    Thanks, Meshidasan! I am born and raised in the US but ethnically Japanese. While I am mostly culturally American, I do retain some Japanese culture from my parents and grandparents. The one thing that I don't care for in Japanese culture is that they don't want to appear impolite or rude, so they will actually lie to avoid that. Tatemae is a good example. It's not malicious and I know it's to prevent hurt feelings but for me, I rather save time and be told the truth up front.

    This is one of the main reasons 98% of women in Japan are still wearing masks: it relieves them of the painful obligation to smile all the time while telling flattering lies. They still feel obligated to tell the gentle lies, but at least they don't have to fake a smile. I'm serious about this.

    • @andreiamendes9116

    • @commentarytalk1446
      @commentarytalk1446 Рік тому

      No it's not, they're conforming to society wearing masks. in the majority like ALL Japanese. The Japanese have been wearing masks in public since the early 00's and SARS.
      Women across the world fake-smile all the time so there's nothing special about Japanese women in this regard. In fact women smile more than men is another statistic as they generally have stronger social skills such as dissimulation, mirroring, reading body language, picking up on cues such as vocal or emotional state etc.

    We need just enough tatemae to keep us from clawing each other's eyes out. But I swear, putting on a public face and keeping it on all the damn time is a prison. You get old enough, you appreciate the liberating honesty of just saying and hearing the weirdness in everyone's heart.

  • @Jordan-inJapan
    @Jordan-inJapan Рік тому +30

    An interesting thing about the use of “tatamae” in interactions is that it’s not really seen as dishonest. The speaker is just using the socially appropriate communication style for that situation. Anyway, people usually give clues to let you know when they’re not saying their true feeling but just being polite… it’s up to the listener to pick up on these cues. Tone of voice, facial expression, level of formality… subtleties that are definitely harder to pick up if you weren’t raised in Japan.
    (Or if you’re just “KY”. 😆 )

Joke aside as an artist now I understand why there's wabisabi and zen, it's because to balance with kodawari.

    Hilarious. I love this. Actually all women are the same. Just women in America use something like sweet talk or pillow talk. At least Japanese women are polite about it. But it is good to know what they are really thinking.

    😂 this dictionary is very useful. I desire honesty more than politeness so I probably would remain single for life. On a similar note, how is it possible for them to keep up this facade when they aren’t even professional actresses.

    Very funny - especially Ken-San's "STFU!" The bes translator I've ever heard !
    Oddly, I admire how the Japanese adhere to politeness - are Western women rude in comparison? One might appreciate the attentiveness (perhaps in a strange way).

      Say YES and then pretend you forgot to bring the wallet. This is already in 101 of how to date with japanese women LoL

      However, I (as a independent woman) never understood that. Why should I pay for someone else - he probably eat more than me? I prefer separate bills.

    i feel like this is more informative than a comedy cause i seen many japanese shows where some japanese tend not to be honest on giving answers even if it obvious just in order not to hurt others :(

    So if Japanese woman want to say: don't call your babycorn cob a banana, she would say: what a tasty still growing cucumber?
