      +Jon Car not comparable to a $150 huffy from Walmart. These are hand built, bespoke bikes built in the US. There are quite a few small bike factories selling hand built, non-electric bikes for the same amount. I do agree it's a bit steep in price, but not even close to some Walmart/Home Depot/eBay hodgepodge DIY.

    I built an electric bike from a kit, so I can provide some insight on why they cost more than people expect. It's the battery. I spent around $1000 on just the bare cells for a 1 kwh lithium battery. That's just the cells. You still need to assemble them into a usable pack, add battery management electronics, a case, etc. A good motor is a few hundred bucks, and then you need motor controller electronics and a throttle. So, you're at around $1500 in parts before you have even started talking about the bike part of the bike, like frame, wheels, derailleurs, brakes, etc. Then the company assembling and marketing them has to pay their overhead and make a profit. You can buy electric bikes for less than $1000, but they will compromise on the size and quality of the battery and motor.

    • @Patrick94GSR
      @Patrick94GSR 8 років тому +8

      +Dan Sanger Exactly this. Factor in a handmade frame built here in the US (custom bike frames easily cost multiple thousands of dollars) and the cost is totally justifiable.

    • @kentallard8852
      @kentallard8852 6 років тому +1

      Would economy of scale have factor in as well? This is 5 guys basically working as artisans - if they had orders for thousands of bikes, worked a full assembly line, placed bulk orders for their parts - how much would costs go down?

    • @koloblicin
      @koloblicin 5 років тому +2

      guys it changed.
      lithium batteries are much cheaper now. also the controllers and hub motors.
      if you have a small old motorcycle you could convert it into a quite fast ebike (130kph+) with spending less than 2500$,
      if you buy electrics and batteries from china, motor from zelena vozila and if you assemble the battery yourself.
      easy, i will do it soon, parts are already here with me, except batteries.

      Revenue - yes, but his business is probably not all that profitable.

      *****
      You could, but he's making these by hundreds, I believe he rents something bigger than a two car garage.

      ***** That depends on how big of a machine you need. I don't need to find anybody to run a CNC machine, I can do that myself. I got a Machinist One Diploma, and 2 years of Mech/Eng.
      You don't need a really expensive machine to build small parts. It's CNC, all I got to do is find some fool that can take a part, put it in, hit cycle, and take it out, and I can find those where I live all day long for less than $9 an hour. The truth is though, this guy isn't selling 5000 of those bikes a day, probably 500 a year more like it.
      20-25K and I would have everything I need to open shop. You turn your profits over and buy more equipment till are in the black and have all you need.

    • @benderbg
      @benderbg 8 років тому +7

      +anguy11 Price is not the only factor that determines how well a product will sell. He found a niche market, making an item not a lot of people desire. That leads to him having freedom to decide on the build quality and the final price. When you have low competition and high quality product it will sell regardless of the price. Its not an expensive soda drink, its "I want to be unique and stand out" type of product.

      +swSephy | Sim Racing Just "A" motorcycle. I bought two perfectly working motorcycles for a purchase cost of $2600. But I also had to pay sales tax, annual registration costs, plate cost and insurance which amounted to a couple hundred more. The difference is these bicycles are essentially hand made and hand assembled and come with some of the advantages of having a motorcycle but without uncle sam and law enforcement up your butt. In insurance and registration costs I spend $140 for one bike and $350 for the other each year. It doesn't take long before you are way past the purchase price of this bicycle.

    • @EvilSSP
      @EvilSSP 8 років тому +56

      +XLPCX Which requires a motorcycle license, registration, gas, and has to comply with motorcycle laws. This is still a bicycle, you don't need any license for it at all not even a moped license, you don't register it, it doesn't take gas, and you can ride it on the sidewalk right up the door of your apartment/school/job/etc and not get arrested. $5k is a lot of cash, but this is also the more practical option for a lot of people who live in over populated cities where owning a car or motorcycle is more hassle than it's worth.

    • @wcxctrack829

      XLPCX
      Mopeds still require a license/registration/tags/gas. This doesn't.
      Now, I'm not saying what he makes isn't ridiculously expensive, and there are far cheaper ways to get the exact same thing, but if you can afford it then it does look like his options are very nicely done. People spend way more money on way stupider crap than this. Some people buy Starbucks every single day and that can easily add up to $2k a year.

    Sure it's not cheap, but you guys need to realize it's not targeting people who would spend $2,500 on a used motorcycle. The target market is guys who would spend $5,000 + on a bicycle with no motor.
    Myself, I own four bicycles that cost in the $2,000 - $3,000 range. Could I have bought motorcycles instead? Sure, but the bicycles serve a purpose that the motorcycles do not serve.

