for those of you like me, if u dont see the landmass blueprints then you have to enable the landmass plugin under the EDIT tab
Thank you
thats still complicated for me, so do click on that edit thing and to plugins? but theres nothing with a landmass there
@@wolfhack555 Yes. Edit -> plugins in the search bar type landmass then enable
I was looking for this
By god, thank u, u have saved me lots of time and tears
you just taught me more in 20 minutes than other videos have done in hours. thank you
Seriously! Idk why no other video I’ve watched talks about the blueprint brush. I was looking for a way to create a mass using the spline tool. Seems the most practical
Now that I know how to do some basics with UE5 this really helps.
But it was 20 minutes and 1 second :(
@@gustawkrzewicki1496 If you want to get specific....
The actual explaining begins at exactly 0:45. The outro begins at 19:01. In between, I suppose the actual creation of the level can count as an explanation. So there's 18 minutes 16 seconds of explanation, which is less than 20.
It took me a lot of time to figure it out but if you are facing a problem with your character walking through the trees and rocks, then only adding collision wont work, go to the foliage mode, then scroll down until you find the (collision preset) panel and then select block all dynamics. Hope this helps!
Ty for pointing this out. I will mak sure it's sorted ahead of time now that I know.
Thanks!

Popping by to say this was an awesome tutorial. Both me & one of my high school students followed it together for his independent project this week and we both got it done with little issues (on our end). Awesome job!
Can't wait to play around with this tomorrow. Should be really fun. Thanks for the intro tutorial, good kickstart.
absolutely amazing. love all the tips will be using this soon
Thanks for this tutorial, this was really helpful in learning some of the tools I didn't know about yet. Great work for providing this!
Thank you so much for making this! I have been racking my brain for days trying to find out how to do something like this. You just saved me soooooooo much time. You're a blessing to all of us still learning the ropes
Can't believe I had no idea about landmass! Such a useful feature
I came back to reference this video, multiple times, for the past 3 days. This was extremely helpful. My computer is just hella slow. I'm surprised I can even do any of this
Even though I don't think it is a tool to create precise and complicated terrain, but still a good way to do terrain sketch, thanks for sharing, great tut
That looks great, can't wait to try do it myself
love the video super helpful, the one thing I did not enjoy was closing and opening easy build systems 10 times when i could have just migrated everything i needed all in one loading of the map. Should not have to go back and forth constantly.
Dude. 30 seconds in and answered a question i've been searching for for a while. Fantastic tutorial!
this was a fantastic tutorial. I'm trying to make my first game and I've been really stuck. I found this and now I'm definitely going to go back to watch the whole Lyra series, maybe I'll finally get somewhere!
yo how has your game dev journey been going im currently making my first game ever with little to no experience
@@S4GGY it's a slow thing. I'm not the most artistic so learning how to sculpt in blender has been a journey. Add to that the actual game making itself and I find myself doing the whole thing in parts.
I now have a map, a character, an adversary and everyone can move... next is objectives then, who knows, equipment maybe or a start menu. There's so much to it that I just had never thought about but it has been fun. Thanks for asking.
How's your game dev journey treating you?
@@DragonBread hard and quite honestly frusterating because I feel like im stuck and cant learn lol but I hope one day I will break out of that
@@S4GGY what part are you stuck on? I find this whole thing to be an exercise in eating an elephant: one piece at a time.
You make a plan thorough plan then break it into tiny bits: make a character walk, make a room for the character to walk in, etc etc. I still get stuck a lot because i lack a lot of skills.
@@DragonBread I am currentlly just figuring stuff out still and I feel like the second I get something working the game breaks lol I want to make a game similar to dead poly if you havent heard of it its like a very low quality day z
I am working on the basic map design rn
Detailed, concise and to the point. Nice!
Really enjoying these videos. Everything is explained clearly and easy to follow along.
Dude I’ve been looking for something like this for YEARS…this is so much simpler than doing everything manually
I've been using unreal for years and I had no idea you could just add an ocean like that. I always made a plane and assigned a water shader and a custom post process volume. That alone was worth watching this for me!
