I got my first cowboy hat today and just wearing it makes you feel like a different person. I grew up in a small town in North Carolina and not many people wear them around there. I ended up joint the military and got shipped across the country way out west. That’s where I realized how different I was from others because my manner and how I was raised. This was about the time I started embracing my southern heritage and I wanted to stand out from everyone else. At first I thought that people would look at me weird because I’m black but over time I got very comfortable in my own skin and I don’t care how people view anymore. Nowadays people compliment me and I seem to get a lot more respect because of my attitude and me embracing my own heritage no matter what. I appreciate your video and the information you shared, thank you.
Just purchased my 1st cowboy hat a few weeks ago. I've never been treated better or talked to more by complete strangers. People love cowboys. You get the occasional stupid comment, but you will be surprised how much love and kindness that you receive. You are completely correct about the state of our country and the positive power of the most American head cover.
@@dewboy13 no, I don’t even know of I want to live anymore :/ so no hat, they’re kinda pricy for a student and its har to get the right size and all when you live in Europe
There are a lot of things to do with a cowboy hat in daily life. But the main etiquette of any cowboy hat: (When you should remove your hat) 1) At Dinner with your family (unless your family says it's okay to wear your hat). Even then it's just plain courteous not to wear your hat in the presence of your family. 2) During the Pledge of Allegiance (remove your hat and place it at your side or over your heart) It's an insult (both to the Flag, our Nation and its armed forces) to wear your hat during the Pledge. Same reason it's an insult to take a knee during the Pledge. 3) In a formal setting when there are ladies present (remove your hat). It's insensitive to the ladies to wear a cowboy hat. 4) When in close proximity to or greeting a lady for the first time, you should gently tip your hat to her. (It's a gesture of respect to the opposite gender and believe me, she'll appreciate the gesture). 5) At a funeral or funeral home (remove your hat). It's a gesture of respect to the family and to those who've passed if your remove your hat. 6) At a formal function (wedding etc.) It's just plain good manners and respect to remove your hat during a formal function, unless of course such an occasion requires it. 7) At a theatre (unless you're sitting in the very back row) Remove your hat. It's not only a distraction, it's just plain rude to wear your hat in a theatre forum. 8) During church, remove your hat (it's a insult to the Lord, and just plain a distraction to the guests and to the pastor to wear your hat). The major exception being unless it's a cowboy church, then wearing the hat is perfectly okay, but always remove your hat during the Lord's Prayer and Communion. 9) When you must take your cowboy hat off, there's two places it should be. Either hung up on a hat rack or upside down on the crown (never on the brim.) 10) Never touch another man's cowboy hat. It's an unwritten code that you may very well risk your life touching another person's cowboy hat.
Native Texan, cop, moved up to Washington state for work, needless to say I feel like a stranger in a very unAmerican part of the country. Went home to Texas to see family got me my first cowboy hat since I was a kid…. Boots too. Never thought about it being an American thing, but your right. To me it’s a very proud part of my Texas heritage, we Texans are very patriotic and don’t take shit.
As a fellow horseman, I agree with your assessment on hats. A big one around my home is no hats at the dinner table. It’s the way that it’s always been. The first thing you say is grace before a meal and you give reverence to the Lord by taking your hat off and bowing your head.
I thoroughly enjoyed this vlog. My grandpa was a cowboy, my dad...cowboy, and I married a cowboy. Texas raised. All of what you said in terms of etiquette, I witnessed as a child. Great video!
This is a Very Good Video. Very well done. I thought I was going to learn about hats. I learned about Values and a state of mind. And Yes, I have worn a Stetson every since I was a young Man for many of the same reasons stated. You just put it into words. Best Wishes from Montana! M.H..
Going to college in Tennessee and I’m coming from Connecticut got my first hat and people are definitely not used to see boots and a hat around CT but feels good to stand out!
I'm from Alabama but spent just over a year in Boston and there were quite a few what I would call "city cowboys". they looked like they were from the south or Texas but then they would open their mouth and they would have the Boston accent
I struggle with social anxiety at times and buying my first hat (I have a felt and straw now) and I was really hesitant about wearing it out even though I live in an area of California where people wear cowboy hats a fair amount and my lord the amount of confidence that comes from someone saying “nice hat” or simply someone else in a cowboy hat nods to you is amazing.
..... now, find yourself a pair a boots and learn to walk in them.......and join a jiujitsu gym....it helps with getting that social anxiety demon out of you. Nothing like staying calm while someone is trying to choke you out!
Don't you worry about them, they can say things but you will get more looks from the ladies for sure, only the guys gonna rag on you a little bit until they see how you carry yourself in that hat. That's the best advice I can give for this circumstance as I don't suffer from anxiety but I do live in a northern city on the east coast where you never see cowboy hats or boots being worn... I get compliments all the time since wearing my hat and boots, especially from the ladies. and I'm only 4 days into owning them...... @@speaktruth247
Thank you Steve. I enjoyed your information. I did not grow up around hats n boots but my interest in them began very recently for the very reason you pointed out, they are American heritage and represent the quality type of individuals that we all want it our lives. I served my country and since I can no longer wear my uniform I’ve embraced this iconic American practical fashion as my everyday uniform.
