I saw Ronnie Radke react to your reaction of Popular Monster. He gave you props.
Mark Knopfler is the singer and fine guitarist all wrapped up in one. He’s 74 and still kicking. I love Dire Straits.
I love his solo stuff, too. It’s a completely different style and vibe, but still so good! I own everything he has put out.
@@oyvindkleven1087 Same. Can't wait for his new album. 🎸
New album out next month :)
He writes, he sings, he produces and he is a virtuoso guitarist. Possibly our greatest living musician.
Knopfler is an amazing player but also just a great story teller.
Totally - the lyricism in Lions, Tunnel Of Love and more recently Basil always blows me away.
Mark is the master of the finger pick guitar style
Romeo and Juliet man. It'll change your life bro. Knopfler also wrote the soundtrack for The Princess Bride, one of the best movies of all time!
Oh really? I didn't know that and Princess Bride is my all time favorite movie. Thanks!
True that.
Yes to R & J. My suggestion too. In addition to The Princess Bride, he wrote the soundtrack to the less well known Local Hero - little bits of that appear in many live performances.
MONEY FOR NOTHING.
Best Guitar opening riff ever.
MTV used it for years.
But only the long one for a reaction... Sting is adorable in the beginning. And make it LOUD 😅!!
I’ve said that for YEARS and have never once heard anyone bro f that up when talking about guitar intros….
I love the fact that Mark Knopfler is one of the only guitarists that does NOT use a pick! Also would like to mention that not everybody cares that you pause, or how many times you do so, it is YOUR channel!! And I'm happy you rewind after every pause.
Would like to request you listen to Telegraph Road, by Dire Straits, Alchemy Tour video. I think you will enjoy it! It is from the same tour as the Sultans of Swing video you watched.
It's been said already, but I URGE you to listen to "Telegraph Road" - Alchemy Live version. Simply one of the greatest live performances ever.
My dad was always a huge Dire Straits fan, thanks to him I can recognize Knopfler playing guitar in my sleep, took my dad to see him in concert 15-16 years ago, it was an experience
Dire Straits is without a doubt one of greatest bands ever and Mark Knopfler, who by the way plays without a guitar pick, is one of the all time greats. I saw them live back in the eighties and the were all that I expected and absolutely phenomenal! After they broke up I saw him on tour as a member of Clapton's band and it was absolutely mind blowing as they played many of the Dire Straits songs also. Talk about watching two of the best ever guitarists at their finest!!! A concert I will NEVER forget!!!!
Polo, your reaction is understated, and it makes it enjoyable. I agree with you that Dire Straits is unique and has exceptional musicians.
Thanks for sharing!😊😊😊
Private Investigations from Dire Straits Live "On The Night" 1992 will also blow your mind. The drummer here is Pick Withers from 1979. The drummer from Sultans Of Swing Live alchemy is Terry Williams but both are incredible drummers. Anyway love your channel. Cheers all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸
Private Investigations should be next.
On the night “brothers in arms “!
I love his collaboration with James Taylor on Sailing to Philadelphia. He wrote it after reading a book about Mason and Dixon. It's a great song. Romeo and Juliette is also amazing.
Mark knopfler is a great songwriter and story teller. Also he is considered one of the Best guitarists of all time
They really are the sultans of swing! I loved their concert!
Do Telegraph Road, next. The instrumental at the end really showcases the bads talent. Epic stuff.
YESSSS, Telegraph Road is my favorite Dire Straits song. I have to go check out a video of them performing it live.
He handles and plays the guitar like it's part of him. Amazing!
My God, my generation was so spoiled! We didn't know how good we had it with bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Billy Idol, Dire Straits and so many more to name. I don't know if music like this will ever come back. We were so lucky to have real bands with powerful raw talent. Not just a singer with auto tune and back up dancers.
Billy Idol????
You might not of know, but the rest of us did!!!! Billy idol!!!😂😂😂😂
@@supaflydude666 No. I know exactly who Billy Idol was which is why I'm asking the question: Why?
