  • Storing ammo the right way, in the right place and in the right conditions can ensure many things:
    - Compliance with federal regulations
    - Reliability
    - Long shelf life and usability
If you're storing your ammunition in their original packaging in a room, ensure that the room is dry. A dehumidifier is a great way to do this for spaces larger than a safe or cabinet. The most economical and top reviewed option is listed below.
For smaller spaces, you've got a few options. Damprid is a great solution for safes and cabinets and requires nothing but time to absorb moisture. It's an economical option over packets of silica gel, too - if you have the space for it. Link below.
If you don't have as much space or you're storing your ammo long term (such as in a sealed ammo can) then using silica gel is great - and there are two awesome options. The first is just a toss-in and forget about it method using silica gel packets (linked below). They are one time use and once they absorb their volume in moisture they are replaced by a new packet.
For something yet more economical, use what I use not just for my firearms and ammo, but also my 3D printing setup. And that is colour changing reusable silica gel. This stuff is awesome because you only need to buy as much as you need once! When it absorbs all the moisture it can, it changes colours and all you need to do is put it in the microwave for a few minutes. At that point it's good as new and you can toss it into a tea bag (or a custom 3D printed option like I showed in the video) and put it into your ammo can to keep things nice and dry. Link below.

Great video CO! Anyone keep a fire extinguisher or fire blanket near their ammo; just in case?

Thank you! Wow this is actually a great idea! I have a fire blanket in a utility closet that I might consider keeping a little closer to the safe. Absolutely brilliant!

Great video. A few comments about magazine storage loaded vs un loaded and during transportation and at home would really help clarify more safety and possible misunderstood storage information.

One of the downsides to the mil ammo cans is the difficulty to physically lock them. You mention that it can be done but don't show how you manage it. I have one locked right now and that was achieved using a cable lock. A bit of a pain. I also have metal tool boxes (fairly inexpensive - nothing fancy) but they do have hasps on them to take a padlock. I realize we don't have to lock our ammo but, if locked, I feel better about everything being stored in the same location. I also store some in my gun lockers/safes. However, I do find that there comes a point when it starts getting in the way of my stored guns... and I sure as hell ain't getting rid of any guns to make room! You hear that Trudope? Goeetadik.

You’re right. I didn’t show it. But that’s because if you saw an ammo can, it would be obvious how to lock it. There’s almost always a specific hole drilled out for exactly that purpose. And it can be utilized with either a pad lock or combination lock, or a cable lock.
I would not recommend cable locks. For one, because they are made for firearms and are often too long for ammo cans. This would allow someone to open the can partially and have access to ammo.
Using a padlock or combo lock would ensure that the clearance is tight enough that the top can’t be opened and ammunition cannot be removed.
As far as storing ammo with firearms, that makes sense and as I mentioned is completely fine as long as you’re following other laws (like that the cabinet is locked). I only do this with my shotgun. But you could even go as far as throwing loaded mags in with your firearms as long as again, the container is locked and the magazines are not loaded in the firearms.

@@canadianoperator After 35 years in the army, I've handled my share of ammo cans. I don't think it's that obvious how to use a padlock on it. Before hitting 'send' I better dig one out and confirm first... 😁
Yep, I'm sitting here looking right at a 7.62 ammo can and there is no way to secure it with a pad lock. Perhaps you got your hands on some modified ones?
I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I think the service you are providing with your videos is a good one. Maybe a quick future video can show some tips on how to secure a milsurp ammo can.
Anyway, keep up the good work.

@@canadianoperator No need to thank me. I wasn't fishing for compliments. I'm just illustrating that I've handled a lot of ammo cans. But, even with that, I had to fetch one to confirm my suspicions that they are not easily locked. I look forward to seeing more of your content.

Non-restricted firearms are not required to be locked or made inoperable in Canada.

    • @canadianoperator
      @canadianoperator  2 місяці тому +1

Legally, you don’t need to lock your firearm when you’re transporting it, but you absolutely need to have it locked when you’re storing it. That being said, you should be locking your firearm when transporting it as an additional safety measure.
