Chinese narrative always downplays strategical aspects and emphasize on mental aspects when they lose to foreign players.Ma Long didn't have a solid backhand which is why he lost to Samsonov. He tried to play with power but Samsonov could even counter Wang Liquin's attacks so beating Ma Long wasn't much of a surprise. If he had a strong short game in the style of Ma Lin or a 2 wing attack style he would have fared better.

Seems to me that Ma Long, while appearing the most vicious at the table in the national team, is one of the gentlest personalities in the team.