    Something very odd it says on The New Tracker page, "The Battery ... ... our patent pending aluminum battery box ... ... It also disperses heat, allowing our high performance system to run at lower temperatures, significantly increasing efficiency, providing a range of 35 miles."
    Dispersing heat from batteries is waste heat, it is not greater efficiency. Running electronics at lower temps means they last longer but not usually more efficient, hmmm?
    Lithium batteries put current out at the highest rate when they are above 80 degrees but if the current put out is too high this is the prime time when damage to the batteries occur. They must be using really cheap electrical components to get greater efficiency when they are cooled a little?
    They also say that aluminum box is hydro-formed, it looks like something I might have made in my high school metals shop, cast aluminum sand blasted ...
    35 miles, 15 or 20 powered the rest peddled maybe ...
    ... hmmm, I wonder did J get scammed?

      I don't think you would have to peddle up hill. 3,000 watts is a lot. A human bicycling usually outputs 200-400 watts. However, I do agree that the price is excessive, but I guess they are custom vintage bikes (they are luxury items). I would rather build my own for $500-800.

      HackingDutchman In the U.S, we can get gas ones for out $180, and electric ones for about $210. The issue with the gas ones is that they're 2 stroke, so the gas/oil mix ends up costing about $3.00 a gallon, when standard unleaded costs $1.70.

      +Folopolis That's about the same here. You pay around 1200 euro's for a proper electric bike. Gas one's here are secondhand cheaper to buy, new ones are (almost) not being made anymore. However, we pay much more for diesel and gasoline here.

But most electric bikes probably start at $2000. The better ones are more around $3500-$5000. If you are a cycling enthusiast and want a cool cycle then this is more for you.

    BEAUTIFUL eBIKE, GORGIOUS eBIKE, nice design there are so few well designed eBikes it’s nice to see one that is fairly well designed. Everyone should own as a second vehicle something like this and stop funding the terrorists every time they buy gas.
    I think this is the BEST value in eBikes I have seen but they all tell little lies so I will look at the specs on their web page and see if I can see what they are lying about.
    I built my own eBike and it’s been running for 4 years now, it’s by far the fastest in town and it has features not available on any other bike, but IT’S NOT DONE YET! So this is how I know about eBikes.
    So I have some things to say from the start, any vehicle that goes above 20 mph should have suspension and not just bicycle fat tires, it should have real suspension just like ALL other vehicles on the road, while this is a very nice design for what it is, the lack of suspension will cause problems with durability and safe control of the bike unless you plan to drive slower than 20 mph most of the time.
    Hub motor eBikes kind of SUCK because the hub motor is very heavy around 15 lbs. and in the hub it is all unsprung weight, thus, on bumps the bike jump around a LOT. Also, how would you fix a flat tire on that bike could be very difficult.But this is a vintage design so for this type of eBike that is the way it goes. My eBike has its motor in the frame and it has full suspension, fixing a flat is no different from any other bike.
    This is eBike is powerful so on San Francisco’s steepest streets, going straight up, it would pop wheelies and become unridable, but I am sure their testers drive across the streets on those roads. Wheelie popping and loss of control from wheelie popping is a BIG problem with all hub motor eBikes accept those that are extremely low power.
    EBikes are easier to balance than regular bikes because they have power, if you are falling over you just hit the throttle a little. The great thing about well-designed eBikes like this one is it’s like a motorcycle, it has lights and other parts well bolted on so you don’t have to worry about theft. They are small enough to fit in an elevator and bring inside even an apartment, and theft devices can be built into them so theft should be much less of a problem, with regular bikes theft is a huge problem.
    EBikes are easy to brake and ride, no special rules, with regular bikes you would learn all kinds of crazy rules to avoid accidents, I NEVER have an accident, that is because I don’t have to follow the Cyclists rules I just ride and the bike WORKS. My eBike stops very quickly and I just pull hard and fast on both levers it does not end-over, the rear tire does not come off the ground, instead it STOPS! The front or rear wheels never slide out in dust because I use tires that never have this problem and the tires I use are well known for their low rolling resistance, so if you really know eBike design it is possible to build one that is very very safe, even while my average speed around town is 20 to 30 mph.
    Many people wince when they hear how much an eBike weighs, weight is really NOT an issue at all, it has power so power up the hills and peddle on the flats, no big deal. Bikes that have high quality bearings are always easy to peddle no matter how heavy they are, cyclists are obsessed with weight, they should be obsessed with bearings, they have lots of ODD ideas because their ideal bike is for racing and nothing else, so don’t worry about their odd ideas they are all WRONG for transportation.
    Cyclists will NOT create the eBike revolution that saves cars from themselves, it will be car and motorcycle owners because they will buy the eBikes for practical transportation. Cyclists buy bikes for clout to impress each other, they are all about the ideal racing bike, efficient peddling, and this has nothing at all to do with practical transportation.