That's a lot of good information for those of us who love hats, but don't really have the opportunity to wear them as often as we'd like, and who haven't had a mentor to share these points with us. I'd like to add one more reason to wear a hat, and that is to protect yourself against skin cancer. Men stopped wearing their fedora and homberg hats sometime in the 1960s. Since then, skin cancer rates have shot up. When I was in my late 30s, I had a patch of skin cancer dug out of my forehead. My dermatologist said to me, "You know all those old men who wear hats? Well, you're one of 'em now." I took his advice, and my hat collection sometimes makes me blush. Yeah, they can be a style statement, but you're absolutely right - - they are functional. Thanks for a great video to start off my day with! Blessings to you, Sir!
I too have recently begun wearing a cowboy style hat. I’m over the whole ball cap thing. They look like something a kid wears. Real men wear hats. Thanks for the education on etiquette.
I live in VA and not many people wear cowboy hats here and I usually just wear mine when I’m outside working but I wore it in a grocery store once recently and I saw a big change in the way people treated me everyone was so much more friendlier
Well, I don't exactly recall what I was thinking 8 months ago, but people are friendlier everywhere when you're wearing a cowboy hat if you tilt it up a bit
Im from Sweden and I would really like to own a genuine cowboy hat. But I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on one just to find out that it doesn’t fit my head or suit me as a person. I think the best thing to do is to wait for the right time. I really want to travel to the US and see for myself how it is or at least how I think it is as a tourist. You never see people in my country wearing these hats but I want to ignore that and be myself. I’m tired of having to hide my opinions and my belief from everyone. Even my friends and family because I’m scared that they will be disappointed or that they won’t see me in the same way. But you can’t hide your true self forever. Great video it felt as if I were sitting right next to you. Keep it up.
Thanks Aggressor! I hope you get a chance to come here someday!. Make sure that you come west of the Mississippi River in order to find the best stores for Cowboy hats and people who can advise you on them - Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming or Montana. Best of luck!
You usually find a size chart on hat websites such as Resistol or Stetson, but some of these hats are specifically designed for differant shaped heads but they make crushable hats that conform to your head shape these are usually not as durable as a beaver felt hat but an easy way to start
@@aggressor6609 Do your research because cowboy hats are not all the same. Felt hats aren’t the same either. All depends on what you want out of a hat. Are you going to wear it in bad weather? Are you going to wear it every day or once a year? That kind of thing. You can spend very little for a wool hat or a pile of cash for a beaver hat. Most wool and lower end fur felts only come pre shaped whereas lots of higher end hats come with an open crown and flat brim and you have to tell the shop what kind of shape you want and they will shape it right there. (If you buy from a good hat shop) My young son has a $75 wool hat, my Resistol 6x was about $240 and pre-shaped but my Rodeo King 100x was $900, open crown and was shaped to my liking. Just saying for comparison. But if you find a hat you like but maybe the shape isn’t right for you it can always be steamed and re-shaped. The higher quality the fur felt the easier it is to shape. Wool is hard to shape, beaver is easy. Never force the hat into shape, always steam it. Also important is the way the hat is blocked from the factory. Generally Stetsons are more round, Resistol are more oval but also can be long oval. My Rodeo King is long oval. The big main brands to look for are Stetson, Resistol, Rodeo King, American Hat, plus custom makers. Those are some of the bigger companies. I’m sure others can chime in on this. As for straws, they are a little more simple. People will say straw cowboy hats are plastic. No they are not. They are just sprayed with lacquer to make them weather resistant. American Hat uses a different lacquer than the others so they are more flexible. Easier to get back into shape if you mess them up. I’m going on way too long. My advise is to not order a cowboy hat from the internet. Go to a good hat shop where people have been around a while and know what they are talking about and know what they are doing. You will much more satisfied with your hat.
I was searching for cowboy hats on utube and accidentally tapped on your video. I must say that I enjoyed very much your video and it has open my mind a bit more about the symbol of wearing the hat. I am originally from Romania now proudly an American citizen and I am trying to learn about American my new country. So I join the USPS as Mailman and I absolutely love it. I am planning to do some touring cross country to get to know more about America. I am passionate photographer that’s my only hobby that keeps me out of home and other daily problems:) Well God bless you and your family and thank you for all your wisdom!
Interesting, many thanks. I’m from London, and always had an interest in the west. A couple of years ago I spent two weeks driving over the South West, four-corner states, national parks. Loved the country and the people, and will go back when I can.
I've been wearing Cowboy hat's since I was a young boy. I was enamored by Cowboys and wanted to be just like my hero's. Though I was born in the city I always wore the hat. Now that I'm older I wear it for a different reason. Like you said, it represents something. Here in Alberta, Canada, there is a long history of Cowboys that built this province from the ground up. I wear it now to honor that heritage.
