  • Latest innovations are gradually becoming more involved in transport design and engineering. At first electric drivetrains were used in cars, then in trucks, vans and motorcycles. Now it seems that this smart technology is making its way in the bike world.
Why would you need electric drive motors, smart displays and infotainment systems on a bicycle? The answer is simple, modern living requires new technologies being applied to classic vehicles. All-electric bicycles make amazing city commuters and enable people to switch from cars to two-wheel rides in the cities.
It should be noted that many companies don't want to give their smart bicycles futuristic looks, on contrary, there are amazing e-bicycles that come with stylish retro designs, hand-crafted elements and vintage features.
This video briefly reviews latest bicycle inventions of 2019. All of the media clips, images and video material used for make this presentation are shown for educational and illustrative purposes, All of the sources are shown in the credits section at the end of the video.
Smart retro bicycles look extremely neat outside but on the inside they hide a bunch of neat features that could turn city commuting or cycling into a fun daily adventure.

OMG! That first one looks just like a Norton motorcycle of the 1920's like the one that T E. Lawrence used to ride. The wattage of the motor and the battery amperage is a bit behind the times though, but I am really digging that motorcycle front headlight, phat tyres, leather style trims and the general vintage look of the beast. I think you need a brown leather motorcycle cap and biggles goggles with proper pointy shoes and argyle socks pulled up over your trousers upto your knees if you are going to 'look the part' on this whilst cruising through town. In a word: Nice

I own the Greaser. It is truly a fantastic e-bike, well worth the 2.6K. It rides solid, smooth and turns more heads than Pamela Anderson. It's not overstated in design like some of the others in this video, but has the perfect mix of retro styling and futuristic technology. 9.5/10

Personally I like my ebikes to be lightweight and most of all practical. I can use mine on a trail and lift it over 'horse steps'. It has a range of over 100 miles due to no resistance Bosch crank drive and cost me less than £2000! The battery is removable for ease of charging and it improves security. Those fat tyres may look good, though that's a matter of opinion but apart from the extra weight they increase rolling resistance making it harder to pedal and increases battery drain. Question is, do you want practical transport or are you trying to make a fashion statement?

The best vintage looking e-bike on the market, considering looks, features, performance and cost, is the Ariel Rider W class. Mine was $1850 US (now $1699), can do 28mph, has a 750w motor, 7 speeds, hydraulic disk brakes, 48v 18ah battery. I have almost 800 miles on it, and have nearly zero complaints. I've also ridden it about 40 miles at a time, with heavy throttle use, and still had battery left. Nothing else competes. Some bikes might look slightly cooler (matter of opinion I guess), but they both cost more, and have lesser performance.

Datacube: awesome facts and interesting top lists those bikes that you refer to either are classics that are very old, for collectors. Or typically racing bikes. Built for professionals who race them. For the average joe or citizen, this is way too much money for a bicycle. It is like the $7k toothbrush. Or the $50k bottle of the worlds purest water. These things are designed for a select crowd. Rich and people who want to show off. Not for regular people looking to ride them to commute or to the beach. First of all, such a bike will be stolen. First chance someone gets! When it costs what a car does, but can be thrown into the back of a pickup truck, it is gonna be stolen...

You're right 5,000 is way to much to spend on any bike IMHO and I have been a avid bike commuter for 4 decades.
But, one thing about a bicycle. No insurance. Even at my age with zero tickets and zero accidents.
Insurance is 50 - 100 dollars a month just for liability not to mention significantly lower maintenance costs, no state or local registration fees (at least in my area)
Any bicycle over four or five years is far cheaper than a car.

@@Biffo1262 Pounds to dollars that is just under 200 dollars a year. But, lets say it was 150 just for the sake of argument.
I have commuted for 45 years and owned dozens of bike averaging around a grand each. In all that time I have lost just one bike to theft. Yes it was my favorite touring bike ever (1985 Univega Gran Turismo) But by that time I had already had it for 6 or 7 years. The total cost of that bike to me new was 575 dollars. And the only reason I lost it was because I loaned a different bike to my girlfriend including my best lock.
Cost of insurance over 45 years approx 4,500 dollars cost of bike lost $575.
Insurance is reverse gambling and the house always wins.
I'll place my bets on good locks and smart choices for travel and homeowners insurance and dogs for when it is at home. Even with my ebike which I hate to admit I paid too much for.

Great looking cycles, but some of them look to have very uncomfortable riding positions/geometry. Would have been ok years ago when they had an engine, but trying to pedal some of these cycles must be arduous. The transformation from engine to pedal power doesn’t work for some frames. More for posing around town than going on a long journey. Nice video.

    • @ertwander

I have the Ruffian (the grey one). The riders position isn´t as comfortable as on a real trekking bike, but it isn´t too bad either. Have been on several multi-hour trips without medical assist :-) The frame takes the torque with ease. Mine is 3 years old and has run nearly 1000 km. Not that much, i admit.
It comes with a Bosch electric system with 4 stages of power support, so uphill isn´t a problem (unless it´s VERY steep). But one have to keep in mind that it´s very heavy and runs on fat tires, so it uses the battery more up than a normal bike.

Laws here in the USA are not up to par with many electric bikes. I have electric scooters (like vespa) and bikes they only would go 15 -25 mph for 10 miles and after 5 years I finally got rid of them in favor of an electric bike (from Walmart less than $500) I get less hassle on the bicycle than the scooter, just because it looks like a bike. "Ohio" has a rule in place no matter the governor , if the vehicle can go over 25 mph it HAS to be tagged and insured. Being pedal assisted and low speed means nothing to law enforcement here. It all falls into if it looks like a "bike". If it looks like a bike with a motor or engine then it IS a motorcycle. Now we have these stand up scooters for rental with no pedals, folks are riding into traffic , on sidewalks, against traffic, through peoples yards... Laws have not quite caught up with the tech here and it is getting dangerous for US legally and safe wise. Best just to call them Electric vehicles and legally tag them, license, and insure and yes you need a drivers license too. All nice an legal wise then we are all clear and safe about them.
