Metroid is my all-time favorite series & I cannot express how happy it makes me seeing new people trying it out & "getting" it. Really well done video & I love that you caught onto the subtle storytelling of Metroid II, it's very easy to miss! Very excited to see your Metroid journey continue!
Thank you so so much for watching! I always felt like Metroid was a series I would just click with, I don't know why I ever waited so long to give it a shot. But I'm so glad I did, and I'm glad others enjoyed the ride with me!
Stumbled upon your DKC retrospective and liked it so much that I had to check out your retrospective on one of my all time favorite franchises. Keep up the good work man!
As you're discovering, the SNES was a blessed era in gaming. It had just enough power to finally unlock the full potential of genre defining games. Re the Metroid 2 boss, you can freeze her at the end of one of her lunges right before she hits you. This puts her at ground level, and you can spam 30+ missiles into her by stunlocking her. That's how I beat her back in the day.
Yeah, never having an SNES really makes it clear how much I missed out on, and how much I still have to experience. As for the Queen boss, I realized I could do that, but by the time I could get her to that point in most fights I was so low on health that no matter how much I spammed I basically died the moment she unfroze 😔
A lot of people who have covered the Metroid series have the same Wikipedia style information dump that gets boring fast. I’m happy to say your take is very personal and adds a different perspective than most. I enjoyed this video so much, I went back and watched your other content. The effort you put into your videos shows and I’m sure other people will also start to notice. Best of luck on UA-cam. Subscribed.
Thank you so much for watching! I really wanted to make these videos feel like a personal journal through the games rather than just regurgitating review points lmao I hope you'll enjoy new videos in the future too!
Great video. Btw 1:05:06 the "Chozo contructs" are Zebesian Space Pirates, unrealated to the Chozo. Just for future referance :) The statue however is a machine made by the Chozo, called a Torizo.
Yeah I've been corrected on the chozo/space pirate comment a few times! I think I was too busy browning my shorts because of the one clambering over my head to ask them what they were lmao
Head Canon for Metroid II: SR-388 is dark, like pitch black. It's black and white because of Samus' Infrared Ray Scope. It's in the manual and says, "Allows Samus to see, even in the dark". Fusion kinda poo-poos that, but it worked back in the day.
@@kjadngynnesson6435 oh neat I actually didn’t know that part from the manual. That’s a pretty cool way to look at the original color palette actually! I like that head canon a lot!
Loved this review/analysis. I will say that you did nothing by going right first. It’s a subtle way to teach the player that exploring all avenues is encouraged!
That’s kinda how I looked at it too. Teaches the player that the way forward isn’t always the most direct which I really liked. Even if it definitely made me feel dumb hitting the wall at the end lmao. Thank you so much for watching!
Def fair consulting a map. Zelda 1 came with a map. And harder games like this were meant to be figured out by buying NIntendo Power, which knowledge would then be passed among friends.
That's kind of the mentality i went with and probably will going forward if I play something similar to this in the future. Knowing that certain designs were made to be intentionally difficult to keep the game longer, or to buy the strategy guide or whatever in order to get through it.
I think the intention behind the NES Zelda games - to get players talking about and sharing their in-game findings - that is often cited in reviews of at least the first game can apply to "Metroid" as well. As a kid, I had an acquaintance with whom I tried to get ahead in "Metroid" over a few weeks. Lacking other friends who'd played this game, we couldn't get anywhere far into the game world, neither of us were creative enough to just bomb every floor tile and shoot every wall and ceiling tile. I don't think I would ever have found my way to Ridley without a map.
@@HerrHaque Yea I or anyone I knew didn't get anywhere in Metroid. It was still cool to play for a few but we didn't know what the hell to do. I just beat it with a guide a few years ago.
Super Metroid has remained in my "Top-5 List" for nearly 30 years. It was a sincere honor to be able to experience this work of art while it was still selling for $50 to $60 in every toy-store across America. The franchise has had some highs and lows. Super Metroid however, remains a nearly perfect example of organic storytelling through pristine world-building...
Super metroid: while holding a charge (on the charge beam), you can spin jump and you won't take damage from the phantom "ring attack", too bad the game doesn't tell you this.
As a late GenXer - I am actually really happy to see the newer generation play these classic and timeless games. Say what you will about these insane budget AAA games but everyone always makes there way back to Super Metroid or Mario 3 etc. @Guardison you have a great style with discussing your experience and throwing in good wips which make you very entertaining to listen to. Keep up the good work man
Listen I'm not immune to a AAA game here and there but it's nice to go back to games like this that are just...fun. Feels like a full package, it's been a great time overall. Thank you so much for watching!
In Super Metroid you don't have to keep pressing select for sub weapons, the item cancel button. In your example with going from super missiles to regular, press item cancel then select. 2 button presses instead of 5.