I just bought my cowboy hat from kemo sabe in aspen Colorado and I can’t agree with you more, and yeah I spent a pretty penny on it but that’s what we work hard for and like you said nothing says America responsibility and independence like a nice felt cowboy hat. Got some branding done to mine too and when I put it on I feel like all my hard work and my dedication to my country is shown by wearing it. Thanks for the video !
The last time I put my hat on a bed I was in a severe car accident my friend and I nearly died. I’m religious and usually don’t believe in superstitions but I do believe in this one. There is a reversal to “the curse” and so far it’s worked spit into the hat throw it down and * lightly (as to not damage it) stomp on it.
Like your video. Makes a lot of sense of everything you said. I’m 45 and I just bought my first felt hat and I loved it. People told me it looks good and I told them a little bit of what I heard of what to do and not do while using a hat. God Bless u and The USA.
Great video - Although I've worn hats on & off all my life, I recently started making sure I wear one as much as possible when I go out....for the very reasons you stated! It says America, and it says many other things...We need more cowboys - and everything they represent!
Bought my Resistol for the 4th of July. I love it and so does everyone else. God bless this great country and it’s good and noble people. Thanks for the video.
In 1970, while in high school, in started workin on a dairy farm in Chino, Ca. I had never worn a cowboy hat until then but that was a piece of clothing that I was expected to wear. After a stint in the Marine Corps where I had to wear a cover every time I was outdoors or under arms I went “Hatless”. After about 10 years of not wearing a hat, my Dr. found some pre-cancerous lesions on the top of my head. She asked me if I worked outside and if I did would my employer let me wear a wide brimmed hat. I told her they probably wouldn’t let me wear one so she gave me a note that allowed me to wear a hat. I went back to wearing a cowboy hat and have been wearing one ever since. I enjoy wearing a cowboy hat in So. Cal. and the little kids just get a kick when they see a “ cowboy”. I tell them I did work with cows and horses but I drive a truck. They get a kick out of that. ( God bless Chris LeDoux)
I remember the first time I visited Florida with friends (we were coming from the UK), we all bought hats and they all bought baseball caps while I being a little older bought a panama jack hat (I know it's not a cowboy hat as such), my friends all got sunburn on their ears and necks while I didn't, also I noticed that people treated me like an adult while my friends got carded a lot more than I did.
@Faris T They were asked for ID, proof of age, we were all over 25 but when we went out to drink they got asked for ID and I didn't, and I'm only two years older than them.
Just remember my friend, you are a citizen of the Kingdom of God and a dear brother in Christ. We don't win here. Even in America. But yeah, if all us Christians live for Him, things will change for the better. And this is STILL the best country this Earth has ever known.

Boy you ain't wrong about us being outlaws in today's time. And we know exactly who we are. And we need to stick together and keep America, America! Plus when you put that hat on your immediately 50% more badass!
Thank you for this message. We appreciate your comments about the quality of folks who wear the Cowboy Hat.... here, in Newport Beach, CA.... I wear a black 30x Larry Mahan, Dan Post Boots, and Wrangler dark wash jeans....I do so as a reminder of what this symbolizes and to make a statement without making a statement ... as a former Airborne Ranger, I wear this with pride so "they" know...... "we" are here .....and are going nowhere. God bless.
I have a few cowboy hats. Black felt that I have been wearing all this winter. I bought it about 6 yrs ago and wore it a little but stopped. 2 yrs ago I got a white straw hat and wore it during the summer while working outside. I bought a palm leaf hat recently to wear when it’s raining and it keeps my head dry and I don’t get my black felt wet if I’m out in the rain a lot. I enjoy wearing my cowboy hats now and it does make you more proud and feel more patriotic. Also my father-in-law is a preacher. He retired from full time preaching but he is still a preacher at our cowboy church here in Guilford County, NC. Thanks for this video and I agree with you totally!!
I just stared wearing again. I had a stroke.and I go to physical therapy at a horse ranch . I forgot all hat etiquette for women I have 6 beautiful wool and felt hats can you please. I would very much appreciate it. Your so good and you speak nice even . No talking fast. Nice calm. I understand. I love the notes.
Hi Jeanie, I just saw your comment. It's pretty much the same as for men, but women don't usually "tip" their hats - exept to flirt! LOL! Glad you're wearing your hats again! Good luck with your rehab!
Good Video. Getting back to my cowboy hats since I bought my Ranch about 3 yrs back. I'm at Peace and Loving it. Respect and Morals. Mississippi Country Boy
My dad has been wearing Western boots and hats since I was a kid. the older I get the more I want to wear boots and hats. 🤠 You are absolutely right, American Heroes wear cowboy hats!!
Moving to Cheyenne from Little Rock. Born and raised in a little town in Alabama. Wyoming is cowboy country and got my first hat (black Cattleman’s) with boots at a local store. Military and Law Enforcement all my life, so I’ve seen my share of cowboy hats but never had one myself. I appreciate this info as I wasn’t privy to all of it. This is the American way. A classic rugged style that commands respect but garners intrigue all the same.
