    If you’re shooting video on a really tight budget and you cannot afford an expensive, pro-grade lighting instrument, can you get away with using consumer grade LED bulbs from IKEA? Let’s take a look and see whether these bulbs can produce decent quality light for your video projects and consider the “down-sides.”

    Great review video Curtis. I have always enjoyed your reviews. I used those cheaper $1 bulbs on a short film once and it turned out great. We were shooting at bar that had some incandescent lights in the back ground along with lots of multi colored neon lights. I took four of the $1 bulbs put them in a soft box to give more light output and it blended perfectly. They work great when CRI quality isn't a big concern.

    Thanks for doing the color rendition tests and mentioned the reds too. That was helpful. I always forget (or overlook) the fact that you "could" use clamp lights with led bulbs for a cheap alternative, but as you said all that goes out the window on a professional shoot or something that NEEDS to be color critical. I've actually never been to Ikea but I've heard some good things, so I'm glad you tested these. Thanks again!

    I’ve been using 6 of the Ledare 11-watt 5000K bulbs in an Impact fixture that takes six bulbs. Picked up the fixture and softbox second hand really cheap on B&H, and now have a decent super low-budget key to use. 5000k is only about a 1/8 CTB away from the more standard 5600k daylight value. Appreciate the video to back up what I was seeing with my eyes: decent but not perfect color rendering. But still considerably better than most other common consumer LEDs. Thanks as always.

So often these types of subjects need someone with knowledge, experience, expertise, and common sense, and you seem to have all those in spades!!! If someone is starting out, they can get away with passion projects and bare bones. Thanks for sharing. Is it a good idea to mix a professional video light and a consumer led light in the same scene? I have a aputure tri8 which I planned on using it as the key light. I also need some extra light sources to light up the background and to create a edge light of the subject.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 років тому +1

      Hi Alex, it depends. This is often done in films when the consumer bulb is a practical light. Also depends on what you’re illuminating with each light. In the talking head shots here, the blue was from a “pro” light. If you’re trying to use one to fill the other, then things can get dodgy.

    I've been on the lookout for inexpensive LED bulbs to use for video/photography. I have found dimmable LED bulbs tend to have flicker. Non dimmable ones have steady light unless they are the very cheap. I'd lean towards 5000K types because it is closer to the sensor's natural color balance. Warm white (2700 - 3500K) mean the camera has to boost the blue channel significantly which could lead to more noise.

    Thank for the video Curtis. I have bought both before finding your video. and I quickly tested the cheaper Ryet with a 4 in one adaptor, so 4 bulbs, and you are correct, the red tinge is quite noticeable. I will also check the other more expensive bulb in the same 4 bulbs arrangement. As for the former, if its for only top down videos, I mainly do tech videos, and at the moment nothing is a paid content, but occasionally I get some products for review, as long as I stick to down down filming with thees bulbs, would you consider the Ryet bulbs okay? Justin - Thanks as always for your reviews. Pity that the LEDARE bulb struggles with R9 (red rendering), which is probably the most crucial spectrum for skin tones. It would be an otherwise fantastic low cost solution for key lights on a budget. The flicker issue is also a drawback.
    Is the LEDARE dimmable (probably not) and if so, does the color quality shift? I need to pick up some color accurate, dimmable bulbs to replace practicals (desk lamps, wall scones, etc.) where the R9 spectrum isn't quite so critical.

    • @curtisjudd

      Hi Dynamic Angles Photo and Video. I'm a little hesitant to buy anything like that. Does a diffusion panel adjust the CRI readings? Such as if your diffusion panel has more red - will it even the light out? Nobody seems to blog about that fact.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 років тому

      Great question! It would be very costly to design a diffusion panel to optimize the spectral output of a light source because lower quality light sources tend to have deficiencies in several spectral ranges. Also, using a scrim or any other filter material is problematic from the standpoint that filters remove things, they do not add things. So if there is not enough output of a particular spectral range (e.g., red), you cannot add more red with a filter. I hope that makes sense and thanks again for the good question!

  • @MiGelPhoto

    @pete49327 6 років тому

    Thanks. May sound dumb, but with modern digital cameras having ability to easily do custom white balance, why should I be concerned about color accuracy of these lights, or any for that matter? Thanks and thumbs up.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 років тому +2

      Hi Pete, color accuracy is still critical because you cannot just custom white balance to fix color spectrum deficiencies. White balance, even custom white balance, is just an averaging of the overall spectral output. It does not account directly for individual color inconsistencies (e.g., blue spectral spikes in most LEDs, yellow and green spikes which differ from fluorescent tube to fl tube).
      Cameras are tuned to expect a generally smooth transition between different colors on the spectrum, even for different white balance settings or presets. For example, while the tungsten white balance setting accounts for the spectral skew toward the reds and oranges, it assumes that the transition to the cooler blues and violets is smooth and relatively linear (like it is with true tungsten lighting). The problem with LEDs and Fluorescent and even HMI lighting is that the spectral transitions are not at all smooth and linear. Though with LEDs, they are generally getting better when it comes to professional grade LED lights.
      In short, custom white balancing alone will not address spectral inconsistencies and extreme transitions. Thus color accuracy - defined as a high color rendering index which also generally translates to relatively smooth, generally linear transitions between colors - is still very important if you want control over how your final footage looks.
      I hope this makes some sense.

    Thanks for sharing this. I used 13 watt warm white LEDs on a stills shooting recently and the results were pretty good. I had two Westcott TD-5s (one with 5 bulbs and the other with 3 bulbs), a softbox and strip bank. I used a color chart and shot in RAW and was able to achieve good output shooting between ISO-400 and 800.

