I left out the Stratoliner on purpose because I'm going to be making a video on that one model alone soon,
but
it is also a big one for this list!

I bought a Stetson Bozeman wool felt hat in June. I felt a little self-conscious about wearing a western style hat in the North East, but come Autumn, it cannot be beat. Big, generous brim (going all the way around your head), it's warm and when it's raining out, you won't even notice the rain. It's that good. I've spent 85.00 on things that I do not like as well, and at my age, I couldn't care less what others think. This is for me!
Great hat, if u ever want so,etching just like it, with a little shorter, more subtle brim, there’s a version made here in NYC that has a little shorter brim, it’s almost the same, but slightly less western. It’s Called The Outback Hat www.jjhatcenter.com/products/the-outback-hat if u ever want another Bozeman, but in another color u might consider this one next time, it’s just a tad less western in the sense that it has a little shorter brim, they also roll for travel, great for rain and snow..
I just got a Bozeman and I love it! Glad to hear other positive thoughts on it.
Crossover hats are fantastic! I never knew about them until I watched your videos from the shop tours. Now I own a Dune, for a little over a year, and I love it.
Stay healthy, Kevin. I appreciate the videos you put out.
Guy, I’m trying man. You too.. I’m trying to improve the content, thumbnails, content, titles..everything will be more facts, less fluff for a while I think
I had a couple of outbacks when working and prospecting in northern BC and Alberta. I loved the thick wide brim. The ones I had were tough as hell and survived all manner of potential destruction. All made in Australia.
I would be thrilled to find a whippet or Stratoliner made with thick cowboy felt. I dunno, it might look off. But I live in a very rainy place and would be willing to try it.
I went to my local hat store and asked the lady if i could see her 💯 crushable beaver.
There was a terrible missunderstanding.
LOL.....
Complete tangent, but your joke reminded me of something that happened to me. Back around 2000 the primary ATM company serving where I lived in WI was called "Tyme". I moved to AZ and went into a gas station and asked the clerk if he had a "Tyme" machine... There was a long stare before informing me that those had not yet been invented.
Did U have 2 eat your words? Naaa!!!
I got a Bozeman. Love. It. First Stetson I’ve bought. Waterproof and crushable. BEST HAT EVER
I appreciate all the great insight, Kevin. Love learning from these videos you make. Have a great weekend !
You too, be well..thank you.
Thanks Kev. Big Open Road and Stratoliner fan myself. A lot of versatility with the cross overs. Stay safe
Crossover hats are some of the coolest hats I think because they are so versatile.
My favorite by far is the Stetson Dune Gun Club!
My daily wear hat. Love it.
You have given the most information on the hats I like the most.
I didn't even know there was a term, a Crossover.
Thanks.
All these hat sites are confusing and clueless and you don't know what you will end up with according to their imagines and descriptions.
This helped a lot.
I’m glad! Thanks for the comment, and for the support! Appreciate it!
Kevin , This is great information. Enjoy all your UA-cam videos. This one is excellent information for me. Stay cool man. 🎸🎼🤠
I like the open road. But I wanted to go cheap. I took a 15 years old Akubra snowy river from a hook in my man's cave and worked on it. The felt is unbelievable. I took it to the bathroom and let it have a shower and then let it dry. Hat was a little bit to small ( with time), I ripped out the sweat band for a better size and put in cattle mans crease (was a telescope). The hat looks great and the quality could be even better than an open road. Akubra rules. And after you were gushing over a bushman (camp draft) I bought one directly from Australia. The malleability of the crown is awesome, I could do all this because I learned a lot from your videos.
Wear it in good health, that’s one of the longest lasting hats on earth.you’ll love it
Great episode - love the open crown wide brim & also wide brim western fedoras. Thanks!
Glad you like them!
Once things get back to the new normal I’m going to place an order from your store because I have learned so much from you.
Thanks buddy.
KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! Oh...I may have forgotten to tell you but I ordered the Stratoliner Premier on your recommendation. I told Benji it was your videos that brought me to JJ’s. I may pick up another hat for Father’s Day. Maybe a Whippet.
Looking at the outdoor styles but not sure. Bozeman Dune Gun club. I like them all but not sure what to choose
I started wearing hats with a dress hat. Than I bought a crossover just as a rain hat - BUT I really like this crossover so much I wear it now each day!
