Hello! Sincere apologies for any artifacting errors you see in the video, I re-rendered and re-edited the clips multiple times to try and fix them but they kept appearing (though they are lesser now!) I'm sorry if it ever gets distracting, I think it's time to upgrade my PC soon lmao Also thank you all for 400 subs at the time of release and instantly making my outro obsolete again, you guys are great.
700 at the time of me watching this video not even a week later lol Oh well, it's good for that to be obsoletr I guess, seems like the channel's growing pretty quick!
@@MeeraRustshieldSystem yeah I’m definitely not mentioning sub numbers in a video from here out probably, at least not major milestones. It’s been really funny but also just really humbling. Thank you so much for watching!
I like how in this video the viewer is an adventurer that just wandered into a cave and found some guy who immediately starts a tangent for over an hour. I like to think the adventure is just too polite to leave or interrupt him but also doesn't want to be there, so he just sits there patiently and nodding his head. Jokes aside, this was a really well done video. You've earned yourself another subscriber. I have no doubt your channel's going to blow up. Looking forward to seeing future content from you.
You walk into my cave you're not getting away without at least an hour of mediocre jokes and at LEAST 3 references to Sonic the Hedgehog. And you're gonna LIKE it. Thank you so much for watching though! I appreciate it so much.
I love finding other people using UA-cam to chronicle their journeys through games they haven’t played. Looking forward to seeing what comes out in the future
I hope you replay LttP some more, and discover other things it has to offer, that you may have missed out on. For example, while the sword doesn’t quite give you the full range of attack you see with the swing, the spin attack does give you a full 360 attack, and doubles the power of your swing. You mentioned those eyes that shoot the lasers. The ones you blocked by quickly turning around? Well, when you are holding down “B” with the sword out, Link will hold his shield next to his side. If you face the shield on his side towards the eye, and strafe, the shield will still protect you from the attack. That’s how clever the programming in this game can be. Also, the ice rod freezing enemies is far better than the boomerang. It’s a permanent freeze, and it also will give you the ability to hit frozen enemies with the magic hammer. They get smashed and drop magic. It’s a great way to top off your magic.
I grew up with this series and I still struggle to come back to the first two in any real appreciable way. I love the idea of them but in practice they’re both difficult pills to swallow for different reasons. Love to hear the perspective of someone coming to the titles now without a nostalgia filter. Big fan of this video, couldn’t click subscribe fast enough!
Thank you so much for watching! I've seen a lot of people talking about why Zelda 1/2 are their favorites and it's definitely given me a better perspective on the systems in them. While I don't necessarily think I'm gonna jump back into them at any point, it gives me a different perspective to the discussion.
@@Guardison the first half of Zelda 2 before you take the raft still draws me in but holy shit does it go downhill from there. Also, forgot to mention, beating that Rupy joke to death had me laughing every time!
I have to say that in Zelda 2, roughly 42 minutes into the video, you can absolutely make that jump out of that area. You just have to time it well to maintain your momentum. I grew up with the Zelda series and had the chance to play those early titles when I was young and had far more patience so I learned those tricks just from playing the game over and over. I will say I never considered the pattern in the final fight with Ganon in the original though. I would just have a bunch of hearts and potions, yes using two potions to clear the dungeon, leave and buy two more potions, and then head back in and fight Ganon. Good times! I really enjoyed the video, thank you for sharing.
I'm sure if I had TAS-Hands I could have probably made the jump happen, but in fairness I *did* try for a good 10-15 minutes overall to try and get out. Eventually I just made the decision I did and it really tainted my perception of the overall game I think. Thank you so much for watching though!
@@Guardison I am looking forward to seeing more videos. I really enjoy seeing how people view games that were released many years ago. Also I cannot say I have TAS-Hands, which is the first time I heard that one, but growing up I was good at games. Enough to hold the world record in Super Metroid for a few years. But just like those games it's all ancient history at this point. Keep up the great work.
As a gamer for 30+ years first on PC and then mainly on PS I am just diving into Nintendo games and decided to try Zelda starting from the original and I must say I enjoyed your introspective quite a bit! I will probably not force myself to play a lot of Zelda II, but can't wait to try Link to the Past! You got a new subscriber here, cheers from Czech Republic ;)
I wouldn't blame anyone for not going through Zelda II at all, the only reason I finished it was for the sake of the video. It's definitely one of those games that benefits from being a childhood game and playing it so often. Thanks so much!
If this is anything like the quality of your Mario vid, this will be a real treat. sure Bingus. Your videos in this style make me truly happy... and as an old man that isn't easy. Keep doing this, it's wonderful.
This intro felt a lot better than the last one! It felt like a cool segment. Nice one! Curious to see where your journey leads you next. Gonna stick around for sure!
The bit where you dressed up as the Old Man in the cave with that Nerf gun "100 Rupees! I'm not asking!" while pointing the gun at the screen and calling the Old Woman Granny Good Shit literally had me LOLing and immediately Subbed! I usually only watch 20 or so minutes of hour long videos and sometimes watch the rest hours or days later, but not with your work! I sat through it in one sitting and I was genuinely sad when it ended and wanted more!!
I'm very glad those jokes landed! I wasn't sure if people would think they were funny or just trying too hard for a bit lmao Thank you so much for watching!