Yeah I've been corrected on a few times! Definitely the biggest thing I made a mistake on in the video, but thankfully it's something that just makes me enjoy the game that much more! My fault for trying to go into the game blind and not experimenting too much with the controls, but then again I didn't know I could sprint until I absolutely HAD to before the plant boss lmao.
@@Guardison While the item cancel button is great, it's still not as good as the Zero Mission/Fusion system of press select to change sub-weapon, hold right trigger to switch from beam to sub-weapon.
Another excellent never played video. Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time and its always a pleasure to see someone still be able to appreciate it after all these years. Whenever you get around to it, would recommend playing Metroid Fusion and AM2R before finishing off the mainline series with Dread.
There was a big gap between me writing the script and recording it, so the fish jism line caught me off guard as much as it did you lmao Thank you so much for watching Widd it means a ton ♥
24:59 I remember watching my cousin try to get through this section when I was a baby! Those things scared the *_shit_* out of me! I was so traumatized that when Super Metroid came out, and I played it for the first time, I was instantly reminded of its predecessor, and those fears came right back! But somehow, I wasn't as scared. I managed to push through my fears until I got stuck in norfair, because I didn't know anything about the ice beam, let alone where it is. And that's how my first playthrough ended. But just like somecallmeJohnny, This game was my gateway drug back into the series, And it made me a bona fide fan for life. I even went back to the original game as a teenager, and I tore that game to shreds!
The last Metroid was an awesome game. The Galaxy is still waiting for Prime 4 tho. ... I should probably also mention that this is like my top 4 gaming franchise and that I am *very* excited to see you experience the classics, keep up the great content
Yeah, Dread and Prime Remastered coming out really made me want to try the franchise finally. Haven't played those yet either, but I'm already looking forward to playing more Metroid. Prime 4 never though it's just...it's not real.
@@Guardison I mean, in realistic terms, we're not unlikely to get some news once Nintendo reveals whatever their next generation's gonna be. In Metroid terms? 2037 year of the bounty hunter babyyyyyyy
I just stumbled across this as a recommended video, and as a Metroid fan this was cool to see as opposed to a retrospective. If you’re still taking requests, I’m a huge fan of the classic final fantasy games. I know they are a time sync as RPGs, but the pixel remasters on switch and PS4 do have boosts (xp and money multipliers, turning off encounters). You should give them a try. Edit: If RPGs are too daunting, try the Mega Man games.
I'd absolutely love to do the final fantasy games eventually, but it's definitely a time commitment to get through them in a reasonable time! I'm sure I could split them up into single videos, maybe I'll see how much I have to say after playing the first one sooner or later. Mega Man's definitely on the short list of games for videos though, don't worry!
One thing you might whant to check out is super metroid redux which changes some of the controls to be better and a few other thing if you whant you could even get it in widescreen.
I've been recommended a few different romhacks and mods so far yeah, I'll add it to the list! I usually try to play as original of a version of these games as I can to get a feel for it (Metroid 2 as an exception so my eyes didn't burn out looking at the gameboy color palette lmao).
Metroid has always been my favorite series since I was a preteen. Personally I use the bomb strategy for Kraid/Ridley in NEStroid since it gives so much s, it's slower than just spamming missiles but makes doing lower percent runs easier.
1:09:00 yeah. draygon's a nightmare to kill unless you use that grapple method on her. 1:12:00 you can press the X button to cancel the current subweapon selected. but you do have to start back at missiles again.
Thank you so much for watching! I tried using the bomb method before just spamming missiles but I couldn't get the set up right, but thankfully just force feeding the ordinance worked just fine. As for the cancel subweapon button yeah, I've had a few people correct me! I'm glad it's in the game at the very least, makes going back to Super sound even more fun a second time around knowing that
Everyone always says "I don't WANT to draw my own map", but has anyone actually tried it? I hadn't for a while, but then I decided to just for fun when playing the second quest in Zelda and... it really wasn't a big deal at all. It barely slowed down the pace, and the benefits far outweighed the... well, nonexistent negatives. I then tried it again with Metroid, and sure, I've played through the game before so I know where all the secrets are, but I still found myself appreciating the world in a whole new way after drawing out the layout of Zebes myself. It made it incredibly obvious where the infamous Norfair tile is since, as long as you've looked at the manual and know the entrance to Ridley's lair is further below, there's actually only two spots in the area that the path can be. It also made me finally understand the logic of the repeating rooms in Kraid's lair. The place is essentially just three shafts with the repeat rooms all stacked on top of each other in between them. Anyway, this isn't some sort of criticism towards you or anything. I've just found it interesting how many people say they refuse to do this despite seemingly never even giving it a shot.
I tried it a bit when doing the Zelda video! (Wink wink plug plug) Admittedly while part of it came down to simply being to save time, another part of it felt like I wouldn't be able to properly convey some of the deeper aspects of the world. In theory it sounded fun and I really wanted to give it a shot, believe me I did, but when attempting to actually do it, it felt like I was going to spend time on something that would only end up making me more frustrated. Still thank you for watching!