Mark wrote the song “private dancer”, a monster hit for Tina Turner.
I did not know that, thank you!
Good observation about Mark, His vocals are always subdued but golden.
One of my favorite bands, guitar player and singer...
I love that you're just at the tip of the iceberg with Dire Straits! I've been a fan since 1978 and I haven't heard a bad song yet. One of my all-time favorites is 'Telegraph Road', which is a long song that is also a story about a road in Detroit. The song uses the road as a metaphor for the cycle of the life of the city. I've driven it many times, but apparently Mark was in the front of the tour bus and asked about the road... the rest was history. That song, like Brothers in Arms, is a bit slower but is an incredible piece of music.
when you decide to listen to Telegraph Road, make sure you do the video from Alchemy Tour. It was in this concert that they did Sultans of Swing. I have ordered the DVD of this entire concert and cant wait to see it.
Great song. Great reaction. You are great. Thank you.
My favourite DS song. It's definitely one for long drives.
for me its Van Morrison , Mark Knopfler, Bob dylan best musicians ever best writers too Mark is a superb song writer
Agree totally, the order switches depending who I'm listening to at the time
@@BRIDINC1972 😎
Mark's guitar style evolved a lot over the course of his career. This is him very young.
You need to do Dire Straits Telegraph Road alchemy live... one of the greatest ever live performances
Love seeing the smile on your face during this song. It’s the same look I’ve always had when I listen to it. Thank you Sir !
Seen them live on their last tour, sounded even better live.
If you haven't already heard "If This Is Goodbye" I think you might love it. Written by Mark in response to peoples' last messages of love from 911. Heartbreaking. Done by Dire Straits and also as a duet with Emmylou Harris - both different, both wonderful.
Great DS song: Romeo and Juliet!!!!!
Mark is a wonderful guitar player!!! 👌
Great musicians ! Great guitar, sliding twangy individual notes. I have a record where Mark Knophler plays guitar with Chet Atkins, another guitar master. I really like "Industrial Disease" by Dire Straits, sort of an "eco-satire".
Loving your reactions to Dire Straights, they have been in my soul for 40 plus years now. You have two more absolute BONKERS LEVEL EPIC tracks to go though. Telegraph Road and my all time favorite, Romeo and Juliet. Enjoy when you get to them :)
You listen to three notes played by MK and you know it's HIM, there's no doubt possibile: wonderful songwriter and super tasteful guitarist.
Check out 'Wild West End' from their first album. Beautiful song.
Most of Mark's radio tracks do leave you wanting more, some of the best outros ever. You really can't go wrong with anything he has done whether it's Dire Straits, The Notting Hillbillies, solo with his band, with Chet Atkins, Emmylou Harris, movie soundtracks or on any of his numerous collaborations. Just happy to have heard it all when it was new and been able to enjoy it since.
Hey Polo, Sue from Canada. Just thought you’d like to know Mark Knopfler is only 2 years older than me but I have been a Dire Straits fan since they came out in late 70’s. Brilliant guitarist.
You should check out their live video of “Money for Nothing”. You’d love it. Absolutely thrilled you love them.
❤️🇬🇧🎶
album: "Communiqué" (1979) you cant go wrong with this or any album really all quality stuff
Their first two albums were flawless
my favorite dire straits song ❤
Please do more Dire Straits, for example live performances of Telegraph Road, Tunnel of Love and Private Investigations I am sure you will like them.
Sultans of Swing from Alchemy is the performance you are thinking of, where the drummer's (Terry Williams) dad was in the audience. Pick Withers was the drummer on this song though.
Telegragh Road, Romeo and Juliet, and Our Shangri-La a live duet with Mark and Emmy Lou Harris. Wonderful all!
I'm so glad you're into it.
Bought my first Dire Straits album in 1979. Polo’s comments are spot on. A great band.
I can listen to DS anytime, any place. Their sound, style, groove and expertise are just as captivating as the first time I heard them. Making Movies is still my favorite DS album but I dig every single album they ever produced. MK is a genius and so diverse. Love your reactions.
