There's something funny in a tragic sort of way about Microsoft slapping down some fat stacks to buy Rare, and then shrieking at Rare whenever they try to pitch a game.

@@Alloveck My guess is some dissonance with the higher ups not realizing why the studios they buy out are successful in the first place. They seem to think the brand name is powerful enough to sell anything so long as it has the Rare logo shining on the box art. They're buying the brand, not the titles they'd make.

    • @GeneralBolas
      @GeneralBolas 2 роки тому +47

@@Alloveck My take is basically this.
At the start of the original X-Box's lifetime, Microsoft thought that their biggest problem would be a lack of console-style games: mascot platformers and the like. Rare made quite a few games like that, so they bought Rare to shore up their console bona-fides.
But then X-Box launched. And Microsoft discovered something.
It turns out that console gamers were perfectly fine with PC-style games. The real reason that PC games made for consoles were not that popular among console gamers was that most of those were direct ports of PC games. These were games designed around the needs of a PC, so the ports tended to be very compromised, both visually and control-wise. Once you designed those kinds of games *for consoles*, console players were willing to eat them up. See Halo and KOTOR as prime examples.
So the *whole point* of Microsoft buying Rare basically evaporated 3 years into the lifespan of the original X-Box.
So while Rare could make PC-style games and were willing to do so... Microsoft already had studios that did that. They didn't buy Rare to make FPS games. They bought Rare to make "console games".
It's like buying a set of hammers but also buying a screwdriver, only to realize that you don't actually need screws.

    • @cattysplat

@@Alloveck The problem was that Microsoft didn't want "kiddie" games on the xbox. It was a mature console for mature players. They relented only after they found out their competitors were getting it instead.

@@cattysplat I'm not so sure Microsoft had much to do with their decline. Playing Rare Replay gave me the impression they just had a hot streak during the SNES/N64 days that was running out anyway, considering those games are sandwiched between Battletoads (which is a terrible game) and Star Fox Adventures (which is a mediocre one). They seemed like they were always good at presentation, and for a brief window, they also had the gameplay to back it up (and even then, I found those to have their weak points. Banjo-Tooie is kinda tedious, and Jet Force Gemini's controls make it borderline unplayable. Blast Corps is fire, though).

I think this is exactly what happened to Rare. If Microsoft owns Rare, then an established popular FPS franchise by the makers of ****ing Goldeneye on a competitors hardware runs no risk of ever threatening Halo’s sales. For Nintendo, the Perfect Dark IP would have been far more valuable considering the culture around Goldeneye multiplayer for N64 players. Snipping the chance for that to ever be repeated in GameCube or Wii was probably calculated to be more valuable than actually producing Perfect Dark games themselves for consoles that had enough shooters on them already

If what was said before is anything to go by, it's also because Rare wasn't their intended target to buy. But rather instead they wanted Nintendo themselves. Which they tried doing so before, but got laughed out of their office, embarrassingly so. So not only to gain one of their IPs, but probably to put Nintendo in a financially vulnerable state, to buy them out. Which I guess is why they truly bought Rare.

But with only two games in the franchise and such a long time since we got one … it is like … Perfect Dark was not allowed to evolve as a franchise alongside the rest of gaming. You couldn’t just make a Perfect Dark 2 which played exactly like the N64 version because that would be outdated, basically anything you could do with it would feel like a reinvention insofar as it conformed to gaming as it has existed in the N64. Perfect Dark Zero was a solid, "Eh, it's totally fine" title for me. Gunplay was solid and graphics were totally fine for an Xbawks 360 launch title. Co-op was fun (but playing games with friends usually is).
Looking back, though, there were some glaring signs that it was thrown onto a new gaming platform and had large parts of its storyline butchered - the last half of the single-player campaign was a non-stop string of "wait, why did that happen? Wait, why did THAT happen? Huh, this new character seems important...oh wait they're never mentioned again. Wait, why is the final boss some Mother-Brain pseudo-mystic psychic-mutant motherfucker?"

Right before 360 launch, me and my friend went to a Microsoft pop-up to play a few 360 pre-launch demos. It was a big store setup with huge TVs and tons of 360 consoles.
My friend was a massive Perfect Dark/Golden Eye fan, with 1000s of hours between both games. He was a Perfect Dark maniac, especially in multiplayer. So hype for a sequel was real.
I remember playing demo of PGR3 and being really blown away by the graphics and gameplay, everything.
Then we got to playing Perfect Dark demo. After few mins, i remember looking at my friend and saying "is this it?" and he's like "it's just a demo!". And the Microsoft employee also was like oh yeah the final version will be much better. Because the demo was awful. Stiff awful controls, terrible graphics, shitty gameplay. It looked dated even by then. It really did play like an N64 game emulated on 360.
And needless to say, PDZ did not get better at launch. Terrible garbage story, terrible multiplayer etc really meant that no one gave a fuck about that game about a week after the game came out. My friend, bought the game, and then never ever talked about it again, except when talking about biggest disappointments.

As a huge fan of the original game on 64, I was originally HYPED for Zero, to the point I wanted a 360 just to play it. I actually liked both of Joanna's redesigns, as her original version was kind of ho-hum outside of the pre-render promo art. However I didn't end up getting a 360 until well after games like Gears of War and CoD4 dropped. Once I finally got to play PDZ after playing those it just paled in comparison unfortunately. No one I knew played PDZ, even people who had the 360 at or near launch. To me the game just kinda died after launching.

Goldeneye set a formula, Perfect Dark damn near perfected it within the limitations of the time, being way ahead of its time in the console multiplayer department.

Nintendo/Rare lost the contract for Tomorrow never dies because Goldeneye came out 2 years after the film did. As far as the film studio is concerned that 2 years past schedule was lost money and they could have made far more money had the game came out on time. The studio had no clue why Goldeneye was even successful and assumed EA was fully capable of making a game that would sell far more copies than goldeneye if the game came out on schedule.

There were plans for three expansions but for different reasons. Two of them later came out for free with the last expansion got canned. Although there's parts of it that could be played. I felt there's plenty of material for that episode. Not to mention, it doesn't do much to differ itself from Blood and Duke 3D. It's still surprising a new Shadow Warrior series happened.