This video just ticks every box for what I like to watch on UA-cam. I'm glad I was recommended this! Given your views on space, I'm wondering what you'd make of the Halo games.
I've played a few of the Halo games, mainly 3, ODST, and Reach. I'd love to go back through those eventually too, we'll have to see when and where I can fit all of those in! But thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you all so so much for watching! This video took forever to make due to a lot of real life circumstances between being sick, traveling, and any number of other factors. The next video should hopefully be out much faster provided I don't catch anything that knocks me out for a month again. Happy late Holidays and have a great New Years!
Following up on the "More comments for the Metroid 2 and 3 sections", your dive into SR-388 was enthralling. Thank you for giving Metroid 2 some justice in the online review scene.
Metroid 2 was a really fun time, I didn't expect to enjoy it nearly as much as I did! I'm glad I could give it a little bit of justice, I think more people should give it a chance.
I really enjoy your videos very much. Really is interesting hearing your point of view on these classic games with a fresh perspective, you having not played previously!
Thank you so much for watching! I always worry if it matters that it's my first time playing through them, but I think it adds to how I feel about the games. Trying to make it feel like I'm bringing someone along through my first time playing instead of just revisiting and reviewing something I already know.
It’s definitely on the short list of games I wanna play soon! I think the prime games might be the next games I touch from Metroid first though, we’ll see!
"Chozo Artifact Temple - Main Theme" from Prime 1! (Remastered specifically but I don't know if they changed the music) Next video I'll probably have a little pop up in the corner when the music changes tracks so people know what song it is.
@@Guardison artifact temple plays a little later in the vid, I mean the music that plays from 1:07:20-1:10:20 great video btw. if you want more great metroid games to play in the future you can't go wrong with prime.
@@Madsquid994 Ah sorry! That section is the "Gandrayda Boss Theme" from Prime 3! Thank you so much for watching! Prime is probably the next games in the Metroid Series I'd play next, though don't quote me on that 100% lmao.
If you want the aesthetic of Metroid 1 with some quality of life improvements, there's a fan game called Metroid Planets with a full remake of the original game :D
the main complaint about super being the ammo selection, isn't as bad as you thought as there is a button (I forgot what it is by default as I always set it to select, but I think its like x or y or something) that sets you back to your standard beam, so instead of pressing 5 buttons to go from supers to regular missiles, you only need to press 2
Yeah I've had a couple of people correct me on it and I'm really glad that's the case! Easy to miss, but largely my fault for not checking the controls before starting the game. Don't tell anyone but I also didn't know I could sprint until I absolutely had to before the plant boss. 😔
I think Metroid 1 being as good as it is, is a miracle. None of the group that made it had made a game before, and they only had 10 months between getting the green light and the game being released. 10 months was a lot of time back then, but still.
Honestly that kinda makes sense with how the game feels overall. It's still a fun game but telling me it was an inexperienced group's first attempt makes things a lot more clear.
I remember going and buying the original Metroid when it came out at the time the game was the game me and my friends I wanted that kid. Icarus those two came out at same time I love playing both of those
I've yet to give Kid Icarus a shot just yet, it's one of those games I've heard mixed things about. Either it's ball-bustingly hard or it's really easy if you play the game the "right" way. Still, very glad I ended up giving Metroid a shot finally!
"Metroid shoots very well w her arm and can roll in a ball like sonic"... Yes. That Metroid... Did you know Zelda uses a weapon called the master sword?
Your one of my favorite newer youtubers! These videos provide a really nice fresh perspective on older games, and it's been a joy to watch and follow! I got into the metroid games myself recently and they're truly special and has gotten me deep into a whole new genre. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much! It means a lot to hear that, I’m glad the videos are making the right impression! I always thought Metroid looked amazing and I’m glad my feeling was right, I was so worried about being disappointed by them somehow.
Metroid 2 also has a remake; it's called Samus Returns for the 3ds, and laid down alot of the foundation for Dread. I'd recommend checking it out if you felt like it
Yeah, I know about Samus Returns and AM2R, but I didn't want to play them for this video like I did for Zero Mission. Felt like I would just taint my perception of the games again, so I figured I'd give it some time first!
@@darkhorse744 We'll see! Obviously I don't wanna do too much metroid back to back, I think if I were to do another Metroid video soon I might look into the Prime games first. But I'm still going to cover like ZM, Fusion, Dread, and maybe Returns eventually!
@@Guardison Nice! That's definitely something to look forward to. Also, great vid as always! It's always a better day when a new vid from you pops up in my subscription feed.
