The 13.2mm guns are way more effective than .50 cals!! You just need a couple of hits to destroy a plane and that's why I think it's so good, the J22 at 2.7 only has 2 of these and it's very effective

Yeah. Even when I play the OP Bf-109 F4, the J/A-21s are one of the few planes I actually fear. For the most part however the 109 can still outfly one

This plane has insanely good guns. It has 13mm machine guns with HE rounds that act like 20mm with the fire rate of .50 cal. But the plane itself just really isn't that good. Climbing and energy just isn't very good.

Top speed in level flight is quite decent, in a dive it's bad, climb rate is average, so it's not gonna zoom climb very well...

Don't forget the durability, never have I felt more vulnerable flying a plane like this, it's like it's made completely out of thin glass, just about one or 5 bullets can demolish the fuselage, and one or two bullets can rip the wings clean off. At some point I decided to just climb forever in RB, and ended up being the last player on my team because I was so high up no one could find me, then I dived down a bit, took out a BV238 but not before getting ripped apart by the gunners, then got ganged up on by three planes, managed to take out a Zero in a head on before the wreck crashed into me cuz my plane was less maneuverable than a plane with the combined weight of a BV238 and a B-29 with a 10 ton bomb
they shoot faster than 50's they fire at 1080 rpm and the weight of the bullets is almost 50% higher

The only issue i really have against this plane is that it has a weird tendency to be veru tanky, i've hit one of this with over 2/3 37mm rounds and the most i've been able to do is set it on fire in the engine, thats all, or rip a piece of wing, this things are cannon sponges fr
I literally had to have at least 5 seconds of gun time in my F2A-3 with four .50 cals to set the engine on fire. Apparently the J21 was known to be a rugged aircraft.
Not really, youre just hitting nothing. Literally, ALL the vital components are right in the center, behind the pilot. One strafe kills it, you're just either missing it by shooting to far behind so it falls through the empty space or hitting the wing structure.
I got both wings shot off and flew back to base and landed
once you get on its tail the engine is darn easy to hit though, and without the engine you can juat stay above it and strafe it and it can't do anything.

Personally used it and realised its a 190 with hmgs but it doesnt lower the damage. The thing that makes it op is the seal clubber squads dominating 2.7 and onwards. Seriously the maneouverability disadvantage doesnt mean shit when they have 4 of them chasing you.
if you're playing arcade it's actually maneuvrable enough to dogfight 1v1 against a lot of planes at its BR. especially the americans and germans.

Agreed, but if you can dodge the bullets (which most planes can) you've already won, this thing can't turn, climb or retain energy for shit, almost every plane has an upperhand against this thing in basically every field, it's that bad, and if you can land one bullet, congrats, you've basically dealt what would be a critical hit in most planes, but is just a normal hit in this one, you'll destroy it's modules with one bullet, crit this thing? It might as well be dead
In arcade it's not a myth. There it's literally op. Mostly because you can just climb a little bit, fly into a whole bunch of enemies, kill all of them in seconds, fly away and repeat.

I remember recently a buddy and I took out a couple zeroes (also in a squad) despite starting at an energy disadvantage and from rear aspect. When played with a reliable team around you, this plane is unstoppable. The 13,2 mm machineguns are closer in destructive power to the MG151 than the M2, and the 20 mm cannon is quite redundant, in my opinion.

@@bentaylor1930 its a decent plane, as long as you have the flares and the aim 9s are really helpful. stock grind may be somewhat annoying, because the harrier itsself is kinda shit, dumps a lot of speed and doesnt turn well. you have to climb to altitude and bnz.

its blatantly op im a decent air rb pilot and I can get aces in it fine but just like the f82 you must swarm it to win and never head on Its one of the most noob-friendly aircraft and do i think it is overpowered its low tier what do you expect from pilots at this br the skill of players are the reasons that its so strong @Sad seal and it completely ruins new players experience and if your below it you cant do much unless the j21 player is not very good at the game or your in a fockehh wulf.

