- In honor of the 20th anniversary of the Broadway revival of "Chicago," here are five major Velmas.
In order of appearance on this video:
Jasmine Guy-First National Tour, 1998, L.A.
Caroline O'Connor-Broadway 2002
Bebe Neuwirth (this revival's original Velma)-Broadway 1997
Ute Lemper (original London Velma)-Broadway 1998
Ruthie Henshall (original London Roxie, here playing Velma)-Broadway 1999
I’m always amazed when I see this clip how completely different each of them are yet each is great. There’s no best. They’re all awesome in their own way.
Caroline O’Connor is the ultimate. One of the greatest musical performers of all time. So much charisma. Wonderful actor. Incredible dancer. Beautiful and rich and characterful vocal tone. She has it all.
She's terrific, and I hope we get to see her again in NY soon.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Caroline is back in Australia. Saw her do Aurora in "Kiss Of The Spider Woman" last year in Melbourne ... INCREDIBLE!!!! ua-cam.com/video/VJS9B3l6oWo/v-deo.html She is rehearsing now for "9 To 5 The Musical" opening in Sydney next month ... (she's playing Roz). Can't wait!!!
Imagine a world with Caroline as Velma and Brandy as Roxie
Bebe did the best wrist Fosee waves....yep..... love her!
Ute is the best singer of these Velmas. Bebe is the best dancer.
I'm a musical theatre teacher. A "Chicago" aficionado. I saw Bebe 2x, Ute 1x while they were on Broadway. I Was very disappointed that Jasmine Guy didn't make it to my hometown San Francisco when she toured. So great to FINALLY see her here.
All fabulous! Bebe set the bar very high.
chita rivera set the bar very high!!!! as did gwen verdon as roxie.
The Broadway show is all about the dancing: Bob Fosse and Ann Reinking's choreography. Bebe Neuwirth's graceful movements were wedded seamlessly to the music and to the rest of the ensemble's. She made it look effortless.
That’s exactly it!
Notice the guy on Velma's left? Same guy in each of the last 4 clips. So he was there 1997/1998/1999/2002 ! That's staying power ! Great clips.....
That's David Warren Gibson. He did a regional production of CHICAGO in 1992 in a production staged by Rob Marshall and Ann Reinking, and then the Broadway version 1996 to 2003. He also danced in several television specials with Ann Reinking and the famous Central Park concert of Diana Ross.
I noticed him, too! It creeped me out a bit.
He needed to work!
Brain, do you need to work?
@@chrissi2810 Thanks for then info on David Warren Gibson. I love it when dancers keep finding noteworthy, consistent work.
Love Ute Lemper
This is literally a video of pure treasure!! Thank you!
Nice comment---thank you.
Bebe won her Tony for a reason. I love Jasmine Guy, but Bebe is in a whole other league compared to the rest of these ladies.
Agreed; she's a real actor, and from the first step forward, she fully embodies this woman. Her sang froid, her distancing attitude defines the show, but it comes from a place of character. The secret of the show is to use every gesture and dance to step to serve characterization.
Jasminris seems bland compared even if she does a great and totally fine job too and has a nice voice.
Ute Lemper is the greatest, hands down.
She's my favorite too.
Wonderful❗️Thank you for posting.😍
Ok, but can we talk about how involved and iconic Bebe Neuwirth is in this show? She played Velma, Roxy, Mama, and sang 'All I Care About is Love' for Broadway Backwards in January of 2018. She has played almost every prominent character in this production and she's been incredible every time.
Bella saunders all she needs to do now is Mr. Cellophane and Mary Sunshine
I wish people would stop misusing the word iconic
If you notice the statuesque blonde behind Bebe, that is Leigh Zimmerman (Go-To-Hell-Kitty) in the 1996 revival. Later on, she would a Velma in her own right. L.Z. was my first Velma in March 2011.
Ruthie!❤
Love, Love Love your videos, keep them coming!
Thanks---very glad you are enjoying them.
11 & 12th show for me this September....I can't wait!!!
love ruthie as velma!
One of the very best.
yesss
Bebe Neuwirth!
I saw Jasmine when Chicago came to Fort Lauderdale. Fantastic!
Thank you so much for sharing this they are all amazing the only one I have seen on stage was ruthie henshall. It was her last performance as roxie. Which personally I think she is better suited to xx just my opinion xx
Boy, I saw all of these. They were all excellent.
1. Jasmine Guy 2. Caroline O Connor 3. Bebe Nieuwirth 4. Ute Lemper 5. Ruthie Henshall
awesome video.... thanks for sharing!!!!! historic!
Hi Christine---thank you and glad you enjoyed.
oh my god Ruthie's Velma from Broadway looks so different to the London one (I have a boot of her as Velma in London). Those false lashes thooooooo!