1:09:05 to be fair, that method was actually a secret. But nowadays, everybody and their mama knows. I wish I could say the same for the continue code in the original Super Mario Bros on NES. I thought everybody knew about that
16:24 there IS a map. its in the manual. its right there. "but who reads the manual lol!" well you should because its a part of the game; the game came with the menual and youre expected to read it because they couldnt fit that kind of information in-game yet because of how limiting the NES was. in fact, even the doors you mentioned are explained in the manual. so anyway the map given to you isnt the one youd find online where it gives you locations of all the powerups and secrets, but just gives you a general idea of where you might be if you keep track of which rooms you went through
Good to know! I’ll have to shop around and see if I can find a good scan or in tact copy of the manual! Sounds like exactly what I was kind of looking for!
Hello sir, Metroid fan here. It's my first time on your page, I loved the video. It feels like you really try to judge the games for what they are in the context of their release and your take on Metroid is refreshing. You focus on the good stuff without omitting the bad and it never feels like you're complaining, just very matter of fact about it. Subscribed!
Thank you so much for watching and I'm so glad you enjoyed! I'm still really proud of how this video turned out and I'm glad people found the format fun and interesting!
"Prime 4 is just a collective brain aneurysm at this point" im here in July of 2024, we got fucken GAMEPLAY of it last month, it's comin next year, WOOOOOOOOOOO
I think that's one of the things I try to savor with this and maybe try to give back to people watching, seeing someone discover and experience certain aspects of the game for the first time. I know it's not the same as watching someone's unfiltered gameplay, but I hope people still enjoy it nonetheless!
@@Guardison I enjoyed the video very much. I played a lot of the aforementioned games when they were released and as a kid, reading about SM and Link to the Past in Nintendo Power we were so hyped. The little bits of information we would get for these games built so much suspense. We couldn’t go and watch endless teasers on here. We just had to trust that it was going to be great. And they were. Thank you for restoring the feeling 🙏🏻
i really do wonder why they didnt make it so you could switch out beams in the first 2 games, in zelda you could switch weapons in the first game and in LA on the gameboy too. did they not have enough space on the cartridge? time to make the game? is it because the first game is built on duct tape and then the sequel tried to keep the way the beams work the same?
Someone in the comments here told me recently that Metroid 1 was made pretty quickly, and largely with a dev team that hadn't made a game before, so I have to assume it was just an oversight sort of thing. I'm at least grateful they left an ice beam before you had to tackle the metroid larva at the end in Metroid 2 thankfully, I would NOT have remembered where the original ice beam was.
Huh, I thought I listened to it for a while and never heard it shift! I guess I just had to listen for a bit longer than I did, because I swore I went for like 30 seconds in the recording....
i love Metroid 2. thank you for giving it so much time. that whole section of the video made me so happy. it is easily my fav metroid game and the constant hate i see for it online pains me. both remakes are good games, but they don't capture the feel of the original. it's very unique.
@@alicevioleta3184 it was an amazing time! It was exactly what I was expecting Metroid to feel like so I’m glad it met and exceeded my expectations! I’d still like to try the remakes one of these days though, just to see all the differences in design decisions. Thank you so much for watching!
Just got done with the Metroid(NES) portion, and I would recommend watching the Geek Critique's Metroid retrospective (Redux), he gives a lot of the historical context, and it might MAYBE help a tiny bit with some of the negative feelings creeping in near the end of the playthrough. and be an interesting watch (Hopefully). Honestly, I'm commenting because comments are good for the, what is it, interaction numbers or whatever? and I may end up throwing down a comment for Metroid 2 and Super Metroid as well (maybe, pending my social anxiety).
Hey thank you so so much for replying at all! If you don't wanna reply more, don't even worry about it, any reply is good enough for me! And yeah I've seen a lot of videos recommended to me while in the process of making this one, but I had to hold off on it so I didn't taint my own first time opinion too much on it. A lot of the research I did on Metroid 1 and 2 didn't end up making it into the video because I already was rambling on a ton about the game itself, but I'd be super curious to see more opinions!
Yeah content wise Federation Force seems like it's a totally fine game, just easy low hanging fruit since I knew the fanbase didn't quite like it when it came out lmao
1:12:46 there is actually a way to quickly switch back to a normal beam without pressing select like 5 times On a basic controller setting it is a Y button, it is called “item cancel” in controller settings, and well, it pretty much does what it sais Very useful, if I need to switch from super missal to a normal one, just cancel your item and press select ones Or to quickly switch back to normal beam from missals Good stuff! Hope this is helpful, and that there won’t be a phrase later down the video like: “And then I found out that you can just press one button!” Haha 😅
Yeah unfortunately I didn't have the same revelation about item cancel as I did about space jump haha. My friend told me after the video came out that I completely missed it so now I'm wrong on the internet, the most horrible thing anyone can be... 😔 Thank you so much for watching!
