How To Remove/Install Auto Window Glass
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- In this video I'll show you how to safely remove and then reinstall automotive 1/4 panel glass. This install pertains to glass that is held in by a seal whereas a few auto makers glue the glass in. Windshield glass is a bit more difficult but many quarter panels and rear hatch glass will be the same as this how-to.

Still an Xj god in 2023. My 00 has a rust patch under the glass on the exterior and after a few years of staring at this growing spot, lm finally tooled and skilled enough to fix it for free, at home. Thanks Matt!
You are the only person that I could find do this video on UA-cam
Thankyou wish you all the best 7 years later still helping blokes out.
Hey Matt I just wanted to say thank you for the videos. I found this channel a few months ago and i never owned a jeep before but I was persuaded by the Hope Floats project to buy a jeep. I bought a 92 XJ and installed a RC 6.5 long arm kit, ARB lockers, regeared it, slip yoke eliminator, 35 inch Mickeys and a bunch of other things but threw the whole project I always used your videos for advice and to get my rig where it is and I couldn't ask for a better trail rig and daily driver. Big thanks to you and the whole BleepinJeep crew
This really worked! Thank you so much for this informative video. The only issue we had was that it was -10 here in Chicago and the rubber seal was incredibly stiff. Still worked though
I actually used this video to take a window off myself! Thanks bleepin Jeep!
This was incredibly helpful. I replaced the seal on the window. Was done in under an hour and fixed the leak. Thanks!
Pulling replacement glass at the junkyard tomorrow. This video is a Godsend. Thanks.
Just had to do this job and let me tell you this method made it super easy!!! I locked my keys in the Jeep and at the time I had no motor in it or a battery connected, so I said screw it and cut out the back window lol Thanks Bleepin Jeep!
I havent seen this for years and years until today. Forgotten how much fun it is
I just bought my xj today and that window is broken I'm so glad I found this. So helpful thanks a bunch
You Sir are an awesome instructor,
Thank
You so much for the detailed procedure. 🙏
You're a beast. Thanks for making these videos. They're Gold for us XJ owners!
Brilliant - thank you so much for the time you took to put this on screen... Just replaced a smashed window in a friends car which went like a dream. Cheers from the UK
The string bit was brilliant. You just saved my bacon. I owe you. Heading to get glass in a few for my Subi. Thanks.
AWESOME!
Thank you so much.
I knew it had to be fundamentally simple but you made it very clear and easy to follow.
Thanks again!
(using this method to replace a sliding door window assembly on a 1983 Vanagon)
Genius! Till the end.
True.
Thanks! I never understood how to insert a window with such a strain until I watched your video. Will now start working confidently on the windows of my Mercedes Benz W124 Station Wagon.
I almost skipped this clip because I assumed you smashed the window to take it out, or it broke while taking it out. Awesome how to as usual Matt.
Piece of cake! My two back windows shattered on an outing and I picked two up from a wrecker. All in all it took less than an hour. Easy peezy!
Had to like and comment after having my glass out in 5 min after watching this. Screwdriver method for the win thanks mat👍
Watched your video and changed my first window. It was a quite easy. Thanks.
I have watched this video a lot and it helped out so much for when i got to take my own rear windows out thank you for the videos over the years on xjs they really help
The whole time I was anticipating it to shatter. . . But noooooo
Thank you for this. I’m waiting for my new rubber. The back two are really bad and seriously need replacing.
awesome I got a deal on a 2door with 160K but both left windows were smashed with this tutorial I just installed the long side window! quarter window! THanks
Using string, I've not seen that done before. Elegant.
muchas gracias amigo. desde Venezuela.. lo hice y salio todo bien..
the easiest way to install glass is to attach a suction cup to the inside and pull on the suction cup and string
Thank you! Had to replace the seal on 01 Cherokee Sport (no thanks to thieves), and didn't have the foggiest. Used paracord, but in the end, I got it on there. If I should need anymore tips, I'll be sure to come back here!
Wow! I just now came upon your video; Fantastic ! Thanks So Much for info.😊
Worked awesome on my xj thanks for the video it helped a ton!
I really hope that you know that Safety Glass is laminated to ensure that it breaks into small regular pieces. Regular glass would leave jagged shards and a much worse gash in your hand.
Frank Knockleby It was a joke because it hurt him in general. I'm sure he know what safety glass it lol
Frank Knockleby Not all safety glass is laminated. You probably meant tempered.