Could you possibly send the boot to me in some way??
Bebe owns this role and could (should) have done the movie.
The movie was going for a bit of a different vibe with Velma. In the film Velma is more overtly emotional and vampy and it’s less of a serious role. And frankly, I loved Catherine’s performance. As good as Bebe is, there’s a coldness to her performances that I’m not sure would have been beneficial onscreen. If anything, Zellweger didn’t really suit Roxie.
Love these videos! I was lucky enough to see all of these Velmas live. (I almost saw Ute, but I got her understudy. Still not over missing her.) :P
Well color me shocked, I didn't know Jasmine Guy was Velma!!!
Yes, in a way she was second in line, as she opened the national tour in 1997 while Bebe was still on Broadway.
Love the woman in the audience, "Look at how flat their stomachs are" 6:56
I think the Movie was just so great and EVERY PERFORMER in the Movie was Just Fantastic and Yes they get " Takes and Do Overs " but it's hard not to Compare to the C.Zeta Jones " Velma " I thought she was the perfect Velma and R. Zellweger was the perfect Roxy.
CJ carp Youre right
Yes as someone who saw the movie first and then came here to see clips of the actual musical I couldn't help but be disappointed. My opinion might be polarizing but although these women are undoubtedly very talented I feel like they failed to portray the character. In the movie, C. Zeta Jones portrayed Velma as more aggressive even in her singing with growls and via the use of different textures. IMO that portrayal of the character rings more true to the story line. I mean this woman killed her sister and husband hello? lol. On the hand of reason though, these performers are singing for so many days a week and the use of those techniques such as growls and whatnot could damage their voices over time (I'm no expert though just trying to see why they wouldn't).
And well, the choreography in the movie was just superior as should be expected.
The movie just set the bar so high :/
The song 'All That Jazz' is in a different context within the show however, it doesn't take place in a nightclub or straight after Velma commits the murders. In the show Velma merely appears at the opening as a sort of narrator/MC to welcome the audience to world of the show - it's more of a wry smile and a raised eybrow, than the movie version (I love both but they serve different purposes)
CJ carp yes however if you look at the original original cast from the seventies Roxie and Velma aren’t all that young like they are in the movie version they’re more of older people maybe in their mid to later forties. Roxie flat out sounds like a smoker which could easily be her character
velma #2 is one of my besties caroline o'connor. anyway i could get a complete copy of the show with her?
aurora...,- hello?
She's fabulous! (Caroline O'connor)
Yes!!!! Obsessed with Caroline. She’s one of my favourite performers of all time in any genre.
Bebe.
Bebe Neuwirth: definitely the best VELMA ever :-)
I think I see the same back up dancer in several of these videos
Ruthie Henshall HANDS Down!!!!!!
Ill add....Caroline was this revivals Velma in Australia
My favorite Velmas are: Terra C and Leigh Zimmerman (who does appear in one of the videos, but not as Velma).
Holy shit that’s Whitley
Ann Reinking.
Chita Rivera has no peer in this role. I saw her six and a half times and she defied gravity. Jasmine Guy was also sensational. And Catherine Zeta-Jones was stunning in the film. Lenora Nemetz, the original understudy to both Verdon and Rivera, was also incredible. All the others....I find forgettable.
aurora spiderwoman...,- velma #2 is one of my besties caroline o'connor. anyway i could get a complete copy of the show with her?
I wanna star in a musical so i can get as lean and mean as these gals !
ruthie is the best Velma!!
y'all couldn't get my baby ruthie a better wig?
Caroline O'Connor ... A-MAZE-ING!!!
Yes, an exciting performer and one of the best Velmas.
Wow all these Velmas are great! Who plays the second one? I love Bebe, but I gotta say Catherine zeta-jones is my fave.. I know it’s a movie and different from live theater, tho.
Australian and London dancer/actress/singer Caroline O'Connor.
Catherine should be #1.
Who as the last one???
Faltan Bianca Marroquín
La mejor!

Bebe is Velma....
The male dancers are always the same.
I always thought Ute Limper was the best Velma, After seeing the film I felt Catherine Zeta-Jones was. Although I think Jasmine is very talented I did not care for her as Velma.
Ute Lemper was my favorite, although Bebe was pretty irreplaceable.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 I got to see both Bebe and Ute several times in the late 90's and although Bebe was always incredible and it's clear why she won the Tony, my personal favorite was Ute as well. She handed me the plastic rose at the end of one performance....great memory.
...also . . .there are too many dancers beyond the desirable age-looking for the cast.
For me, Caroline is the best, followed by Ute, then Ruthie edges out Jasmine, and then Bebe.