I recently discovered a fanmade reimagining of NES Metroid called Metroid Planets that I thought was really fun. It adds a proper map screen and save system to the game, it rebalances item drops from enemies so they drop heals and missiles at a rate that's reasonable, it allows you to respawn with full health, it fixes pretty much all of the jank from NES Metroid without removing its charm (no more getting hit in room transitions, smoother character control, no more slowdown, etc.). It even adds multiplayer and a randomizer to the game. So if you want a more enjoyable way to revisit that game without playing Zero Mission, I think that's probably your best option?
That's not a bad suggestion, I might have to take a look into it! I was noticing that item drops were feast or famine with a lot of enemies and I wasn't sure if it was a fixed thing or not. It wasn't so much that it was terrible but you'll definitely notice a lot of clips where I have like, no health lmao
Not sure if anyone mentioned this for Metroid 2, but you can use the morph ball to enter the Queen and do "massive damage" with a bomb. Sorry if this has already been stated. Good video!
I actually figured that out yeah! It was really the only way I ended up beating her without wanting to rip my hair out lmao They really made a lot of enemies super damage spongy when it comes to missiles! Still, it's really cool that they had alternate methods!
Just wanted to say, there are only two 'Chozo constructs' in Super Metroid: The one boss you fight early on and the golden version much later in Norfair. The other enemies you called constructs are in fact living space pirates.
Yeah I’ve had it pointed out to me at this point now, I guess it was just the way they moved and how they looked at first glance haha Kind of a shame they didn’t have an enemy name scroll like in some other Nintendo games but I guess I understand. Would definitely help when a lot of the enemies are so alien.
just wanna say, there is an input for resetting your item selection in super metroid so you only ever need to select up to the one weapon you want to use. the default button mapping for the game is kinda trash, but luckily they let you actually reconfigure it so i always set weapon select onto one of the face buttons and weapon reset on the select button you can also make it so that you only use a weapon once and then it resets itself by holding weapon reset and then selecting the one you want, but i myself havent found much of a use for it during casual play
Yeah I had a friend message me after I put out the video that there was a button to reset the item selection. Unfortunately now I'm going to look incorrect AND cringe in front of everyone.... But thank you so much for watching! I noticed that the config was really weird when I first started the game but I thought it was just my emulator inputs.
don't be embarrassed fo going right first since. at the time, all games were exactly that, that why Metroid was a huge thing, you could back track and the game was design exactly like that. Me, back in those days (i'm old) I did went left first because all game went right, i went in knowing you could back track.
Yeah, I think it's more funny than anything. Hitting that wall and then immediately going back and seeing how close an upgrade was just in the open like that. It's definitely good game design, letting you explore at your pace and understanding there's multiple paths forward! Thank you so much for watching!
While I dislike the fact that the first game copies and pastes layouts for many rooms in this game, I never found it quite that easy to get lost, personally. God blessed me with an awesome sense of direction. Plus, I love to explore and figure things out on my own, and I love when games allow me to do that without holding my hand.
AM2R is my favorite 2D Metroid(Dread is a close 2nd). I run like 20 randomizers or ROM hacks a month. Only other series that comes close is Metal Gear(pain). I love F-zero and also refuse to play 99 for my own sake lmao. Hope you continue to enjoy more games you've yet to play.
1:13:10 I have two friends who are colorblind, so I understand how this can be a problem, but for the rest of us, those two doors are not close in color at all. The Power bomb doors are yellow, and the super missile doors are green.
@@Guardison Oh hey I also had something else to tell you.... if you press X, it resets your selected item back to nothing, so to get from supers to normal, you only have to press X and then select instead of cycling around.
super stoked to watch this. Actually just finished replaying super metroid recently. Not familiar with the others but damn do I love super metroid. Might check out the others as well. I'll comment more thoughts once I watch the vid :)
A friend of mine said it was their favorite/the best in the whole series too and just from what I played, I can't disagree yet. It was really damn good.
As a kid, I loved Metroid 1. And Super Metroid was amazing. that said, one thing I hate about the original Metroid game was that there's one spot needed to progress which requires infinate bomb jumping. And that technique is so inconsistent and finicky that you practically needed a Turbo controller.
I got a little better at bomb jumping the more that I played but it's definitely not a skill that was ever really built up. That's kind of the problem with Metroid 1 overall is that there's a lot of things it expects you to know/do, without properly giving you the tools to learn/discover it. Not saying it needs to hold your hand of course, but thankfully the series would get much better at giving the player the tools they need to discover on their own.
I genuinely think Super Metroid is the best video game ever made. Not as some flawless unimpeachable perfect experience, but in terms of how advanced it was in the context of the times. Symphony of the Night is a better sequel to Super Metroid than any of the later Metroid sequels are. Can't wait till you get there.
I can’t say I blame anyone for taking that stance. I was blown away by how much I enjoyed it, I genuinely couldn’t put that game down. I’m looking forward to the Castlevania series too! But we’ll have to cross that bridge after some…initial research lmao Thank you for watching!
