Welcome to Amity Tracks. This is a channel where we discuss a wide range of music related topics. The focus will be on music from the 1960’s through the 1990’s, but not exclusively. Classic rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, jazz, blues, folk, country, soul…all genres are fair game. From time to time we may dabble in other popular culture, such as film, history or sports. But music is primarily what we do here. The focus is on the music and the artists. We hope to encourage an open and dynamic community with fun and informative discussions not only in the videos, but also in the comments section. Please note that, while disagreement and discussion is welcome, no personal attacks or out of bounds comments will be tolerated. We want to be a part of the positive larger vinyl community and other like-minded, music focused communities.

Muswell Hillbillies! (But any of your top 6 are worthy of the title.)
    Definite Deep Dive worthiness.

Happy to say I own 7 Kinks albums (and 2 compilations) and all 7 were in your top 10. Relatively new to the band, so like you mention them, i have been picking up alot of the CD remastered and expanded editions. If you shop around you can get some great new CD pack offers, which is handy as the Kinks have so many songs! Stuart

In my experience, there are no ranking videos more varied than THE KINKS ranking videos. It's pretty interesting.
    Thanks for posting.

Thanks, and I agree. I think it is probably that they have such distinct periods.

@@amitytracks Yep. I wasn't even aware of any theatrical, concept album period. Fortunately, I really like what I've heard from it so far.

    Here's my top 6:
    1 - Arthur
    2 - Village Green
    3 - Muswell Hilbillies
    4 - Something Else
    5 - Lola Vs. Powerman
    6 - Face To Face
Not too surprising, I know. It's difficult for me to rank the rest of their albums, as it's been quite a few years since I've listened to most of those, but I can sum it up by dividing things into eras:
    The Early Phase
Not a bad era at all if one simply listens to the singles, but the first three albums all have too many mediocre tracks on them. Occasionally a gem pops up, but not very often.
    The Golden Age
It was this stuff, from 1966 to 1971, that made the Kinks one of my favorite groups. Even the leftover tracks (found on The Great Lost Kinks Album) are mostly great. If these albums didn't exist, then the Kinks would be one of the dozens of groups that are represented by a small handful of songs on my playlist. Because of these albums (and the singles from the same era), I've got over a hundred Kinks songs on the list.
    The Concept Era
At the beginning of this period, the Kinks were already post-peak, but as it continued, things only got worse. There's some great songs scattered about these albums, but most of it's just bloated nonsense. As far as the concepts go, I can't at all relate to Ray Davies' idea of what makes a good story or interesting characters.
    The Comeback Years
This period started off pretty strongly, with quite a few solidly-built '70s rockers, but entering into the '80s, I found myself quickly losing interest. The Kinks during this latter period specialized in two sub-genres that I've always hated. The first is the "arena rocker," or at least the '80s variation of that. And the second is what I call the "Gigantic Ballad" - the "big moment" on any given album that I always find to be the dullest track of them all.
    The Waning Years
This period is largely the Kinks continuing along the same path they were on in the mid-'80s, but without the commercial success. There's very few highlights during this era, and even those aren't that big of a deal. I think Ray came up with better stuff after the group broke up.

That's a great break down. As you know from the videos, I'm a big fan of the Arista years, or the Comeback Years as you called them.

I've tried and tried but can't get into Muswell Hillbillies. I would have the first three albums in my top ten. Great episode.

Muswell might be my number one, then Village Green, then Face To Face. At least that's what makes sense to me right now. They're one of those bands who don't have a clear number one record to me. Top 5-6 are all great. Excellent rundown of their records!

Good shout about Face to Face. It' one of the great records of all time , but always seems to be left out of the magic albums of 1966: Revolver, Blonde on Blonde, Pet Sounds, Aftermath and Roger the Engineer (Over under sideways down in US).
I never really gor into Something else because the best Songs had already been issued as Singles many months before like Waterloo Sunset, Death of a clown and Live me till the sun shines. And the rest of the Songs don't match the euphoria or delicate melancholy of their masterpieces Face to Face, Village Green and Arthur.
    Here's my Top:
    1a. Arthur
    1b. Village Green
    1c. Face to Face
    4. Sunny Afternoon (1967)
    5. Muswell Hillbillies
    6. Well respected men (1966)
    7. Percy
    8. Live at Kelvin Hall (very rough live concert comparable to Got live if you want it by the Stones. But the Kinks were not the greatest live Band. It fact, they could be quite chaotic and untogether like when I saw them in 1973. But it does possess a raw charm😂.

Can't get passed the sound quality on Kelvin Hall.
