- Today I am watching The Prince of Egypt for the first time and I was completely blown away. This movie was phenomenal, telling a Great Story with a Gorgeous Soundtrack. I love to see a Bible story come to life.
Praise be to God!!!

All of these songs are iconic 🥺
They were all beautiful, but the plagues has got to be my #1 favorite. The ending of it with the color contrast of the red and blue, the brothers singing overlapping with Ramsey walking away into the darkness and Moses looking forward was so symbolic. The whole "I loved you once." It always gives me goosebumps it's so powerful. This whole movie was amazing! Rest of my list is:

Fun fact. Today’s animated movies are made and finished in 2 years. The animation of the parting of the Red Sea took 2 years alone. Imagine the dedication it must take to animate nothing but water for 2 whole years.
And well worth it cause its 1 of the absolute best scene of the movie its so beautiful 😍
Yes, I understand there is budgeting issues when it comes to timing, but I blame the head mucky mucks who do not allow the creators to take time to look over everything including the script to perfect it. Leads to better results.
The animators had to create a BRAND NEW system to animate the parting of the Red Sea to the way they imagined it to be.... thats why it took them 2 years to animate the scene. The dedication of those animators was amazing. I wish this type of dedication was seen still today.
The animation of the 90's and 00's hell even the 50's cartoons look way better than the ish that comes out. It was smooth like butter this stuff us all janky and stiff.

God is voiced by the entire cast whispering the lines, with Moses' voice brought to the front. It shows that God is in everyone, but also represents how Moses was singled out to lead. If you listen, you can hear the female whispers very clearly. It really adds to the movie and shows the thought and care that went into it.
Or referencing how we’re all created in God’s image so therefore Moses has some likeness to Him. “God in everyone “ isn’t exactly an Abrahamic belief.
It shows that God is open to talk to anyone that wants Him in their lives, anyone who is willing to seek Him

Fun fact: When making this movie, the writers interviewed religious leaders from all the Abraham religions to under the story from different angles before adapting in. They interviewed a total of 36 religious figures.
And they asked over 600 people to get the most accurate portrayal
That’s dedication to your craft. This is probably the greatest animated movie of all time, because that’s the kind of care you don’t see anymore in movies.
Another fun fact the actor who did Moses voice also did Gods voice in the movie

This film was so carefully and respectfully done that it's been praised by Jewish, Muslim, and Christian leaders for its' scriptural accuracy, but the thing it really needs more praise for is making Moses incredibly human and relatable. He goes through denial, a nervous breakdown, runs away, gets humbled, gets his life together, and tries to do his best. I think sometimes people forget historical figures and Biblical figures are people, and this movie nails that. I know atheists who watch this and root for Moses.
I'm an atheist and it's one of my favourite movies. In my opinion one of the greatest movies ever made. You absolutely don't have to be a believer to be invested in it. I think key to this is that the movie doesn't preach but merely presents a story and allows you to make up your own mind. The characters are all so human and relatable and the film looks gorgeous. Also the soundtrack slaps!
I’m Wiccan and I love this movie! I think it touches so many different people. What a literal masterpiece.
There really is no one that this movie can’t touch. The human element on a Biblical story, showing Moses struggle with the guilt of what he must do for the Hebrew people, which the Bible itself doesn’t really touch on, really lifts the story up.
I'm vegan and I loved this movie. Very, very much indeed.

Two words, Jeffrey Katzenberg. He was the studio head for Disney during Disney's hay-day a.k.a the Disney Renaissance. Dude ends up getting mad over a failed promotion or something, flips Michael Eisner the bird and starts his own studio with Steven Spielberg and Geffen thus the S.K.G. in DreamWorks S.K.G. if you watch the early DreamWorks movies you'll see they had a distinct Disney feel. Also, Shrek was a shot at Disney, Dulark it's supposed to be mocking Disneyland.
They started caring about money more than actually making something artful.
It ain't the company, it's the people. And this movie was directed by 3 people. 3 DIFFERENT DIRECTORS! Although it IS shocking that one of them later created Mars Needs Moms
One of the amazing things about this movie is its universal appeal. People who are Jewish, Christian, and Muslim generally view it as a very good and faithful retelling of one of their most important stories. At the same time, people who are from other religions or who are atheist find it to be just a beautiful and emotionally-driven movie, even if they don't agree with its theology.
People have putted out that the main reason Christian movies fail is because they focus so much on pushing their own ideology on people and not connecting with the audience in any sort of way. Something this movie does wonderfully.