11:00 you went the wrong way, but developers we're counting on this at the time of release: for people to believe they only need to go right. That's no skill issue, that's good game design :)
Metroid 1 needed map a badly, or not to have so many rooms be copy pasted versions of each other. It's hard to explore and make mental notes when everything keeps repeating.
It’s like I want to explore the planet naturally but with so much reuse the way they do it in Metroid 1 I was just running in circles trying to find a tiny, hidden path forward.
@@Guardison Props for beating it, I never have, every great once and a while I feel like giving it the ol college try, but after a few hours, I just lose interest. Not only are so many places copy/ pasted, there are random spots you have to bomb through with no indication of any kind to make you try bombing it, other than simply bombing every square inch of the world hoping to find something. That's just tedious.
I love how a lot of the designs of "space pirates" are just like, small little porcupine slug or random creatures that seem like planetary fauna. Honestly peak character design.
@@Guardison Actually, you're right about the weird little creatures being fauna. The only Space Pirates are the humanoid-lobster creatures that you see climbing on walls and shit near the end of the game. All the other enemies were native to different planets but were accidentally brought with the pirates throughout the galaxy and became invasive species on the new planets they landed on causing them to multiply rapidly. That actually becomes a major plot point further into the series with the X parasite, but you won't need to worry about that until Fusion and Dread, lol.

Now, randomize all the item locations in Super Metroid, combine it with Link to the Past, and do it all again! (it is wild what romhackers can do)
I love watching randomizer runs but those combination ones make my brain snap in half.
@@GuardisonThat's why you get a tracker to go with it.
Love doing that! Can't wait for this combo randomizer to be able to swap rooms, bosses, and enemies!
Love doing this as well as the SM Map Rando.
now try the quad rando. metroid 1, zelda 1, super metroid and aa link to the past all randomized together
"I am really on SR-388 right now killing all these metroids with Samus and you cannot prove that I'm not."
**A Wild Green Screen Appears**
I hate it when that thing shows up, never respects my privacy....
Great video. Btw 1:05:06 the "Chozo contructs" are Zebesian Space Pirates, unrealated to the Chozo. Just for future referance :)
The statue however is a machine made by the Chozo, called a Torizo.
That makes some sense, I was just trying to quick snipe them with fast shots but I guess the charge might have helped more!
The Metroid 2 title screen makes me have to pee after three minutes
It really is just a sleeper cell activation noise.
Subbed because you used the word viscera in a sentence. Also, great editing. Keep em coming.
I do love me some viscera. Thank you so much for watching!
This is the first vid ive watched on you tube with the words "fish jism" . Great vid man, enjoyed the adventrue
There was a big gap between me writing the script and recording it, so the fish jism line caught me off guard as much as it did you lmao
Thank you so much for watching Widd it means a ton ♥
Ohhhhh this is channel seems relatively new....nice video.
Thank you so much for watching! Still getting my feet on the ground but I hope you enjoy what I've got on offer!
Metroid has always been one of my favorite series, glad to see ya back!
Thank you for watching! Video took way too long to get out but I hope I can do the franchise proud!
Just finished watching, and yeah awesome job! I can't wait to hear your takes on some of the other games in the series
@@feuerjustcomments I'm gonna be right there in the trenches waiting for my crumbs just like everyone else now, I did this to myself.
Mega Man's definitely on the short list of games for videos though, don't worry!
underrated channel, keep this up please... this video format is more addictive than meth
Don’t you worry I’m still cooking something up, should be done soon.
It’s even Blue variety :)
One thing you might whant to check out is super metroid redux which changes some of the controls to be better and a few other thing if you whant you could even get it in widescreen.
I've been recommended a few different romhacks and mods so far yeah, I'll add it to the list! I usually try to play as original of a version of these games as I can to get a feel for it (Metroid 2 as an exception so my eyes didn't burn out looking at the gameboy color palette lmao).
while i was never too deep into the metroid games and lore, this video kind of makes me want to give the series another chance
thank you
@@N3Selina you should! They’re probably my favorite games I’ve played for the channel so far, can’t recommend them enough!
@@Guardison thank you~
Metroid has always been my favorite series since I was a preteen. Personally I use the bomb strategy for Kraid/Ridley in NEStroid since it gives so much s, it's slower than just spamming missiles but makes doing lower percent runs easier.
1:09:00
yeah. draygon's a nightmare to kill unless you use that grapple method on her.
(Wink wink plug plug)
Admittedly while part of it came down to simply being to save time, another part of it felt like I wouldn't be able to properly convey some of the deeper aspects of the world.
In theory it sounded fun and I really wanted to give it a shot, believe me I did, but when attempting to actually do it, it felt like I was going to spend time on something that would only end up making me more frustrated.
Still thank you for watching!
Great video! You just earned your 1000th subscriber
Thank you so much, even if I missed the screen shot of the 1000 by 1 lmao

Just found this channel, immediately in fucking love with the content. Thank you

5:01 - If you’d like a Metroid with survival-horror elements, I’d highly recommend Metroid Fusion and/or Metroid Dread.
