Good concept of a video. Youre pretty much on the money with your selections. 2001 is still a tuff decision, do you take Judd for his skill, which winning a Brownlow in that eagles midfeild speaks for itself. Or Hodge, for not only his own footy smarts, but his on and off field influence. Judd won games, Hodge won flags.
Judd is also a premiership captain. Prime Judd was a thing to behold and I would take him every day of the week over Hodge. He is 4th for me over the last 25 years - behind Ablett, Franklin and Dusty. Won a Brownlow in a good team, again in a bad team and also won a Norm. Outstanding record.
Good vid, I like the coodabeen, shoooodabeen, wooodabeen retrospectives. My favourite is Richard Tambling. He had a decent career but will always be first remembered as the AFL's version of Sam Bowie.
Obviously it's a different aspect in how these respective clubs would've gone with player retention... but man are these some wild redrafts. GWS with Neale and Bont in the same line-up would be crazy good! Now... in hind sight North probably wouldn't of drafted jhf if they knew what he was going to be like. Silver lining though, it landed NM Sheezel and Wardlaw which IMO is going to be the future Pendlebury and Selwood of the game moving forward. Bit of a hot take comparison I know but Harry and George will definitely be/are their own players. Great to have you back Daz!
Another nice one mate. Personally think that age for Rising Star shouldn't be a factor as it excludes players who aren't drafted or start playing in the AFL team until 22+ (and not that they generally tear the footy world apart), but that's just my opinion
As crows fan I’m still taking Thillthorp he’s a contested marking beast and those players don’t grow on trees. Nicks would have stuffed up Holmes development.
I agree that Thilthorpe could absolutely explode this year. Damning on Nicks that the reason to not take the objectively better for now is the lack of development. Changes needed at Crow-Land!
Although its too fresh to judge more recent draft's you can tell how much more prepared the modern player is, they're coming in essentially semi pro and even when they are thrown to the wolves like jack watts was they seemingly adapt quicker with the clubs themselves better at nurturing them.
Many poor clubs feel forced to pick the relative certainty of a ‘safe’ pick at No. 1. This tends to take them towards a well developed injury-resistant midfielder, with an inherently lower ceiling of improvement than a higher risk under developed high level talent.
That 2001 draft was amazing, if you made it that they couldn't redraft the same player the picks where amazing, don't have Hodge ohhhh lets have Judd, Bartel, Swan or Ball
@@daztalksfooty Well in the end it did Geelong well, we based a few GF's on some of the people we got in that draft. Started the odd curse.............
2018 you have to go for Zac. 2AA AFLCA and 2 high finishes in the Brownlow. I think Connor doesn't deserve the pick one spot, but Zac has done so much in such short time in the AFL. My top 3 will go 1.BUTTERS 2.WALSH 3.ROZEE
Overall I agree but the conversation around gambling Hodgey's legacy vs what Judd may have produced I'd take the known there over the unknown personally
2001: Chris Judd 2002: Brendon Goddard 2003: David Mundy 2004: Lance Franklin 2005: Scott Pendlebury 2006: Joel Selwood 2007: Patrick Dangerfield 2008: Steele Sidebottom 2009: Dustin Martin 2010: Jeremy McGovern 2011: Lachie Neale 2012: Brodie Grundy 2013: Marcus Bontempelli 2014: Christian Petracca 2015: Charlie Curnow 2016: Tom Stewart 2017: Sam Taylor 2018: Zak Butters 2019: Caleb Serong 2020: Max Holmes 2021: Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera 2022: Harry Sheezel 2023: Harley Reid
I find the narrative of Victorian media being biased is quite ridiculous. It is by far more balanced than any other state. South Australia will go with a headline like "What Rory Sloane feeds his dog" rather than report scores from games that don't involve Port or the Crows. WA isn't as bad but is well on the way. Sydney and Brisbane newspapers only report of one of their teams are winning.
As a Perth person I can confirm the wa media is extraordinarily biased, especially with regards to my eagles, just look at the harley mania at the west australian for proof. Pretty sure he was on the back page more than the entire dockers team😂
I can only speak as a Victorian though and I totally get the annoyance that non-vic supporters have over a lack of exposure. Nic Nat would've been a god in VIC if he was here
@@daztalksfooty i think u make a fair point mate. Nic nat was criminally underrated over east. So many vic based supporters who called him useless and overrated. It was always an idiotic argument. Only gawn, cox, sandilands have more all aus jumpers and he got his first as a backup ruck. At his best he was an unstoppable force of nature. Only injuries held him back
@daztalksfooty surely you take Judd. The man left hand bounced whilst side stepping some schmuk in a GF that they won. Buddy, Ablett Jnr, Judd. Top 3 modern players

I would’ve done the top 5 or 10 of every draft, but great vid Daz

Appreciate you great man and I agree on the JHF narrative entirely

Couldn't agree more mate!
It's Dusty or Fyfe. Lolz.
So either of the two I picked for their draft year?

Sandilands if you want an all-time ruckman as well is on the table!

Would take Sidebottom over Natanui every day of the week
Yeah great shout, hard to disagree
I’d have Judd over Hodge

judd > hodge
thilthorpe > holmes
I don't see a way Thrilla is better than Holmes right now. Judd all time is ranked higher and rightly so, Hawthorn would still take Hodge though
Here's the difference. Fyfe is an accumulator. Dusty didn't need anywhere near the volume of possessions to influence games.
Also worth noting that Fyfe was a jet out of the gate. Dusty was just above average the first 6 years of his career
Dusty's done both.

Yeah sorry daz say what you want about McGrath I don’t think drafting a 23 year old is the right move for the no.1 pick
That's the point of hindsight though, knowing what Stewart became, as controversial as it is, it's the way to go.
@ I still don’t think with hindsight as good as Stewart is a club would take him at. 1 over an 18 year old
Re Dempsey, anyone but Geelong OR Essendon....
Hodge before Judd. Anyday.
2018 Zac Butters or Sam Walsh? No choice, Butters every day.
Juddy is prob in the top 5 modern players, gotta be Judd.
In hindsight though, I'm not taking the risk if I know everything works out the same
@daztalksfooty surely you take Judd.