Incredible! 🤯Thank you so much for this!
HI there smart Poly, I'm having some problem in my indie game, can you help?
Issue: I'm making an open world game (using UE5 and world partition system) everything seems to work fine but then I added a mountain using the landmass tool, after that when I try to load the whole map the mountain isn't loading sometime. (its in separate landscape layer) the map isn't that big only about 2km square.
So what am I doing wrong? Can you please point out the mistake I'm making.
Very nice tutorial as always, keep it up!
Bro, im only 8 mins in and this has taught me so much. Love it!
If you get the issue at 10:00 where you drag in the ocean and can't get your landscape back to its original look, go into the "WaterBodyOcean" details, search for "terrain" and under "Water Heightmap Settings", change the "Blend Mode" to Max. Then scroll all the way up and manually lower the oceans height.
Hope this helps some people :)
thanks
Thank you
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
do you mean when the fps drops to 1 or something else
W manz
This video was awesome. Just the right pace with everything you could want.
This has been the greatest help ever! Thank for making this!
9:33 do you know how to add an extra layer to this material? i want to add a snow layer but cant find anywhere that i can add the layer to it
I have seen a lot of tutorials on how to create "auto materials". Seems like you can add various layer into one material, incl. snow, water, rock, mud and so on.
This helps. Very cool.
I'm transitioning from Unity and Unreal just seems like it's full of nice suprises
did you stick to the transition 1 yr later
Thank you. I learned a lot from your tutorial.
Very simple and easy do follow. Well made!
I never thought id start to get the hang of any of this. This video has proven me wrong!!
thanks man this is great. keep doing more if you can!
This tutorial is very helpful and fast which is good for me thank you so much
Very helpfull tutorial for a beginner like myself with no knowledge about unreal engine. thanks for creating it took me about a day to get my world layout up and running
I'm totally blown away at the ease of this tutorial. I've been messing with UE for almost 2 years now and I haven't found a landscape tutorial that looks as real to a game as this one. And so simple. Thank you for all the help. I had almost given up on creating an outside environment. UE5 rocks! I'll be checking out the Easy Building system too fore sure.
Subscribed.
this is probably a stupid question, but how do you shape/resize the custombrush? when i click the white dots at the corners, it just moves my camera around
edit: i did an alt-drag and created a spline. deleted the spline and now i can use these white dots. idk why i couldn't do it before
Great tutorial, much love ♥️
I really enjoyed this tutorial, it was a lot of fun. The only Issue I had was that I wasnt able to find a way to "hole" my landscape so if I have a building with stairs going down to an underground tunnel I couldnt like erase the terrain near by or remove it (Grass texture would stay and if I tried to add a LandscapeVisibilityMask for opacityMask it just broke stuff)
go to landscape and to blueprint, add a new layer, switch from "none" to CustomBrush_Landmass, Make it a cap and move the whole layer down and boom, hole
Hope it helped! :D i have no idea how to get rid of the underwater effect though so please tell me if you figure that one out! :)
Great tutorial! Thanks!👍👍
Amazing video, simple and easy to follow for an absolute beginner like myself!
After two hours I feel like a pro. I'd thumbs up more than once if I could.
Hi, I have just one question, how to add "Lyra Player Start" to my project, because I can't find it in my "All Classes" section?
Thanks for the tutorial!
Amazing tutorial helped me a lot :)!
The only developer who makes me wanna learn unreal engine
How do I integrate that asset pack into that fresh project? I do not get anything shown when I open the Landscape-Blueprint Box.
go to edit > plugins and make sure you have the landmass plugin enabled!
@@SmartPoly Thanks.
this video learnt me how to go from 0 to almost 100 precent its a very good tutorial
man its so helpfull, i was frustrated and hated unreal engine, but after seeing your video i love it and its better than blender! thanks alot
Bro this is the best Tutorial on earth. helps so much
Awsome tutorial! I was wondering if there was a way to remove the grass at a certain spot on the landscape?
seen it last night and i must say it is very professional! you make it look so simple, but then i got to my computer and found out i got no blueprints in my brushes is this a 2nd part to something?