Exactly, that’s always happening to customers, they buy it for a vintage themed party, or for a functional reason..then they love they style so much they come back for more!
Do you remember Billy Jack? I wear his same hat, open crown hats were traditionally Thought of as a Native hat in the old days certainly all the wester movies of the 50’s and 60’s define the Native with his open crown flat brim hat!!!
Sounds great I loved that film when I was a kid, the first action hero..
Have you seen a
STETSON GRENADIER LODEN In Green? I’ve only ever seen one for sale and was not my size I’d kill for one
That’s a cool looking hat!
Hey Kevin, I definitely enjoy your videos, I was never into these kinds of hats however since watching your videos I now own 5😁 I really like the Stetson gun club style,I have the gambler, the Pawnee, royal flush and a dune I also have another Stetson felt, thanks brother, keep the videos coming 👍
Thank you!!!!
@@quadrogong1111 you’re welcome brother
Years ago, like the late 1980s, I had a Stetson from the ‘James Dean’ collection; it was definitely a crossover hat. Teardrop crown, western weight felt, raw edge brim.
Patrick Washburn wow, I don’t remember that collection, sounds cool,
Love my Stetson Roadster in Walnut color. The Royal Deluxe felt is amazingly soft.
So,etching about those, that’s exceptionally good felt, very, very reliable, zero issues.. good hat. And it has that rare chicken foot crease!
Kevin, I love that you are still rockin a CRT TV!
That old tv has a built in VHS player, so I keep it in the bedroom in case I want to play the old video tapes, I have tons of old concerts, rare shows..all kinds of cool stuff on VHS, so I keep that one for that feature.
I like these. The open road is a beauty.
Got my Open Road on my 70th birthday. We moved from Illinois to Arizona so I decided it was better to go big than go home. Subsequent wardrobe additions have to be compatible with the hat. Otherwise...
@@davididolmon7695 happy birthday
Thx Kevin great video!!!
Hi Leslie! Hope u and the family are healthy and safe, take care, Kev
Thx Kevin same to you and yours!!!
Harry Truman wore an Open Road too!
Is it possible for the public to get their Fall 2020 catalog? I noticed some of those hats you discussed aren't on their website yet.
I like to wear my open road with the front left quarter of the brim snapped down, and the whole thing tilted a bit to the left. The crown looks almost straight, and the brim looks tilted about 30 degrees...it’s got a cowboy-Robinhood-rock n roll vibe. It’s a cool look (in my opinion that is 🤷🏼♂️)
Agreed...very cool look bud.
Hi Kevin, I've got a Stetson crushable wool Gus hat that I've had for about 6 years and the wire is causing the brim to wrinkle and look weird and I was wondering if the wire could be removed or if that would ruin the hat? Also is there a limit to how many times a crown can steamed and reshaped? Thanks for the great videos I have learned more about hats than I thought possible!
Yeah, Ive taken them out, u find the end of the wire by feeling it, then open the seam on the welted edge, with a razor, a few stitches, pull out the wire, glue the seam back w hot glue gun or sew it back up. but.. losing the wire will chang3 the look of that hat a lot. U can try to fix the wire first.
nice thanks man
Thank you!!!!!!!
What do you think about the Range 6x? It’s full western, but seems small enough to still be a bit rock n roll.
It’s right in the middle of the open road and rancher, like a medium sized Hybrid of both,
it’s so similar to them that we never got it,we always sold the other two, which are big, big sellers.. but sure, it’s nice, kind of in betweeny..not too small or too big
I really like the look of the Stetson Yancy but don’t like the hat band. Are these easily changed? Looking for something Oppenheimer-like.
They can be taken off fairly easily , the replacement bands usually either works like a men’s belt, or tie on.
The Cattleman Crease( Open Road Hat) is easier to pick up then a regular Fedora or a Tear Drop Style Hat.
True, it gets less damage from
Picking it up, too
Couldn't Stetson do better than this
what is that black hat your wearing. it looks real fine.
Good Morning LT, hope you’re well.. that hat is a 15 year old Borsalino Anello, it has been discontinued since then, but it’s almost got identical specs to
“The Ken” by JJ Hat Center Custom, the Stetson Saxon is also super close, I really like that hat a lot.. a Black or Grey Saxon is so cool, classic and fashionable on so many levels, The Saxon would be very close, i think
Hi I'm curious.. I sweat allot from my face and head.. what felt would last longer or what hat would stain faster between a black felt and a white open road?