It’s definitely on the short list of games I wanna play soon! I think the prime games might be the next games I touch from Metroid first though, we’ll see!
what is the music that's being played while he's talking about draygon? sounds like the metroid prime synths but i don't recognise it
"Chozo Artifact Temple - Main Theme" from Prime 1! (Remastered specifically but I don't know if they changed the music)

If you want the aesthetic of Metroid 1 with some quality of life improvements, there's a fan game called Metroid Planets with a full remake of the original game :D
Yeah! I've been recommended Planets once or twice after the video came out, I've gotta look into it a bit! I've heard really good things!
I definitely recommend using the item cancel button next time you play Super Metroid!
Yeah! Knowing about it now will definitely save a ton of pain next time. Unfortunately I have to look wrong and, worst of all, cringe......
the main complaint about super being the ammo selection, isn't as bad as you thought as there is a button (I forgot what it is by default as I always set it to select, but I think its like x or y or something) that sets you back to your standard beam, so instead of pressing 5 buttons to go from supers to regular missiles, you only need to press 2
Aw shit no way I gotta look into this guy he sounds sick

Thank you so much! It means a lot to hear that, I’m glad the videos are making the right impression!
I always thought Metroid looked amazing and I’m glad my feeling was right, I was so worried about being disappointed by them somehow.
Metroid 2 also has a remake; it's called Samus Returns for the 3ds, and laid down alot of the foundation for Dread. I'd recommend checking it out if you felt like it
He literally mentions using the OST for Samus Returns in the video so I'm not sure why you thought he wouldn't be aware of it.
Yeah, I know about Samus Returns and AM2R, but I didn't want to play them for this video like I did for Zero Mission. Felt like I would just taint my perception of the games again, so I figured I'd give it some time first!
@@Guardison Nice!
Do you plan on covering the remakes somewhere down the line?
@@darkhorse744 We'll see! Obviously I don't wanna do too much metroid back to back, I think if I were to do another Metroid video soon I might look into the Prime games first.

Ridley is the easiest fight in Metroid as long as you have wave beam. Just stand in the lava and shoot up at him.
Even better, if you have the ice beam, you can freeze every fireball he throws at you, leaving him wide open
Just wait till this guy finds out about the ocean and all the unknowns about that
Psh what's the worst that could be down there it's just water 😎

@@Guardison I enjoyed the video very much. I played a lot of the aforementioned games when they were released and as a kid, reading about SM and Link to the Past in Nintendo Power we were so hyped. Thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed! I'm looking forward to making more!
Now, Go check out Metroid 4: Fusion on GBA!
Oh believe me that's on the to-do list, I'm already itching for more Metroid.
i really do wonder why they didnt make it so you could switch out beams in the first 2 games, in zelda you could switch weapons in the first game and in LA on the gameboy too. did they not have enough space on the cartridge? time to make the game? is it because the first game is built on duct tape and then the sequel tried to keep the way the beams work the same?
Someone in the comments here told me recently that Metroid 1 was made pretty quickly, and largely with a dev team that hadn't made a game before, so I have to assume it was just an oversight sort of thing.
I'm at least grateful they left an ice beam before you had to tackle the metroid larva at the end in Metroid 2 thankfully, I would NOT have remembered where the original ice beam was.
Niche?? My man.. My mills… My boy …. Metroid is nothing short of legendary
Oh believe me I've no intent on tarnishing the legend of the series in the slightest. I'm a believer now.
Well you probably know this, but the "release order" is the best way to play.
Yeah, that's kinda why I regretted playing Zero Mission early, even if it was for research. I'll definitely keep that in mind going forward.
Have you played Metal Gear? I recommend that be your next franchise to cover next, if you haven’t.
I haven't yet no, but it's definitely on a list of series I wanna look at soon!
The "Chozo constructs" that appear when you go back upstairs are not Chozo at all. Those are actually Space Pirates
Yeah I've been told a few times they're space pirates. Unfortunately I didn't have time to ask them while someone else shit my pants.

i love Metroid 2. thank you for giving it so much time. that whole section of the video made me so happy.
it is easily my fav metroid game and the constant hate i see for it online pains me. both remakes are good games, but they don't capture the feel of the original. it's very unique.
@@alicevioleta3184 it was an amazing time! It was exactly what I was expecting Metroid to feel like so I’m glad it met and exceeded my expectations!

55:28 No, the Metroid Queen is dead on SR388, the Space Pirates made Mother Brain's new body.
That makes the most sense, I understand that, I just like to imagine mother brain piloting the corpse like a meat-mech.
Oh man, federation force is absolutely underrated, not a metroidvania, but a great game especially with other player(s).
