1x1 rib stitch. Adds elasticity and allows for a wider range of head sizes being accommodated by one product. The beige hat is knit in a finer yarn than the second one which means it's a bit thinner, sleeker looking, has more drape (not as stiff if a fabric) and doesn't add too much width when cuffed. The second one is just bulkier looking and because it's a thicker fabric it probably doesn't want to lay as nicely on the head.

Ive luckily found my perfect fishermans beanie and absolutely love it. Literally my most worn item out of everything i own😂😂. Hopefully lots of people find this video useful.
Several people suggest that the style of knit that you like is called "ribbed," but I think what you really like is the fact that the knitting is adjusted to wrap around the end of the segment of the beanie to be parallel to the seam. This makes the seam much neater and it will lie flatter than if the segments of the hat are simply sewn against each other, as in the case of the cheap beanie I'm wearing at the moment. This technique is called "fully fashioned," indicating that the segments are knit into their final form, not merely cut. You'll see it on the shoulders of sweaters, too, if they are well made.
@@HarryHas oh also the stitching that you referred to on the beanie you like is fisherman's rib, and the main difference between the black one and the cream one is the thickness/weight of the yarn used (from what I can tell). Dope video btw!
4:56 As a knitter, I would call this a ribbed beanie (or maybe brioche beanie) with some crown shaping, I would also specify that it’s long because the shorter alternative is a fisherman’s hat
Where I live, Colorado USA, slouchy beanies are still common -- lots of mountaineers & hipsters here. Btw, my hair has thinned greatly, so while I once wore beanies only in winter for warmth, I now wear beanies, berets and fedoras year round. liked & subscribed!!!
@Swatty thanx, haven't lost THAT much on top -- I have a male pattern thinning characteristic of men in the eastern mediterranean area (Greece, Turkey, Balkans) -- proud of my lineage!
You’re definitely right about the difficulty of finding a beanie that fits and looks like you want. The beanie pattern in question is called ribbed knit or ribbed beanie I believe.
Thanks for the tips, Harry! I had written off beanies years ago, but now I realize I just haven't understood all of the different variations. I'm definitely going to try on more bc I would dread walking past the perfect beanie for me without having even trying it..

I need to find one now before my head freezes.
I'm pale, skinny and short-haired. After years of trying on beanies and looking like a chemo patient in them, I finally found a nice woolly one! It's huge (but not slouchy) and has this enormous pompom on top...like 80's style but in civilized colours 😅
i have had 2 beanies i actually liked, the first was a purple one my grandmother got for me during her trip back home to the UK, it was stolen from me, i can understand why it was very beautiful, i had a friend steal a beanie for me a few years back when i was a little delinquent, and kept it up until recently when i tried it on, and it looks the same as my old purple one did on me, i think that beanies are hats that are meant for you to just sort of find, and gel with, and then live with, you dont ever acquire a beanie, it acquires you
It's very subjective on the face shape and rest of the outfit and hair/ears. I only like a few bold ones with the cuff, but often prefer the thinner type materials as they look a bit smarter and less distracting. But yes its hard to find a good fit/color/fabric combo. I accidentally put my favourite wool one in the washing machine and it shrunked !
Thanks for the analysis. I’ve been having the same struggle, stuck in my early 2000s style beanies trying to modernize to a newer look at is just as good.
Your video fascinated me. Your perspective on how beanies fit will influence my knitting. I am @hatsbyjeanne and I've hand knit & donated hundreds beanies/toques/ hats for soldiers, sailors and veterans (through Warmth For Warriors, and Hats For Sailors). I typically knit hats 9" high and they can be pulled down snug and cover the ears (good under a helmet) or slightly higher, if preferred, for fashion. One thing you didn't mention was fiber. Choose natural fibers. I use 100% wool. It is washable, wears like iron, but is soft & squishy. Another thing you didn't mention was cost. One could save money by knitting their own beanies. A skein of wool is maybe $7 -$15 dollars, a set of 16" US circular needles is maybe $12. My fave beginner patterns are The Bankhead Hat and The Boyfriend Beanie.
Hairstyle and outfit Matters alot for me as well. When I have a streetstyle obersized outfit a longer beanie adds more height, since the baggy clothing makes me look smaller. For more clean tight clothing I add a more tight beanie.
I can relate and I'm a woman. Still hunting that perfect beanie that would look good on me. Nice video, makes me feel better that I am not the only one having issue with a beanie. 🤣
Same. They make my head look so tiny. Like a bald cap. I need a thicker one, which are apparently not trendy because most shops have the thinner ones only.