    Years old, I love watching old vids.
    In the same year 2015 this kid made these and they started at @ $5000.00 with a range of about 20-30 miles per charge (which greatly varies depending on many things)
    And the Phantom bikes were much cooler looking, got 140MPG no matter what, and started at @ $1450.00 and went faster without illegally messing with the governor.
    No charge time with the Phantom
    Lithium Ion batteries are far more damaging to the environment from mining the resources to make them, and then the problems with recycling/discarding them (because lithium Ion batteries do not last forever or for very long with motorized platforms)
    The charge them requires electricity, (which is generated via fossil fuels)
    So, in the end, the only benefit is they are quiet. Not really worth the price difference to me.
    One could purchase 3 of the Phantom bikes and still not spend as much to purchase 1 Vintage Electric bike

    • @kenmaruska5818
      @kenmaruska5818 5 років тому

      I think most people ignore that when you buy an ebike with a large wh battery you are essentially pre-buying 30-50 miles of fuel because it only cost about a dime to recharge them. I sell some ebikes and that is exactly how the large expense of a battery has to be viewed and it's the most expensive element of an ebike.

    • @igordewit7357
      @igordewit7357 2 роки тому

      What the hell is a Phantom bike? And if its just a regular motorcycle,why you comparing them? Those 2 types of bikes are really different..yes,we know. And both have different advantages. But the being quite-part that IS the whole thing about goin electric. It's not emotion by sound. It's emotion by silence .So you experience the torque without the sonic mayhem. It's like the difference between a crosbow and a rifle. Both can hit the target ,but in 2 totally different ways. Perfect,..no competition.

    Look, I highly commend & admire the young man for starting his own business and his bikes are beautiful........But electric bikes are nothing new, and his PRICING is not only ridiculous, but GREEDY. That doesn't apply to custom builds & upgrades of course, but as a prime example of VALUE, I bought an all electric boat that is 10 feet long by 4 feet wide, it is totally unique ( don't picture some boat that "looks like a little dinghy" ) and protected under 2 patents. The design, engineering and production of this boat requires FAR MORE time, money, materials, and labor than these electric bikes, I can assure you of that. It is totally a single-piece, seamless, roto-molded construction, using the most advanced polyethylene that does not dry rot or fade and is practically indestructible, which is an expensive & complicated process all by itself for double-walled objects with all kinds of molded in features, ( don't picture "roto molded trash cans & storage bins" ) I don't even see how they are able to actually do it. Then there's the twin electric salt water grade motors that are TOTALLY HIDDEN & PROTECTED as well as the highly engineered & durable twin FOOT PEDALS that enable you to operate the boat totally HANDS FREE. I guarantee you this boat has TWICE the cost put into its production versus these electric bicycles........yet it retails for only $3,250. Yet this kid charges a price that STARTS AT 5 GRAND for a base model, and goes UP from there. That's insane. What's even funnier, is when Jay asked how many employees he has in his company......the kid replies: "ABOUT 5".......LOL. Sounds like he has a hard time counting to 5 or something.

  • @macroevolve

    This is very inspirational for me to see and sort of restores my faith in the future of humanity (even with the extremely small scale production here). In a transportation world dominated by Oil and the simple fact that it will soon start running dry, it seems this is the next step for humanity. This technology can be scaled up to the classic sedan and perhaps even trucks. On that note, I see electrically driven vehicles as being a suppressed technology, Tesla being case in point. Almost half of the states in our union disallow his cars being imported, they are outright banned in those states. Makes absolute zero sense, but in the eyes of the greedy few that have a monopoly on oil supplies, it makes perfect sense. The time to transform away from dwindling fossil fuel and a world that is literally burning is now! In the time it took you to read this comment, we burned 1,000,000 gallons of oil. It's a thousand barrels per second. It's unsustainable. This is our last chance. I'm not saying do away with it, because I make a living on race engines, but we absolutely have to change... On a different note, bring some Tesla cars on the show if you want to burn some rubber Jay. The Tesla Model S P85D is undoubtedly the baddest thing on the scene... 691 HP / 0-60 in 3.2 seconds / 150 MPH top speed!

      "
      Can you guys/gals get off the political soap boxes.
      The OP is correct and I agree that when people hear the headlines that the cars are banned in a given state, they think you can't buy one. Keep in mind, 99% of the population's mindset is that you buy a car off the car lot, not order and take delivery. So in most people's mind set, they figure you physically can't get one in those states. Hell, I live in CT and we don't even have a store/gallery, just a service center. I had someone ask me how I bought one then. Again, "they" think there has to be a Tesla "dealership" in order to buy one.
      The public unfortunately doesn't read the content of a story, just the headlines."
