"I Feel Pretty" - West Side Story 1961/2021 Supercut

- One year ago this weekend, Rachel Zegler sang and danced her way into our hearts as Maria when "West Side Story" was cinematically brought into the 21st century. And to celebrate, here's a supercut of the 1961 (Robert Wise/Jerome Robbins) and 2021 (Steven Spielberg) versions of "I Feel Pretty," as performed by Natalie Wood (dubbed by Marni Nixon) in the '61 film and Zegler in the '21 film.

Both versions of "West Side Story" are masterpieces.
Indeed, and I wish they could be each appreciated as such rather than being weighed down by comparisons. I’ve reviewed theatre, I’ve seen a multitude of adaptations… why should ‘21 be treated any differently?

They're both stunning. My only criticism with the new West Side Story is that 'I Feel Pretty' should have come BEFORE the deaths of Riff and Bernardo, it was jarring to go from such a serious scene into IFP.
If I recall correctly, in the 1961 version, IFP is more in the middle and before the death.

We also had an ongoing pandemic. Not everyone was comfortable enough to go into a movie theater at the time (mostly older audiences).
considering Natalie didn't sing this...but rather lip-synced to it. They used someone else's voice, just as they did for her in Gypsy.
I believe Natalie did her own vocals in Gypsy. The role of Louise is much less vocally demand than the role of María.

Rachel’s Maria has the hope and the joy. Natalie’s Maria is telling her story to her friends and is enjoying the moment. Both brilliant performances. Props to Rachel and this being her film debut
Rachel's Maria is a Columbian-American cleaning lady (because...why?) and not Puerto Rican. Natalie's Maria is a Russian-American in "Brown Face," not Puerto Rican, lip-sycing, and works in a Bridal Shoppe. Both films are very flawed and perpetuate the negative view of their current entertainment climates. Hoping to see accurate representation in my lifetime. Culture/colours are not interchangeable. 😪

Marni Nixon’s voice is so pure and beautiful ; the best thing about the original movie.

35000 candidate for Maria´s role, but only one perfect: Rachel Zegler. The right looks, and a great singer already. She was something like twice better than the 2nd place girl in the castings.
The original had a funny little tap dance by Maria behind a screen - you could only see her feet - and I wish they'd found a way to keep that in the new one.
I remember that. I did like how they did that beach display at Gimbels in the new one to represent how "pretty and witty and bright" Maria's world is at that moment when there is a very dark world outside the store.

Natalie is beautiful but did not sing in the original movie, shame.
You can actually hear Natalie’s voice singing this song on UA-cam, recorded before she was dubbed. In this song she is not bad but she did not have the vocal strength for some of the other songs. Notwithstanding that she was wonderful in the part and she was luminous on the screen😊

Yes, Rachel is the prettier one. And about the Anatomy parameter, Natalie was more mature, was already a blossom woman, so she had better body. But Rachel was just 18 years old at that moment, she still has a lot of time to blossom.
Both are great talented women. Yet my preference as to who is pretty would be Maria from the original WSS. I prefer her voice, too.