@@Guardison Thank You for the Entertainment! I busted out laughing throughout the video! I had Zelda 2 as a kid playing NES and that terrified me bout playing Zelda 1 as I thought that game would be like Zelda 2 was and my little kid brain noped outta reliving that nightmare as there wasn't the internet back then to bail you out when you have no idea what the fuck to do and 99% percent of my playthroughs were the Gannon mocking you Game Over screen and being sent back to the first screen with Zelda roofied in the Palace so I completely sympathize with your opinions on that game! I also LOVED Link to the Past and even got a huge ass strategy guide for the game after months of begging my parents for one as again, no internet, but I wanted to find and do everything I could in the game unlike Zelda 2 which I avoided like the plague! This entire video described exactly how I felt back in the day as a kid discovering the games for the first time! You absolutely nailed that vibe!
As someone who played these games as a child, it was really cool to see someone experience them for the first time in the modern day. A Link to the Past is still one of my favorite games of all time. I pick it up and play it from time to time. It truly is a masterpiece! Great video! I found it difficult to stop watching. Subscribed!
Really enjoyed watching this all the way through.. Very well done! 👏.. And just have to say, you're voice is very easy to listen to and suited for this. No irritating, unnatural inflections (but not boring) , great concise points and humor. Didn't even skip ahead. Subbed for sure.
Thank you so very much for watching! I was a little worried about this one because there were some technical issues in a lot of spots during the editing process, but I'm glad it came together so well in the end!
Link to the past is one of my favourite games, so many staples of the Zelda franchise begin with this game. Various musical tracks reoccurring themes and tools as well as mechanics. So good.
Yooo I'm glad I found your channel yesterday through the Mario vid so now I get to watch two awesome vids back to back! Great content man, Zelda 2 will forever remain unbeaten on my shelf!
I find it fascinating how favorable you spoke of Zelda 1 in comparison to the first Mario - I consider the latter to be a lot more accessible and fun than the former. I wonder if your opinion would've been the same if you had played them in a reserved order, since you went into Zelda 1 without expecting much. Just a thought!
I think I definitely set my expectations just a little bit lower so that I wouldn't get too demolished by it. But also I do think there are a lot of places where Zelda 1 is just way more forgiving! Not needing a Start + A to keep your pgoress definitely helps lmao
I played them in reverse order (Zelda first, then Mario), and I've gotta say that Zelda is definitely the better title for controls ALONE (granted, I played Zelda emulated on a DS, while I played Mario 1 on an actual NES).
@Guardison Man! This is an amazing video you've put together here. I just wanted to drop a comment for you and tell you thank you for the entertainment. Keep up the great work bud!!
@Guardison bro you don't need to rebalance it...if 9 year old me beat it in 1989 pre internet, think you can do it. Use a guide where needed and play smartly in combat, and it actually becomes one of my favorite zelda games. I wish nintendo would do a remake on it. I'd love to see a version of it today with a fresh coat of paint and some quality of life upgrades
Super entertaining! Glad I found your channel. Can't wait for the OoT/MM coverage at one point and if you haven't played the Metroid games before it would also be a great idea. Actually Metroid 1 and 2 are just torture but the jump to Super Metroid will be unprecedented lmao
Thank you so much for watching! Metroid is definitely on the short list of series I might do next, but we'll see what I end up tackling first! These videos are a bit of a task to make lmao
In ALttP you can just hold your sword out and that locks your direction and that enables you to deal with the laser eyes without having to look like you're having an epileptic seizure trying to maneuver them... Face up when the eyes are on your right and face down when they're on your left. Easy as can be.
@@Guardison You can also use the Magic Cape or the Cane of Byrna to become invincible and walk through them. There are more ways to go about problems in LttP than you'd initially think.
22:47 - Those jumping bunnies were weak against arrows. They take several stabs of the sword to kill but just a single arrow to kill, and the arrow keeps going so you could snipe 2 or 3 bunnies with a single arrow. 31:07 - There's a trick to beating those Darknuts that make them a lot easier. You jump up in the air, and as you come down, stab them in the face (not a Down Stab attack, just a regular attack that hits them in the face). For some reason, they fall for that a lot. 32:27 - Imagine how cool a Link RPG would be, similar to Super Mario RPG. 33:54 - Yea I would have to say Zelda 2 is a hard game that doesn't mess around. 40:32 - For years as a kid, I was stuck at the river town because I didn't know where to find Bagu the River Man. Vague quests. 47:38 - Zelda 2 was my favorite Zelda game until Breath of the Wild came out. Back when I only had Z1 and Z2 to play, I found Z2 to be the far more challenging and enjoyable experience. I think what made A Link To The Past so neat was that there was a Dark World that was like a perversion of the Light World, and you could get to new places by switching between the worlds. 1:09:47 - Yea the Ice Palace is terrible. I hate that dungeon. Breath of the Wild is good, but I found it was good because of how similar to Zelda 2 that it feels, so beware. lol
I always appreciate hearing people that say they enjoy Zelda 2 so much because I totally understand why someone would get so attached to it. The ideas there could work so well with another real, genuine attempt and I hope that one day Nintendo makes another game like it or, hell, give it a remake treatment. I'm sure you could do something really fun with a new graphics engine and side-scrolling style. But thank you so much for watching! Sorry I didn't reply to all the points but I always love hearing comments from people WAY more knowledgeable on these games than I am lmao.
