For those of you asking about using a plastic liner to make it more airtight.... Beeswax. There are tutorials on UA-cam showing how to make reusable sandwich wraps and bags, basically making the fabric waterproof with beeswax. They rinse clean, are natural and organic, and non-toxic to use against your food. People have used beeswaxed fabrics forever. 🙂
Hey Vanessa, I made this two years ago and it’s unbelievable how many times we used them. I made in different sizes and I did not know how much my family would use them. I’m here to make more along with the bowl cozies. I haven’t sewn much in a year (medical reason), but I’m slowly starting again. Thanks for freely keeping these online for references. Really appreciate that❤. You Are a Blessed Gem!
I love these covers. I hacked these by adding a patch of clear plastic to the center. I save everything so I have a stash of clear plastic from the packaging from blankets and comforters. This allows me to see what's under my reusable covers!! Thanks Again
Thank you for making this! I am going to be making miniature versions for my friends to take to university to cover their glasses when they are out clubbing to try and keep them safe from being spiked!
Now that's a great idea! I think I'll make some not for clubbing, but for keeping bugs out of our cups when we BBQ. And I like @kathywatkins9628 's suggestion of the buttonhole for a straw, too.
Seriously, I use youtube for help and education and hands down - this is one of the best channels on youtube. This is what I feel it was made for...it's very far from that now!
Pretty good job, kiddo. I would advise anyone who is making these covers to add 3 to 4 inches to the width of the bowl rather than just two inches. That way your finished cover can accommodate food in the bowl that is higher than the rim. Will also give you more versatility in case you want to use that same cover for a larger bowl!
Vanessa thank you so much for this series. You are amazing, with all your family and "farm" responsibilities you managed to produce 12 fantastic tutorials. Thank you to your cameraman too. You are a great teacher (and being a trainer of trainers for 30 years I don't give out compliments very often) I see that many of your viewers are suggesting that you keep making these "daily" offerings. As much as that would be a great fantasy - I would not want you to burn out. Seasonal series would be great enough. Your series reminded me of many projects I have done over the years. I don't have the energy nor videographic knowledge to put together a tutorial but would be happy to send you my projects in case you like to collect more of them Let me know. Again many many thanks. I live in Vermont and waiting for a hip replacement I need easy in-door seated projects. Happy Holidays, most sincerely, Tereska
I have only watched two of your video's ( the soup bowl cover & now this one ) and I have subscribed with just watching the first one. I love these much better then using plastic lids or covers and it will be cheaper and better -just wash no throwing them in the trash when finished using them -wash, dry and reuse . Love this idea.
I'm 7:59 minutes in, and I've paused this three times so far. The first time was to stare off into the distance to absorb the brilliant way you made the circle. The second was to see if you're still active before clicking the subscribe button (you are! And I did!). The third was just now. You see, I learned to use a sewing machine in home ec in 1977 (yes, I am old). I sewed on-and-off (mostly off, and not very well) for years. I have friends who sew, including one who does it professionally as a career. I have several books on how to sew. And you, my new UA-cam mentor, are the first person to ever point out that the numbers on the width & length dials refer to millimeters. I was totally clueless on that, so thank you! This is the second video of yours that I've watched (the first was for potholders), and they way you describe not just the "how," but the "why" for each technique is incredibly helpful. (Edited for clarity)
Brilliant quick craft, going to use your same method to make tops for my preserving jars to make them look pretty.thank you for showing how to do the elastic.bless you for sharing your wisdom.
i wish I would have found this video before I started making a cover using another pattern. Your steps are wonderful!! Thank you so much for this video.
I love these covers. I have a collection of sizes. I have the issue with people in my house not recovering the bowls if they don't find what they want inside. So to combat this, I cut a square space out of the center and added a patch of clear vinyl so they could see what is under the lid! lol Works out great.
Thanks so much for this series. I needed come co-worker gift ideas and these are wonderful. I will up at 6am central this morning looking for the last one. Thanks Again!!!!!