I had a Stetson BSA Expedition that I wore for a little over a year before I lost it on vacation. Have now gotten a Stetson Sturgis (same basic style, a dark brown felt crushable, but better quality than the out of production Expedition), and after a month without having my hat, it feels *right* to have it back again. I do get a fair number of compliments wearing it in Western NC, and it just feels good to wear, especially with the weather we have out here.
I'm one of the few who wears a cowboy hat where I live in the northeast. I found it interesting listening to your take on it. I did know a lot of the etiquette but learned a few things too. Hats off to your cool video.
I've been wearing cowboy hats for years. I enjoyed the video! 1. If I mucked out stalled or some other dirty chores, I take that hat off at the dinner table. If it's a nice clean dress hat I wear it. Trying to find a place on the table for it where there is no chance for it becoming soiled with food and drink is just about impossible. Chefs wear hats when cooking because its more sanitary. People working in fast food resaurants wear hats for the same reason. The flag, funerals, wedding etc. of course I remove my hat out of respect. 2. Two of my felt hats have belt/buckle style hat bands. I like to put a couple of playing cards in the hatband, but the way it is attached to the hat I cannnot fit the cards on the left side. So I wear them on the right. I am thinking about putting a cowboy toothpick on the right side so I am at least partially correct. Your thoughts?
I always take my hat off inside at home, whether at the dinner table or not. At restaurants without hat racks, I either leave it in the truck or put it under my chair. I don't put anything in my hatbands.
Haven't worn a cowboy hat in 20 years. Last week during a rain out i decided I needed new boot and went shopping. I didn't get the boots but picked up a straw and felt hat. I forgot how good it feels to wear a nice hat. I had also forgot about the bed and luck superstitions, thank you for that.
When I get a new felt hat, the first thing I do is take a bic razor to it and clean it up. I wear a black felt year round. A felt hat is okay to wear year round, formal or informal. A straw hat of for summer time and informal. I was always thought to take it off by the crown, which I hate so I take off by the brim.
I'm 47. I hadn't wore a hat on a regular basis since I was in highschool. You are right about a hat presenting expectations bof the wearer as someone with some knowledge about morals and such. Men in my family wear cowboy hats. They say it's our heritage. I too have got out the hats recently decided to spend a bit more time in them. Gotta pass it down to my boys. Also my brother will pull over and take his hat off when he is passed by a funeral procession. Also we pass on hats in our family too. My dad has my grandpa's from the 40s or 50s. He always wore a tiny brimmed cowboy hat. Anyway, thank you for the video.
Fantastic, Carlos! That's great about your family handing hats down through the family, and your brother's actions indicate you are a family that should. God bless.
HARD WORK, INDEPENDENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, CODE OF HONOR ; YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. THE COWBOY HAT SENDS AN AMERICAN MESSAGE. I APPRECIATE YOUR WISDOM. MAYBE SOMEDAY WE SHARE A CAMPFIRE AND MEAL.
SELF RELIANCE is another very important character trait. People used to be ashamed to admit they'd taken unemployment benefits or any form of welfare, but the socialists have urged us all to take pride in it. That's upside-down logic. If you're not hunting, find the opportunity. Don't kill anything you wouldn't eat, but learn how to field dress it, butcher it, and cook it. That's a form of self-reliance that will give your wife and kids confidence in you as a provider, even if you work in an office and live in town. You can put food on the table when the store shelves are bare.
Neither am I American, nor do I live in America. I am a German, living in Zambia. But those values you mention in the video are 50% of the reason why I , not long ago, chose to also wear a straw cowboy hat & Boots here (since it's always hot, felt hats are not really necessary here except for maybe 4 weeks in the year^^). Those values are, I feel, even more needed than when you made this video. And I find it easier to explain them to my kids with that certain aura you get from wearing the hats & Boots. 25% are for me bc of the functionality while working in the yard, checking the animals and doing the farming. Yes I could also get the safari kind of hats that are popular here, but next to representing the named values the last 25% are also simply because I like the way it looks. So thank you for the information from this video. I found it very useful.
Last felt cowboy hat I had was a 200X Seratelli. Gave it to my brother for his wedding. Our granddad gave it to me originally. These days I wear a Big Bend palm leaf, if I wear one when I'm out doing the things. A good cowboy hat can get pricey.
@@integrativepreparedness9427 I will probably never have another one that nice myself. Amazing how durable it was though. I put it through the wringer before I had it cleaned and steamed...it looked brand new when I surprised Jeff with it. I imagine it will see many many decades of use before it finally gets retired. Cousin of mine owns a western wear store out in Abilene, and I'm always amazed at the quality (and price) of hats "cowboys" will buy. Usually the best they can (20x to 200x) because as one old cowboy put it..."your hat is not only an extention of who you are but it's your first line of defense against whatever mother nature can throw at you." The palm or a ball cap is more my speed, with a wool watch cap in my pocket
I have an old bangora straw hat that’s probably 30 years old. It’s all yellowed out…but it’s still in good shape. Back in the day, in southeast Texas…one thing we were all adamant about was what hat to wear at what time of year. We wore straw from Easter thru to Labor Day and felt from Labor Day to Easter. It didn’t matter if it was hot or cold, that was our “etiquette”
I am a retired semi driver. I live in Pa., I wear my hats and boots all the time. Two wool for winter, and two different straw for summer. I like you am a big Western fan. I have read hundreds of western novels, and I mean hundreds. I grew up in the fifties, and sixties. Needless to say I was glued to my T.V. Set watch those great T.V. Westerns!
