    This has to be the most unique horror game I've seen yet. It's a secret virus.
    Discord: / discord
    IMSCARED is a pixelated horror game that intentionally messes with your head and puts files on your desktop. It's a unique take on "retro style" horror games. This one intentionally acts like a virus to spook you. So much so that it sometimes IS detected as a virus.

      something about no music can really bring out the creep factor. though i've always loved horror games that have really nice music; and then just the sudden stop. as something eerey just happened; and sure it could have been a jumpscare, but i just like the games that have a nice chilling factor then just outright being a cheap scare.

      @CallofDutyBlackOps28 I think the fear of silence mainly comes from you knowing whatever it is that's stalking you will most definitely hear you. Nothing to block the sound of your breathing or footsteps. Obviously the music doesn't play in-universe but it still has that coverage of the sounds for you. But that's just my theory.

    Yeah, the story is really simple, just a sentient virus that loves you and wants to interact with you via stories and characters it makes up. The 2022 remake added an additional ending that extends the lore a little bit more by connecting it to future plans for the game in a sequel to the empty house you have after killing white face. It's a really meta game, mostly just a conversation with the player in a lot of ways. One of my all time favorites, whose mechanics would go on to be seen again in games like Doki Doki Literature Club and Undertale that also talk to the player instead of the character.

    • @kittyoftheskies6146
      @kittyoftheskies6146 8 місяців тому +23

      Off is very much another good example of this idea! The intro of the game tells you that you're just you, the player, and you're in charge of the Batter and his quest, and it plays a lot with that idea, especially throughout the ending, by having you make decisions as you instead of for the Batter.
      I haven't encountered OneShot! I'll have to check that one out too!

    White Face is strangely sympathetic. It doesn't seem to intentionally harm you, with the crashes mostly being accidents. It just seems genuinely lonely. And if you give it the flower, it manages a rather cute, warm, honest smile with a heartfelt "I love you." I think one of the reasons pixelated things are inherently scarier than realistic monsters is because with pixelated monsters your mind needs to actively fill in gaps left by the lack of details. Realistic monsters leave nothing to the imagination, and it makes them worse for it because you're more than capable of understanding it just at a glance. With a character like White Face you are forced to try to interpret what you're seeing instead of being able to look at it and go "Oh its a face" with no further thought about it.

    • @Ahnock
      @Ahnock 10 місяців тому +136

      it's like how good horror movies tend to not show the monsters until usually the end because nothing is scarier than what the viewer could imagine. making it low resolution and a representation of something keeps that fear intact while still having something that comes for you

    • @m.dave2141
      @m.dave2141 10 місяців тому +46

      I agree BUT it is not an inherent property of the pixelated style, it is something that works in any design that's not super HD and leaves room for the imagination, blurred images of monsters, retro filters like VHS, polygons in the style of silent hill, it works in all those styles.

      And your mind always creates the worst it can when imagining horror things. That's why you ABSOLUTELY never want to see what's on the other side of a corner, or what's on the other side of the darkness. Because anything can come at you running from there or whatever. Our minds creates the horror.

    I have weird relationship with horrors. When I watch a playthrough, I don't get scared, at all, even sudden jumpscares don't quite get me.
    But when I play ANY horror game by myself, I become really nervous, paranoid, and scared. I am a long time fnaf fan and when my friend suggested I should play the game in front of her, with her being close, I was still nervous, even though I've watched countless videos on AI, know the perfect tactic, it still scared the shit out of me and after a couple of nights I begged to stop.

Lots of UA-camrs and streamers will make content on games with jumpscares because it’s an easy way to provide entertaining content, which in turn, encourages their fans to buy the game even if it’s not that good.
      It’s an incredibly easy way for devs to make money with as little effort as possible. Garten of Banban is the prime example for this. If UA-camrs stop playing these games and casual gamers stopped buying them, you’d see a lot less of them.

    i like this little genre of gaming that makes the game feel more alive by interacting with your outside of the game itself, like it gives the game some sort of sentience that it shouldn't have, to where it interacts with the player rather than the character you're playing as, one-shot and OFF are good examples (although both games have you play as a character that interacts with the world within the game, they both break the 4th wall in a way that makes the game feel like more than just a game, especially one-shot)

  • @Xuxu14
    @Xuxu14 7 місяців тому +16

    For me, 4th wall breaking is what makes games special, the feeling of knowing that the inhabitants inside the game are aware of everything, comunicating to us through the other side of the screen, now that is a true masterpiece of a game to me, and imscared is one of the best games I've ever seen.
    Edit: Also you never heard of other games that uses the game files to proceed the story and breaks the 4th wall?- You need to check oneshot and doki doki literature club asap.

    This is awesome. Everyone who's grown up with computers has an innate fear of "viruses". I can remember them being nightmares even sometimes - it's this fear of losing control, being under the mercy of someone you cannot see, smell, touch or feel, even anticipate; and the fear of utter destruction. It's absolutely perfect to make a horror game with such elements. Bravo.

      Jumpscares? Shock-type, they make you jump and release a lot of tension.
      Gore/scary images/descriptions? Disturbing horror. It makes you unsettled on prinicple, but it isn't really _scary,_ just makes you feel Ick.
      But the stuff that creeps up on you, the stuff that makes you feel like there is something horrid you don't quite understand? _That's_ the strong stuff, the dread that good horror instills.

