  • Well things don't always go as planned and today I had to fix the steps going to our RV. The sad part is I broke our RV Steps twice but take a look at options for upgrading our RV steps and the accessories that can help.

We took our adult son camping last season with our Imagine 22MLE, he had a similar “escalator” occurrence. We upgraded our steps that next week also. Same weekend he also broke the handle on the fridge. Thankfully we too like to fix things and upgrade as we can. Keep the videos coming!

Unfortunately, even when purchasing what should be a quality unit, travel trailers are rather “not well made” in my opinion. Fortunately they are relatively straight forward to repair and upgrade.

Great video! Thanks for helping us learn through the experiences of others instead of repeating them. I’m glad you are OK.
One more option for ground-contact steps not mentioned in your video is the Lippert Solid Stance RV Step Stabilizer.
This made a big difference for us. Our RV travel trailer steps are a manual fold up. Admittedly our steps are only a three-step, so I'm not sure how much of a difference the stabilizer would make on a taller RV with more steps. Also the stabilizer mostly works on the last step. But that step was the one that bounced the most since it had the most leverage on the trailer. My wife was very uncomfortable with the bouncy step but now feels much more at ease. The stabilizer does not interfere with the manual folding at all.
We like our manual fold up steps and have never considered upgrading to a solid step. It's nice to not be folding up a step into the RV with rain and mud. We also don't have the issue you mentioned about being unable to open up the steps close to nearby obstacles.
    Safe travels and God bless!

I got the best of both worlds: traditional folding steps (Aluminum ) witht he lipart step braces installed underneath. that way I canhave the stability of these monsterous steps that only can be deployed on perffectly level ground, but with the added benefit of my steps being able to be deployed all the time in any situation.

On the step repair to make it stronger, just rivet a long piece of aluminum angle the whole length for all bolts and replace washers on hex end with larger flat washer or double up them.
    Thought it worth mentioning.
    ...great vid too.

  • @grandicornis

I think the riveted on plate is a better repair than welding, especially since most people out there are not prepared to weld aluminum that thin. The riveted option should be within almost everyone's skill level.

Like yourself, I prefer to do all my own maintenance & fixes. I am somewhat mechanical , but there are good resources like yourself on UA-cam to help as well. Taking it to an RV place is just too much down time & usually it is not done to my standard. Another thing that is not good for your steps is attempt to move the tt over a foot or two with them down to save a few minutes. I found a big rock! Even though they were steel, physics took over and they gave before the rock. I quickly learned how to bend, pry & hammer & straighten them out. So trying to save a couple of minutes cost me a couple of hours.

great video. However, your issue is different than mine. My steps are fold up steel on my 2004 Montana Fifth Wheel and the steel rivet broke and of course the step is no longer usable. Do you or any of your subscribers know how to get a bolt/bushing/nut, replacement kit for this issue?
Love your videos and PTL you're fine. I love your humble great attitude when you through yourself under the RV "BUS"

Haha!! I’ve done that too brother the slip and falling on my rear. We have the MORryde steps that hide away too and it’s a love hate relationship. I love how sturdy they are but for travel days when you want to stop and eat lunch or use restroom on the side of a road is not as ideal. I’ll be watching to see what your ‘next step’ is in this topic. You like what I just did right there?

I don't know what it is about those steps, but they are like nails on a chalk board to me. I'm currently in the market for my next rv and if it has these, they'll be the first thing I replace back to the roll out ones. If I pull over while on the road, I only have to roll it out once where I can hop in and out without needing all three steps.

Oh man, i got 20 yrs more on u easily, n so i've gone up n down more steps, u think experience comes caution n wisdom!
Last nov not paying attention in the condo, going down those pie shaped steps on a turn i missed placed my foot to close to the edge of a tiny part of the step 🙄 (carpet thank god but socks on made it too slick) I slip n slam down on my elbows, n i ripped both arm rotor cuffs 🙄. (Slowly healing still, i'll survive). Now here's the part that makes me laugh, after slipping, my legs are straight out like I'm lying on the stairs like a sled n I immediately start sliding my arm swings up and grabs the hand rail to stop me from sliding, but I'm still in stupid mode n don't think to just fold my knees! 😂🤣. The visual makes me laugh every time. Dam those pie shaped steps, good thing it wasn't raining inside too 😂. 🍻

Went with the Torklift years ago and will never go back to the OEM style seats. The ability to set the Torklift as a ladder in tight situations have given us access in truck parking at rest areas. Plus the glow tapes are a big help at night when we don't want to turn on outside lighting.