Good video. Thanks. What is your system hardware, pc ? I see is moving easily
dont have the landmass tool you started using at 2:30. nothing shows up in brushes at all, so i cant follow any further :/
Hi. Thanks for this great video. One question though; I dont have any Blueprint brushes showing up or any to choose from. How can I fix that? ( noob here, been figuring out UE5 this last week, after months on Blender and some Roblox Studio noodling).
Great tutorial, lots of love from India ❤️
love your content keep it up
Bro no shot this shit was the most helpful thing I’ve seen in a minute 💎
Can you paint a different material using a spline?
Also: distribute rocks and trees using a spline?
whenever i get a way from patch of land to load another the previous patch of land gets corrupted for some reason so i have to zoom around the map just to see the textures
i need help
guys if you have water problem all you need is to add water first and then make landscape an adjust where u like in that case your island base must be high or the water will glitch
For me the blueprint sculpting didnt work, when i placed it in the middle of my "platform" nothing physical appears and when i lift it up with the blue pivot arrow it sculpts on one corner of the platform. Any fixes? Landmass plugin is enabled
thank you for the amazing video , I just want to ask you something , how I can draw a 2d map then bring it into UE5 and level it up and make it 3D? is that even possible ? if yes a short answer would be really appreciated .
really appreciate this!
Hi Smart Poly is there anyway to change the materials of the terrain paint brush to a higher quality?
I created island and it was easy for me as i learn a lot from this channel...back days too.. but still can't solve one issue:
- Player Start I place (in correct position not under landscape) but still player falls under the map .
Solution: was to delete that and just hit play and it will spawn player auto but again character i can play with only seems to be able to navigate but other bots just fall under the landscape. I remember, I did fix similar issue at past but not exactly how.
This video was an instant subscribe!
The option for “Custombrush_landmass” ( 2:30 ) in the dropdown does not show up for me. Does anyone know why or how I can fix it?
sorry I forgot to mention to enable the landmass plugin. go to edit at the top left > then plugins > then search for landmass and click the checkbox to enable it. then restart or reopen the project
@@SmartPoly thanks
THANKS sooo much. Dude I thought it was over :D
Please pin this.
@@SmartPoly I looked for this comment everywhere. Please pin this comment so someone else can benefit from it too. At first, I thought it was due to a version difference because it wasn't an up-to-date video, and frankly, I didn't know how to find it. I was just watching the whole video blankly because I couldn't find this option at the beginning. It makes more sense now. If people do not know that they need to activate this plugin, they watch the entire video in vain. People need to know. Please pin it. I don't know English. Google translate
First of all, thank you Smart Poly for many landscape tutorials. Every month free assets video reminds me to go to market place to download it. Much appreciated! Can you make a tutorial on how to create a Flying island/Floating island like in Chinese fantasy movies? Once again, thank you for all of your videos!
well that would basically be this without adding water but the one problem would be getting the rest of the landscape to not be visible or collision-enabled. im guessing the building would be made out of 3d assets, unless you want to spend the time trying to make a giant temple in unreal engine with no assets
@@EvokerKing Thank you Hex, I did try some megascan assets to build a small floating hill. However, the shape is really hard to scale and adjust (looks so fake). Maybe I should spend more time playing around with UE and find more ways.
When I try to do an slope layer it doesn’t work
When I click on the imported Landscape , am I supposed to double click on it? If I dont do so, I don't see a "Landscape" drop down menu or heading on the right. If I do double click on it (I have version 5.3) a separate box opens with a "Details" and "Layer Parameters" tab. Also after the original migration from EasyBuildings a message "Landscape 1: Actor with Physical Materials needs to be rebuilt". When I try to resolve by clicking "Build Landscape" I get 3 error messages. They are "StaticMeshActor_1 Large actor receives a pre-shadow and will cause extreme performance hit unless bCastDynamicShadow is set to false." and "LandMassBrushManager_C_0 Large actor receives a pre-shadow and will cause an extreme performance hit unless bCastDynamicShadow is set to false". Update: I tried starting from scratch and creating a new file but as soon as I go into Landscape mode it says "Landscape 1: Actor with Physical Materials needs to be rebuilt"
Great Tutorial- Thanks for making it! Question - If you didn't check "Enable Edit Layers" before the landscape was created is there anyway to go back later and enable layers after the fact? Looks like only way is to create another Landscape.
yes. select the landscape and in the details panel, search for "enable edit layers"
@@SmartPoly thanks! Sorry for the Newbie question. :)
Thanks for the video!!