Way back when...the best quality hat one could get was a 7X beaver, and I had one that lasted for years. Over the last 40+ years, with hardhats, uniform hats, berets, welder's helmets, etc. I kinda lost track of the good 'ol cowboy hat. Finally, now retired and with my personal choice ability returned, I started shopping for a GOOD cowboy hat. I was amazed to see ratings as high as 500x. Sounds like model number expansion, not improvement. Anyway, I DO agree that the shovel-front looks more like a stall cleaning tool than a cowboy hat. After I get a new hat, with as much crown and brim as is available, I reshape it to my own wants, ending up with close to a "Gus" with a nice, easy roll around the front and back, with the sides up, not unlike yours in this video, but no quite as steep. Keep up the good work!
Love the video. As an Aussie who wears cowboy hats and boots. You know a man with a nice hat and boots has confidence, self respect and appreciates the good things in life.
Thank you Mr Smith, NH Yankee born (don't hold it against me 🤣) moved to the Mid West (Chicago🤮) 20 years ago, I had never worn one, but this summer while on vacation I picked up a straw and wearing it made me feel different. since then I have picked up a felt and am eyeballing another for more formal occasions. I appreciate your adding to my knowledge on how to wear them and not show any unintentional disrespect, I did learn that i may have been doing so. 😳 so you saved me on that Thanks! I've been watching a lot more videos on this subject (how to wear the hat) and I agree with the message conveyed in this video, thanks again for leading by example our country needs more of that.
Your reason for wanting to wear your Cowboy Hat is right on! As a 5 foot tall female I’ve finally found the one I like. We share the same childhood TV.
I live in Alberta Canada and when the Calgary stampede comes around its always fun to see the people who wear the cowboy style but don't act like the cowboys act. I'm proud to be Albertan and I'm proud to be a cowboy!
@@integrativepreparedness9427 I get ya, it doesn't stop a lot of Albertans but you didn't hear that from me lol. I always love meeting different types of cowboys, whether that's American Canadian Mexican or even cowboys from the UK, always is a pleasure.
@@integrativepreparedness9427 Ever since I got my Stetson cowboy hat, my girlfriend Vera has been calling me her cowboy. I'm Autistic, but she still says that I'm the bravest cowboy in the West by far.
Just moved to Texas from the north to help keep Texas RED, and I’m building my felt hat collection for many of the reasons he mentioned. Keep it real - keep it free - keep your America !
I just moved to Texas from NY. This was really nice to stumble upon because I'd like to have one eventually! Especially since I plan to get into western style horseback riding.
Just recently had and old cowboy hat reshaped with a Montana crease. Then I bought a Stetson with a Gus. And I started wearing my cowboy boots again. Stopped wearing them because I broke my ankle and then I injured the other one but they are well now. I feel good wearing the hats and the boots. Just feels natural.
Interesting. Ive worn hats most of my life- western style, cav slouches before cav slouches were cool, fedoras, straws, even a "jungle helmet" for a time when working under a strong sun. Mostly these days I wear a beret but maintain a selection of fedoras and westerns for outdoor use. Thanks for posting this informative video!
"Nothing says more America than a Cowboy Hat"🇺🇸 No truer words spoken!👍 This gentleman and former LEO said it all so elequently. Thank you for your dedicated service to our country sir! Growing up in Texas, That hat represented confidence in a man, direction, grit, hard work, (cattlemen, ranchers), trust and a protector when it was necessary. Roger that! From a former Navy Veteran and LEO.
I work for a local Sheriff's Office out in ranch county Western Colorado, and my Sheriff just bought us all Stetsons for patrol. I didn't grow up here; I was lucky enough to come here to raise kids. Anyway, I love my hat, but I'm learning the culture. You may have saved me some trouble, my friend, as I've been tugging my brim to passersby regardless of gender! That stops today! Oh Lordy, I would have to step in it somehow.
LOL! Glad I could help! There's nothing like a good hat. People from back east loved to see us in our Stetsons and boots and I'm sure it will be the same for you guys! Take care!👍🏻
Iv had a straw white hat from tractor supply I wear to concerts an fill the under brim with stickers. Looking into getting a nice one. Thanks for the info.
I got myself a Stetson Bozeman the other day. It's already saved me from sudden rain when I didn't have an umbrella. Now I'm wondering where it's been all my life
I'm new to this and I have total respect for the life and it's people. Love the truck in the reflection. Your hat looks great may get one for myself. I'm also getting into Hank Williams Jr as well.
Born in raisin Texas haven't started wearing a cowboy hat since this year on my 40th and I known all of these or most of these etiquette's I guess it's just been embedded into me...but the #1 was always never touch another man's hat... good video btw.