      @doromizu. See, the problem is that most of them were extremely short, free experiences found on game jolt or hidden away on some random website. They tended to blend together a lot, so I can't name many. I can at least say the first time I remember seeing it, though, which was the old My Little Pony horror game Luna Game from I think 2011. The trick there ended up so successful that the MLP fansite that initially popularized it thought it actually *was* a virus and deleted the post about it soon afterwards.
      I think maybe Sonic.exe or one of the other many sonic creepypasta games from that period might have done it too, or maybe I'm just remembering the rumors of it being a virus. It was also a common theme amongst video game creepypastas at the time, like with Ben Drowned, Jvk1166z.esp, etc.

    I would like to add that I absolutely love the monsters from the LISA series, which originally was inspired by Yumi Nikki. While LISA isn't really a horror game, the Joy Mutants are some of the creepiest looking things I've ever seen in a game... and they are done with sprites. Dingaling, the creator of the series, just knew exactly how to use them to make them scary. They act as incredibly powerful and strange bosses that block progress, they often show up unexpectedly and can take out your party even if you felt overpowered five seconds ago, and there's several fantastic moments where you simply transition to the next screen - and they are there in all their paranoia inducing creepiness, ready to fight you with a boss theme that is closer to the SIlent Hill 1 final boss than it is a normal RPG boss theme.
    I have thought about them for a literal decade because of how well he presented them in his game. Monsters created by overwhelming passion, incredibly memorable and unique.
    Shout outs to my favorite indie dev, I am not being paid to tell you to check out the definitive version of his game - you just should.
    He didn't even let me pay him for the definitive edition because I bought his game a lifetime ago, how dare he!

  • @Th3_Sh1lv3r_sh0t
    @Th3_Sh1lv3r_sh0t 8 місяців тому +7

    My opinion:
    Horror indie game developers think that jumpscares would scare ppl. Actually no. It only gives us surprise. Not fear. Tension is what gets the job done. Because it makes you feel like something is gonna happen to you. Now you can't build up tension by adding scary ass music or anything like that but by using the uncanny valley OR the fear of the unknown. It builds up the tension more because the less there are, the more that people are to believe that this type of stuff can happen. Well what if it's another type of horror game like a serial killer game or a monster game? You have to have an ambience. Like the fog at 6:49. When you have an ambience like foggy air or wind blowing it makes it a better experience and making it a little more realistic. Then the sound effects are what's next. You see when developers use sound effects they use more fictional sound effects. Say for example your making a Wendigo so you use Wendigo sounds or sounds that are supposed to sound like one. You have to use something like a kazoo or a keyboard then low pitch or high pitch it.
    Thank you for coming to my TED talk

    i love this kind of horror game playthrough. no other bgm aside from the game, a commentary that keeping the viewer gets what's happening, no big edits, just pure content. subscribed. and looking for more horror playthrough.

    Your idea of a good horror game at the beginning aligns with my ideals for horror movies. It’s ironic because I hate horror (especially horror that sends chills down your spine and resides well after.)

    4:36 a similar game that does this (to a much lesser extent, however utilises many other fourth wall breaking concepts) is OneShot. puts files in your Documents folder, your username is grabbed directly from your windows account name, etc.
    sidenote: not a horror game

    You deserve all the support in the world.
    P.S: No matter how much subs you get or sponsorship offers. Do not. Never ever remove the chill comfortable sense in your videos. And your way of presting the video! That's your special power!

    You should try the remaster version of this game, it adds a whole new section that's a teaser for a sequel-ish new game

    I tried this game, at the start I thought it was boring due to the amount of stuff that you needed to read/find but it ended up being really entertaining!
    Had a blast playing it and I actually got hooked into it.

    I played this game about 10 years ago when I tried loads of indie horror games with a friend. I gotta say out of all the games I still remember this one very fondly. It scared you in a way that had never been done before and still to this day is way ahead of it's time.

    Theres also a similar game to this named OneShot, its not a horror game but it does use the same mechanics
    (SPOILER)
    it adds folders and files in your desktop and at some point even changes the wallpaper messing around the files is actually an important part in the gameplay since you have to do some puzzles outside the game and onto the computer itself..
    (Another Spoiler warning)
    One of the most insane features this game had is that once you finish your the game, you can only play it once, even if you delete the save file, if you DID delete the save file it results into another route in the game named "Solstice" which is basically the True ending
    OneShot is a really underrated game and needs more recognition

    I'm someone who doesn't think pixelated graphics are scary at all but when a horror game has great presentation like Imscared then it can turn into straight up nightmare fuel. Alot of people seem to forget first and foremost that presentation is what will hold your horror game together and the graphics are just set dressing to add to the experience.

    Just saw this video today, and im really happy that this exists! If youre right this may very well be one of the pioneers to meta games, and there are a TON of games using similar mechanics now (of course involving the super hot DDLC, and there was one really hacky one, and a lil pixel ish witch game too but i dont remember their titles anymore :( ). I think having a fusion of old horror tropes with new digital worlds is incredible, and some take it even further to AR/VR which is awesome. First video ive seen of yours and the content is great. Keep up the amazing quality