    Weird. In Europe (Russia in particular) all IKEA bulbs are CRI >90 and completely flicker-free at shutter speeds up to 1/1000 or so (and, of course, they are E27, not E26). The color temperature issue stays though: you have a choice of either 2700K or 4100K, so using IKEA bulbs in a room that has no other light sources like displays, windows, screens or other lights is fine, but otherwise get ready for undesirable effects we here call, literally “porridge in [white] balance”. Anyway I prefer something that is ≈5500K or 3200-3400K.
    At that, while all lights at home that I have are IKEA LEDs, for go-around work (when I need to green screen on the go) my choice are Chinese Falcon Eyes minilight 45 LED: E27, 6000 Lm, wireless output control (4 groups, radio remote and CTO cap come with each light), CRI >95, 5500K, ≈120° angle. They ARE small compared to proper panels (a bit bigger than that 1800 Lm LEDARE light shown in the video) but they heat up noticeably (and have fans because of that, but those fans are so quiet that no microphone I use hears them from further than 15 cm, or ½ ft), and they can be fitted into a household light fixture that offers decent space for a bulb that size. They can't be battery-powered but, well, $50 or even less for such a light is very inexpensive anyway. Four of those are good enough for a 5 m² (≈55 sq. ft.) space at 1/25 and f/3.4 for Sony EX1R at 0dB.

    Hi Curtis, I like the idea of keeping costs down and as you say, would it matter so much for us limited early pixies.. but talking about flicker,, what if a two bulb cheap double were to be used with smaller reflectors but more than one ! surely that would eliminate the flicker , make two into one , be useful for small shots.. add two angles of light !! lots of plus with minimal cost .. portrait up and down light !! at a bargain .. even small 4 point lights for a full portrait glow surely the incandescence of each lamp would eliminate any flicker as you say.. two would cancel but four would be amazingly stable ! All led lamps have their own exact frequency , none other that perhaps NASA quality are in so in tune . At least in Europe all supply power is supplied in AC therefore it is pulse power unless put through a sub dc frequency supply.. even at that level a led is based on a "glow" system that has a sub frequency far beyond the ability of human awareness but light is a funny old thing.. it is a bit quicker than we know .. The actual quality of the led lamp itself is the thing that matters . If you had the ability to test two together , you would see an infinitesimally minute of luminescence on or off , and that would be beyond the capability of the human eye. But would be present in dual luminescence . Light emitting diodes are supplied by pulse power even though it is direct current it has been passed through a minute transformer.. Everything in the universe has a frequency no matter how close it's wave form might be . No matter how we consider ourselves to be constant, we are all at and on a private and individual path. I've seen people use these shop lights for narrative and the light output isn't really enough to light an interior scene without running high ISO, especially after bouncing or diffusing the light which is necessary for the vast majority of situations. You will end up opening up aperture a lot and if your budget involves shop lights then it's highly unlikely you'll have the tools to rack focus properly either. The clamps are a pain in the ass and you can't adjust intensity without a dimmer, which will probably be very noisy. You'll have to work pretty hard to make your stuff look good, when you could be renting a solid light kit for approximately the same cost per day as outright buying the shop lights. Then for personal fun projects a crappy set of eBay lights designed for film won't cost much more than shop lights and will come with stands and basic diffusion. Only use these in an emergency.

Cheaper and better than its predecessors, so I thought to myself "I must get it! Now! Instant!". Thankfully, the particular one that I want is out of stock. I probably would regret buying it if the R9, R13, R15 suck big time.
    That one which I want is non-dimmable. I understood that dimmable LED of any brands could cause flickering even when it is claimed not to flicker.

      @@posleterrible9542 Hmm. That tint ought to be all right. Can be easily corrected by white balance. Much better than one or few 'essential' spectrums are absolutely devoid or too low.
      I have Chinesium LED that claims to be 150W and full spectrum, but it is only 45W and my skin is like that of Morticia Addams. Not exaggeration. Neither white balance nor colour correction with applications will cure images (videos) which lack or devoid of those necessary spectrums. Very powerful applications can colour correct weird-looking images, but they still appear exceedingly weird. Every film company will not bother to spend so much money buying specific exorbitant light source/s should white balance or colour correction can be easily corrected using Chinesium light source/s.
      About Wattage, yes, I know it is inaccurate to use Watt for LED. Just a lousy but well-known thing like CRI. The world has moved away from CRI but the world still uses it because familiarity is hard to be killed.

      @@realchristopher4334 you will have to try them for your application. In my local IKEA they still have Ledare E27 1600 bulbs, which although nowhere near as efficient are much more color accurate and natural than the Solhetta I tired. I still have one Solhetta bulb in my house and this strikes me every time I enter the room it is installed in.

      Ledare (E27 and A type) is no longer available in my local IKEA. I read or heard that Solhetta will completely and totally replace Ledare in time, if my memory serves me correctly.
      I thought Solhetta is the best and the cheapest LED because it is unnaturally efficient (hundreds of lumens per Watt as opposed to common tens of lumens per Watt) AND the 90+ CRI claim. And because it is very expensive to make LED with both highly efficient AND realistic colour reproduction.

    You need to brush up on your Swedish, though ;-)
    “Ledare” and “Ryet” will both have the emphasis on the first syllable.
    “Ledare” (which means “leader”) you should have a good chance of getting just about right. But you might be in trouble with the “y” in “Ryet” as it's not a sound used in english at all. The meaning in Danish is “the reputation” or “the renown”, but I don't find the word “ry” in my Sweedish dictionary, and although the languages are very similar, identical words don't always mean the same.