NES Zelda is one of those games that never gets old. The mechanics and the graphics might be outdated, but as an experience it has something to offer that very few games have achieved. The sense of mystery and danger in the open world makes exploration into such an adventure. The combat and the dungeons are challenging, but that's what makes the game so fulfilling. I remember struggling with one of the Darknut rooms to the point where I probably did it 20 times, but Zelda was also the first game I ever completed.
I really like Zelda 1 overall and everything that it was able to do with older hardware! I think it's still incredibly impressive as proof of concept, and it's still crazy to me how quickly they got a formula down for the series that just worked. I can totally see why someone would love this game so much, even if I do see some personal flaws!
Haven't watched yet but I really liked the Mario video (don't think I'm quite done it yet, got it paused well over halfway through in another tab probably). Just wanted to feed the algorithm and wish you luck, your vids are oddly compelling.
As one who played Zelda II back in 2007 through emulators and becoming obsessed with it, I have gone through the game dozens of times. First few times I thought the game was impossible - now I can go through the game in a couple of hours without dying once. But that took a long time to get there. Also, you only have to go to Darunia once. Get the kidnapped kid and then go to Darunia.
the way how i finished watching the mario video literally like 2 hours ago and a new video comes out immediately after, this world has too many coincidences
Definitely not a “walking skill issue” if you made it all the way to the end of Zelda 2. Even if you struggled like hell, the accomplishment alone sets you apart from so many who started and gave up.
It's been both funny and almost humbling to see comments on both sides of that, people saying they never finished it because of how hard it was, or that they cleared it easily and played it so many times. I'm glad I got through it, but I still feel like maybe I didn't play it "right" or missed something lmao.
Great video! I really like the style and format of this series. Not sure if you take requests or recommendations but I highly recommend the Donkey Kong Country SNES Trilogy. They're my favorite games of all time and some of the best platformers around without a doubt, and I think they would work perfectly as another addition to this "I've never played" series. When it comes to this format of playing each one in order, only having knowlege of the games before and sort of comparing them as you go along and how the series evolves, I can't think of a better series than this one. Regardless I look forward to whatever you intend on making in the future. Congrats on the growth!
I've had a lot of requests for DKC so far so I definitely think it's one of the first couple of games on the short list for the future! Thank you so so much for watching!
It isn't called the Master Sword, but the Magic Sword in Legend of Zelda {1} is 100% the Master Sword. A Link to the Past is a prequel to LoZ over 100 years back, the Old Man who happens to have the Master Sword after all this time doesn't know it's name or its legacy, only that it will help the Hero when he is worthy to wield it
I definitely see the relationship between the Magic Sword and the Master Sword between the games, but it really felt like they decided on what the Master Sword really was in LttP. They had the idea of a powerful, magical sword in the first game but really dove deep into what it would eventually become, at least in my opinion! And honestly it really worked out.
@@GuardisonOh, absolutely they ramped up the lore to great effect. I'm just sayin' it's the same weapon, a legacy passed down through the generations that LoZ 1 Link acquires through the journey. In a way, it could be said that the Magic/Master Sword is that first Published Link's... Link to the Past.
Hey, got some good news for you. Every time I find a smaller channel putting out solid longform content and sub it, I come across it again like a year or two later and it has 250k subscribers or something wild. So, congratulations on your future success! Edit: Also, Zelda 2 is PROBABLY my favorite in the series, I did grow up with it though. A big trick with it is learning how to use jump attacks, crouch jumps and jumping crouch attacks to modulate your shield and attack all over. It was the Dark Souls of its day in a lot of real ways. A guy who goes by Hoverbat here on UA-cam has produced an AMAZING remake/remaster of the game with a ton of extra content and features that I will absolutely not recommend with how little you enjoyed the base game as it's intended for Zelda 2 masters, but holy shit is it good, real labor of love.
Ah so what you're saying is if I fall off before that then I have YOU to blame and not my own work ethic or quality? In this house we LOVE a good scapegoat. :) But thank you so much for watching! I've seen a lot about a lot of the different fan games out there, I know there's a few that are specifically for rebalancing and adjusting the overall gameplay, so if anything I'd probably lean into that first for Zelda 2. I REALLY wanted to like it and have the conflicting opinion that it was a good game, but sadly all it did was kick me into the mud.
@@Guardison Miyamoto and crew have basically buried the game and I think he said it's the one game he regrets making, so it's definitely not their best work. I came into it as a kid after really enjoying Rygar, another similar sort of side scrolling action RPG that's far more approachable (and I highly DO recommend) though so that may have something to do with it. There is undeniably a learning curve to Zelda 2 but if you watch some accomplished players it's crazy what can be pulled off. I think it was just one or two steps shy of being great, if there were sub-weapons or more leeway in magic or something. Among the things that CAN help a lot are that you should always use the shield magic if you're facing down something tough because getting your MP back isn't too hard, every 8th enemy you kill drops an item, USUALLY a blue bottle but it can also be a red bottle or p-bag. You also need to get used to jump attacks, if you hit a darknut with an attack as you fall into them it usually tags them in the head over their shield, alternatively you can crouch jump into them and attack under their block, it's surprisingly complicated and engaging, at least when you're 7.