I think one of the reasons is because the movie seems to focus more about the conflict between two brothers, like y’all said it isn’t preachy which makes it a fantastic movie

"He kept the same hairstyle?" Yeah it's called the sidelock of youth, the children of Pharaoh would wear it to symbolize their connection to Horus who was depicted with the same hairstyle. You'll notice that Ramses' son has the same hair.
Also fun fact: Moses killing the overseer by accident is from Islamic tradition. Christian tradition usually has it as deliberate, while Jewish tradition has it as premeditated because the man had raped an Israelite woman. Just one small example of how difficult it would have been to make a consistent, strong story while borrowing from all three versions and how impressive it is that they pulled it off.
It is also called a Prince's Lock. Shaved off when they became King.

I love DreamWorks movies
And yet DreamWorks had to scale back on some parts from the story in the Bible because it went much harder than that.
The point was to show of how they were treated then how God had freed them. Although this movie does make you cry! God bless!

I am an a Atheist and my grandmother is very intune with her Christian spirituality but when I showed her this movie none of that mattered. We both sat there and enjoyed the film together and that is what makes this movie so special that it can connect with people of all cultures of all types of all religions or lack thereof.
U should enter that Christian spirituality because it shows that the Bible is true☺️✝️ trust me. You’ll love it

I thought all Christians grew up with this film as their childhood. It's interesting that people are discovering this and glad you react to this. You really seem to love reading the Bible and probably know a lot of verses.

It’s pretty popular but some might think it’s too dark for kids.
But this movie shows that Moses didn’t knew of his heritage and that he grew up together with the pharao which isn’t said in Exodus, so if people mention those they might be too influenced by the film. Although I guess Moses could have been close to the pharaoh but he was raised by a Princess to the the pharaohs wife so he would not be pharaoh’s son. And Moses was in desert for so long I have seen speculated it was different dynasty too when he returned.

What Pharaoh didn't pay attention to in the Red Sea scene was that the blood was everywhere but if you look at Moses the blood was not around him

Ofra Haza is the lady that sings as Moses' [Hebrew] mother. She died in the 2000s. I think she helped with Prince of Egypt's dubbing for other countries. She is also known as the "Israeli Madonna" during her time alive.
Looking through her history, she seemed like a cool person. Very talented.

7:40 Someone pointed out that what makes that image worse is the fact that in the Egyptian religion, which up until then Moses had been raised in, when your heart was weighed by Anubis after you died and found to be heavier than the peacock feather that came from the goddess of truth, then your heart was cast aside to be devoured by a monster that was at least part crocodile and therefore you would not get eternal life, so to Moses it looks like all of these babies were instantly declared 'unworthy' and cast aside to be eaten by a monster. That's what awaits this Pharoah though - his heart will be found heavy with all the lives he ended and all the misery he caused, and it will be devoured.

That's actually a really interesting thing that the movie did. That hairstyle is referred to by Egyptologists as the "sidelong of youth," because in all the ancient Egyptian reliefs they've found, it is exclusively seen on royal children and adolescents, not adults. So the fact that he’s still wearing it means that he's not recognized as an adult yet at that point in the story.

