UNREAL. This song always annoyed me in the original movie, but my jaw was on the floor when I watched this whole scene in theaters. Knew she was a star but this scene just confirmed how charismatic and charming and TALENTED she is!!! Bravo!

Marni Nixon who dubbed Maria was a very talented singer but being in the studio and intending to sing a song imitating the accent Natalie Wood (who was a good actress) was putting on maybe wasn't easy. Plus, they sung in a different style back then. However, I don't like the dubbing, it lacks something besides being obvious. While I vastly prefer the new movie, I actually find this scene in the original to be quite cute and enjoyable, even though obviously Rachel sounds better...so the whole charisma and stuff comment is a bit subjective. You know, the thing opinions are.

Don’t much care for this version. The accent is much too thick. Zegler can carry a tune but her rendition has no pizzazz behind it. Just lays there. Much too flat to be memorable. Can see why the remake of this classic masterpiece that Spielberg attempted failed so ignominiously.
Yeah, failed by maintaining 90+%s on Rotten Tomatoes (aka a critical smash), maintaining a high audience score, Being nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars...but yeah lower box office numbers bc we're in a pandemic and Marvel fans would rather see Spider Man. As we all know box office is the only measure of success. She has an accent that is there because Maria is foreign but how on God's green Earth is it too thick??? Her intonation is perfect, she has precise, delicate enunciation, it's super clear, even with an accent. She even lets out a belt. She can do far more than "carry a tune." How is Marni Nixon putting on a really thick accent while overly operatically rounding her vowels sound better than this??? You people just watch video-less clips on UA-cam, make things up about what you hear and then say, "I can see why..." Or "I'm not watching the new one." Don't talk on the new one unless you actually watched it. You can love your original and shut up.