White shows stains easier, just buy a $5 "sweat band" the second u see sweat touching the felt..
It goes between your forehead and the sweatband, sticks in. The hat will never get sweaty..ever. but yes, white shows sweat stains black shows salt stains.. I'd say blk better though.
www.jjhatcenter.com/collections/hat-accessories.
Buy this $5 thing and it's a non issue
Dude.. Tangents.. I learn so much when you hit all the information. And one of the things I enjoy about ur channel. I tend to be sthe same way so.. yeah!
Hahaha yeah, we're a little bit ... different. I guess. Ain't nothing wrong with that..
Tangentaholism is an untreatable disease, but it can be managed
@@quadrogong1111 I believe it helps teach people, or give instruction, but I have learned to catch myself, and end it at a logical point when my coworkers give me the look like I heard you the first time. It seems to be a positive especially "cheerleading" people through difficult tasks, and through covid Sanitation protocols.
Keep on the right path!
Thanks,Scott..have safe and happy holiday!
Hi! I've got a question: what's the difference between the stetson stratoliner and the temple fedora?
Temple has a wide ribbon band, strat is pencil thin.
Temple brim is has a raw edge, strat has a bound edge, trimmed w ribbon.
Temple has a dimensional, oval shaped brim 2 3/8” on the sides, and 2 5/8” in front and back,
Strat has a 2 3/8” brim all around
temple has a crown with a Center crease
Strat has a teardrop,
(Although the “premier Stratoliner “ comes open crown, u can shape it any way u want)
they’re both dress hatsw similar brim sizes,
but the stratoliner S.E. Has teardrop, a lower crown than a temple, it’s boxier and slightly western in feel, the Temple is a classic dress hat, but in brown ,w the brim turned all the way down, that’s the Indiana Jones..
@@quadrogong1111 Thanks! I am a beginner and I really wanted to know!
What if U R a heavy sweat (perspire)?😅
What color hat is most versatile
That you can wear with anything
If you could only get one hat
Like a taupe, (greenish grey, or brownish grey) I wear a taupe hat in a lot of my videos I film inside my bedroom, it’s on some of my thumbnails too
Would the Valencia in taupe be that one hat ?
Hi Kevin! I was hoping I could ask you something, since you may know.. (my bad for the dupe message!)
Where could I buy a replacement ribbon for a Dune? I wanted to replace the band on another outback hat to make it
look like one... I'm looking for 2-ply grosgrain? is this correct? and Does JJ sell these? I appreciate all the videos, I've been
binging them, and I can safely say I know more about hats than anyone
else in my own personal life, and I learned it all from you :) thanks again!
Busst One we can match the ribbon for you, or get it very, very close, the same width, same kind of ribbon, and we try to match the color as best as possible. He can replicate any type of bow too, there are no repairs no until we are completely open for business again. Not a huge order, he’s done it before, on dunes, Stratoliner, open roads,ranchers..they are all standard gross grain jobs, we can even get u an extra Dune pin and feather for no charge if u need them.
But..again, the repair shop is usually open weekdays 10-7, right now the shop and custom shop are closed,
except for mail order. You speak to Van,the hatmaker, he will make it for u, when we reopen,
Busst One there isn’t a “replacement ribbon” available, that doesn’t exist. It needs to be made from scratch,
every hat has different length bands and hat sizes, and sewing them on takes some skill, he can make u the exact band u had before or whatever u want, different color, lighter, darker, leather, anything u want..it’s going to be made custom,so u can pick whatever u want, or just ask for a replica of the stock Dune band, he’s seen thousands of them,so he’s very familiar with it,and they turn out perfectly clean, and exactly the same as Stetson bands.
@@quadrogong1111 I appreciate the reply! Been counting the days for everything to finally reopen. Thanks!
I keep asking how to change a fedora hat band \ ribbon
Two ways, u can have a hatmaker MAKE a band from a roll of ribbon, that costs a bunch ($45) but it’s the right way, he makes a clean, authentic band for u. Other hat makers might do this for $25 or so, we only have one man doing repairs, but he’s the best.. he does a great job.
u can get any color or width u want, bow type, bow in back.. anything. But u can’t do it yourself, it’s actually made for you, there isn’t a pre made dress band with a bow u can just change...