@@shatteredskies8292 I've never had a problem with the j21 and f82 too the f82 is bad because of the fear factor the j21 for a skilled player is also feared because of the fear factor but back to the point I agree with you but I would still advocate a bump to 3.7 as the other j21s perform fine at 3.7 but do I think its op? no their some aircraft that cant perform against the j21 and some blatantly under tiered planes like the yak7b which doul go to 3.0 but I'm not gonna complain too much about it because well....i like it same goes for the f1 these aircraft both can easily counter the j21 but some other aircraft just can't its not like the aircraft that cant counter it are bad their characteristics make it hard to counter the j21 in a uptier the j21 can still perform but some aircraft shouldn't have to meet the j21
Or a certain 109......the infamous F-4.......which somehow perserveres against superior fighters. No not necessarily looking at the J-21, but rather at the US fighters.
The problem is that it's a rather easy aircraft to fly, and fight, provided you know about energy tactics.
A lot of the problem in the OP discussions is that we often lack tools to assess relative performance beyond the barebones info that Gajin gives us.
You can look at the Tool "Plane compare" for IL-2 1946 (including version for HSFX 7 and later mods=HSFX6 had completely remade improved FMs.) if you want to see what I mean, it shows the climb performance at different speeds and altitudes, as well as the turn performance at various speeds.
Which allows you to formulate various tactics, aka in which speed bands various aircraft's strengths are.
So a P-40E outturns a 109 F-4 at 300-320km/h....while the 109 Outturns it at 240-270 km/h, without combat flaps.
But if you look at combat flaps that reverses, the P-40E rules up to 320 km/h, while the 109 outturns it above it.
However that is not the full picture either, as you need to take into account that the 109 has more effective flaps, fowler flaps vs. split flaps on the P-40 (and even the FW-190). The latter are less effective and cause a lot more drag for the lift.)
Now a 109 F-4 outturns as P-47D at every speed......bar those above 400 km/h. (Technically those above 380-ish, but at 400 there is a marked advantage)
Unless the P-47 Drops combat flaps, then it turns better than the 109 from 340-400 km/h. Question is do you really want to, as those speeds are very close to the vmax of the flaps and prolonged turning with the P-47 is not a good idea.
As you can see with just this tool one can formulate ways of dealing with certain enemies, but since we haven't got that for most Aircraft in WT that aren't part of IL-2 1946+Mods that makes certain aircraft very hard to fight, as we can't just go and do a testflight and test it in combat ourselves, unless we are close enough in unlocked planes.
That what leads to most of the OP calls, well that and BR which undertiers certain aircraft.
A6M2-N back in the day was lit. Still turns like a zero, has 2x20mm I would like to see you fly it out.
i have found out that this plane turns really well at high speed. the push propeller makes it great for head on fights since the engine is in the back and not the front, and the cannons that are in the middle are great for taking down bombers they remind me of the p51 cannons

Like a lot of others said, It's probably Arcade Battle that gets this plane a lot of Hate, much like the BF109s do. In realistic I see no issues with it as its more balanced. In Arcade Sweden planes are are interesting. It can be best summed up as: Sweden planes play like you want to play American planes. Few American pilots will adhere to the Boom and Zoom and speed that keeps them safe. Swedish planes will let you get away with diving into the swarm and duking it out in the ball. More often than not you will clean house in Arcade mode.
The best example I can give in terms of raw American power is the A-36, F-82, and P38J (the one with the gun pod). All three of those planes in the American tree at their respective tiers give you a feeling of, "if its in the pip, it dies with a tap." The J21 series and even the J22B feels like that to me. The F82, and A36 are sluggish, if caught in a turn fight you are dead. The J21 series can turn and has that same raw power. This makes stringing together kills in Arcade very easy. Sweden also gets paired against Allied most of the time as well, I believe this to be wrong. Sweden for balancing reasons should probably be on the Allied side the majority of the time...at least in Arcade mode. Going up against BF109s and the J's from Sweden is a bit to much of a power swing to Axis if you ask me.
unlocked this plane yesterday, absolutely love it. Do have to be careful with energy though.
I unlocked it a few days ago and it has given me as much money as playing bombers, but by actually helping the team
Only thing that catches me off guard is probably stall performance sometimes I may try to energy trap one and I get amazed how the 21 is able to push its nose up after a few turns or so

The J21 used to confound me. Most of my experience is in arcade, and in the Fw-190 Antons at 4.0-5.3, so I know how the Mustangs feel. When you try to boom a J21 they simply do a hard turn and duck away from your guns, and when you try to extend away by zooming, they point their nose at your ass and snipe you from a mile away with their tight-set laser guns. Their poor energy retention works in their favor because it means they're constantly at their "corner" speed, where they can make the tightest turn possible, and their guns' accuracy and range lets them command airspace even if they can't be physically close to their enemies - that's what makes them hard to deal with. Maybe arcade is just broken though.
This plane is capable of outturning pretty much anything at speed and is always above the enemy. It is near impossible to deal with.

