Thanks, Meshidasan! I am born and raised in the US but ethnically Japanese. While I am mostly culturally American, I do retain some Japanese culture from my parents and grandparents. The one thing that I don't care for in Japanese culture is that they don't want to appear impolite or rude, so they will actually lie to avoid that. Tatemae is a good example. It's not malicious and I know it's to prevent hurt feelings but for me, I rather save time and be told the truth up front.
@daenackdranils5624 it’s western-style comedy and arguably very educational for those who see Japan through rose-colored glasses. Personally, I love Japan and appreciate how well he sees both sides. (There are definitely 2 sides). He has a unique perspective.
Tatemae: "Meshida-san, you are very impressive. At 34, you have an interesting job, and you took me on a unique restaurant for this date." Honne: "Ken-san, I don't care if you have a small banana. All the women in the retirement village will be jealous when they see me dating you."
Thank God. Japan doesn’t need anymore Weeaboos and Anime Otaku. It helps separate those who are going there for something more honest and respectful and those who are just wastes of space
Meshida, you're the funniest Japanese I've ever seen and you are so informative at the same time. Had I known this earlier my life in Japan would have been easier.
This is one of the main reasons 98% of women in Japan are still wearing masks: it relieves them of the painful obligation to smile all the time while telling flattering lies. They still feel obligated to tell the gentle lies, but at least they don't have to fake a smile. I'm serious about this.
No it's not, they're conforming to society wearing masks. in the majority like ALL Japanese. The Japanese have been wearing masks in public since the early 00's and SARS. Women across the world fake-smile all the time so there's nothing special about Japanese women in this regard. In fact women smile more than men is another statistic as they generally have stronger social skills such as dissimulation, mirroring, reading body language, picking up on cues such as vocal or emotional state etc.
We need just enough tatemae to keep us from clawing each other's eyes out. But I swear, putting on a public face and keeping it on all the damn time is a prison. You get old enough, you appreciate the liberating honesty of just saying and hearing the weirdness in everyone's heart.
An interesting thing about the use of “tatamae” in interactions is that it’s not really seen as dishonest. The speaker is just using the socially appropriate communication style for that situation. Anyway, people usually give clues to let you know when they’re not saying their true feeling but just being polite… it’s up to the listener to pick up on these cues. Tone of voice, facial expression, level of formality… subtleties that are definitely harder to pick up if you weren’t raised in Japan. (Or if you’re just “KY”. 😆 )
We never learn to breath the air as the same we never learn about reading the air especially when things already complicated letter system romaji katakana hiragana and kanji, and in what letter exactly is they write the air and is it in keigo teneigo sonkeigo kenjougo form. Joke aside as an artist now I understand why there's wabisabi and zen, it's because to balance with kodawari.
3:52 Ahhh...This hurts so bad. I once actually believed a woman when she said that she will contact me when she has time, and was waiting for her to contact me within a few days. It slowly sunk in that was just her way of politely refusing my invitation. I have now grown up and don't fall for false promises.
@@neotimekeeper6592 Agreed especially when cultures differ so much i.e. US culture and Japanese culture but maybe this is also what makes experiencing the Otherness so cool. You start questioning your certainties and ways of thinking, making you grow as person
@@microraptorguyxu_et_al2431 Exactly! To be honest, that is the problem with most westerners, they expected the country to adapt to their comfort zone, they wanted to experience the luxury they have at their home country instead of trying to enjoy the uniqueness of the country they are visiting.
I don’t understand how Meshida isn’t drowning in women! He is so good at pointing out behavior and being charming. Then again I‘m a man so my opinion doesn’t count.

If someone asks what your job is (wanting to know your salary), and then keeps saying "how interesting" (not caring about the details), they literally asked for it, and then encouraged it. Entirely their own fault. it should be a lesson to them to not be so deceptive and indirect.
Hahaha. 😂 . Meshida San. U r really a champion. Best of the best. I just can't stop laughing watching your videos. Even by looking at your face I already started laughing 😂. Well done. Keep it up.
Tatemae always reminded me of American country euphemisms, especially ones like "Bless your heart," "Over the shoulder boulder holder," and "Me-n-you are gonna mix." The only difference is where Tatemae keeps everything modest; euphemisms let colorful descriptors paint a picture.
So, how would someone point out Tatemai, or the other social conventions that produce…. well lies that are being told to us by a Japanese speaker? What is the format to express the understanding of these social conventions and while I’m on Rome, I still don’t want to to use the vomitorium?
This is less common in Kansai women as they don't care about being rude. But reading the air is still important. If you get angry with them or use honne they will ghost you.

The biggest surprise to western men is that Japanese women are ... women. Thanks for performing this holy duty, Meshida san.
some of them are anyway.
Same 💩 different country.
Yeah… you’ve peeled away the first 3-4 layers of the onion. Maybe. Lol