MrLightning1776 I was hoping. I may not have the money (or skill) to do what you guys do, but I love the videos. A guy can dream.
Joe Prieur Actually safety glass is a laminated product. Tempered glass is heat treated for strength. I almost hate that I know this. Too much useless information between my ears for the useful stuff to stick.
Frank Knockleby Tempered glass in automotive side windows is also considered "safety glass" due to its fracturing instantly if broken. The main reason manufacturers went to laminated was to save weight and meet MPG requirements. Laminated is certainly more fragile then the tempered.
The success smile caught me off guard😄
😮OMG , looks so easy, i have broken side window in my Jeep Wrangler, I gonna try to do by myself, THANKS BRO 👍🏼
Great video ...i understand now how can get down my rear glass of my Jimny !
Great instructional on the window replacement. Not sure why you felt the need to break the glass, was it worth it? Using the string/rope is a great idea.
My go to Jeep video guy, very helpful videos! Ill be replacing my glass as soon as the window comes, thanks bleepin Jeep
I'm a jeep FAN! awesome tshirt! - great video bro!
Hey this was great, I'm getting ready to replace mine and this will help a lot....Thanks!
Your video was very helpful, thank you very much!
Thanks for the video!! Just installed my window and it worked like a charm with no fuss!
Great video on the Jeep rear window. Good Audio & good video!! Thanks. Next do a Jeep XJ rear passenger window replacement (just behind driver side) - you do this good!
Damn now that was satisfying and helpful! Much appreciated!
Timeless. Thanks. I now have a rust free window sill.
Very well explained and good filming on this one
Just got the window out of a 25 year old VW Bus. The principle you show is correct, but when the window really sticks in there you just have to take it slow millimeter by millimeter. I made up a camfered (15 degrees) piece of wood about 6 inches long and moved this along the seam with a rubber mallet. Try to pull out the window before it is really loose and you will break it!
You don’t need plastic putty knives.. the singe best option for removing any glass is a 3-4” quality metal putty knife. If it’s new it need some work. You’ll want to take a grinder and sharpen/thin all the edges about 1/8” in. Your not looking for razor blade sharp and thin but close. Then on the leading corners slightly round them. This is the single best “deglazing” tool on the planet. I have to do stuff like this almost everyday for work and nothing beat a steal putty knife that is properly worn in. You’ll want one with a thick and wide a handle as possible and flexible blade but not overly it it will just bend instead of cutting out the glazing. (Why you want to slightly round the square corners. At least one reason why) you then work the knife into the glazing gap rocking it back and forth till it bottoms out at a 90* angle. Then you change it to vertical and (why you want a thick butt in the handle) you simply push it in one direction. Making sure to rock it in the corners to cut both sides loose. Then you can move to the next side in that same corner rock it back and forth and continue. This is how you deglaze fish tanks, car windows, home windows etc. anything that’s glazed glass. Just be carful we that if there is too much resistance don’t try and cut all the glazing in pass. Use it like a knife scoring it several times first. The only reason glass will break is if there is lots of dirt packed into the seam between the stop and the glass which will put pressure on the glass and pop it. If it’s super dirty then the best thing is to score it lightly with an actual razor blade a few times first which is more to remove dirt and dust then cutting the glazing out.
Nice demonstration 😊
Great video man, I was clueless on how to go about this. Thanks!
Wow, great video man! I'm gonna give it a shot! What's the worst that could happen...LOL. Thanks!
That's a pretty slick trick. That takes some general know how, and good hands. If you get stuck on a corner, you need some finesse to get it in place.
after all that work on installing that window, why would you break it? good video and might just work for what I'm working on.
I'll be honest, I had my doubts about how easy this would be. It was easier than I thought. The hardest part was yanking out all the trim to get the donor out at the junk yard. We had the window in in under 5 minutes.
Love the how to stuff, Doin' some DIY myself, the wife hit a tree at Jeep Jam. A JK with less than 10k miles on it and is already gettin' a second bumper and fender flare. Oh well, gives me somethin' to do I guess. Hopefully I can find the video and I'll post it on my channel.
Nice job man. Thanks
Great Video! Is this the way I would do the glass on the gate?
Yes, it is
One tip I did on my first window, I wrapped duct tape around both sides of the window, so if it started to fall, the was several strands of tape to catch it.