@@AngelaEAwesome I like thicker ones too! I learned how to crochet and made a chunky slouchy one and it's the only beanie I've ever had that looks good on me. Worth it!
i personally think the fisherman beanies look better on you than the one that you prefer, especially how that blue one fits (not a fan of the super bright color but rather how it fits)
My whole life I just assumed I can’t wear beanies because they’ve all looked weird. Different hairstyles and all. Heads too round, foreheads too big, ears too high, idk. But I recently put on a beanie to prove that point and it actually looked ok. The only beanie in the world that works for me and i found it in my late twenties! Still probably never going to wear it though
Not sure of the general consensus but I'm loving the camera transition when you're giving additional info. It makes the video more lively in my opinion than just talking at the same angle (that's not to say that's bad either).
Another knitter here. The style that you like is a ribbed hat, more specifically a well-defined rib that looks like a twisted rib or even a brioche rib. The way the hat is machine or hand knit makes a huge difference too. Like in hand knit beanies, there are decreases in the crown of the hat that follow the head, better than lumpy seams, and definitely affects fit.
I have a somewhat similar hairstyle to you, except my combover is a little taller/longer, so I was shocked when you said “don’t slouch” as that’s the only way to keep a little of my combover in the look. I personally do NOT like the “nipple beanie” style with sag above the head, I’d take some slouch over hobo-core any day
This was very interesting. My hair is quite fluffy and curly and it makes it hard to find a beanie that looks good because I think it looks awkward where it smooshes my hair down and poofs back out. Looser fitting ones are better but still not perfect :/
STILL on the hunt for a beanie that I feel suits me since I had my hair cut, or just headwear in general to be honest 😂!! This vid is definitely going to help though haha!!
Never seen the thumbs light up when the person in the video asks for the audience to like the video. That was super cool and now I'm wondering why no other videos do it?
Harry, thank you SO much for this video! It’s finally cooling down where I live so I’m bringing out my beanies, and I‘ve been thinking this whole week that I need to look up the right way to wear a beanie and why I don’t feel right wearing certain ones. Kept forgetting/pushing it off until I opened up UA-cam today and saw this. You’re awesome man, thank you so much 🙏🏼 love your videos!
I love ending up on oddly specific fashion YT. The only beinnies I have are ones I’ve made myself. I’m not one for fashion so I really enjoy the lil slack back and pompom. It isn’t particularly cold most of tHe time where I am so it is more of a “winter”look for me
I used to wear beanies more but when it comes to warmth and knowing it'll look okay no trouble- I just grab one of those hats with the flaps (I forget what they're called but lumberjacks and Russians stareotypically wear them)
I stumbled into this video looking for a beanie pattern to crochet for my son, and now I’m questioning everything I know about shaping the fit… Happy Holidays! ❤
Fun topic! I have a beanie that creeps down to my eyes and makes me look like a gnome. I use it anyway, but I hate to see my reflection when I wear it. (I might consider one with a cuff next time, though.)
I love beanies, their my go to hat. But once I started rocking my curls it was a challenge to fit the two together. Now that I have locs I find that beanies are a little tighter and i have to actually think about tightness, stretch, and slack. It's really made me think about how hard finding the right beanie can be lol. Currently I always stick with my Corpse beanie cuz it has the perfect amount of stretch and slack. As my hair gets longer and thicker all the others hats get looked at funny lol
Ahh yes I've been becoming more self conscious about I look in a beanie and have refrained until I find the perfect fit. Even refraining from wearing a hat because I get more compliments from not using one but I still like them.
Bro how do you articulate all of these little details? It’s kind of mind-blowing to see all of this spelled out. Never thought I would subscribe to anything fashion-related, but this really is a great video, and I’ll probably check out your other stuff too
Honestly, idk what it is, but the only beanie I feel like the only beanies that look good on me are the slouch ones. I feel like it's how I wear my hair or just the aesthetic.
Not exactly beanie specific, but I really appreciated your point about online sellers needing to show their product on a person. It drives me crazy when purse sellers neglect to show their products on models! I've almost bought a purse until I saw the picture of it on a model. It was too big! Shoppers need those perspectives.
Wish me luck, just bought a beanie online after searching for days. It'll be here in afew days and I'm excited. Thanks for the vid! I'm convinced if this beanie doesn't work out for me, no beanie for me 😢
Came to see how to wear the beanie I got for Xmas. Watched twice, first time for the comical, second time for the instructional side. Awesome movie, man.
Got literally 12 beanies and only wear 1. When you find the 1 you don't let go. But even then on some days you don't like how it fits..so you keep searching...every time I see the beanie at a store...I see the perfect thickness.and try it on. Always ends up failing me in the way it fits. The search continues...maybe a lifelong search for the 1...thank you for this video I never knew I needed. Beanie lovers and seekers...unite
You could also lower the cuff on your beanie if you want to add height. You could also change its position on your head. I have a fade, so when i have a fresh cut I like to wear mine about 1in or 25mm (i got yall) above my hairline on the front and just above the crown on the back (you can go just below the crown if you like as well). If my hair hasnt been cut in a while i just start at my hair line and wear it regularly.
