That would have never happened at Ima.i think at big ranches lots of mammas are giving birth so it's not a big deal like it is here. These guys are sooo close because they are isolated but when they get more females for Tex it will change. Poor pearl and baby Jo.
Theres like a technical term for it but there are some heifers like Santiana who's motherly instincts are strong But there's ones that get calf fever I think it's called where they'll stomp calves to death. There's also some that just aren't motherly and don't care for their calves for whatever reason. It's a part of why farmers will do daily calf checks and pull calves during calving season
Since you don't have a wooded area for the Longhorns there at LHL's, maybe you should think about a birthing corral with a privacy screen from the herd, up by the garage. Move the expectant mama's in as their time comes near, would be a safe private place away from the herd to relax and spend a few days with their calves. Plus you could put cameras up to monitor them from the sanctuary just in case there is any problem during delivery.
I thought if Gracie is pregnant or the next time they bred Pearl would be if they felt if she was close to birthing move her over with the goats. But your idea is great.

Pearl has not had time to "bond" with Jolene, before everyone started coming around, a first time mom too. Santana is an experienced Mom, and will fight to defend her newborn. I really wonder if after watching Lester's video yesterday if Pearl was trying to hide the baby in the "bushes". Lester the Longhorns have approximately 8 acres (taking pond into consideration) Would it be possible to make a calving pen even an acre or less, so the new mom's (you have Gracie next year) so you could put new Mom and baby in there yet still next to the family, Yet not have them able to push her around/away from the calf. Also could be opened when not needed for grazing or if someone needs to be separated for some reason.
I believe when Lester was building LHL'S he said that because the Longhorns especially Pearl amd Gracie already know the Littles and ostriches if they need separating they can go to other side. A calving pen would not make any sense having the whole other side plus the Longhorns don't like being closed in. I'm sure that now they have learned and will separate Gracie a few days before she has her baby. Also why make more work for himself when he has the otherside that he built for that reason. Idk I would not want or see a need for it.

Congratulations on such a beautiful calf! It funny how cattle can be sometimes especially a newly freshened cow. There is always one cow in the bunch that wants to make claim for the others baby, but the do eventually get over it. As far as the afterbirth, just leave it alone. Once the cow walks away from it, they won’t go back to it. As far as nutrients, yes it has some but she will make up by the hay and feed you give her. Best wishes to the new momma 💗🌸💗

People! You need to realize you are seeing 10 minutes of a less than 24hr period of this cows life. You are making judgements on how Pearl is handling her new baby and if she is feeding and caring for it properly based on just a few minutes which is during a very stressful time for her and Lester and Jami are sharing it with us to show us what they go thru to help these animals. Normally they do this on their own without human interaction, so they are actually lucky that there is back up around in case of problems. Stop making assumptions based on a quick video especially since we dont know the total timing of this. It looks as though it has only been a few short hours if that! Lester and Jami will stop sharing this kind of stuff if people keep saying negative stuff about how things are handled or that they are doing the wrong things. They do the best that they can and get the best information to help these animals as quickly and safely as they can. They would NEVER put an animal in harm's way. Think first before writing and posting some of these statements PLEASE. We all want to enjoy watching these beautiful animals and dont want negativity ruining it. Videos are 10 minutes in a 24hr day and you dont know what goes on in the other 23hrs and 50min, so keep it to yourself.

I think you guys made a good decision. I also wanted to point out that I feel like that was the closest you both have ever been to the entire LH family without close barriers. Lester was completely on the ground feet away from Tex especially and not once did he want to harm or charge at him. They come right to you now and are so happy and relaxed at the new property. Having a calving pen sounds like a great idea. It would give new moms a chance to bond with their new babies.

Jami she's so adorable 🥰 and Jolene is a cute name. Everyone was quite intrigued with the new one till things kinda went south there with Santiana wanting Pearls baby. Pearl sure didn't mind Lester helping her at all by carrying Jolene. I'm so glad you moved the cow , and have her the afterbirth. They have to eat it. according to her instinct. It's good that you did use a video pickling the afterbirth, I rather expect countless people who don't know all the things involved in raising cattle. Was my life, I was a farm/ranch wife for years. Congratulations on such a beautiful calf! It funny how cattle can be sometimes especially a newly freshened cow. There is always one cow in the bunch that wants to make claim for the others baby, but the do eventually get over it. As far as the afterbirth, just leave it alone. Once the cow walks away from it, they won’t go back to it. As far as nutrients, yes it has some but she will make up by the hay and feed you give her.

I was really surprised at how angry Santianna got when you shut the gate on her while moving Pearl & Joleen over to the goat pasture. That was such a good idea. Now they can bond in peace.

I think that Pearl was actually thanking you at the end there for getting her and Jolene to a less dramatic setting. Santiana was a real helicopter mom so I guess she's an overly helicopter Gramma. The picture of Lester sitting with the Longhorn family all around would make a beautiful larger picture for your home. Gotta laugh how Tex and Gracie stood apart from the fiasco just looking amazed. ❤️❤️

What a Gorgeous little girl Jolene is and Pearl looks so proud of her baby. Honestly you could see how much Pearl trusts the both of you and that speaks volumes❤️ The other side was always where Lester said he would put the girls if in cycle so it's just natural to give Pearl a few days away from Santiana the new Helicopter Grandma to bond with her baby. WOW!!!! That WAS crazy!. I do love how they all trust enough to have Lester sitting on the ground among them. And then, letting Lester pick Jolene up and carry her off, well that was just remarkable. Pearl is going to be a really good Mom.

People! You need to realize you are seeing 10 minutes of a less than 24hr period of this cows life. You are making judgements on how Pearl is handling her new baby and if she is feeding and caring for it properly based on just a few minutes which is during a very stressful time for her and Lester and Jami are sharing it with us to show us what they go thru to help these animals. Normally they do this on their own without human interaction, so they are actually lucky that there is back up around in case of problems. Stop making assumptions based on a quick video especially since we dont know the total timing of this. It looks as though it has only been a few short hours if that! Lester and Jami will stop sharing this kind of stuff if people keep saying negative stuff about how things are handled or that they are doing the wrong things. They do the best that they can and get the best information to help these animals as quickly and safely as they can. They would NEVER put an animal in harm's way. Think first before writing and posting some of these statements PLEASE. We all want to enjoy watching these beautiful animals and dont want negativity ruining it. Videos are 10 minutes in a 24hr day and you dont know what goes on in the other 23hrs and 50min, so keep it to yourself.

I think you guys made a good decision. I also wanted to point out that I feel like that was the closest you both have ever been to the entire LH family without close barriers. Lester was completely on the ground feet away from Tex especially and not once did he want to harm or charge at him. They come right to you now and are so happy and relaxed at the new property. It is truly amazing to see how far they have come in a short time. Love y’all ❤️
All those babies are beautiful. Very found of Gracie because of her colors but now her is Joleen and I love her colors. They are all amazing.