A friend of my dad-they served together in WW11- told me the 'rake' of your hat tells you something of the man wearing it. A young man will wear it different than an older man. A man on the 'prod' will wear it different than a milder man.
Bought a new straw the other day while getting new boots and the lady at register asked if i was in a band. I reckon a button up shirt and a hat makes you instantly a musician.😄
i follow the same rules except i do not take my hat off for meeting a man, lol, i do wear mine in church because it is common for women of my church to have some kind of head covering. i have one hat that is leather, it's not really a cowboy hat, but one from Australia and has a snap on the left side to hold the brim up to the crown.
Great video Brother. Down to Earth and strait forward. Colorado native living in California. Gonna wear my hat more among these city folk. “America is not about saggy pants”😂 Agreed. God Bless
Im a Filipino guy living in LA area. Cowboy hats are NOT common here. I just got my first hat as a novelty while in Texas, and it has been on my head non stop to the point that I feel naked without it.
Well I just got my first hat for my 18th birthday present, considering the fact that I’m from Southern California it doesn’t look like I’ll be wearing my hat in too many places since it relys on the general consensus lol
I bought my first hat and boots in Texas San Antonio I live in California no one wears this stuff here but i’m embracing the cowboy heritage but still going to wear it idc lol
I always wear a hat, and I like Resistol, too. They fit my big head better. And I agree wholeheartedly with the little message toward the last part of the video.
Great pointers, thanks. I have been wearing cowboy hats since I can remember when. There are somethings that some fools have done which I want to bring to you attention. Can you imaging that I was wearing my cowboy hat at a BBQ place while seated outside with friends and a guy from the next table complimented me on my Cattleman cowboy hat, I thanked him and the next thing he said was if he can wear my hat for a bit. To that request, I told him that I don't lend out my hat, my gun, my boots and my truck (horse) to anyone, it is an old cowboy rule. I have noted that in some restaurants there are hat and coat stands and I use them if I find the table will be crowded with my hat on it. I found that in UK where a lot of people do wear hats they keep their hats on their laps, or even on their knees while seating cross legged on a chair. I was in Munich, Germany and I found a lot of hat wearing Bavarians. I hope to see more videos about hats, guns, boots, horses, trucks, muscle cars, western knives and maybe the rules about campfires.
Yes this is why I always loved hat you summed it up nicely. It was awesome listening to this it was like I was sitting there with you listening to a friend. 👍🏼👍🏼. Everything you said that a hat represents is why I think I always loved and respected cowboy hats and I think that’s why I always wanted to wear them to show people could count on me or trust me look up to me i guess but I’m a humble way 😅
Very nice video. I have only in the past year starter wearing western hats. I’ve always wore a baseball cap. But I’ve always liked the western look. I have stetsons and Resistol. Both companies are owned by Hatco . My white straw hat is for summertime it’s cooler it’s air in and out and it’s more comfortable for summer. I have a tope colored Stetson that is my fall and winter time hat. I have a black Stetson for more dress look. And I’m getting ready to buy a white 30 X Stetson hat they call a silver belly. For dress up and going out when I don’t wanna wear the black hat . I also have three pair of boots I am a truck driver so I wear one set of boots in my truck when I’m home on weekends I have an identical pair of boots that I wear then I’ve got a pair of ostrich skin black leather boots for dress. I also have a Montana silversmith belt buckle for a dress.
I'm a groundskeeper in South jersey. I'm gonna try to pull this look off. Will a straw cowboy hat fly off while I'm on the mower or tractor? Anyways, thank you for the info! God bless and keep your powder dry 🤙
Hey Kevin, great to hear from you in Jersey! The hat shouldn't fly off on a tractor unless your tractor is wilder than a bucking bronc or Brahma bull!😄 If you work in high winds, a chinstrap will keep it on. Best of luck!
I want my friends and I to get some Cowboy hats when they come to visit Texas! What material would you suggest for a budget but also durability? Many thanks! They're not opposed to straw either!
Welcome to Texas, neighbor. It's uncommon to see straw hats in cold weather or felt hats in hot weather. Temperatures have been triple-digit here since spring, but it's rarely too cold for a straw hat in central or South Texas. So if you're visiting hat country, choose straw. Then wear those straw hats with pride back home!

Exactly right Saleem!
This is motivational, can’t wait to get my hands on one.

@@dewboy13 no, I don’t even know of I want to live anymore :/ so no hat, they’re kinda pricy for a student and its har to get the right size and all when you live in Europe

There are a lot of things to do with a cowboy hat in daily life.
But the main etiquette of any cowboy hat:
(When you should remove your hat)
1) At Dinner with your family (unless your family says it's okay to wear your hat).
Either hung up on a hat rack or upside down on the crown (never on the brim.)
10) Never touch another man's cowboy hat. It's an unwritten code that you may very well risk your life touching another person's cowboy hat.
Yep.
All have one thing in common. A show of respect.
(Some folks may have to google that.)
11) If a man is spoken for you never put your hat on another woman’s head.
Well said.
