I have had three vehicles in my life time. I serviced them all. A 1996 Ford Taurus that I sold with 219k miles. Original engine and trans. A 2010 Ford Escape with 182k miles that I gave to my daughter - she’s still driving it- original engine and trans. I now have a 2016 with 42k miles. Change oil at 3k miles and have always filled the oil filter. No issues.

In 44 years of changing oil, I have never once filled the oil filter. I've known numerous mechanics who have never filled the oil filter. In many vehicles, it not even possible.

Didn't look to see if it was mentioned in previous posts, but first make sure you can get the oil filter off (some can be stuck on beyond what you would think is humanly possible) before opening the drain plug.

I've always filled the oil filter. But I always heard the reason was to "prime" it so the engine didn't have to pump the oil in on first start up and avoid air in the oil lines. But looking at this one, with it being at the very bottom and pointed down, gravity should feed the oil right into it without pre-filling it, right? I also wonder if that's why Mazda says 5.1 quarts, with the extra 1/10th being to fill the oil filter?

I wonder if Mazda factored in filling up the oil filter when they came up with the 5.1 quart number. Seems like that .1 is pretty much what the filter would hold but I could be wrong....

My owner's manual says to use Genuine Mazda Oil. Is that conventional or synthetic? So, does Mazda require synthetic oil in its engines? @@KevinNadeau Dealer told me it has to do with the turbo, the "genuine" Mazda oil is definitely not full synthetic. Mazda sells a full synthetic oil that is printed right on the bottle. However, it may be a synthetic blend. I just have been doing what they advise, don't want my warranty voided for using the incorrect oil.