It's crazy how unaware I am of how hard Zelda 2 is. I've been playing it since it came out and I was a very small barely literate child (I had to get a parent to read the text to me half the time), and through some combination of Nintendo Power and schoolyard conversations, I learned every secret, and every strategy. So now when I go back and play it, I can just kinda... breeze through it? Like a lot of the combat is still challenging, but I can reliably beat Zelda 2 in a few hours. So, to me, the good elements shine through a lot more because I have all this ingrained muscle memory for how to beat everything in the game. How to make sure to use the Life spell when I pick up a red magic flask so that it fills up both the magic bar and health bar. Or the exact way to jump and strike to take out boomerang and axe guys with ease. Or how to take out the floating skulls to farm XP. Et cetera. But hearing your experience makes me understand much more the largely negative outlook on the game by the overall fandom that had always baffled me. It just didn't seem that hard, and when people said it was so hard, they didn't really give good specific examples of why. So thanks for explaining it with such clarity! I'll always have a soft spot for the game, but I finally get why others aren't so fond.
It was definitely a matter of going in as blind as I possibly could that made it so difficult. Not knowing certain secrets or what exactly it was expecting of me at points, it makes it a more daunting experience with everything it expects of you so suddenly. I'm sure if I spent more time with it and practiced, had more information now, I might clear through it a bit easier, but I'm glad you enjoy it so much! I certainly didn't make the video to try and convince people that the game was bad, just documenting my experience with games that so many people have already gone through!
In context of the time, it’s amazing LttP returned to form, because Zelda 2 was a huge hit and was *insanely* influential for the next five years. So many developers were convinced Zelda 2 was the magic they needed to bottle. It seems opaque now (and is) but earlier games like tower of druaga were even more arcane, they just didn’t make games to be completed back then
Stumbled onto your channel, and really enjoy this video. I am similar yet *somewhat* inverse to your Zelda experience. Finished 1 & 2, skipped LttP, went to Ocarina, and missed most else. Like you, I’m correcting that. Kinda random but if you like adventure games, ever try the Ys games?
Thank you so much for watching! Glad to find people going through a similar journey of their own! I’ve never played the Ys games no, but I’m somewhat aware of them. Not too much, but at least recognize the names!
Zelda games overall were never for me. I suck majorly at them and i don't enjoy them. Mad respect trying them. I am sorry to see you were mostly struggling. I feel you man...
I actually really enjoy upgrading the master sword in a link to the past! I remember as a kid just becoming shocked that this master sword could be upgraded and I think it kinda ties into how an ancient sword could use a little touch up!
Oh yeah I didn’t hate actually upgrading it, I think it’s a good decision to keep progression going. But it also felt like I was looking at the Mona Lisa and going “you know what, it needs an update” lmao.
oh man, I just binged through your channel yesterday and had blast, i was very happy when I noticed you update, with a zelda video. if i had favrite part in the vdeo, it defintly would have to the opening and inbtwean bits. I alos enjoyed you ging into the comparisons of the zelda vs mario formula. as for my own memriose of these, the only one i had alot of experince with is Alttp, which i played the shit out of as a kid, but think I only ended up beating it once or twice(I also was much worse at games as a kid.) the other to i only really played when I got the gamecube collection, and while made almost no progress in either, frankly I prefered zelda 2 at the time. I have semi recntly playerd through Zelda 1 from start to finish, and while I can apreciete the game both for what it was at the time and its importnace with the franchise, but I still didn't really gel with the game.
Thank you for watching all the other videos! I'm still proud of them, even if I think they're not as good already lmao. While I think LttP is by far the best of the three I still think it's totally fine to like any of them. Even if some wires might not be connected right if Zelda 2 is your favorite. But thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the opening and connecting bits, I wasn't sure if they would be fun or cringe!
It's definitely on the short list of the games I'd play through next, but I don't think the next video specifically is an I've Never! We'll see though!
Imagine it took 30 years to find out what the hint: '10th enemy has the bomb' really means. 30 years and the internet. for reference: if you kill 9 enemies without getting hit, then kill the 10th with a bomb, you get new bombs garanteed.
@@GuardisonAnd the funny thing is the commenter who told you still doesn't have it quite right. No bomb kill required, every 10th kill on a no-hit streak (so long as it's an enemy that can drop an item) drops a bomb. If it's a foe that can't drop an item, you still get it on the next kill that can so long as you don't take a hit.
Also you can jump up on that ledge in the island palace by the elevator where you died and lost 3750 points with next level being 4000. Yes, the jump sucks and takes a whole to perfect but you can clear the jump.
I don't doubt that you could make it, I got close more than a few times, but after about 20 minutes of trying I figured it was better for my own time to just die and run on back, even if it pissed me off lmao.
It was really eye opening to see the lack of releases for the series when shit like Mario is Missing, Hotel Mario, etc etc exist for Mario's games. It's like "here have this slop" for Mario, meanwhile they take their time cooking a delicious steak when it comes to Zelda. Just saying, there's a reason there's no Zelda Strikers.
Zelda 1 came out when I was ~5 years old, it was so far ahead of everything else at the time + that gold cartridge added a ton of mystique and prestige to my young brain....but here's the thing...hardly anyone had a computer back then, computers were for schools, maybe an apple II if you were lucky. Zelda was on the tv and it would SAVE your progress...absolutely mindboggling, like your character goes to sleep and is there again next time you play.