The other choice is clip on bands, they have three pleats, and no bow. Easy to clip on, search “ clip-on bands “ I have a video on them.
They look good on straws, they’re casual, not as great on felts, but u can do it,
We sell the only in summer June to sept. For $10, they hook on easily,
but they’re not on our website, u need to call. We have very few now, usually by June we stock them, but this year it’s delayed for obvious reasons.
What stains/damiging to fur felt hats I'm not to sure like oil or stuff like that please anyone help me out
Anything deep damages it, most stains.. but pretty much anything on the surface, (not deep),can be buffed or sanded out.
@@quadrogong1111 thanks so much for that stay safe
Did Stetson discontinue the Roadster??
Dave yeah, they did, they expanded the Stratoliner line, and the only fur felt dress hats w leather band are now less trad and more trendy/modern with an outdoorsy edge, hats the Bingham, the Spruce look slightly more modern, I guess that look, the regular dress hat with a leather band, wasn’t selling well? No idea why they do that stuff, I’d assume sale were low.
but yes, it’s gone.
Kevin what’s he name of the hat above the tri-city in this video?
That’s called THE KINGS ROW, (flat top, flat brim)
it’s a new hat that was supposed to be released this last fall but because of covid most of the new hats never arrived,
should be out by next fall though.
Thanks bro. You rock 🤘🏽
That was awesome! Definitely keep that black hat. It looks great on you. I really like all the hats that look very Western & have those stampede strings on them. I added one to my cowboy hat. I got my Stetson Roundup with stampede string from JJs with the 20% off. I have this dream that I guarantee will happen. I know you will laugh so here it comes: I'm going to drive out into the middle of the desert in my ancient Porsche with flat paint, dings & ripped interior with the top down, stop & get up on the trunk lid wearing my cowboy boots & spurs & drag my amplifier up there, plug my guitar in & play Red House really loud to the infinite emptiness of the desert. And I will be wearing my Tom Mix hat & big fuzzy chaps. My dream since childhood. 🤠 Has your family always lived in NY city? Has anyone owned a car? My uncle who was in the Jewish mob lived in the Plaza & had an old Packard. My cousin stayed with them one summer & they drove to Atlantic City & stayed a few days. He was a jerk & didn't care about cars. That should have been me. Does JJs have a collection of women's hats? Not those grass green with polka dot cotton jobs that women wear to the country club, but nice women's hats of all different styles? You know you could easily write a very nice coffee table book about hats. Be safe. 👍☮️🌞🦠😷🎸
We have a small lady’s section, it’s expanding though, lots of out regular hats sell to ladies, the Tri City, the Ontario..custom hats..
The Stetson Roundup! Does JJs have any cowboy hats made by any company other than Stetson? They should stock some ’Boonie’ hats for us outdoorsy types, especially breathable waterproof styles. Be safe. 👍☮️🌞😷🦠🎸
Ronnie Van Zant( Lynard Skynard) Hat was a Gambler with his Name printed inside of it. I guess the Owner was offered $10K for it on the Reality Show Pawn Stars? Idk alot of their Shows were Staged.
kevin someday i am going to get to new york and i am bringing a horse there and i am going to ride that horse right into the store and right up the stairs. Get ready buddy, we are going to put the yee back in the haw.
I'll do a Doe see Doe square dance with you if u do..
OMG let me know when you do this so I can get all gussied up in my cowboy boots, fuzzy chaps & Tom Mix hat. It just isn't right to only wear that on Halloween 🎃.
This just gets better! 👍☮️🌞🦠😷🎸
My Open Road default is with the front brim turned down, but I'm trying to get used to leaving it up. My Open Road Silverbelly Royal Deluxe arrived today. If you folks like some awesome guitar riffs and have 25 minutes to spare, try this video by Eric Gales and his pals doing Little Wing. ua-cam.com/video/amtLZwS441M/v-deo.html
Bob Duncan enjoyed it, seen this before, pretty famous clip, he’s awesome..thank you!

@@quadrogong1111 Those were some sweet licks. And I love to see you wear your Mothers of Invention t-shirt! Thanks for the Zappa video, Kevin.