Colour will also be very important, especially with anything you are putting close or around your face. The same hat can be absolutely the same but one in a different colour that doesn't suit your personal colouring will just look a bit off.
I'm not sure if anyone has already answered your question about the knit stitch (only scrolled partially down), but I think it may be the Stockinette stitch. One knit, one purl that results in a ribbed pattern. Cheers.

@@AngelaEAwesome I like thicker ones too! I learned how to crochet and made a chunky slouchy one and it's the only beanie I've ever had that looks good on me. Worth it!
That black beanie just needed to be rearranged a bit and it would look just as good as the beige one.
the black looks good on you bro
i personally think the fisherman beanies look better on you than the one that you prefer, especially how that blue one fits (not a fan of the super bright color but rather how it fits)
Actually, the black one suits you even better than the beige on the first clip.
Early club assemble.

That black beanie did not look bad at all. Just needs some adjusting or shaping it to your head for a better fit.
Exactly what i was goin say😅
Very informative and useful information. Thanks so much!❤
STILL on the hunt for a beanie that I feel suits me since I had my hair cut, or just headwear in general to be honest 😂!! This vid is definitely going to help though haha!!
It’s a very hard thing to find mate. Thanks for watching 👍🙏
My favourite one I found is made by this brand called coal. It’s the perfect thickness
My favorite is a Pacific Headwear Tweed Beanie :) (I think p600?) Super cool ribbed texture and medium-heavy weight
1:17 that beanie lamp in the background is listening intently.
If it's so warm you don't need a beanie to cover your ears but you're going to wear one anyway, I think it's unavoidable to look silly.
Tbh you pull all of these beanies off. Love ur sense of humor :-)
Harry Has used to rock the Jesse Pinkman Beanie I’m dying 😂😂😂😂😂😂
By far your best video: funny as hell, concise and full of tips
Great video Harry. Can we get a "beanie" count on this video, I swear I heard the word "beanie" at least 100 times in this one 😂
I’m not gonna count haha. It is a video on beanies so the word is probably going to feature quite a bit 😂
Never seen the thumbs light up when the person in the video asks for the audience to like the video. That was super cool and now I'm wondering why no other videos do it?
I love the slouchy beanie look. I don’t care if its not trendy anymore either. They look good on everyone if done right
Yeah my boyfriend Jay does that look and I think he looks nice like that, I mean he looks nice anyway but something about the look is cute❤❤
@harryhas that black beanie looks good on you man. Should rock it.
I like a black beanie in that style but the shape wasn’t right up too
*top
Harry, thank you SO much for this video! It’s finally cooling down where I live so I’m bringing out my beanies, and I‘ve been thinking this whole week that I need to look up the right way to wear a beanie and why I don’t feel right wearing certain ones. Kept forgetting/pushing it off until I opened up UA-cam today and saw this. You’re awesome man, thank you so much 🙏🏼 love your videos!
So pleased to hear mate. Thanks for watching
Hope i never spend a week thinking about how to wear a beanie lol
Needed this video! 🫡
I have a few beanies with no cuff and they look awesome. It depends on how the beanie is made and what kinda material they're made from.
(I might consider one with a cuff next time, though.)
i moved to chicago and i need to wear a beanie, but historically, i look so bad in beanies. I'm buying all sorts and trying them on...
I'm sure you look good in anything 😊
Cuffless beanies look way better, and the slouchy ones that hang pointy off the back are modern day wizard hats (in a good way)
Neff makes the best beanies hands down, been wearing them for years.
For us in Michigan, they were mostly just to keep warm in the winter for walks. I guess they are for fashion too but it got really cold!
Never thought I would subscribe to anything fashion-related, but this really is a great video, and I’ll probably check out your other stuff too
The chunky beanie looks incredible on the guy in the picture. And hand knit always looks better.
1:46 lol how disappointed they look proves his point.
Never thought I’d be taking “how to wear beanie’s” advice from Roy Kent but here we are, and I loved every second of it haha
Dude, I love your sense of humor in this video! This was both fun and informative to watch.
Wish me luck, just bought a beanie online after searching for days. It'll be here in afew days and I'm excited. Thanks for the vid! I'm convinced if this beanie doesn't work out for me, no beanie for me 😢
turns out it's the best beanie I've ever owned in my life and it's amazing
Dude! Slouchy beanies are awesome ⭐️
What a wicked video!.I am obsessedwith knitting all sorts of beanies and u popped up in my feed....loved this!...excellent advice!.
I loved all the logical reasoning here. You are indeed a man of reasons.
this isn't a guide I thought I needed, but I was entranced the whole way through
Love your humour bro
A cuffless beanie is good for sports. For example for hiking, jogging, even climbing when it's cold and you need one that fits under the helmet
Dang, didn't know I need this, but I did. Thanks yo
Cheers.
Gotta say man you like fine in most things you say you don't. It really just comes down to preference and confidence to wear what you want.