Spit what are your opinions on the Yak-15P and would you say that it is 6.0 capable?
I think the thing with this plane is that even if u bnz/energy fight it, if it can point its nose up at you for just a split second, it can rip rip wings from over 1km with little to no problem. It can also just enter AFs and kill ppl landed without any problem since its descently fast, sturdy, and has weapond that just vaporize anything.
That said, indeed it is easy to out fight it in something like a yak if it doesnt vaporize you instantly from 1.2km bellow while you try to get in a position in which you wont need to head on it

I have been using the Swedish tree recently and I can say this plane is stupid overpowered, I’m almost always on top of my team’s leaderboard.
Now a plane that was over powered when it was released was the S.O.8000 Narval, first game, 6 kills, 9 planes researched due to the x5 rp boost from the 5 year anniversary of war thunder
i bought the test drive for it, 9 games - 21 kills, very good plane

There's my short review of the plane via + and - :

Excelent diving acceleration and speed
Low drag design->
Basically no compresion in a dive (and it has an effective G-suit to combat overload), so it outmaneouvers every enemy when at high speed
Extremely powerful nose mounted armament (6x mg 151) and good ammo count
Can fly with just one wing
Gets an airspawn (which allows it to get to a firing range of some bombers)

Bad climb rate, you won't get higher than any enemy bomber
Bad maneuverability in low to mid speeds
Fragile landing gear (challenging landing and even takeoff)
Edit-i forgot: it's not really fast in a straight line

As someone who just spent so many days grinding there for Operation W.I.N.T.E.R., you see this thing and all of its variants in Arcade quite a lot. The firepower is amazing thanks especially to the 20mm cannons, and the performance is greatly enhanced due to the nature of Air AB. Now, I run a full American 4.0 lineup with all three P-47Ds, the P-51C, the P-61C, and an SB2C for shits and giggles. This lineup wrecks, absolute seal-clubber. That said, these planes are some of my priority targets. They can typically out-maneuver me if I didn't engage them from a dive at high speed, and they need very little time on target to shred any of my planes. They're not particularly "overpowered" even in that game mode, and especially not in Air RB, but they have advantages that can prove very useful if they're not dealt with quickly.
how do you know what planes best with energy retention and what not?
I used this plane to grind half of the event whenever I needed lots of kills. The absolute amount of planes that go headon, even with the energy advantage is insane. It isn't even that good of a plane - it can't climb at all, the WEP is useful for about 20 seconds and it turns and retains energy about average at best. Whenever I play against it, in 109s, 190s, yaks, p51s, zeros, etc I never find any way to lose in a fight against it. If you don't fly in front of the guns of this plane you should never lose in a 1v1. I am utterly confused
Kinda similar to my experience with the Airacobra, for some reason there's 109s that charge me on head on even tho I have .50 cals and a damn 37mm cannon, people need to understand to NEVER head on aircraft with heavy weapons
@@julianbelkan2384 the 37mm moves at around 600 meters per second, and the Brownings at around 800. The 37mm is shit and not a threat unless you stall
you don't overheat on WEP for quite a long while with 75% prop pitch, so not a really compelling argument for me. Retains energy better than the 109 as well, so meh. Yeah it can't climb.

@@stickmouse5002 usually yeah, you have to fire the 37mm at 500 meters or less in order to land a hit, if you try to let's say 800 meters, it's obvious you're probably won't hit anything unless it is a bomber flying in a straight line
I love this plane paired with the a-2 and the A21, if you can aim with it you can get 10 kills and respawn in an almost identical plane. On the other hand, if you make 1 bad maneuver your as good as dead since you get out-turned. Sometimes I even like to hop in arcade with this plane since it gets that extra power it needs to be op, so maybe if your an arcade player this thing is op, but even then it still suffers from the same issues.

