  • On a lovely walk around Liverpool I start thinking that a plan would come in handy and maybe a limited number of subject types. I also realise that seeing things that go unnoticed by most people can result in some very interesting photographs.

I have never been a big fan of the toy cameras like the Diana. However, the three shots at the beginning with it were really lovely. The softness of the lens really contributed to make the shots a bit ethereal. Goes to show it is the photographer not the equipment that makes the photo. I enjoyed all the photos!

City images are way too many to choose! Steve chose a camera/lens unit that was minmal. I often use my digitals to work seeing my main subjects or better images, in the mess, of shapes, perspectives, moments and varying decay. There's always decay. I find the pristine, the new, clinical boring and actually dead. It's usually huge, the billboards monumental, crushing our smallness as people! It's deliberate. In it's time the cathedral, was to show the Power of the church! Interiors of churches, are always a good choice! Here in Toronto, the art gallery, has been updated! The outside looks like one of those doomed airshps! Mirroring the area, in distortion. The staircases fascinating, redesigned by famous architect. Made very rounded and organic! Truth tell, the old stairs were also amazing! It's all the light and shadow, plus size! An empty square at bottom of first bldg. looks a like a vacant parking, for pay area.As lways Steve had shown and done great work. I love the real beauty of nature, but we are living in this continual re-developmnt. It's all big cities growing larger, into monstrosities.. One of your best videos! A great learning video, at our fingertips. Bravo!

Great video Steve and it's nice to see how your shots turned out. I think you got some crackers inside the Cathedral. You were also a lot more successful at the end of the day than I was. A lot of my shots turned out blurred. I think I had drunk too much coffee by then.

You've been more lucky with your Diana than me.
I crushed mine in anger when I found every shot ruined by huge light leaks.
Started saving up for my first real camera; the Nikon F (This was in 1968).
Never again. But I really like your Diana shots - and enjoyed your video a lot.
I too got the Escher vibe from the stairs image.
    Cheers!

What a rewarding day for you. I could certainly see you working on an abstract series of street pavers and wall decay/rust/graffiti. A couple of your shots reminded me of ones I've taken at an old naval battery, north of Seattle, one of my favorite locations.

I love the graffiti shots on the old doors and stuff; I’m always drawn to compositions like those myself. Tightly framed, compositions of this sort - as you suggest - often take on quite a strong look of abstract art, especially in colour.

Nicely done Steve love the old graffiti and rust flakes. Not a huge fan of the modern geometric architecture personally when I'm shooting in town I'm always drawn to the urban decay rather than beatification side of things. I loved the old drinking fountain too a slice of history right there. Top vid mate cheers I have a couple of days off last few days of Autumn it's dull and cold, not feeling the landscape shoot urge so might follow your lead and head into town find some rusty stuff to shoot.

Hi Steve, I regularly visit Liverpool to shoot some street photography but never thought about capturing the urban environment (buildings wise) That definitely opens up a whole new list of opportunities and one that I'll definitely be exploring further. You captured a great range of subjects and came away with some cracking image. For the Dock Road area images, I checked the maps, which area offers the greatest potential would you say? I found Dock Road to run for miles North of the city. Brilliant vlog and as others have said, one of the best. You definitely should vlog more of your urban trips 😊

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  Рік тому +1

Thanks Paul, I’m fascinated by the little things that I see in the city, so often overlooked.
The whole of the dock road is full of interest but as you say it’s pretty long. You can just walk from the city centre as we did or drive down to the other end near Bootle and walk back. There are so many side streets you could spend days just at the city end (which is where I’d start).

I don't usually feel safe in Liverpool, but liked the urban shots you've got here. Best, I liked the photo of the school-type chairs in the cathedral - nicely lit and such good natural colours. I recall going to Liverpool some years ago and seeing three blocks of apartments opposite the maritime museum where the end one was shaped like the bow of a ship. That was interesting. Thanks for the trip. I look forward to seeing more.

Steve, I follow several photographer's UA-cam channels, and in most of the postings there are one or two images which if I had taken them, would be displayed on one of me walls at home. Of course there is only so much you can put on walls throughout a home. This video contains more images, ratio wise, than any other I have seen, that if I had taken them, I would consider display worthy. You have an excellent eye, as I have stated before, and you have a wonderful aesthetic to go with that eye. I am wondering if it is just who you are and how you see things, or if at least some of it, is learned? I know that there is such a thing as "educated" taste. I am working on improving my composition skills this year, but I also see a need to improve on what I think is a good subject to have an interest in. I am really taken with what you find to shoot; what you see that attracts your attention, and how you see it and compose it. Did that all develop over time? In any case this is a most excellent video. Thank you for making it and for posting it. Cheers.

    • @SteveONions

I have a similar problem when i go to town... always looking for those things - tones and textures and juxtapositionings - that resonate in some way with what i really value, which is the non-human world. That, and things like a rusting Ferrari being colonized by lichens and mosses... i can only hope.