But I've seen rule 7 get pretty scary at a Charlie Daniels concert. Lol

Gotta ask where in Wa? We all wore Stetsons in Eastern Wa…mostly farms…wheat and cattle. The west side is a bit retarded though…:P

As a fellow horseman, I agree with your assessment on hats. A big one around my home is no hats at the dinner table. It’s the way that it’s always been. The first thing you say is grace before a meal and you give reverence to the Lord by taking your hat off and bowing your head.
Yep.
Inside at all really

Don't you worry about them, they can say things but you will get more looks from the ladies for sure, only the guys gonna rag on you a little bit until they see how you carry yourself in that hat. That's the best advice I can give for this circumstance as I don't suffer from anxiety but I do live in a northern city on the east coast where you never see cowboy hats or boots being worn... Outstanding, Eddie! Thanks for writing!👍🏻🇺🇸
Thanks! Blessings back!👍🏻
I too have recently begun wearing a cowboy style hat. I’m over the whole ball cap thing. They look like something a kid wears. Real men wear hats. Thanks for the education on etiquette.
Excellent! Welcome!
I live in VA and not many people wear cowboy hats here and I usually just wear mine when I’m outside working but I wore it in a grocery store once recently and I saw a big change in the way people treated me everyone was so much more friendlier
Excellent!
You ought to see how people treat you at the airport in a western hat.
@@integrativepreparedness9427 I’ll keep that in mind!
You usually find a size chart on hat websites such as Resistol or Stetson, but some of these hats are specifically designed for differant shaped heads but they make crushable hats that conform to your head shape these are usually not as durable as a beaver felt hat but an easy way to start
@@terrell48 Ok! Thanks :)

Welcome back!
A bick razor? Never heard of that one.
Great video...thanks from all of us in Houston
Thanks Mike. Best to you all.
Totally agree with what he said, when I put on my cowboy hat I feel like I can take on the world..
Yep!

Cousin of mine owns a western wear store out in Abilene, and I'm always amazed at the quality (and price) of hats "cowboys" will buy. Usually the best they can (20x to 200x) because as one old cowboy put it..."your hat is not only an extention of who you are but it's your first line of defense against whatever mother nature can throw at you."

Back in the day, in southeast Texas…one thing we were all adamant about was what hat to wear at what time of year. We wore straw from Easter thru to Labor Day and felt from Labor Day to Easter. It didn’t matter if it was hot or cold, that was our “etiquette”

Thanks Jack.👍🏻
America! God Bless You Sir
And may He bless you back.👍🏻🇺🇸
Love the video. As an Aussie who wears cowboy hats and boots. You know a man with a nice hat and boots has confidence, self respect and appreciates the good things in life.
👍🏻
An an Aussie living in the US for 35 yrs, I love this country, and love my cowboy boots and hats.
Great to have you onboard! This country needs more men who want to go back to traditional ways!
Your reason for wanting to wear your Cowboy Hat is right on! As a 5 foot tall female I’ve finally found the one I like. We share the same childhood TV.
Outstanding!
Great video friend. Awesome words of advice God bless you and your family
Thanks Chris, and you and yours.
I live in Alberta Canada and when the Calgary stampede comes around its always fun to see the people who wear the cowboy style but don't act like the cowboys act. I'm proud to be Albertan and I'm proud to be a cowboy!
LOL! Yeah, playing "dress up". Always wanted to get up to the Stampede, but I won't go where I can't carry a gun.
@@integrativepreparedness9427 I get ya, it doesn't stop a lot of Albertans but you didn't hear that from me lol. I always love meeting different types of cowboys, whether that's American Canadian Mexican or even cowboys from the UK, always is a pleasure.
I've been growing up with 'Gunsmoke', 'The Good The Bad and the Ugly', 'The lone Ranger', and the gunfighter ballads by Marty Robbins.
Can't beat that!
@@integrativepreparedness9427 Ever since I got my Stetson cowboy hat, my girlfriend Vera has been calling me her cowboy. I'm Autistic, but she still says that I'm the bravest cowboy in the West by far.
@@Trey_816 She sounds like a great girlfriend!👍🏻
@@integrativepreparedness9427 Oh yeah. Vera, me, her Dad have a shared love of cowboys and guns.
Thank you. Much luck and blessings.
Thanks, Carter. You too.
Just moved to Texas from the north to help keep Texas RED, and I’m building my felt hat collection for many of the reasons he mentioned. Keep it real - keep it free - keep your America !
Outstanding!👍🏻
We’re happy to have ya here partner 🇺🇸
I just moved to Texas from NY. This was really nice to stumble upon because I'd like to have one eventually! Especially since I plan to get into western style horseback riding.
Good deal! Welcome to the west!👍🏻
@@integrativepreparedness9427 thank you!
Welcome back!👍🏻
Interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it.
You don't do that to another man🤣
Excellent video brother! Just bought my first cowboy hat and love it.