I agree one month earlier I thought it's COMPLETLY overpower, but after watching some tutorials how to fly right I'm a monster in the skies. Last week there was a fight I killed 12 planes with two Bf and one Fw 190 in 4.0 and the J21-A is now a cutie to me 😅
This is a big tip for j21 pilots because due to this, has gotten me a few extra kills and saved me quite a lot of times. Always use you're combat flaps if you most certainly have to dogfight because you cannot outrun many planes most of the time. I managed to get a 5 kill game in this thing with a 500%sl booster on. I would have died and our team would have lost (I was the last guy) if it wasn't for my combat flaps.
Aside from imports, for most of the WWII period Sweden was stuck with very limited access to good foreign engines and had to make do with what we could get our hands on. Access to license production etc. was somewhat limited until the early post-war era.

I play the J21 alot and have a k/d of 3-1 which on paper seems op however there are a few things I've noticed.
If a competent player gets above me I'm dead, my only hope is to dive to the deck as I'm dodging and hope for a teammate to save me.
If I can out altitude the enemy team I'll get 5 kills or so, once I'm up high I'm unbeatable.
Also most my kills are of players fighting other players or who are not paying attention to me. This thing is a cleanup machine and thrives in chaos. In a fair one on one as long as you avoid headons (which most players don't or don't know how to do well) this thing suffers.

I think it's the fact that a couple of machine guns is doing more damage than 2 mg151/20s. They work even better than 8x .50 cals on a p-47. And then add the one shot single 20mm cannon to that and it becomes a bit ridiculous. Even a single 151 requires a good 10-15 rounds to actually kill something.
There's something a bit strange looking about pusher props in my opinion
The aerodynamic concept is strange. You would imagine having the prop out in clean air would be much better than having it in the turbulent wake of the fuselage
This is pretty much my experience flying this plane as well, people go head on, gets torn to pieces and then complain about it being OP... Flying against it though, there's another thing I want to bring up rather than the firepower: It can be kinda difficult to hit. I dunno if it's the size or the unorthodox design that throws my aim off a bit or maybe a bit of both but my experience is that it's one of the planes I have the most difficulty reliably hitting, even if I manage to stay behind it in a more nimble plane.
If I'm not mistaken there is a J21 and J22, and in arcade, they get under-tiered all the time for their BR. In arcade they are absolutely insane at boom and zoom. Better energy retention than the p38.
The cannon stang is my favorite plane I have a 3 to 1 KD with just about 300 kills thus far. I love that thing as I can uptier to 6.7 and kill P51Hs and F80s in that thing (when I use the British premium variant of it with the current matchmaker, the British variant btw is EPIC, its got the same be but moved up to rank 3 so you can use it to grind events and it has a 780% SL (w/ premium) reward rate which makes it my go-to grinding aircraft).
Now onto my point, the p51 CAN turn fight you just need to use your flaps and manage your throttle to do so. However there are things you cannot out turn, thus far they include: all zeros, Yak 3s, J21As. Other than that it can definitely turn fight so I wouldn't say it's a "fat aircraft that ate too many cheeseburgers by any means".
in arcade i would say its op, the turning rate, armement and climb rate/ speed are all good, and not many planes have that, and certainly none at that br.
Even 2 years later its a3 varient is incredibly potent at 4.3 and i can relaibly keep a close to 2 kdr (all my other planes have a 1kdr or lower)
Destroying fw-190s in head ons with this is the best feeling ever

Tbh I've never felt threatened by a J-21. You should try the C.205 serie 3 instead, that one really is a hidden gem

The thing with the J-21 is (or at least was) that it held energy much better and could even outturn planes like Yak-3s in turnfights. I would also say that the armament was much stronger when it was introduced, one-hitting most enemys when it got just one shot in and setting deadly fires many times. I played soviets mainly when it first appeared in ARB and those J-21s were putting out fires on a regular basis, in fact I started to just spray them down when they were on fire because they seemed to put them out every time. So I think this is the reason people (and me) think it is too good for it's BR
It's because the Akan guns are insanely effective, all of them, the mg's and canons, they remind me of the days when american .50cals were broken and OP before they nerfed them. I never thought the performance of the swedish planes was OP, only the Akans.
Definitely agree with the sentiment on what makes planes powerful. People say the C.205 without the 20mm's is very bad, but I find it absolutely excellent plane because of its amazing acceleration and climb, and competent maneuverability. Being able to guarantee hits with bad guns is leaps and bounds better than it being difficult to aim with good guns. Likewise, I hate the one with 20mm's because it's heavier and at a higher BR where it can't pull as many tricks as the other one.