Heya! Love the videos. Im trying to add extra materials to the landscape material... i almost got it but the grass meshes are spawning on top of this new layer. how do i disable this?
I didn't think making a 3d game space and game was realistic for me to get into but after watching this, I defiantly want to get this unreal engine 5 and see if I can make this game idea I've had for a while. Great tutorial, Ill be back to reference this to learn what I'm doing once I download the program.
Best part is it’s free
Thank you for video!
Helped me pass my exam. Thx m8
Dude, but how do you add more landscapes? Like in Ue4 you could add levels, and make the map HUGE.
This is awesome
what if i wanted to add a series of lakes and rivers using the same plug in, how would i go about doing that?
I don't have any 3D grass on my landscape, any fix? It's just 2D
Edit fixed: Move the Landscape Terrain Slightly
hey I'm having a problem with the mi_stylized_landscape if I put it as the material I can't change any layers
THANK GOD A TUTORIAL WHERE SOMEONE IS TALKING YOU THROUGH IT!
and not explaining how to fix the water
great tutorial but when we got the the foilage part whenever I put the rocks or trees into the foliage window to paint it they material went away, any tips?
great vid matee!
When I apply the landscape material it doesnt show the stone areas, I have a lot of mountains but they are all covered in grass. What did I do wrong? Im using UE5
I did all like in your video but as i add the ocean and unmark "affect heightmap" on the landscape_waterbrushmanager it destroys my land, it adds everywhere water not only on the edge of the land - what did i do wrong? ._
It appears every time i do this tut again..
Verry good thank you 🙏🏻
When I migrated the two materials from the easybuilding map, I got the base texture, but it didnt have any volumetric grass, and there was no rocks in the slopes of the map. What am I doing wrong?
1:31 what's the scale being used in the chart? like, how big is the largest option (8129x8129) for the player in real units like meters or km2?
Also wondering this myself
its 1m per px so about 8x8 km or 64 sq km😉
Hey! Are you able to add blue prints to these projects? Whilst I am trying to migrate a building blue print into my project Unreal 5 seems to crash. Not sure if I am doing this wrong. Very helpful video! Really enjoying the creative process so far!
Also when I try and select layers I don't have the option to select them.
I'm not getting the option for custom brush landmass
is there any plugin for it that needs to be enabled?
Thank you great job 🦾
amazing tutorial
Great tutorial. Easy to follow. One thing I can't figure out. How to make it so your player cannot pass through the trees and rocks. Right now my player can walk through all of the painted foliage.
just go to the foliage painter and select the trees, in the settings you can enable collision
@@SmartPoly hi I’m working on a game named Apollo royal and I’m using the map in the video for its map but I’m having a hard time drawing it so I can map all the stuff out may you make a turtorial on how to draw it? Also very helpful video I’m getting a laptop soon can’t wait to make my first game
@@SmartPoly pls help i cant find the falloff window im new at this and wanna stick with it what settings have you got enabled that shows everything i need
As a hobbyist I'm curious about that, I tried a lot of times creating an auto material but failed each time. so in that "easy building" asset can I use that material thing??? anyway I will change their content and see :)
Hey sir,
what is the size of this file after rendering
Is it above 1gb?
what do you do when it wont let you drag the spline points for the island using "ALT" my keybinds are different then yours is there a setting i can refer to?
So what's the purpose of using the Landmass Brush and Water plugins? They are both beta/experimental so wouldn't that mean we'd have problems later on?
When you are doing the "overall resolution" is that measurement in feet or meters or what?
This video really helped me by a challange
