  • This is how you change the oil of a 2016-2019 Mazda CX 9 2.5 liter turbo. I apologize for not getting the right shot angles for better view of the Oil filter and drain plug under the vehicle, but you get the idea.
    Important things to note:
    - Oil Capacity is 5.1 qts
    - Full Synthetic Oil recommended 5w-30
    - Take a picture of your receipt, oil and oil filter for record keeping.
    - Use an 8 mm Hex socket to take out oil drain plug.
Please go to an oil recycling station to dump the oil. Save the environment.

It tells you but it's not easy to find. 9-4 fluids.

Just so you know the 2019 Turbo uses a 17mm socket for the drain plug.

I did this on my 2019 CX-9 yesterday. I needed a phillips screwdriver, a flat screwdriver, a 17 mm wrench and oil filter wrench. The access panel is close to the center of the car, well behind the front wheels. The plastic rivets are not all the same size. The middle one is larger than the other two, so pay attention when you take them out so you put them back in the correct holes. Pretty straight forward job, but due to the size of the car I had to use a stand to get up high enough to fill oil back in the car and I'm 6'0 tall. I used ramps to get the car up high enough to crawl under easily. Since the access panel is so far back, I'm not sure a jack/stands will get the car up high enough. This was the car's first oil change and I used Mobil I full synthetic 5/30. After I replaced the oil and started the car, I noticed the sound coming from the tail pipe had changed. It was cutting off the compressions so tight it actually hurt my ears (kinda like leaving a window in the back seat down while driving). When resetting the maintenance message I noticed there was an option for a "flexible" instead of "fixed" setting for the oil. When choosing flexible it specifies Mazda oil only. Anyone know the difference between Mazda oil/filter and all the other brands?

Thank you for your input Ed! I don't even see "flexible" option setting for Oil change interval. It could be the 2019 Mazda's software are now different from the 2016 models. Of course the OEM Oil filter could be the better kind. Somehow the aftermarket Filters are working just fine. I just buy the more expensive kind just to be safe.

Update on 2019 far enough along to have heads up display and carplay android auto, My GT AWD the oil plug was a normal 17mm bolt. The cover screws were Phillips/8mm bolt I think that's the same.

The .1 quart. I feel like a few more hours at the table could have made the engine take a normal amount.

I know this is now a very old video/thread - I am curious as to the size/weight of the jack stands and jack... this is a 4.4ton vehical... most jacks are 2-3ton, would I have to purchase a 4ton jack and jack stands to do a job like this?

Hi, am looking to buy a used cx9 2016 or newer. Any reliability issue and any tips to look out for? If given a choice, would you still buy a CX9? Thks

I have 30k miles so far in my 2016 and so far no issues. Very reliable. Two things I don't like at least on my 2016 cx9 is the infotainment starts up so slow. The 2017 and current models probably has improved the responsiveness of the infotainment. The other thing I don't like is the way you fold the second row seats, I would always have to do it for my passengers that aren't familiar with it. It could have been designed better.

My 2019 CX-5 non-turbo says to use 0W-20 on the oil cap.

Archie The Dog correct. The non turbo skyactiv gas use 0-20. The turbos use 5-30.

I am not so sure, but please follow the manufacturer's recommended oil from the manual. As general practice, I use synthetic as its viscosity holds up longer than non-synthetic. I normally will change my oil around every 5k miles

In all due respect, this was painful to watch. This almost 12 minute video should have been 3 minutes. Cover the basics...everyone knows how to unscrew a drain plug and oil filter. Couple of tips: get some car ramps...much faster and safer than jack stands, if you're using Mobil 1, why not spring for the excellent Mobil 1 oil filter? Oil capacity 5.1 qts? Dump in a 5 qt jug and call it a day.

    • @jameson3593

@@MikzX what ramps are you using??? I drive a 2017 Giulia that is lowered and it can drive up ramps.

5 qt jug left mine about 1/2 a quart short. So you really need about 5.5 quarts with a filter change.

Its a turbo so you will need to use conventional oil not full synthetic oil.