Excellent! Get ready for people to start holding doors open for you!😂
@@integrativepreparedness9427 🤣🤣🤣
"Nothing says more America than a Cowboy Hat"🇺🇸
No truer words spoken!👍
This gentleman and former LEO said it all so elequently. Thank you for your dedicated service to our country sir!
Growing up in Texas, That hat represented confidence in a man, direction, grit, hard work, (cattlemen, ranchers), trust and a protector when it was necessary.
Roger that!
From a former Navy Veteran and LEO.
Thanks David. Great to hear from you!👍🏻🇺🇸
Ioved cowboy dress ever since I worked with horses as a kid. I miss my hat and boots 😢
Better get some new ones!
Hard to find a more iconic item of Americana than a cowboy hat. Additionally most all are made in gods gift to the world.....Texas!
Very true!
I've been wearing a cowboy hat for just over 40 years. When I'm outdoors I feel naked with out it.
@@nickedwards212 👍🏻
Good video. You shared a lot of wisdom not just about hats. I agree with what you said about our country.
👍🏻
Same way I wear my felts.
Looking sharp sir.
Thanks Juan!
You're welcome.
Born and raised in Tennessee, my only rules don't touch my hat, don't ask to wear my hat
Rule number one!
I got myself a Stetson Bozeman the other day. It's already saved me from sudden rain when I didn't have an umbrella. Now I'm wondering where it's been all my life
LOL! Excellent! Great hat!
I'm new to this and I have total respect for the life and it's people. Love the truck in the reflection. Your hat looks great may get one for myself. I'm also getting into Hank Williams Jr as well.
Welcome!
Born in raisin Texas haven't started wearing a cowboy hat since this year on my 40th and I known all of these or most of these etiquette's I guess it's just been embedded into me...but the #1 was always never touch another man's hat... good video btw.
Thanks. Yep, I should have mentioned that one.
A friend of my dad-they served together in WW11- told me the 'rake' of your hat tells you something of the man wearing it. A young man will wear it different than an older man. A man on the 'prod' will wear it different than a milder man.
Very true.👍🏻
Bought a new straw the other day while getting new boots and the lady at register asked if i was in a band. I reckon a button up shirt and a hat makes you instantly a musician.😄
LOL!
I wish I was a cowboy.
Even tho I'm not, I'll still wear a hat and some boots with pride.
Good for you, buddy!👍🏻
i follow the same rules except i do not take my hat off for meeting a man, lol, i do wear mine in church because it is common for women of my church to have some kind of head covering. i have one hat that is leather, it's not really a cowboy hat, but one from Australia and has a snap on the left side to hold the brim up to the crown.
Thanks for your input, Ms.!👍🏻
Great video Brother. Down to Earth and strait forward. Colorado native living in California. Gonna wear my hat more among these city folk. “America is not about saggy pants”😂 Agreed. God Bless
👍🏻😄🇺🇸
Im a Filipino guy living in LA area. Cowboy hats are NOT common here. I just got my first hat as a novelty while in Texas, and it has been on my head non stop to the point that I feel naked without it.
@@geomardomingo1672 Excellent!👍🏻
Don’t touch another man’s hat
Well I just got my first hat for my 18th birthday present, considering the fact that I’m from Southern California it doesn’t look like I’ll be wearing my hat in too many places since it relys on the general consensus lol
With a name like Austin Montgomery, you ought to be wearing your hat EVERYWHERE!😀
Nice hat! I just, well wife bought my first hat! Thank you for video...
Wear it well Miguel!👍🏻
Resistols are good hats!!
Yes they are.👍🏻
I bought my first hat and boots in Texas San Antonio I live in California no one wears this stuff here but i’m embracing the cowboy heritage but still going to wear it idc lol
Outstanding!
I always wear a hat, and I like Resistol, too. They fit my big head better. And I agree wholeheartedly with the little message toward the last part of the video.
👍🏻
Been wearing cowboy shit more recently. Grew up half my childhood in Lubbock so when I wear it I feel kind of at home
Excellent. I had family in Lubbock.
This video definitely motivated me today! God Bless 🇺🇸!!!
God bless you back, Tony.👍🏻🇺🇸
👍🏻
Yes this is why I always loved hat you summed it up nicely. It was awesome listening to this it was like I was sitting there with you listening to a friend. 👍🏼👍🏼. Everything you said that a hat represents is why I think I always loved and respected cowboy hats and I think that’s why I always wanted to wear them to show people could count on me or trust me look up to me i guess but I’m a humble way 😅
Recently moved to South Texas. This was really helpful and insightful, subscribed!
Welcome!
Bit late to this lesson but I appreciate the wisdom shared, much obliged sir
You bet.👍🏻
You're well set up, Mark! Great hats, and Montana Silversmiths makes beautiful stuff! Thanks for writing!
@@integrativepreparedness9427 haha! I get down a little on my Kubota. I'll try to behave 😄
I want my friends and I to get some Cowboy hats when they come to visit Texas! What material would you suggest for a budget but also durability? Many thanks! They're not opposed to straw either!
Straws are less expensive than felt, but you can find some decent entry level Celts at Cavenders for under $100. Good luck.👍🏻
