      You talk about where to put vapor barrier in warm versus cold climates. What about “4 seasons” climates that heat in the winter and A/C in the summer? I’m curious about your overall opinion here, but my project at-hand is a crawl space knee wall.

    • @macksonsylvestre772
      @macksonsylvestre772 Рік тому

      @@bj2448 when A/C is being used, the house is considered the cold source and the environment outside the house is the heat source. In other words, the insulation will do its job separating the hot medium from the cold (less hot) medium, therefore diminishing the heat flow towards the cooler space.

    When I lived in CA, I just went with the cheapest R-19 fiberglass for exterior walls. Now that I'm WA, and I'm re-insulating a room with 2 exterior walls, I went with R-23 Thermafiber mineral wool. Never used it before and it's really dense, you almost need a machete to cut it!

    Balloon-framed house can get a really good layer of insulation with blown-in cellulose. That said so far I've used mineral wool exclusively. I find it even less irritating to handle, I love the way it cuts for trimming and working around obstacles, and even small offcuts are dimensionally stable and totally usable, while I find small pieces of fiberglass frustrating and nearly useless. Combine with the fact that mineral wool is undamaged by water, and that vermin generally like it less than fiberglass (although I *have* known mice to nest in it) and to me it's worth the extra cost.
    That said, I've not used or handled any "new" fiberglass. Maybe it's better than it used to be.
    I've never worked with spray foam, and I am curious about it, but I have questions about its utility in these really old houses. Old wood siding and sheathing needs a bit of air, and sealing the back side of it entirely with a coat of foam doesn't seem quite right to me.

    like your old house methods, good tips those of us who renovate on balloon houses with tree trunks under the floorboards. Loving those plastic boxes for electrical, squares of poly you can install behind the box then tape down work well too. If you have the extra money you can purchase vapour barrier boxes for electrical that are shaped to fit, but i'm cheap...LOL. I always leave the acoustic sealant till last as it is one of the worse substances known to man. Oh and you forgot to add a bottle of Turps/mineral spirits to your shopping list to remove said "black goop", even with gloves it still gets on your tools and hands...those cheap painters overalls are good to to keep yourself clean

    Tuck tape is also excellent at pulling fiberglass fibers off your skin. Do not rub or try to wipe it off your skin. Back tape a layer (sticky side out) around your hand and dab the tape on your skin. Be careful around your eyebrows unless you want to draw them on for a few weeks.

    I need help. I'm doing a basement renovation. I put rigid foam against the header and sealed around each piece with spray foam. My intention was to insulate the walls then add vapour barrier. In between the floor joists I would and attach the poly to the bottom side of the rigid foam thus creating a unbroken barrier that includes the rigid foam. I then intended on adding more insulation against the rigid foam in the header.
    I was told by the inspector that this was incorrect and that I now need to punch holes in the rigid foam, add more insulation and then the vapour barrier.

    In places where Mother Nature can't make up her mind, with both chilly winters and scorching summers, the vapor barrier debate gets as mixed up as the weather! When it's cold, slapping a vapor barrier on the inside can save you from wall moisture nightmares. But when those sizzling, sticky summers hit, those same barriers might just decide to throw a pool party inside your walls-hello, mold and rot! So, all you DIY champs out there, remember to ponder the climate and your building mojo before going all-in on vapor barriers. It's a head-scratcher, folks!

      different climate zones require different approaches and even different permeability when it comes to barriers. type and location of install changes according to climate zones. always check your local codes before installing a wall assembly. Cheers!

    Could you taught me more about the basics and important tips of insulating my home please ?
    I've some pretty much all electrical and plumbing almost ready to close flooring.... I have a crawl space (vented) and a vented attic and want it all air tight to maximize insulation property and an energy efficient home.

    Thanks a lot

    How do you feel about R Max foam board in place of fiberglass batting in 2x4 walls? It appears I can get a 21.8 r value and a vapor barrier.

    All fibreglass insulation is the same. The colouration is strictly a marketing thing -- Owens/Corning uses pink to distinguish themselves with their pink panther branding, but the Johns Mansville (or other brands) white insulation is exactly the same stuff other than the colour. But yeah, mineral wool is far too expensive for the benefits it supposedly provides! The only nice thing about mineral wool is it is a little bit easier to cut without having all the wispy stranding you get with fibreglass.

    awesome! I haven't seen all of the videos in this series just yet, apologize if this is redundant. Have you added a vapor barrier to the exterior as well? Is it critical in this system to also have an exterior vapor barrier? I also live in the north, a little less north but still a heating environment, and have neither insulation or vapor barrier. Old house owner and taking notes...

      Micah Deffries vapour barriers are installed on the warm side. The exterior can be wrapped with an air barrier which prevents drafts but allows moisture to exit the wall cavity.

    The house I am going to improve shows records of being built in the 1930 the timber in the studs and else where is very hard wood would the staple gun penetrate such hard woods? and being so old whats the best way to level, plumb the studs prior to dry wall application?
    Thanks for any tips.

      Hi William. the best option is to fur out the wall with 1x4 horizontally. this allows you room to shim if it is really bad. use a laser line to get it perfect. then add vapor barrier. Cheers!

    If you are in a cold enough climate to need a poly moisture barrier, then that is not enough insulation. That is barely enough for a zone 9 or 10 house.

      More time consuming install and plastic is a better vapor barrier than paper.

    • @mikesmith2383
      @mikesmith2383 4 роки тому

      bob bray agreed plastic would do a better job. I’m guessing climate/environmental specifics would be the biggest determinations. Plastic over the unfaced seems like it would be much more time consuming. Honestly I haven’t looked at a cost difference.

    Hi Jeff, I'm insulating a similar old house while doing a kitchen remodel, in Portland, Oregon. I have some builder friends who warn me about adding the plastic to the inside of the exterior wall because if someone later adds a vapor barrier to the exterior of the house it can create an environment for dry rot and they gave me example of people that have found dry rot in a similar situation. My question is, because we heat 10 months a year but then run AC 2 months a year, and I don't plan to change the siding or move anytime soon, and the exterior has the black tar paper stuff and is pretty good condition (what I can see in the kitchen anyway), will I be better served putting the plastic on the inside or not? Seems you put plastic on the inside and are fine adding tyvek on the outside later? Is that ok for my environment? Or if I ever replace the siding do I need to put an air barrier and not a moisture barrier? I have a cripple wall and plan to finish the basement later (of course watching all your content) But I don't plan to try to connect the plastic down through the basement because I'm not planning to redo the dining, living room etc. Only the kitchen and then later the basement. Appreciate your help on the best practice in this situation. Love all your videos, best best best content always! Thanks!

      The sheetrock will compress the plastic against the framing and the screws are into the studs. This in effect provides plastic "washer" or seals between the studs and the hole that the screw makes. There should be no air movement.

    • @johnh6820
      @johnh6820 4 роки тому

      Google+ SUCKS BALLS - the worst forced social network just don’t keep missing the studs with the screws 😉. Vapour will dissipate to the outside.

      I really recommend becoming a doctor and paying someone else to do it. It's really not as much fun as he makes it out to be. We're finishing up from a forced remodel due to hurricane Florence last year. Jeff is the best teacher on the net for this stuff, I couldn't have done what I have without him, but it still sucks to be forced to do it through circumstances beyond your control. Like I said before, become a doctor.