Your vids are great! You should try playing some early JRPGs if you really want to simultaneously go insane and see just how much the medium has advanced in our lifetimes.
I've thought about going through some of the classic JRPGs like Dragon Quest or FF, but those are definitely a daunting task! Not opposed to it, just have to pick and choose my battles over time!
Zelda: I played this game when it was new. I still love it but I just can't play it anymore. Too clunky. Zelda 2: This game is hot garbage. Link to the Past: This one got it right. I didn't even play it until a few years ago... because Zelda 2 was hot garbage. I wasn't even aware of another Zelda game after Zelda 2, until Ocarina. Now I'm loving TotK & even uploading a playthrough. This was a good video. Surprising to see someone enjoy the original like this, so many years later. As someone who was 12 when it came out, I can't even deal with it anymore. But you're right about all these games. I subbed. 👍🏼☕
Thank you all so much for watching! I’m glad someone else feels the pain about Zelda 2, and resonated with LttP like I did! Eventually I gotta get back to trying BotW/TotK, and playing some of the older 3D titles like Ocarina!
@@gdassspar6nar yeah I’ve been told the ice rod has some good uses overall, it just felt strange that it was in such an optional location in the first place (even though I walked right by it oops) Thank you so much for watching!
Haha, technically I did play the OG games and Gold and Silver, but I'm way more acquainted with everything R/S/E onwards. I'm not counting it out though, might make it more of a retrospective than a first time playthrough though!
bro why does everyone in this comment section love zelda 2, 😭. at least their open to different opinions but damn that game is rough to play nowadays.. oh yeah also great video and i can’t wait to see more now that i’ve binged this never played trilogy, tho with this quality im interested in anything u put out next!
yeah I was surprised how many fans of Zelda 2 ended up commenting! It's nice to see that there's still such a fanbase for it though! Also thank you so much for watching!
Welcome back to Miyamoto's House of Torment. He based this original game on his childhood experiences playing in the woods. So it's only natural that he would use those memories to ruin the childhood of young people across the world. Enjoy systematically burning every bush on screen, kids! My favorite is The Adventure of Link with its more robust fighting system. But I appreciate A Link to the Past for giving audiences the chance to revisit the first game's experience, but now with a slight chance to figure out where in the world you're supposed to go without consulting any print materials.
I can definitely see why people would enjoy Zelda 2! Especially if you have way more experience with it and have played it for a long time. Unfotunately I don't fall into that camp oops lmao.
@@Guardison I suppose my opinion of the first game (that it's nigh unplayable, both in obscurity and in difficulty) balances out my opinion of the sequel. And these opinions aren't after-the-fact perspectives: my trauma goes back to my pre-K days. You say in the video that the combat in Zelda 2 is hard, and while I wouldn't exactly say that it's simple, I think it's Kirby's Epic Yarn compared to the nonsense of having to fight a three-headed green dragon with detaching heads when all you have is a pathetic wooden dagger that practically requires you to take a hit in order to reach the enemy's hit box.
@@MAMorenozelda one allows you to take on the dragon with the flying heads with the wooden sword, but it doesn't require it. The game rewards exploration over boss rushing
@@priestesslucy I mean, it really doesn't matter how upgraded the sword is. It's the range that's the problem. And the Gleeok's hit box in particular is very strange. Zelda 2's side-scrolling swordplay just feels much easier to employ with precision.
Everyone hides in the caves because it's dangerous to go alone. And it's a good idea to have the Nintendo Power from the era around. They were a major help for many. I recall a pretty thick book coming out for the snes version that a buddy and I used before and after school.
Yeah I had a few guidebooks of my own here and there, I know I still have a big KH2 one laying around somewhere! I was tempted to use more focused guides, but I wasn’t sure how much that would be “””cheating””” So I mostly just stuck with using a map and that was about it.
@@GuardisonZelda 1 actually came with a fair bit of material to help out new players, including a map of about half the overworld, so using a map is fine by me.
@@Guardison Game genie was cheating, but that was a lot of fun. And there's nothing wrong with cheating when you're not using it against someone else. Sometimes it's what actually made a rental playable for the weekend. lol
I thiiiiink the secret at the tree at the dead end hint in Zelda 1 is a reference to the most north eastern tile of the overworld map which has a 100 rupee secret room. Just below it is a map tile with a tree you can walk into for a gambling game. Above that tree on the cliff face is an invisible staircase. Although that does nothing to make the hint clear or obvious, haha
@@Guardison Sure ! Recently I wanted to revisit these games without playing it, so I watched a speedrun which was fun, and your video is a nice point of view
1:10:10 You don't have to do the "quick precision" thing. The intended solution to the puzzle is to just charge your sword spin while walking. Link always holds his shield to his right and doesn't change direction when you're charging your sword, so you can just walk through those tight corridors with your shield pointed at the wall eyes.
I actually haven't played any Zelda, ever, beyond maybe 5 min of skyward sword in video game shop, or about to the wake of link to the past. Even though I owned a 64. It's something I should rectify tbh
I've always been really interested in them, but just never had the means or time to get too deep into them. Or, y'know, the brain growth to comprehend simple puzzles lmao.
