best for games around this time. I have heard modern tvs don't do them justice
I don't understand why PS2, which should be better, has worse sound than all of them, PC also has the same thing and I'm referring to music, PS1 has better sound than all of them.

A pity the PC version doesn't have PS2/DC shadows or PS2 lip sync... otherwise, with PC better backgrounds, it would become the definitive version
unless there are texture packs for the pc or dreamcast version. the ps2 version using PCSX2 is the way to go..can upscale it to 4k

PS2 version has a considerable disadvantage: loading times (longer and more numerous)... although maybe PCSX2 disk speedhack could easen them
@@Espadasilenciosa its actually not that long loading to be honest. im not even running it of my SSD. ihave it and my pcsx2 currently on my WD black hard drive.

There's no clear winner here, but there's two clear losers. The Gameboy Color is impressive in that they managed to get a game like this on the system in the first place, but it's obviously a last choice to play regardless of that feat. The PS1 version is a general downgrade and it's clear the game was designed with the Dreamcast in mind, so that's off the table.
But, between Dreamcast, PS2 and PC? Dreamcast has the highest quality sound. I'm not sure how the PS2 and PC end up sounding SO bad compared to it (so muffled I often can't even tell what I'm listening to in those clips), but Dreamcast comes out ahead there. PC has the highest quality background art by far, and can be run in a higher resolution for what that's worth. PS2 has one unique feature. The mouths actually move when characters speak! However, for those outside of Europe that version is a no-go unfortunately, and it's terrible sound quality still hurts it overall.
I think in the end, I have to recommend the Dreamcast version. Sure it doesn't have the lip syncing the Europe exclusive PS2 version does, but it's sound is the highest quality of all of them by such a large degree it's not even close, and while the backgrounds in the PC version are crisper and more detailed, it doesn't quite overcome it's sound weakness. Now, if the modding community fixed the sound issues then I'd give it to PC. I'd love to do that, since in my mind the PC feels more like the "home" of this franchise, but right now? I'm giving it to Dreamcast.
I might disagree. I played both ps1 and Dreamcast. And while the Dreamcast audio is good, the ps1 still sounds better (it even has reverb effects). This game was designed with ps1 hardware in mind since the beginning (early trailers and gameplays are using the ps1). But the Dreamcast is still a good option to play.