Yep! Me too. Though, to be fair, Moses is the English translation of his name. His name wasn't Moses in Hebrew, either. Rather, it was Moshe.
@@classifieduser134 It's similar in general, but quite different in the details. Stories of prophets aren't the same in the Qur'an. They're not in one place, they're not told in chronological order, but scattered throughout the Qur'an. The stories aren't told for the sake of telling the story, but they're basically used to emphasize certain themes that occur in the chapters of the Qur'an. The stories don't really give you lots of names, places, dates, ages, etc., but they do contain tons of information, packed in succinct expressions. The Qur'an is very different from the Bible in that regard. When you compare the story of Solomon and Sheba from the Qur'an to the Biblical version, they're actually extremely different. The Qur'an really paints a picture, and there's a lot of information being conveyed in between the lines, whereas the Biblical version seems pointless in comparison. The Bible has numerous verses, for example, informing the reader of how much gifts were exchanged, and how much gold they received. The Qur'an doesn't do that, because the information has no benefit. One might think that the Qur'an copies stories and changes them, or gets them wrong, but on closer examination, in my opinion at least, the Quranic stories are exceedingly superior. I'd definitely recommend reading the Qur'an, and maybe look for some exegetical videos on YT.
6:26 neat little detail is moses is actually humming that tune an earlier scene when he dumps that bag of punch onto the 2 guys below. So it sort of forshadows why he react this way here in this scene. Hes known the lullaby all these years and likely didnt know WHERE it came from
I was literally about to post the same thing! It’s one of those little details that, once you notice it, makes perfect sense in why he would suddenly remember/question everything after meeting his sister.

Even as a current athesit and growing up with no religion, this movie was my FAAAAVORITE and still is one of my big loves! The story is amazing, the animation and music is gorgeous; it's just an all around perfect movie I think people of all religions and ideals can enjoy!

@@Cinthianunezcernadas I honestly don't know how my vhs player and the tape didn't catch on FIRE with how many times I played the Prince of Egypt. The only movie i have played to death was Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron...the disk refuses to play so I had to buy a new disk XD

As a Jew, This movie was my childhood. First saw it in theaters, and then a dozen times throughout my childhood at home. Fantastic movie, so well done and researched with not just bible references, but commentary as well. They did such thorough research for the film.
They also used the Talmud and the Tanakh while making the movie. Since I’m a Christian, we’re basically family since the Jews are our older spiritual siblings.
This has always been one of my favorites. It's a version of the story that Christian, Jewish, and Muslim scholars have all agreed upon. It remains, in my opinion, the greatest animated film of all time.
I do appreciate how they gave Pharaoh motivations and emotions in this. You can see how hurt he is that Moses didn't come back to see him. And how much fear and anger he has, over the idea of causing his empire to fall. He's a good, complex villain.
You should watch Joseph: King of Dreams. It’s like a prequel to this. It’s also very well written and has great music. ^-^

You'd be surprised of how much a baby can subconsciously remember and think back to it when they get older, especially if they hear it enough
Plus, it was hinted at earlier that he does remember that song being sung to him. It was when he was sewing up the bag to drop on the priests head with the liquid. He was humming his mother's lullaby while sewing the bag up and filling it with...i wanna say that's juice from that big bowl.
Also, the voice of God is actually Moses's voice actor along with a few other actors' voices to make it more ethereal and not just one voice of God!

The Bible says that the Egyptians brought Moses' mother in to nurse him and tend to him when he was little. He would have heard her sing that song many times.
"Why does that little dude, look like the lady from Mulan?" The emotional reaction got the watch, the artistic appreciation got the like but that got the sub, "for I dearly love to laugh." Best of all worlds.
That is _all_ I see now when I see him.
The song “playing with the big boys” is technically sung by the comic relief. Think about that a comic relief song that has a lot of dark elements. Compare this to Hakuna Mataram, In Summer, and A girl worth fighting for.