If you wanna stick to trios of games and do more of these, might I suggest the following trios: 1. Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons (Linked game), Link's Awakening (DX or Switch remake) 2. Ocarina of Time (or remake), Majora's Mask (NOT remake), Twilight Princess (or HD) 3. The Minish Cap, Four Swords (requires multiplayer), Four Swords Adventures (multiplayer optional) 4. The Wind Waker (or HD), Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks 5. A Link Between Worlds, Tri Force Heroes (sorry it's a duo this time) 6. Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom. I tried to balance release order with groups that were connected by story, so they're out of order in spots. P.S. If you play the Oracle games, play Ages first!! Then use the code from Ages to play Seasons. If you play in that order, a lot of plot threads get wrapped up nicely, which doesn't really happen in reverse order... P.P.S. I also suggest ignoring the remake for Majora's Mask. The remake removes a lot of atmosphere and uniqueness in an attempt to "fix" one of the most beloved games in the series.
It doesn't necessarily have to be trios, like I did with Mario and doing 4 in total! It's mostly just trying to compare and contrast games that have a lot of things in common, or similar gameplay designs around the same time! But yeah those all seem about right for what I considered for future videos! Hard to plan out that far ahead, but I'll definitely keep these all in mind!
I have seen people not get the ice rod and Ive seen people never get the net and never get the powder but if you do get those items they can help heal you
Yeah I used the net and powder a lot! I had a friend tell me about some of the utility of the ice rod, definitely made me wish I found it earlier. Still feels really weird that it’s not something you get by nature of doing the dungeons since it’s mandatory for progression though!
Best Zelda II Game Genie & Pro Action codes: -Remove random encounters. -Infinite lives. -Gain 256+ EXP per kill. -Don't lose EXP on level up. (Disable at max level.) Now, you can have fun while still sometimes reading guides!
seeing you do the square soft catalog would be fun mainly Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII, VIII, Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Secret of Mana , Secret of Evermore
It's dangerous to go alone! Take this 🗡 This is such a huge part of my childhood and still play it to this day. But not just the game, this is what we did when we were kids. We were allowed to go out and explore the world as Shigeru Miyamoto based this on his own childhood experiences. Brilliance.
I definitely feel that inspiration so much in the first game. Though I hope Miyamoto didn’t get in nearly as many fights with monsters and run into old people in caves.
Not that you need to...but ok so if you hold out your sword the shield is locked out to the side, which means you can use that sometimes for those jank Lazer traps for instance
Yeah, someone pointed that out to me and I think I felt my brain get smoother for forgetting that I could do that in the first place oops. But hey, makes it easier for a return trip!
This one over here officer, I found Miyamoto's alt account. But also I get it! I think it could be a really good time with some rebalancing of various systems, I don't blame any one for enjoying the pain at all. But uh...more for you, less for me.
@@Guardison I love watching these kinds of videos. It feels like I get to vicariously play these games again for the first time. I really did like your suggestions for updating the Zelda 2 formula for modern times. I think that could be really cool.
Honestly I love Zelda 2. I played it a couple months ago with no save states and it was not that bad. Took a few hours but was pretty easy other than a couple sections.
I don't blame anyone for clicking with it better than I did! I think it does a lot of things well and I'd absolutely love to see another take on the formula like I said. But for my tastes, the things I enjoy in a game, it really rubbed me the wrong way, especailly deeper into the game. Thank you for watching!
There's a streamer I watch, Vinny Vinesauce, and he loves Zelda 2. He plays it every year! Maybe you could watch some of his streams and pick up some strategies for Zeldy 2.
Yeah I watch Vinny regularly too, it was partly the inspiration to put Zelda 2 in this video. Though I guess I got a little too comfortable watching a man with 20+ years of experience playing the game play it well lmao.
@@Guardison As far I cannot tell any differences. The Collection Edition only has Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Adeventure of Link, and The Legend of Zelda. According to the information I found The Collection Eddition is only for Nintendo Power mermbers. But I found my copy on GameStop in the shelves years ago. XD As for A Link To The Past, I played in the GBA, and then in the Nintendo Wii. But I think thoses games are now avaible in the Swtich EShop, I think? You have to check for yourself.
Out of the first 3 Zeldas, Zelda 2 is my favorite. I get the hate, being difficult, but it was the first game i ever finished, at just 3 years old... months of trial and error will get you anywhere with old nes games... honestly, I find it to be much easier than Zelda 1, being combat and reaction focused rather than burning trees and bombing walls at random.
I’ve been really surprised how many people have commented that Zelda 2 was their favorite! I’m glad the game has fans,I think it’s a game that could be great. It’s definitely one of those games that probably benefits from playing it as a kid.
New to channel. I may share more extensive thoughts on your video later, but for now I want to encourage you to play the original version of Link's Awakening. Why? Besides being the game that released after A Link to the Past, it is an easy step to miss in the series evolution. Don't accidentally (or intentionally) play the DX version or modern remake instead: you need to experience the regular Game Boy version (doesn't have to be original hardware, though) to see how it innovated from LttP.
I think, next time I do a bigger Zelda video like this, it’ll probably be LA, and the oracle games! It’s one of those ones that’s unassuming but so many people talk about how good and impressive it is. So I’m definitely looking forward to it!
