You and my big brother. I grew up mostly in the 90s, college in the 00s, but it was still on. It didn't go off the air until I graduated college in 2005 or maybe the year afterwards.
I was born in 98 and my uncle has cassette recorded the shows and I remember he would play it for me because as a 3 year old I dance to 70s to 80s funk music and break dance at age 10
It's strange that the intros from the 1970s make me feel like crying. I was born in 99 but somehow I feel a connection to that era, like it's nostalgic even to someone who wasn't around at that time!
You feel a connection because that's when dancing was an art form. Just watching the dancing tells a story. Unlike today, where every woman pretty much does the same move (twerk) bending over, and the guy with his hand on her hips/waist, practically dry humping (and calling it dance). You have an appreciation for real dancing and movement to the rhythm. I was born in 79, yet feel a connection to this more than 90s and beyond.
I was shocked about the tragic death of longtime creator of "Soul Train" Don Cornelius. After 35 seasons, I wish the show could be bringing it back on syndicated TV after a 2006 final goodbye. My favorite moment on the show was when Don made a plan to put rap, dance, and R&B to the next level in the late 80s, and I saw a first rap performance by LL Cool J. After he left the show in 1993, there were a lot of changes including the new host idea and the scribble board, but the Soul Train line was a phenomenon. I was watching Charlie's Angels The Movie and there was a scene where Cameron Diaz was doing the Soul Train line dancing to the song "Baby Got Back." That was so hilarious. I missed the show very much and my hearts go out to Don's family and friends. And as he said for the final time in his famous quote: "I'm Don Cornelius. And as always in part, we wish you Love, Peace, and Sooooooooulllllll! My favorite Soul Train theme songs was "Soul Train's a Comin'" by O'Bryan, "TSOP '87" and "TSOP '89" by George Duke and from the 1987-1989 seasons and the 1989-1993 seasons, "Know You Like To Dance" by Naughty by Nature and from the 1993-2006 seasons and "TSOP 2000" from 1999 to 2006 by Dr. Freeze.
"SOUL TRAIN, television's longest-running, first-run, nationally syndicated music program in television history, and the hippest trip in America. 60 non-stop minutes across the tracks in your mind into the exciting world of soul."
Soul Train is a huge part of me. I remember watching it with my older brother and older sisters. Those days were so fantastic! My older siblings were born in the 1970s, I was born in the 80s and raised in the 1990s. And I am not ashamed of it. When I was a little kid, I loved the train dance. When I was in my teens, I just wanted to get in there and dance with those girls. Such a great time that was. Just dancing and enjoying the music without a care in the world
Yep I was born in 1970 and remember alot of these intros nobody was hating like they are now all thru the 90s now everyone is fighting and full of hate it's sad
If you went to county jail in Dallas Texas anytime in the 90s you've seen soul train in there. 😂 No matter what color you are it was mandatory 😂😂😂 soulllllll train Shout out to all my Homies in Lou Steritt justice center 😂
I remember when “Soul Train” started in Chicago in 1970. It started in a small studio in the Board of Trade Building in the south Loop. They used the music from the first intro shown here, but they used video of an actual train. I think it was in 1972 when Cornelius took the show to Los Angeles and put it into syndication.
It was a little depressing to see the visionary in these clips in his prime and at the end showing his age. RIP Don Cornelious...and THANK YOU for the 'Hippest trip in America!' I wish we had it back right now...
I am South Korean but it reminds me one Saturday afternoon in 1977 when I was 10 watching Soul Train on AFKN (American Force’s Korean Network) while my dad was having a shower after work..
Loved watching Soul Train every Saturday afternoon right after the morning cartoons!! In Houston, it came on KHTV 39 (now KIAH - CW 39) and of course I’d catch it on WGN America both then Tribune owned (now Nexstar) Miss those days!! RIP Don Cornelius!!!
@@ladiiblue2u634 We had WGN on cable here in L.A.! My cousins would catch it twice while we were watching cartoons (9am Pacific on WGN and again at 11am on KTLA)
Supposedly when MFSB released the single version of "The Sound of Philadelphia," Don Cornelius refused to let the Three Degrees sing the "Soul Train" line on it. or make any references to the show. He later admitted that that was not one of his better decisions. The Three Degrees got the last laugh, though; their version with the "Soul Train" chorus ended up on one of their albums.
I discovered the man who says, "Souuuuul Train" in the intro, Joe Cobb, owns a gourmet popcorn business in the town I live in. I went yesterday to get some popcorn and meet him but he's only there on weekends. I bought popcorn anyway but am going back soon to meet this legend.
Since the Los Angeles Metro is going to introduce a new light rail line serving the Crenshaw/Inglewood/LAX/South Bay areas of SoCal, they should introduce the Soul Train whistle on their trains. That'll get people's attention when the train crosses the intersections along the route.
Every Saturday at 1 pm Caribbean time we'd hurry with our chores as teens to look at Soul Train and wished could go to the USA to go on the dance show .
I don't know what year he stopped but I know when we stopped going to baby sitter house about 91/92, I stopped watching.. Cuz I was at home, in my own bed and not waking up before noon to do anything!..

I like how Silk Sonic did one of their songs on the 2021 BET awards on the Soul Train background. Their album really brought back the old 70's music that you would have seen Saturday morning back in the early 70's. Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak made it work.
Thank you for this! I distinctly remember, growing up, the third version with the funky train, then the tunnel, then the disco ball. Wow, such memories.
Ironic how the Soul Train tagline was "The Hippest Trip In America", when there were folks around the world watching the show! Didn't matter if it was South Africa, UK or Japan; people were jammin'! I seriously say they should re-air the show from start to finish. Lots of good music I missed out on (but also grew up on) as I was born in 1984
I recall when it was a local show airing on its original TV station-WCIU-TV Chicago (Channel 26) in black and white as WCIU didn't become an all color TV station until 1973(!)
Great memories. What I am constantly amazed at is that neither Soul Train nor American Bandstand were exclusively black nor white. The Train had white kids and AB had black kids. And all enjoyed the show regardless. I have watched my share of Soul Train back in the day. Once Don Cornelius gave up the hosting duties, that was it for me. Also, the inclusion of rap, which DC was staunchly against, caused him to really step back from the show. And as the show got raunchier with lyrics and fashion, Don was increasingly uninterested.
I was born in 83 so I missed Soul Train in its heyday. I didn't start watching regularly until around 94, 95, couple years after Don left. I stopped watching a couple years into Shemar Moore's run. I still have no idea who tf that last guy was, lol
I qiut watching it when Don Cornelius stopped hosting it. The music went downhill, as far as I'm concerned hasn't stopped sliding. People stopped singing, and can't produce their own music. They're all copycats.😒😒

Same. No idea why I felt compelled to find this right now. I mean, all I ever saw back then was the intro.
@DeanCoronado, Me too!
When I was a kid the soul Train was on at night. I don't remember it conflicting with my cartoons.
R.I.P. Leo Sullivan. He was the animator who designed the first intro.

As a white teenager in Canada in the 90s, Soul Train was really the only program showcasing great music.
The best memory was the 80's intro with O'Bryan singing.
That’s my favorite!!
Not for me It was the one with the Sounds of Philadelphia. That was my favorite. The second one they played
I liked that one best. I liked the “Get on board” intro also

I remember being 5 back in 2000 at the babysitters and being scared of this intro. Lol.
Maybe it's because you feel like you missed out. Me personally I most remember the theme song from the mid 80s, beginning at 8:01.
