I just want to make sure this is here for anyone buying one of these like i did. I got a 2013 cx-9 with 110k. Its now at 170k and the Transfer Case just broke to the point that it locked the wheels while driving... this is after i spent my last dollar buying the parts so my father in law could put the engine bacl together after the water pump failed. This was an amazingly well driving car that i loved but this is a warning to be mechanically inclined or know someone who is before bothering with these.
The bigger issue is the water pump. No way of knowing if the internal gaskets have failed until your engine fails, since the timing chain runs the water pump and when it goes, the coolant ends up mixing with the engine oil. If it is caught it’s the entire front subframe and engine out job just to replace the water pump. Four figure bill.
Common problems Brake booster Window motors Water pump failure (loss of coolant) Ignition coils Transfer case failure Cooling fans stay on cause of blower relay Front wheel bearings Torque converter shuddering in and out of lockup on the highway Drive shaft bushing wear causing vibration Have also had a few where the pcm randomly fails and causes a crank no start
Fortunately, I have a 2014 CX-9 and haven’t had any of those issues. The reoccurring issue has been the window regulators stripping and the automatic windows stop working. I’ve replaced four of those so far. After 8 years of ownership and 160k miles later my CX-9 has mostly trouble free. Hopefully by 2014 Mazda has worked out most of the issues of this generation.
Everything in this video is great except for the transmission part. I have a 2011 CX-9 and the TRANSMISSION IS NOT A SEALED UNIT AND IT IS SUPER EASY TO CHANGE THE FLUID EVEN THOUGH THERE'S NO DIPSTICK UNDER THE HOOD, I change my fluid every 15K miles using only the EXACT CORRECT FLUID AND NOT SOME ONE FLUID WORKS IN EVERYTHING. I have close to 200K on mine and the transmission shifts flawlessly. There was a TSB on the transmission rough shift and that was covered under the warranty when these cars were new and it was a simple reprogramming of the TCM Transmission Control Module.
Absolutely. I use only the exact OEM ATF marketed by the transmission manufacturer, AISIN, less than half the price of the same thing rebranded Mazda. There's no filter to change and no pan to drop, couldn't be easier, plus I installed the manufacturer deleted under hood ATF dip stick and tubing.
I own this model cx9. Surprise the brake booster didn't make the list. My was fairly low mileage, 2011 currently at 70k miles. Boost went bad around the 50k mark. Other issue was the cam solenoid. Other than that, cars been reliable
I have a 2010 CX-9 FWD Touring with 161K miles. I live in the lake effect snow area with lots of road salt, and its been pretty reliable. Exceptions are window motors, I'm on second driver door handle, and I had to replace liftgate handle because the mechanism was completed rusted. My SiriusXM satellite antenna on the roof no longer works, I didn't want to replace since it means removing the headliner. I can only pickup SiriusXM from local terrestrial repeaters so limited usefulness. The bluetooth on the factory head unit (mine is the upgraded model with small screen for backup camera) is no longer compatible with modern iPhones - so I've had to start using 3.5mm aux jack. It still works with ancient iPhones, so seems to be a protocol compatibility issue. I recently had an exhaust leak patched due to rusted exhaust pipes, but original muffers and original resonator look great despite all the years of road salt.
Thanks I had that squeaky noise and they changed the strut but it still made the noise. They had to grease up a few things so tomorrow I'm going to find out exactly how they fixed it. Kinda of regret buying a Mazda from a Toyota dealership. I'll keep you guys posted.
Have 2014 and two of your issues you nailed. Wheel bearings. This thing has gone through at least four bearings. Other issue is the water issue. The sunroof design is horrible. The last big issue with this vehicle, which wasn't mentioned in this video, was the fact that many of the parts in this car are not made by Mazda, but by Ford.
My 2012 has a transfer box that gets too hot and burns the lubricant (if that’s the right term) and required a 4k fix. I’ve also had misfires on two different cylinders.
It would be incredibly helpful to include information such as; -At what mile ranges do these issues typically start to occur?? -How long it takes to perform the repairs with mild experience levels Thank you👌🏻
Mazda is very reliable imo. Almost every car has their problems. As a consumer I’m still surprised no manufacturer can build a vehicle that doesn’t end up with recalls. As long as they been making cars it’s unreal. But I guess mechanics would be out of business if they did.
210 on my 09 CX-9 only issues are owner errors. i had to replace my alternator because i spilled oil on it, ultimately had to replace the radiator too because one of the connection snapped right off . only major issue I've been having lately is my transmission starting in fifth gear. could be the reprogramming you spoke of. other wise aside from the diy because ford designed the car mines was built in japan so i contribute that to its lasting.
Also watch out for the transfer case very hard to change the oil in here. No drain plug. It has to be sucked out if it's not too late and it's already turned a lard
Thinking about buying a 2008 Mazda CX 9 but the seller says it idles rough. About how much should I expect to pay a mechanic to replace the ignition coils?
had none of these problems and have 170k. Did window gears multiple times, master cylinder, now looks like I need a rack N pinion due to torn boot and powering steering leak.
So after a 2-3 hrs driving in this summer awhile driving all the lights came on then as we got closer to home the LCD died and just about 5 blocks away the AC stopped working my amp meter showed from 14amp - 8.4 amps after all that we made it home safe and I charged the car battery backed up to 14.00 amps the next day we drove about 1-2 hrs AC on and everything the same day amp dropped to 12 amps the battery light came on that same day I’ve placed ordered for alternator before I even plan to change it out thought I take it back and get the car battery and alternator checked while I’m on the road haven’t made and changes yet. Orielly did the test while the car was on and their test machine said the battery and alternator was good? What can the problem be?
I have been having some strange noise from the engine on my cx-9 mazda 2008. However, my car just went off yesterday and once I start d car and I engage the gear and put on the ac the vibration is so high and makes serious noise from the engine. Kindly advise
My transmission slams into Drive abd Reverse. A huge boom when it shifts. Any idea what it could be? I looked at the transmission torque dogbone but it looks to be in good shape. Bushings not cracked.
+willmann30 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I have this model CX-9 2015. I had the last issue and replaced all my plugs and coils. The light still is on and it still shakes at stops and I’m park. New code is p302. What is your suggestion?
Actually I need your help in something I have struggled with for the past 4 months I have the gas line it's not coming down only coming up I have to fill up the car every time I go because I don't know the gas when we'll be empty because it's stuck and not working and I want know what's the main problem???
I do have the water issue! And had to recently replace the brain in my Mazda because it got damaged…no I shall find a video on how to claim the sunroof drains cause my floor will be wet!!! After it rains hard! Both sides.
I hate to be cliche but this list is not accurate. You can and should change the transmission fluid it is not sealed. The biggest issue is the transfer case. They go out every 50k miles so just change the fluid every 30k miles. Ac drain clogs easily, window motors go out, and the water pump is super expensive to replace but it does last a long time
NEDD HELP, MAZDA CX9 2017 MY SON OVER HEATS WHEN AC IS TURN ON FAN WONT WORK . I have actually changed my transmission fluid and filter in mine. Solved the hard shifting.