@@Guardison Cool. My own bias is that Link's Awakening remains my favorite of the Zelda series. Admittedly, I have missed a lot: who would have thought I'd have *more* access to video games as a kid dependent on family buying them for me than as an adult! XD Such is life... When it comes to the original game, on original hardware, I've played (and completed) the original The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and... Link's Crossbow Training. I've played Zelda II: The Adventure of Link through The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition for the Nintendo GameCube (as well as replaying the other games that were on it). Sadly, right now I've just got access to the first two NES games via the NES Classic Edition. Just saying... if LA doesn't live up to expectations, it _might_ be because I'm mostly only versed in older Zelda titles... and not even all older Zelda titles, just the the core ones... and Link's Crossbow Training. >.>
the jokes do seem they’d land a bit better this time, still had an abundance of desperate sex jokes to do with ‘misspeaking’ the script; good video overall though, your takes on what is/isn’t dated game design are pretty based aswell
I've really been surprised how many Zelda 2 fans have come by! I'm glad there's a lot of people that really enjoy the game! I'm sure I'd have a better time playing through it again now that I know more about it, I think there's a great game in there under some weird design.
awww, too bad you didn't enjoy zelda II lol, I ended up enjoying more than the first zelda when I was replaying the original trilogy, but I get cause its a very grindy and repetitive loved your takes! really took me back for when I was a kid playing these games for the first time
I really really wanted to like it! It seemed like such a fun idea that I wanted to get invested in! And then I got ground into paste repeatedly… But thank you so much for watching!
It's not technically called the Master Sword in Zelda 1, they called it the "Magical Sword". Afaik the first time it was referred to as Master Sword was in LTTP! I could be wrong, there might be some alternate translation out there, but it wasn't originally the "Master Sword" in Zelda 1!
I’d appreciate an I’ve Never Played Zeldas on N64 video. And/or, have you ever given Quest 64 a shot? It has a terrible reputation that’s partially well-deserved, but the world building the game does make is fascinating and unique. You just have to talk to everyone to get that story (and think about what the bad translation is trying to say), something most reviewers don’t take the time to do since story in that game is almost entirely optional.
I watched someone play quest 64 relatively recently actually, and it seems extremely fascinating. I’d have to do some research but I’m definitely not opposed. And yeah don’t worry, there’ll probably be an ocarina/majora video sooner or later!
Yeah, I think I’ll do Ocarina sooner or later! Been trying to decide if it’s on its own or maybe pairing it up with Majora. I hope you enjoyed the video regardless!
I had Zelda 2 as a kid, and to me it was a very fun game. Brutally hard, yes. And frustrating as hell? Oh yeah. But at the end of the day, I considered it fun then. And I still enjoy the game despite, or maybe because of, the difficulty and frustration.
Nothing wrong with that! I think it’s one of those games you had to play as a kid and play it often to really enjoy! It’s brutal for someone going in blind though. Shame, because of how many cool ideas they had that they really should try again.
Zelda 2 is still a fantastic game, I'd argue it's better than Zelda 1, or at least I'd rather play it 9/10 times. It would be cool for them to revisit it in some form. The gameboy Zelda's had mini side scrolling sections and they worked pretty well.
I don't think anyone's wrong at all for enjoying Zelda 2, I think If I were to give it another shot now that I know what to expect, I think I'd have an easier time with it. That first time through just kinda shell shocked me.
@@Guardison Ya, it can be a bit rough until you understand the game better. I genuinely think it does many things better than Zelda 1 though. Like exploration for example, playing Zelda 2, I never found myself like truly lost, Death Mountain was a bit of a maze and a few of the dungeons themselves, but like the world gates itself off without feeling like you're trapped. Before and after each dungeon, there's some side object to go do, find a spell in the town, or an item before moving on the the dungeon. Zelda 1 is so full of those, "I don't know where the hell to go" moments, just to find the next dungeon, I never had that issue in Zelda 2. If you thought Zelda 1 had some problems there, try the second quest, which I finally beat for the first time earlier this year. So many required moments of bombing outside of the rooms on the map.
In short... Zelda 1: A solid template. (And, for some reason, Link is Christian and Hyrule worships Christ because of all the crosses around. This changes in the third game.) Zelda 2: Cheat your way through it to be fun. Its innovations were likely best done for the sake of long-term benefit for gamers. Zelda 3: Where I put tens or hundreds of hours out of love.
Hello! Sincere apologies for any artifacting errors you see in the video, I re-rendered and re-edited the clips multiple times to try and fix them but they kept appearing (though they are lesser now!) I'm sorry if it ever gets distracting, I think it's time to upgrade my PC soon lmao
Also thank you all for 400 subs at the time of release and instantly making my outro obsolete again, you guys are great.
700 at the time of me watching this video not even a week later lol
Oh well, it's good for that to be obsoletr I guess, seems like the channel's growing pretty quick!
@@MeeraRustshieldSystem yeah I’m definitely not mentioning sub numbers in a video from here out probably, at least not major milestones. It’s been really funny but also just really humbling.
Thank you so much for watching!
@@Guardison Ok I finished the video and I'm back here to say: 800 now, 900 soon.
@@Guardisonyeah your channel is gonna be big, dude.