Yeah content wise Federation Force seems like it's a totally fine game, just easy low hanging fruit since I knew the fanbase didn't quite like it when it came out lmao
1:12:46 there is actually a way to quickly switch back to a normal beam without pressing select like 5 times
On a basic controller setting it is a Y button, it is called “item cancel” in controller settings, and well, it pretty much does what it sais
Very useful, if I need to switch from super missal to a normal one, just cancel your item and press select ones
Or to quickly switch back to normal beam from missals
Good stuff!
😔
Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for producing good video!!!
Link is not an elf. That's Little Mac.
It's okay they can both share, I'm sure I've seen fan fiction of that somewhere.
It wasn't so much that it was terrible but you'll definitely notice a lot of clips where I have like, no health lmao
thank you for presentiong metroid 2 the way i remember it from back in the day
@@doofus9007 thank you so much for watching, I’m glad I could do it justice!
Yeah I’ve had it pointed out to me at this point now, I guess it was just the way they moved and how they looked at first glance haha
Kind of a shame they didn’t have an enemy name scroll like in some other Nintendo games but I guess I understand. Would definitely help when a lot of the enemies are so alien.
just wanna say, there is an input for resetting your item selection in super metroid so you only ever need to select up to the one weapon you want to use. the default button mapping for the game is kinda trash, but luckily they let you actually reconfigure it so i always set weapon select onto one of the face buttons and weapon reset on the select button
you can also make it so that you only use a weapon once and then it resets itself by holding weapon reset and then selecting the one you want, but i myself havent found much of a use for it during casual play
O how I could forget. Dip your toes in the MegaMan series, from 1 to X, you'll find MANY things to enjoy.
I REALLY wanna dip my toes into the series next year I just have to figure out how I'm gonna split it up, because jesus there's so many entries.
@@Guardison make one video from 1 to 5 and other from 6 to x, simple
1:13:10 I have two friends who are colorblind, so I understand how this can be a problem, but for the rest of us, those two doors are not close in color at all. The Power bomb doors are yellow, and the super missile doors are green.
A belated Christmas gift!
Late, but not unwelcome! Just the gift that got lost in the closet for a few days.
Who’s gonna tell him the things that appear in super after you get the missiles are space pirates….
That also appear constantly through the game
@@monsieurliquorice of all the things I love about this video I’m never going to live this one down lmao
@@Guardison lol, but really, I loved the video. Amazing work 👍
@@Guardison Oh hey I also had something else to tell you.... if you press X, it resets your selected item back to nothing, so to get from supers to normal, you only have to press X and then select instead of cycling around.
I'm in love with this video and it's very inspiring to me
Thank you so so much for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it that much!
The Thing motif being used... Interesting... it's a nice theme!
Those circular, hollow, orange spaghetti sauce colored enemies are spaghetti-o's not cheerios. Ok I feel better now😂
@@michaelzborowskyii4668 true there’s nothing cheery about them
super stoked to watch this. Actually just finished replaying super metroid recently. Not familiar with the others but damn do I love super metroid. Might check out the others as well. I'll comment more thoughts once I watch the vid :)
Thank you for watching regardless, I hope I can do Super Metroid some justice! And I hope you like hearing about the other games too haha
Metroid Zero Mission is one of my favorite games in the whole damn series.
A friend of mine said it was their favorite/the best in the whole series too and just from what I played, I can't disagree yet. It was really damn good.
You should have sat with the Metroid 2 title screen just a bit longer ;)
See I had a few people tell me that but I swore I sat there for like a minute or so! I’ll have to boot it back up to see again.
@@Guardison Please report back when you do lol
But we’ll have to cross that bridge after some…initial research lmao
Thank you for watching!
good video dawg
Thank you brother I'm glad you enjoyed it
11:00 you went the wrong way, but developers we're counting on this at the time of release: for people to believe they only need to go right.
METROID PRIME 4
That’s what IM SAYIN
@@Guardison at some point it would be cool to see your thoughts on the prime series
don’t worry it’s on the short list for the next time I do Metroid!
I think Metroid is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills aleins and doesnt afraid of anything.
Finally someone says what we're all thinking
3:29 Yes, it was.
@@theonlybilge what can I say I like pointy metal sticks
@@Guardison
I was referring to your hair and answering the question asked on screen.
At 1:05:11, those arent Chozo, they're the Space Pirates who work for Mother Brain.
@@Guardison Also, I was wrong in my time code, lol. I actually meant 1:05:10
have you ever played the megaman series? if not, might make some video.
I haven’t! It’s definitely on the list but it’s one of those series that has so many entries it feels so daunting to start lmao
@@Guardison Yeah, i can unerstand that feeling.
1:04:33 When I first saw that name as a kid, I thought it was pronounced planet "Zeebs". Lolz
Did you ever play classic Megaman? :D
Not yet! I’d like to but it’s such a long series of games. I’d have to sit down and figure out how to break them up into something easier to digest.