It's definately a good trainer to improve one's evasive flying and reversal skill and has to be flown more with a self-baiting mindset - a decent team comes in handy here additionally. It is definately not a good beginner plane (despite the 13.7mm explosive rounds which I just call The Swedish Death Lasers) -but if you seek a little challenge this one is just perfect! I recommend using MEC with a prop pitch setting of 75%-80% (max) and 100% radiators to avoid overheating. I found this to have a neglectable impact on performance, if any. It still climbs miserably and is easy to counter in a dive (with that hilarious rip speed of 650kp/h - just lure enemy J21's with you and most of the time they die), so I totally agree with you that this plane is in no way OP as long as you know how to exploit its weaknesses.

just keep your speed up and fight mostly in the vertical to preserve energy. early jets are capable of reaching very high speeds, but accelerate poorly, so hold on to your energy.

Props are pretty boaring, and all the jets I have make me loose sl on a normal day, or get about 10k on a good day.
I also don't have a premium account.
jets have poor sl multiplier, so, yeah.....
The good guns make it extremely hard to boom and zoom as it can deflection shot for days by spraying in the general direction. It's not much of a threat if you can sit behind it, but that's not what every plane can do.

The J21's reputation for being overpowered comes from when it was first introduced to the game at 3.0.
The main problem with this plane are all these things combined:
1) It's fast enough to catch anything that isn't american. And if it can't outrun it, it can still stay on it for long enough to finish it.
2) It's guns can shred anything in less then a second, and any noob can use them well.
3) It can outturn anything that isn't a straight up turnfighter (spit, zero)
4) it's climb isn't nearly as bad as you described, it's actually pretty decent.
In conclusion: if you see it in a german plane, it's better to just j out or try to run as far as possible, cause you ain't beating this thing, if you're in anything else, then you have 1 slight advantage in whatever your plane is known for, but it can do everything else much better than you, and it's just slightly weaker in whatever you're good at.
Honestly, i think if you changed it's br to 3.7 or 4.0, it would be fine, but the fact that this thing can meet 2.3s is just disgusting.
Also the reason the russian 20mms set things on fire a lot is because they shoot very quickly, and their main ammunition is fragmentation incendiary.
it's weird because for arcade it's 4.0 and it performs great and I use it with my 6.7 jets and it still is competitive against superprops, though it's climb rate is pretty bad in my experience, it's mainly the energy retention since once you pull up you lose tons of speed.
So that's why I keep seeing those in my mig 3... Seriously I don't know how to dogfight and have to meet this abomination...
@@HMSNeptun just don't go head on and attack from above, also if you try to stall them out remember they will stall far before you do. And turnfight with them, after a few min you will have a shot on them
@@Darek225Army No, if you turnfight the J21 in a mig 3 you will lose, and altitude wont help, since the j21 can just pull up his nose, headon and kill you, before you get a chance to dodge.
In arcade it's at higher br, because it's way more op, and just generaly performs better to almost every stock super prop, but once you get full upgrades in a 5.0+ plane it's not that bad anymore, so in arcade i think it should be 4.3.
@@Darek225Army the problem is that I do not know how to do anything. I don't know how to turn fight, I don't know how to boom and zoom, I do not know what to do if I see an enemy. I do not know how to get out of a head on without letting the enemy get behind me. Yet I got matched with people who know what they are doing every single game.

i'm not quite sure, why you feel this way but the vertical energy retention is actually pretty good in this thing.
And though it dosen't compare to a spitfire, the turnrate is competetive and more importantly consistent over a wide speed range. Then since this plane has excellent stall characterisics, you cn quite well exploit yor thighter turn radius if you fly this thing vertically focused.
ANd since at such a low br it's meta to dogfight at ant knee height it's easy to exploit it's strengths and mitigate it's meh climbrate and even worse top speed.

In My Arrogant Opinion the A6M2-N codenamed "rufe" which is basically a Zero with floats attached, is just as strong as a zero IMAO, you just need to break the floats off on the runway to get rid of the extra weight that is the floats