I love finding other people using UA-cam to chronicle their journeys through games they haven’t played. Looking forward to seeing what comes out in the future
Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it so much, I look forward to seeing what I end up making too lmao
1:05:28 "I want a weapon I can hit every weapon across the map with"
That's what Bombos, Quake, and Ether are for! (among other things)
Yeah I used it a few times, they were a nice utility to have!
But hear me out. Gun.
@@Guardison You make a compelling argument 🤣
@@Guardisonit is an extremely difficult jump to make. In all honesty, “Jump” should probably be an item and not a spell. Similar with “Reflect”.

Thank you so much for watching! It means a lot.

The bit where you dressed up as the Old Man in the cave with that Nerf gun "100 Rupees! I'm not asking!" while pointing the gun at the screen and calling the Old Woman Granny Good Shit literally had me LOLing and immediately Subbed!

Well I'm glad you enjoyed the videos! In complete fairness, I was only at like 200 a week or so ago? So steadily climbing!
Let it rot, it knows exactly what it did.
But also thank you so much for watching!
Fr tho
@@Guardison Battery save was a game changer
I played them in reverse order (Zelda first, then Mario), and I've gotta say that Zelda is definitely the better title for controls ALONE (granted, I played Zelda emulated on a DS, while I played Mario 1 on an actual NES).
The first zelda game had a manual that explained a lot and a fold out map.
Oh good, now I don't have to feel bad about finding my own fold out map online. I mean in my totally real box.
Very real console Nintendo I swear :)
Yup! It had a little mini-walkthrough to get you to the first dungeon, which is why the intro scroll tells you to read the manual!
@Guardison Man! This is an amazing video you've put together here. I just wanted to drop a comment for you and tell you thank you for the entertainment. Keep up the great work bud!!
Thank you so so much for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it, I hope to put out even more soon!
Zelda 2 is *very* divisive. I'm sure you see why now.
Yeah, I'd be tempted to try out one of the fan patches to see how a re-balancing changes how I feel about the game.
Do it!
@@jrvbamafan1So you wish Nintendo would do... Exactly what those patches do 😂

Yknow, that makes a lot more sense when you say it like that.
Oddly compelling is what I strive for so I'll absolutely take it.
All according to plan :) But I hope you enjoy this one too!
HES BACK
BACK AGAIN
But thank you so much for watching!

I hope so too! It seems to be pretty steady so far, even more than I might have even expected lmao.

Imagine it took 30 years to find out what the hint: '10th enemy has the bomb' really means. 30 years and the internet.
for reference: if you kill 9 enemies without getting hit, then kill the 10th with a bomb, you get new bombs garanteed.
Oh god is that what that one meant…?
Those old men are the worst, confirmed.
“Zelda is the franchise that Nintendo takes more pride in” . Spot ok

I was tempted to use more focused guides, but I wasn’t sure how much that would be “””cheating”””
So I mostly just stuck with using a map and that was about it.
Sometimes it's what actually made a rental playable for the weekend. lol
Tell me you weren't born in the 80s without telling me you weren't born in the 80s

"Local Old Man hides treasure under a tree in a dead end, in a country full of dead end trees"

Yeah I completely forgot about that functionality until someone else pointed it out too, haven’t felt that dumb in a while lmao.
I actually haven't played any Zelda, ever, beyond maybe 5 min of skyward sword in video game shop, or about to the wake of link to the past. Even though I owned a 64. It's something I should rectify tbh

If you wanna stick to trios of games and do more of these, might I suggest the following trios:
1. Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons (Linked game), Link's Awakening (DX or Switch remake)
2. Ocarina of Time (or remake), Majora's Mask (NOT remake), Twilight Princess (or HD)
3. The Minish Cap, Four Swords (requires multiplayer), Four Swords Adventures (multiplayer optional)
4. The Wind Waker (or HD), Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks
5. A Link Between Worlds, Tri Force Heroes (sorry it's a duo this time)

I only played them in the Collection Edition.
Were they any different than the regular one? I couldn't find anything like an "All-Star" version of these.
XD
As for A Link To The Past, I played in the GBA, and then in the Nintendo Wii.
Well at the end of the day at least I was pretty based.
Sad to see you didn't enjoy Zelda 2.
It's still one of my favorites of the series, though I agree it doesn't really hold up nowadays.
I've really been surprised how many Zelda 2 fans have come by! I'm glad there's a lot of people that really enjoy the game! I'm sure I'd have a better time playing through it again now that I know more about it, I think there's a great game in there under some weird design.

i literally just watched your mario video today what
The content senses were tingling.
Wait, you didn't get the master sword in zelda 1? It made a return in zelda 3 (link to the past), but it was introduced in the graveyard of zelda 1

Personally I think they should have just called old overworld maps in Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest JRPEGs.

That's the plot twist, you would think lttp perfected the formula... But it was links awakening
Yeah I've heard amazing things about Link's Awakening! I'll probably look at it soon, just have to figure out where it best slots in!
In short...
Zelda 1: A solid template. (And, for some reason, Link is Christian and Hyrule worships Christ because of all the crosses around. This changes in the third game.)
Zelda 2: Cheat your way through it to be fun. Its innovations were likely best done for the sake of long-term benefit for gamers.
Zelda 3: Where I put tens or hundreds of hours out of love.
Link knows that the true power needed to smite Ganon is the power of Christ. And money, to fire his bow in Zelda 1.
