@@TOTHEPOINTTUTORIALS I keep getting "unknown file" message when trying to import. It's with all file types except .jpg and .tiff stills. Anyone out there have answer to this? I've tried importing .mov . m4v .dv but keep getting the same "unknown file" message. Argh
@@TOTHEPOINTTUTORIALS I know it's 3yrs old but I needed the basics down before I start in Editorial at my studio xD But damn...thanks for this haha I'm going to have it on repeat so I get those hot keys down
I can't understand for the life of me why no one else could break down timeline work in AVID as easily as you just did. Kudos, you're an exceptional human.
Of all the NLEs out there, Avid has alluded me the most due to it's non-standard workflow. In 6 minutes this video did more to get me started on it than everything Avid has put out themselves. You should be proud. I'll be subscribing and checking out your content going forward. Thank you!
Just so you appreciate how great this is, I learned the Avid in 1996 and would batch digitize my Hi8 video tapes in real time. And we would let the effects render overnight because they took so long. And it still saved us days of editing. Days!
Coming from Premiere, Avid can be a bit of a struggle to learn. This tutorial is HUGELY beneficial to get off the ground running in literally seconds. Great stuff!
@@roamlikekane As an editor, the more programs you know the more opportunities you open yourself to. Also, I've learned that most freelance gigs in the entertainment industry require Avid knowledge
I'm glad that I found this channel. you taught me what hours of paid tutorials can't. Please post more tuts about avid coz I will be going to a film school after 6 months, I need to be prepared for that.
Literally I worked in on a proper TV show using avid and script synce and this video taught me how to edit on Avid in under three minutes and I spent five months on that job, 🤣
another thing about avid I would highly suggest is organization. Create files for everything. Camera originals. Transcoded dailies, dailies by scene, audio, efc
Thanks for posting. Good tutorial. Personally, I can't understand how people can be creative with a tool like this. But I guess it could be that I am just not used to it. FCPX, Vegas, and Davinci feel so much more conducive to creative play with video and audio than this very calculated old tool.
Wow great and to the point tutorial. Any idea if you can run Media Composer First off line? I'm planing on editing footage on a laptop off grid with no internet!
I just turned off my wi-fi and it launched without issue. So, it will! I'd suggest downloading and launching while you are still on wi-fi. It will probably need to launch at least once so it knows your laptop is authorized. After that, you can edit all you please in the middle of nowhere!
Now, if we can just get with Avid and work on those export times... I did a test in MC First and it took almost 4 minutes to export 1 minute. I'm not asking for full, quicktime references to throw into media encoder, but maybe give us control over how many passes the renders do.
How to publish from IN mark till OUT mark (not all the timeline) and how to save place in the local drive by zipping? I have only the default profile without the possibility to control the details.THANKS!!!
I am following your steps but it seems that the menu sequencing is not the same in the Avid composer I have. Mine is a Windows version 8.9.2. When the footage file is imported for the first time, then it goes to a separate window so I cannot import it for the second time? This Avid composer seems to be a pain from its download to workflow....very confusing and user-unfriendly software!
Can anybody help me? I was trying to edit some MOV file but there appears the problem "Assertion failed: normalCaching II smallChaching File: ..\src\filesys\CoreWinFileLocator, Line: 1378" I don't know what to do with it. I edit fiew other MOV files and everything was ok.
For anyone else having this issue, try importing the files instead of linking. By importing, you are basically transcoding the clip into a file that can easily be read by Avid.
I keep getting "unknown file" message when trying to import. It's with all file types except .jpg and .tiff stills. Anyone out there have answer to this? I've tried importing .mov . m4v .dv but keep getting the same "unknown file" message. Argh
Is AVID media Composer | First free at a university without any permission from AVID? Can I use the software at my Video Editing Class without any permission or payment?
This is tits. I'm a Pro Tools guru and can fly through that software like I'm programming VBA into Excel (that's fast as fuck), but know next to nothing about Media Composer. Weird, eh? Very helpful. I mean, I'll still read the manual, but this is almost perfect.
Just spent 3 hours to install on MAC, (not compatible). Spent 4 hours to install on PC, now have trouble because "activated". I wish they can hire at least one software developer to fix it. Still in process...
You have to "Patch" (direct) the source clip tracks to the tracks on the timeline where you want them to go. If you didn't move them down, it would have overwritten the audio on tracks 1 and 2.
One has to save the title, then patch a video track and select a region in the timeline, then import the title.... OMG...... with all due respect to the Avid system, its just a drag and drop in Final Cut Pro X .... :)
Jesus Christ this programs terrible I did a job interview once this guy was raving on about it, premieres well better, and you have more control and have more plugins to your disposal and control with protools, Ide use protools to mix your audio then export out import video and audio into premiere do everything in there its well easier and much more user friendly. maybe it works well with live television broadcast that's may be why he raved on about it, but using it and looking at this tutorial is stupid, why input and not import its just trying to be slightly different so its not the same as other video editors but all it does is makes the simpler tasks harder which in the end takes more time. That's why it has a - + X in the top right where the - [ ] X should be.
Learned so much more about Avid Media Composer in this small video than all the other long-drawn out videos on UA-cam, thank you!
Thanks! We strive to make tutorials that are straight and to the point! Check out our other videos to learn more about Media Composer.