I have resisted making these covers, like to see what is in the bowl. So I modified with a piece of clear vinyl sewn into the middle of the cover to serve as a window, Zigzagged around the edges of the vinyl and cut away fabric with pinking shears. Thanks for the pattern and motivation.
I had 95% done on my own and I decided wait!!!! I should see who adds elastic on theirs vs. The bees wax version...and who came up first! VANESSA THE CRAFTY GEMINI...OF COURSE!!!! THANKS VANESSA! I ALWAYS KNOW I CAN COUNT ON YOU!!!
It’s 5 years since you made this video, and recently I was thinking I need to make some bowl covers because I am having trouble finding the right sizes for my bowls, especially not finding covers large enough for my biggest bowls.
The Queen of Stash....Ms Vanessa......great stocking stuffer project for anyone on one's list....who could'nt use BOWL COVERS....really!! You always amaze me with your videos....I very much look forward to them as they come out. Would like to THANKYOU so much for the 12 Gifts for 12 Days of DIY Last Minute Projects.....love the concept and enjoyed the journey. THANKS Vanessa for a 12 STAR CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE of a SEWING KIND!! GOD BLESS you and your family... MERRY CHRISTMAS to all...... GROUP HUG { HUGS } Ken Orlando, Fl., USA PS: I smiled when you mentioned about using a Larger BOWL COVER for the Milk Pail....super idea to keep stuff out on your way out to Ms Bossy for her morning deposit LOL. I was raised on a farm and milked by hand many cows...in upstate NY near Niagara Falls, Graduated from College up there and then moved to Fl nearly 50 yrs ago....and had a small farm here...my wife and sons loved the animals...the cow and chickens / goats / pigs...and huge garden.....we enjoyed the bounties of Mother Nature for a number of years. Your family will LOVE THIS as time goes on....I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. :)
Thanks for these videos. They’re so clear to follow. I’ve just made a bowl cover and it’s the first time I’ve ever sewed elastic. It’s not perfect but I’m inspired to make more (and this time I’ll sew the elastic on the side I want to be the underneath 😂). Next project, bowl cosy 👍
So sad to be watching this as a tutorial as a way to help me learn how to create covers to protect drinks for myself and my friends. There has been a massive increase in my area of people getting spiked at bars and clubs! This was really helpful tutorial thank you! Stay safe 👏❤️
I made several reusable bowl covers some months ago and were more difficult. I wish I had seen your video then. I used a thin laminated fabric, for easier cleaning instead of fabric
THANK YOU so much for this video! I made the perfect bowl cover for my KitchenAid mixer bowl. I don't have a cover for the entire mixer so the bowl cover is just what I needed. :-)
I’ve loved each & everyone of these videos! You make it so simple to understand. I will be making some of the soup bow holders for next year! I'll be sure & post some pictures! Thank you so much for all of these!
When you were done for whatever reason I thought oh that would be such a cute shower cap so now I'm thinking I need to figure this out not just for my bowls but to make a shower cap that's actually comfortable and cute

Great idea, thanks so much, I save everything as well🌻🌻🌻
I save my plastic too for project bags. Thanks for the tip.
These covers are fabulous and quick for gift giving. Great to use when proofing dough.
Thank you for making this! I am going to be making miniature versions for my friends to take to university to cover their glasses when they are out clubbing to try and keep them safe from being spiked!
Add a button hole on the tops so they can insert their straw.

Watched all of your 12 videos they are great. I will be making some of hem thanks
.
Oh thank you, I spent a hour trying to figure out how to do this. Your wonderful!
If you use laminate fabric on the liner it would be more airtight as well as resist stains.
Is laminated fabric washable?
@@sam250291 i am pretty sure the laminate fabric would have to be hand washed. and not completely airtight, but it would help a lot.
I need to make these for myself since the lids like to walk away.
Merry Christmas!
very cool!my mother in law would love this!
This is an awesome idea! So practical and not expensive at all. Thank you, Vanessa! 🥗🥗🥗