But the comic relief are bad guys, so that makes it a villain song! And it’s my personal favorite, “The Plagues” being second.
19:27 That's some masterful foreshadowing right there, even for those who don't know the story of the Exodus.
Also, they just gloss over the fact that when Moses comes down from Mount Sinai with the first set of stone tablets, the Isrealites weren't waiting virtuously for him to come down; they had made a golden calf and were worshiping it and partying like there was no tomorrow.
I know, it's such a funny place to end. Like it's this big victorious moment but they were really like- "Cool, Moses. But we're gonna worship the statue."
I do like Ramses in this movie. You could see the pressure he was under when he was younger, see his love for his brother, see how much he wanted his father's approval, and see why he was stubborn because his father drilled into him the idea of never being weak. He wasn't evil, just misguided. Throughout the movie you can see their father in pictures and statues looking down on Ramses as a constant reminder of the pressure he feels.
Whenever you mention how much you love 2D animation I can't help but smile. 2D animation really is a different cut above CGI animation. Even after decades, it still holds up and you can't deny the time and effort the animators put into making them considering it took about 2 years (sometimes even more) to make these movies. I love stop motion and claymation. CGI is all well and good, but I will always say 2D animation is the best.
I wish they made more 2D animations 99% of the time theyre all good movies with cgi it's a 50/50 for me.
@@thathyena2949 it’s because everything is CGI. Most animated artists focus on the visuals because CGI can do a ton instead of focusing most of the attention on the story. They’re too busy making the film look pretty to make the story just as pretty
Someone has probably already mentioned it, but the voice of God was the same guy who voiced Moses. And the voices that echo behind God’s voice are the combined voices of those that Moses has known up until now - his sister, Ramases, wife, etc. Which the more I think of it, the deeper it is. God is very much an unknown, at least in the physical or tangible sense. So it would make sense for your world experience to fill in that void. 🤯
And it was Rameses the first's sister who found baby Moses, and his birth mother became his nurse after his sister Miriam bravely told the princess she knew someone who could nurse him.
It should also be noted that YAHWEH is meant to represent breath. YAH (inhale) WEH (exhale). Yahweh, breath of life.
Idk if you noticed or not but when he’s sewing the bag he used to dump the punch on the high priestess’s, he was humming the lullaby I assumed he thought his adoptive mother sung it to him as a baby
As a child I loved this movie. Being older now with a love for art/animation allowed me to further admire the animation of this movie. And as a Christian it brought to life a story we would read about (even if some details were left out). It's truly amazing

This ENTIRE soundtrack (including the musical score) is just immaculate, plus the beautiful animation, little details. And the Burning Bush scene has brought me to tears ever was I was little.
This movie is everything to me and will always hold a special place to my heart.

One of my favorite things about this movie is that it can be enjoyed by all audiences. Jewish people, Christians, and Muslims enjoy it because it is a beautiful representation of this Bible story, and even people who don’t follow the Bible can still find lessons to reflect on. In addition we can all enjoy the music, and animation.
A masterpiece that isn’t spoken of enough.
I'm an atheist and I still sob through this whole movie. Truly gorgeous and inspiring, a beautiful story brought perfectly to the screen.

The scene where God speaks to Moses in the cave is one of my favourite pieces of cinema ever.

Val Kilmer who played Moses also did the voice for God. He's my favorite actor. He was sick a few years back and his voice was affected. He just announced yesterday that they'll be doing a documentary about him. You'll end up seeing him in something sooner or later. A lot of the other reaction channels have done movies he was in like TOP SECRET!, TOP GUN, TOMBSTONE, and HEAT.
Ralph Fiennes: people always remember him as Voldemort... yet they don't remember him for his much eviler role in _Schindler's List._ Like... watch Schindler's List and Ralph Fiennes character will make Voldemort look like a good guy in comparison.
I'm an atheist and this is one of my favorites movies! Lost count of how many times I watched this during my childhood and THE SOUNDTRACK SLAPS HARD

The vocalist singing Deliver Us was the legendary Ofra Haza, one of the greatest female voices ever recorded. She still remains the biggest Israeli superstar twenty years after her death. She got a lot of recognition in the West world in the 80s and 90s and had many songs in the charts. (P:s she also sung Goodbye Brother and vocalized the track Cry in the movie)
Just googled her and she was STUNNING on top of all of that talent?!
so if you listen really hard at the end of the plagues and all the children's souls have been taken to God; you can hear the people crying as the screen fades to black. That was probably one of the most emotional moments in the movie for me
Grew up watching this film every year for Pesach (Passover) all time favourite 1000% loved seeing Jewish stories be shared in such a beautiful and respectful way - the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal in Hebrew as well 💞💞

@@theflickchick9850 Yes, and it's soooo good! Usually they don't do a good job translating soundtracks to Hebrew (with the exception of Lion King) but this one is phenomenal! My favorite parts are when Ofra Haza is also Moses' mother in the Hebrew, and when the choir sings the Hebrew part in When You Believe because they literally sing the same words they do in the English version but their accents are Israeli😂
Fun fact It’s actually not a whale you see in the ocean when it parts but a megladon shark (which is terrifying) you can tell by fin on the back and the way the tails facing :)