great video, as an owner of this cx9, i can attest to the water damage of the BCM module, happened to me.... Kids, clean your drain gutters

These older CX-9's are fairly reliable crossovers.
Thank you for this video. It helped a lot. I watched in the middle of the road with a flat tire
Add these too..
Tie rods, window motors, A/C drain blockage..
+Chris Munroe Thanks for the feedback!
Good feedback except on transmission issue they are definitely serviceable and despite what Factory states you should do it every 30-40 thousand miles

What about a battery drain for a year?? I can’t find out what it is and see others are having same problem. I’ve gone through four batteries.
The transmission fluid absolutely is replaceable. The fill plug is located under the air box.
I sold my 2011 XC9 today and I already miss it 😢
My 2012 has a transfer box that gets too hot and burns the lubricant (if that’s the right term) and required a 4k fix. I’ve also had misfires on two different cylinders.
There are several of the cx9 on sale online that have well into the 200k miles on them still selling for 5or 6k
Sorry that you don deliver to australia. Anyway very good info keep the best advice guys sheers!

Another problem is that from time to time the AC drain hose gets clogged and the water floods the driver's side. I've experienced it multiple times.
I'd appreciate your view on whether these are worth buying and owning.

What if your AC is draining water into your passenger floorboard

#1 is not a electrical problem!
It was a good video until he said is a seal transmission that u can’t change the oil and that is a complete lie u could service the transmission
Unos de los vehículos más malos que ya fabricado una marca , mi tío tiene una y eso vive en el taller. Dan muchos problemas de transmisión y motor.

No such thing as a sealed transmission that's a piss poor excuse to make money off of people that don't know much about cars