I also hate how soon this song ends 😭it gets so good at the end. Listen to Down to the Waterline if you haven't already.
Lady Writer is not one of their popular songs, but I'm glad you did a reaction of it. It's a great song! Their songs do have a similar signature, but their sounds varies from album to album. Wait till you hear one of their later bangers. Like the Brother's In Arms.
Okay, now you need to check out the Alchemy performance of 'Telegraph Road', where every member of the band proves themselves to be brilliant; and 'Money For Nothing' from On The Night performance.
He is my all time favorite. He recently had Christie’s of London auction off 15 guitars to be used to help young artists
An absolute classic is Money for nothing but give Telegraph Road or Romeo and Juliet a listen.
I agree, you can listen right through their albums. A big favorite, especially when they played it live, was Romeo and Juliet. It's not short, & it's a real beatutiful song. Also, Brothers In Arms. Thank you. Eye surgery has set me back for a while, but when I can, will definitely subscribe. Peace & Love to you and all your followers.
Knopfler is just ridiculouly good
mark is one of the best guitarists ever
I absolutely love your channel! All my favorites from my youth. Your passion for music really is great.
What makes those solos even more amazing is Mark Knopfler doesn't use a pick. He's all fingers all the time.
I need you to know what this reaction means to me. You are reacting exactly how I did when I was 18 years old when I heard Dire Straits for the first time. Sultans of Swing was on the radio and I heard it and thought it was a cool sound so I went to the record store and bought their debut album. Like you feel, not a bad or even mediocre song on both sides! They came to Vancouver in I think 1980 and I saw them in concert with a buddy ho thought they were just 'ok'. Skip ahead to about 1984 or '85 and they came back in town for the Brothers in Arms tour. What a show, I mean, what a show! I got all their albums, this track is off their second album, Communique. Bluesy rock, just such a great sound. Every album, every song, awesome. I've grown with the band. Mark did two solo concerts here, one at Queen Elizabeth theatre where the acoustics are perfect. His guitar work is just so incredible, and the way his guitar answers his singing. When I watch you, I see me as a young kid listening to the tracks for the first time. It's the best Sunday morning music ever made. Chris. If I could pick a track, maybe 'Wild West End' off their first album, or a solo song 'Song for Sonny Liston' ... Just all of them. Chris
Mark Knopfler plays with touch and feel quite like no other. Sometimes it feels like he is just breathing on the strings.
this group is from another galaxy i grow up with them
Mark is a world class guitarist. One if the 🐐 s
Mark Knopfler is my favorite guitarist. I love 'em all (SRV, Gilmour, Hendrix, Van Halen, Vai, etc etc etc). But there is something about Mark's playing that is the number one game for me. Yes, do more Dire Straits, as well as solo Mark.
From the same album as sultans of swing. Making movies - with ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘roller girl’ is my favourite.
The next - brothers in arms was huge / mtv played kicks for free to death - also walk of life.
My request is Paul Brady - the island (animated version).
Brady was voted best songwriter in Ireland multiple times times - ahead of Van Morrison, Bono/edge and Phil Lynott. The island ❤️.
Love your eclectic choices.
Marxman/Sinead O’Connor / ship ahoy
Tommy Makem / broad majestic Shannon
Aswad / African children are some other tasty tunes.
Keep on keeping on
Band; Waking Ned Devine "movie sound track" Song; The Ballad of Ned Devine Song; The Parting Glass
I'm really enjoying your Dire Straits journey. Keep em comin'. 🤟😁
"Once Upon a Time In The West" same album strongly recommended ❤
Mark Knopfler did the score for The Princess Bride movie! Check it out! Beautiful!
once upon a time in the west is "fine listening" from dire straits...cheers
Best song from that album.
Knopfler sings with the guitar.
For longer version, with longer solos, seek a LIVE version!
You'll listen for a long time before you find one that is short on quality. He, and they, are wonderful.
Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist, I still have their "Making Movies" LP in my collection. You'll definitely like their song "Tunnel of Love". Another band from Britain.
You are funny. They did not come out of nowhere...you did. 😀😅
😂
Not out of nowhere British band from 70’s/80’s. Marks now in his 70’s and going strong although his music has mellowed over the years 👍
4:12 been a Pink Floyd fan since a teenager. Great stuff. Gilmore is awesome.
Considering it's a short song by Dire Straits standards, I've long felt it's the ideal song to introduce the band to a new listener. It's got all that makes Dire Straits legendary, fabulous lyrics, delightful guitar, solid as a rock Bass, Drums, and backing vocals, plus a short but unforgettable guitar outro solo
btw shame that every dire straits video cuts off Marks ending solo as many of their songs end with him soloing out it was crazy . in concert his songs go on for 8 min or more on average
I love this song
Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits are one of the best of the best You should give a listen to Brothers in Arms, the song. It's deep and hauntingly beautiful. It's A Hard song to forget. ✌️🤎🤘🥁
Their best songs are their deep cuts and lesser know singles and albums. All 6 albums, no filler, no skipped tracks. Mark has a very Lou Reed and Dylan style of writing and singing but with his own style of music. Whole band is awesome.
Grew up in Kenya and my dad used to play in his car when on road trips in the late 80. My friends always thought I had a weird taste in music but now I know I wasn’t a weirdo based on the comments I’m seeing here.Walk of Fame and Latest trick was one of my favorites.
If you haven't heard it yet, check out Mark Knopfler's brand new Guitar Heroes project. Over 50 amazing guitarists all on one incredible 10 minute track! And benefits charity. ❤
'Walk of Life' for a happy groove 👍
If you want his longest solo try dire straits - telegraph roads
The song was Sultans of Swing Alchemy Live...You covered it about 5 months ago... Drummer was Terry Williams
Yep and in the Lady Writer vid it's original member Pick Withers on the kit, Terry joined them later.
His voice reminds me of Bob Dylan
It's interesting as time went by his voice sounded less like Dylan and more like Mark Knopfler. An example is Lights of Taormina. 🎸🎸🎸
I've said this in a video I believe.
@@poloreacts27 Cool 👍
indeed and a few like that same as Tom petty too
I think the same thing every time I hear him - certain words and phrases, in this song "my fall from grace" gets me.
Oh and the solo on Sultans of Swing is worth a review.
Dire Straits has been one of my favorites since I first heard them in about 1978. I really like Pick Withers on drums and John Illsley on bass. And Knopfler is a virtuoso.... A Chet Atkins C.G.P. - certified guitar player....
I’m 59 and grew up with all their music. Still my favourite
My favorite Dire Straits song is always the last one I heard... they are fantastic!!!! I highly recommend Planet New Orleans from the Album On Every Street. It's different but with Mark's signature stamp.
Nice song! New to your channel getting into older rock etc great video
Brilliant video as always dude. New subscriber, but watched loads of your vids and think they're great
Jane's Addiction
If you want to learn more about Dire Straights and Mark Knopfler's signature riffs, I'd suggest Rick Beato "Did Dire Straits Create the Coolest Riff Ever? Yep" You Tube video.
Memorable track, always loved it.
Dire straits. What are my all-time favorites especially Lady Writer you're right there are np bad dire straits songs, check out why aye, Devil Baby, and Down To The Waterline to be further mesmerized. I mean the man is so casual with that guitar--like it's a part of him. Love the review 😺
Have you done "romeo and juliet" yet? That's a good one, in particular the live "alchemy" version. Also "tunnel of love" from the same album.
Check out Telegraph Road
👍👍Great performance. 🖖❤
Not many great guitar players finger pick, it’s much harder to do but it gives you a clearer more distinctive sound.
Mark's style is called finger-picking or finger style. He spent time perfecting with the country legend Chet Atkins who is also known for this style. As you said, you can recognize it is Mark playing. I also agree that this song is way too short. You feel he didn't get to finish it. 😅
