A GoPro is a pretty useful tool. The Hero 7 Black is a great price now that the Hero 8 is out. Be sure to get the Black version of whatever you get. There is an affiliate link in the video description to the Hero 7 Black on Amazon!👊🏼
The go pro is great for this kind of filming. It’s discreet enough to keep out of site if your a bit self conscious about filming in public as well. Still not got used to filming in low light with it though, seems a bit grainy no matter what settings I use.
Yeah, there's no getting around that it's terrible in low light. I have the GoPro 11 now and it's not much better than when I made this video with the 7!
Jodi and I are planning to go out west this year on a grand mountain biking trip and would be awesome to put some of these tips to work. You make it look easy on the videos that you make but I’m sure that behind the scenes it’s a lot of work. Thanks for the fun and informative video Matt.
Hi Jane! Really interesting video. Just wanted to know if you carry a selfie stick along, and if yes, do you keep it in your hands throughout the run. I am trying to find an alternative. Thanks!😊
Hey Naveen! Yes, I usually carry a selfie stick with camera attached for most of my runs where I intent to film anything. During races, I wear a pair of Flipbelt shorts with a lot of storage around the waist (like a built-in Flipbelt). DUring times I'm not filming I will take the camera off the stick and hold them in the pockets.
Love the Grouse Grind hat! Lol. Brit living in Canada here! Thanks for the helpful video, trying to document my own training a bit more so going to use some of these tips.
Are you on the west coast? Have you done the grouse grind! My wife and I absolutely loved it! We sweat the whole way up and was freezing for the rest of the time at the top! 🤣 Good luck documenting your training. For me it just adds another layer that makes my training even more fun!
@@its_Matt_B_ haha that sounds about right! Yeah I’ve been in Vancouver for 7 years and I’ve done the grouse grind a handful of times, I always forget how tough it is haha!
Thank you! It was fun filming this but things have changed a little now I mostly use a 360 camera. Now, instead of stopping the camera and moving it to show me running past, I can have the camera follow me as I go by!
Hi Jane! It's funny you asked this question because i've been thinking about making an update to this video! A few things have been upgraded; I use the GoPro 10 now and the Inst360 One X2, but the process is similar!
Thanks for the tips!! So helpful! :) I noticed in the last few weeks it seemed as though the camera would track the movement and did see the selfie stick any more, did you get new tech??
Good eye, Becca! 🦅👀 Since this video dropped I got the GoPro 9 Black, but that camera doesn’t erase the selfie stick. A few days ago I got the Insta360 One X2, but I’ve only posted one IG Reel so far using it. The first video drops today where I use it for the running b-roll!
D A Ahh, this is a great question. I usually take the camera out on my training runs, but I’ll only stop and do those run-past-the-camera shots when I’m running easy. On days I’m doing a tempo, or something involving any speed, I’ll just hold the camera while I’m running.
Thanks for going back and watching, Donato! I should probably update this video, as a few things have changed. Now that I use a 360 cam for my running shots and IG Reels, I get the “how did you film that” question weekly! 🤣
Thanks Matt, tricks of the trade 😉 I do have to ask...where are all the cars? 🤣 those roads barely had anyone using them! There’s more traffic at 4am here than there was in daytime hours in your video.
Nathan Clifford It won’t be long before all the cars fill in. I’ve been running through this area since it was a dirt path through scrub. Directly behind the portapotty shot, there are hundreds of apartments being built. The roads have been in for a little over a year, but the building is only started in earnest in the 6 months. It’s really nice running in such a quiet area....well, it was.
Depending on the quality you're looking for, I would probably film everything in 4k/60 (or even 4k/120) so you can slow down some of the running footage you get. If you plan on talking to the camera during the race, you could switch between 4k/30 (talking) and 4K/120 (action shots). Make sure your color profile is set to "GoPro." All other settings should be fine in their default setting. Bring a spare battery!
@@its_Matt_B_ Thank you for the prompt response. I planned on bringing an extra battery anyway I just ordered a multi battery charger. If I shoot in 4K versus 1080P approximately how fast do you think the battery will die faster? Thank you
@@TheUsualSuspekt You’ll still get a little over an hour, but that’s if you film non-stop. It’s likely you’ll be filming short clips, turning the camera on and off, so the battery time will be a bit different. I’ve found two batteries are enough for my marathons (start to finish). I usually bring 3 batteries and use the first one before the race (to capture the atmosphere). This is my video from the 2019 Chicago Marathon: ua-cam.com/video/0Ee6SJa4Wvk/v-deo.html
@@its_Matt_B_ Thanks for sharing. Not sure my video will be as cool as yours as I literally got my GoPro 2 days ago and just learned the basics. Im from Florida too. I cant believe you flew out the same day. Lol. What did you do with your camera when you didnt film? I planned on wearing the chest strap but maybe thats a bad idea. Not sure I can hold a camera in my hand for 26 miles. Good job
@@TheUsualSuspekt I wore a FlipBelt (running belt) and just took the camera out when I wanted to film. I had the camera put away for most of the race! Wheee in Florida do you live? Flying out the same day was a bit stressful, but it was nice to be home so quick after the race!
When I made this video I was using Davinci Resolve. I now edit all my videos on my iPad using LumaFusion. LumaFusion is a $30 app and worth every penny.
A lot (but also not much) has changed since I filmed this video, and for the last 18 months I've been editing my vids using LumaFusion. I mainly use it on my iPad as i've found editing using the Apple Pencil to be very handy. Luma Fusion is now available on your computer but I still prefer the ease of editing on an iPad.
Yes, but since this video I've changed to an extendable selfie stick with a tripod that folds down. I've found the longer extension can get better shots!
@@its_Matt_B_ That’s funny. Just goes to show what used equipment goes through 😂 I’m sure you cleaned it though. Definitely got your money’s worth and now it’s time to give the new one some exposure in videos

Nice seeing how it’s done. I’m considering getting a GoPro just for my own documentary of some of my runs.