Thanks really helped out I’m about to go the junk yard and do it
Excellent job. Thx. for the upload.
Awesome video again. One question. What diameter rope/string would you suggest for best results?
man, that looks like a simple enough job. hopefully its similar for a 1998 4 door tahoe. thanks for tips!
That was impressive!
Niiiice! Love it! Excellent video.
That was fantastic can't wait to try it thanks again
On the same rig, is it the exact same way for the windshield? Mine leaks water some ... 89 Montero
Thank you kind sir!!
hi mat and internet folks.... my window from junk yard didn't come with rubber gasket. can i reuse that? i want to use the one from my broken window. does that pull on and off similarly?
so instead of a screwdriver to help remove the gasket, what about those tire removers for bicycle wheels? would those work?
Derek Christo that would work perfect because I was a glazer for a few years and the tools we used are just like the plastic tire tools
Derek good fuckin idea man. Getting ready for this project and that likely wouldn’t have crossed my mind.
Have you ever replaced the quarter panel glass on a ZJ? Mine just spontaneously shattered a few days ago. The rubber surround appears to be different on the inside than the XJ in the video. Are the ZJ windows installed using adhesive? I could figure this out on my own, but I'd rather go into it with a little extra knowledge from a veteran like yourself. Btw, I love all of your videos. Thanks for them!
I assume its glued like a later model windshield
Is the front windshield exactly the same?
I have a 2 door with the vents on the back, side glass... is there anything else holding that in? or are they just part of the whole window? I want to swap in solid windows that I have but I'm worried there might be rivets or something in my way.
That was brilliant!!! Grate video.
It worked.
Thank you very much 👍
Thanks bro you really help me
Great video, exactly what I needed to know.
Matt it's the same for the rear passenger door windows right?
Should the same rule apply for a rear lift had on a cherokee?
Hey Matt, what size string did you use for this? I really enjoy watching your videos.
Thank you!
Hi how can I replace a Nissan Patrol y61 gu 1/4 rear glass window
Thanks for the great video
would this be the same procedure I would use for a Grand Wagoneer?
this is so satisfying
This videos is amazing!
thanks bro made my back windows a breeze worked great on the back window to it fell out on the highway in front of a Cop lol. saddest part about it all...... i lost all my stickers
Great video thanks
THAT WAS SO FUNNY, YOUR A FUNNU GUY. A REALLY FUNNY GUY.
does your info apply to 96 accord LX, quarter glass on body and not on door???
what size string did you use. I got new ones and gunna attempt again soap up the whole seal.or just string?
What size string did you use!
Nicely done Sir! (Wonder if some of the womans' "personal lubricant" would slick things up for even easier insertion? Hmmm...)
Lonewlf7676 I really had to refrain from commenting ..... LOL
Women's personal lubricant just isn't up to the task. Use anal lubricant, like a real man.
edit: no but real-talk tho, use something water based, i'd be worried about anything else keeping your window lubed forever and it could be more prone to pop out. Just a manly thing i know because of man reasons.
Thanks for this!
Is it different if the window has chrome instead of just the black rubber?
could be.
Nice job, I have to remove my front window glass do you have a video about that or will you make one?
Windshield?? If your replacing it hire a pro. If not, kick it out. If you mean the front door glass, I have a video on that yes.
Thank you for your answer. I ment the windshield. I thought I could remove it my self, but after I read your answer I understand that is impossible. The reason why I want to remove it is that I want to remove the vinnumber plate placed on the dashbord with two rivets. Do you think there is a better way to do this. Sorry for my spelling and english. I come from Denmark ;))
I need to replace a broken panel like this. Getting the panel back in is a conundrum.
Using soapy water as a temporary lubricant (slippery when wet; no so much when dry) - genius.
Using cord as an all around lever (how the F*** can I just get it to just pop back into place?) - genius.
Many thanks.
What if your glass is a bit older and doesn't have that rubber gasket on it already?
Would this work with a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was told they use epoxy and I would get it out but never get one back in? I have a 2004 Salvage Jeep I can try to get out and back in. Looks like a great idea for the WJ. Not many Jeep Qtr panel glass replacements on You Tube, only yours
If it doesn't have the rubber seal then its glued in.
Does anyone know if a rear window in a Jeep Cherokee would fit a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the same model year?
Beautiful!!!
Thx!