Also agree. Great tutorial. If only the conglomerate that is AVID had such support available to us all

I left AVID many many years ago. Jumping back in to go after union editing jobs. Appreciated this quick start tutorial!
Not gonna lie, I was using Linkedin Learning to learn all about Avid, and here in 7 minutes i'm literally ready to go. Thank you dude, thank you!!
Wow my video prof taught exactly what you did in 6 minutes, but in 2 separate 2 hour classes. Thank you!

This is what I call an efficient, straight-to-the-point tutorial. Keep em' coming!
Thank you! Finally to the point video.
Cant express how grateful I am - this is just awesome. Other hour-long tutorials dont explain nearly as much. THANK YOU!

Short, basic and to the point! Thanks.
Didn't know Avid had a free version all this time. That's really generous of them!
this a proper crash course. well done. thank you
Great tutorial. Detailed enough to be helpful but not overwhelming.
Thank you for your tutorials! Would you have a video explaning how to suppress old Avid projects with the new version, by any chance?
Have a nice day!
Great video, will be checking out your others too as i am starting out in video editing
Great video
I just got Media Composer and was so daunted by the UI but you've cleared up so much 🤘

Much more advanced than iMovie but I think thanks to you I'll get the hang of it. Thanks so much!
another thing about avid I would highly suggest is organization. Create files for everything.
Camera originals. Transcoded dailies, dailies by scene, audio, efc
I already like your "To the point video", but are you using an older Avid Media Composer? I'm in school 2021 and a few things look different.
Thanks for posting. Good tutorial. Personally, I can't understand how people can be creative with a tool like this. But I guess it could be that I am just not used to it. FCPX, Vegas, and Davinci feel so much more conducive to creative play with video and audio than this very calculated old tool.
i feel you, does not beat fcpX in many ways for creatives but does so when it comes to workflows and sharing.
this channel is awesome. Thanks mate Ive learnt so much with this video
Superb !
Thank you! This was really to the point. I made my first little movie in Avid with this.
Thanks, Sean. Well done!

Awesome and thanks for the response. Going to try that. Can't go wrong for a free editor especially from AVID!
Avid is super cool but Imma be sticking to premiere pro for a few more years at least!
this is what i want thank very much
Short and sweeeet.
Thanks.
good start,Thank u very much.
is FIRST enough to learn avid or do you need the full version to collapse and waveform sync and other things?
Quick and to the the point.. No long stories! Thanks, it's what most people need. Subscribed

i can't import the mp4 files? it keeps on giving me an error saying assertion failed- normal caching bla bla bla
Avid is the parent company of media composer and protools these are variations that are under Avid. Is this correct?

Hi, I bought the software, but i cant access it at all, its very complicated

It is Free for everyone, no matter what.

Nothing happens when i press okay at the publish window, why is this?
Is this run on windows?
We were using the Mac version in the tutorial, but this software will also run on Windows.
can you explain with a lil more detail or depth as to what exactly you are doing at 4:35?

But thanks, downloaded the Media Composer First, this tutorial is really to the point and handy.
Why do big people use avid over premier how is it better
Powerful software but the GUI idk about that
Hold on hold on. What's A1 and A2?
A1 and A2 are short hand for Audio Track 1 and Audio Track 2. The Video tracks are named V1, V2, etc. Thanks for the question!
exporting dosent work. Avid media composer is stuck at "preparing to export"
Anyone know why?
Yeah. Avid exports movies as QuickTime movies so you'll need this installed on your machine. Even if it's a PC.