This has been my favorite movie ever since I was a little girl. I'm a Christian with Israelite heritage. It's often said that this is one if, if not the, most accurate story of Exodus. Crazy, right? And it's such an incredible masterpiece! I love how they highlight that, yes, Moses and Rameses were brothers. And then all the other beautiful messages in here, and the animation, and the music! I watch it every year during Passover.
Also, fun fact that answers your question about who the voice actor for God is: Whenever God speaks in this movie, ALL the voice actors are voicing Him (meaning the echos in the background that made it more mystical. Obviously there was one main voice actor). All of them together. I think that's incredibly beautiful.
19:28 I never noticed this in this scene when I was younger but rewatching it, Rameses son backs up and stands in the middle of the crocodiles along with the babies they killed. Basically Foreshadowing his sons death after he said what he said.

So this is one of my favorite little factoids about this movie. The main voice of God that you hear is Val Kilmer, the same actor who voices Moses. And all the whispers underneath are the whole rest of the cast, so they're all the "Voice of God"
I love that they put Hebrew lyrics in some of the songs, which makes it far more beautiful , especially in "when you believe" they put a known Hebrew blessing

It took two years to animate the parting of the Red Sea. It takes about two years to make a Disney movie. The fact that they spent two years on this scene alone is proof that there was a lot of love and passion put into this.
I remember watching the movie in theaters as a child and thinking "that's it?" at the ending, because I thought we were going to see it all the way to the end. I think is saids something about the quality of the movie when at the end you want more.

The chills I get from this movie is incredible...such emotion...I can't even describe how well done this movie is. Chills in every way, and I have to literally fight back tears of joy, love, fury, fear, and sadness. Wow....
Hands down "The Prince Of Egypt" is one of the greatest animated of the decades 🙌🏽 The film itself is one of my all time favorite movies growing-up.

this has been my favorite movie it shows the bible for what it is and shows how powerful God is and doesn't sugar coat the story for the audience this is what a movie should be this is art itself they made anger into beauty
French here, this movie is so great!! With my sister, we would sing every word of every songs when we were little and try to have all of the Egyptian gods' name right 😂 and the Mariah and Whitney duet is perfect 👌🏾
That Moses and God moment really hit me in the feels and still does to this day. Really shows how loving God truly is
I remember watching this movie in CCD when I was a kid and liking it, but I kinda forgot about it for a while. Then I watched it again as an adult, and now it's probably one of my favorite animated movies ever, and I don't even consider myself that religious. The scale, the music, the characters and the conflicts are absolutely brilliant.
If you really liked this 2D animation, Dreamworks also has The Road To El Dorado and Sinbad! They’re criminally underrated!!

Not only does this movie do a good job telling the story of Moses, but it also shows a lot of amazing details of the scenery, the Egyptian Culture and many more. I’m pagan, but this is by far my favorite story and movie
I watched this movie when I was a child in Church in Sunday School when I still went to church. I seriously enjoyed this movie as a child and I still enjoy it! I do think it’s one of the best movies of all time, in my opinion!☺️

All God's plan. And Moses' mother seeing he was a goodly child him for 3 months, God kept him quiet, of course his sister Miriam, and his brother Aaron could have helped baby sit him, and his mother became his nurse, because Pharoah's daughter had no way to nurse him, Miriam bravely approached her and said she knew someone who could nurse him.

@@itsflorence5529 Nope, the Hebrews who entered Egypt were the Hyksos who weren't slaves but conquerors and even ruled Lower Egypt as Pharaohs for a century, all of the archaeology evidence confirms this, the Hebrews were never enslaved in Egypt, that's completely mythology.
I love how they didn't try to lighten the tone of historic events, even if the audience is mostly children. Dreamworks just does a great job of making good movies for adults and kids like Shrek, The Road to El Dorado and Megamind.
This soundtrack is so underrated! I always get teary eyed when the Hebrew part comes in When You Believe.
If I can recommend another film to you, I recently watched Over the Moon on Netflix, and it is a gem of a film that paints a beautiful picture of Chinese culture. Phillipa Soo, who was Eliza in Hamilton, plays the Moon Goddes Chang'e, and she is incredible!❤
