I don't really enjoy his games but Tim seems like such a great guy, I'm glad he's using Kickstarter for a genuine reason and not like most developers who just use it as a crutch. More power to him, hope it all pays off! (Literally)
I haven't played a ton of Double Fine games, but every single one I've seen or played is just teeming with creative ideas. They never fail to make something unique.
Mr. Sessler, as always you're a wonderful interviewer, and what a great choice of guest! Very much my primary love of the Rev3Games channel. Thank you guys for enjoying the industry and the gems out there as we do.
Doublefine is the only game company besides Rockstar that I purchase games just based on the developer. I hopped on the bandwagon late with Costume Quest but have now played all their games. Such creative minds!
I know. That's JB is one of my favorite actors ever. I heard that there was going to be a sequel, but it got cancelled for some reason. The sequel was going to introduce more genres of music, and the environment was going to be bigger than the first. Just imagine that.
Tim is one of my favorite people in the industry. He very clearly has many of the same loves and interests as I do so his games almost always feel made for me. I wish he'd show up at the Giant Bomb offices more often.
Psychonauts is one of my favorite games of all time--but I'd honestly much rather see Tim Schafer make new IPs. Not everything needs a sequel, guys. If he did Psychonauts 2, we might not have the utterly wonderful Broken Age.
The business side of video games sounds like a slaughter. The lowly developer begging for the publisher's pennies. That has to be humbling. Glad Double Fine was able to appeal to its fans and do what they want, now.
Grim Fandango was a great game, but Calavera's story is over... while Psychonauts ended on a cliffhanger for which I will never* forgive Mr Schafer. *never - until next Psychonauts game comes out =)
Hopefully Broken Age, and other Indie games do well this year so we get a huge variety of games in 2014. A bigger variety of great games is never a bad thing.
\o/ Psychonauts 2! The world wasn't ready for a game of that magnitude... and it was pitched as a kids game(which it clearly wasn't) now we the long lived fanbase are eagerly awaiting the second game! :D
When you are Tim, and you create crazy games that are ground-breaking, I would totally cut the middle man. That way he'll be able to create what he wants and not compromise. Also, if someone makes a sequel of some of Tim's golden games without him on it, all hell is going to fall upon them
I would love to see Tim reacquire rights to Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, and his other classics. If I had the cash I'd help with a buyout in a heartbeat.
"Costume Quest" needs a sequel, its too good and can go into way more directions to be done already. And wat happened to that "Brutal Legend" dlc that was suppose to add to the ending? These games are beyond worthy of sequels.
Funny thing is this proof why having a publisher could be a good thing, not worrying about running out of money. Also Schafer is terrible in managing money. Hope the other Kickstarter that they did is better planned out.
Wasteland 2 and Torment Tides of Numenera, both by InXile. It also worth mentioning Pillars of Eternity by Obsidian and the recently released The Banner Saga by Stoic, which is surprisingly good.
***** You mean when he mentioned Brian Fargo? He's the guy behind Wasteland 2 and the new Torment (well, technically he's just the producer for the latter).
PSYCHONAUTS 2 NOW!!!!!!!!! that may not be the best way to ask. Just try and make it legal for you to make another Psychonauts game or hell, go all Mighty No. 9 and just make a super similar game to Psychonauts and use different characters
He got 3 million over what he was asking for, he pocketed the money and he scrapped the project those people paid for. From where I'm sitting the guy looks like a scumbag. Regardless of weather Broken age is good or not. What am I missing?
I don't really enjoy his games but Tim seems like such a great guy, I'm glad he's using Kickstarter for a genuine reason and not like most developers who just use it as a crutch. More power to him, hope it all pays off! (Literally)
Here's to praying for a psychonauts 2 some point in my life
I haven't played a ton of Double Fine games, but every single one I've seen or played is just teeming with creative ideas. They never fail to make something unique.
Mr. Sessler, as always you're a wonderful interviewer, and what a great choice of guest! Very much my primary love of the Rev3Games channel. Thank you guys for enjoying the industry and the gems out there as we do.
I will never forget the day he replied to my heartfelt message over Facebook.
Doublefine is the only game company besides Rockstar that I purchase games just based on the developer. I hopped on the bandwagon late with Costume Quest but have now played all their games. Such creative minds!
There really needs to be a sequel to Brutal Legend, man.
I know. That's JB is one of my favorite actors ever. I heard that there was going to be a sequel, but it got cancelled for some reason. The sequel was going to introduce more genres of music, and the environment was going to be bigger than the first. Just imagine that.
*Ahem, speaking of Psychonauts, wink wink nudge nudge...
Great interview Adam, Tim is a real good guy. Looking forward to what they come up with in the future.
Wow, really amazing interview! Tim is so funny
Tim is one of my favorite people in the industry. He very clearly has many of the same loves and interests as I do so his games almost always feel made for me. I wish he'd show up at the Giant Bomb offices more often.
Rev3Games are at their best with their interviews. Always fascinating discussions with the game creators.
Psychonauts is one of my favorite games of all time--but I'd honestly much rather see Tim Schafer make new IPs. Not everything needs a sequel, guys. If he did Psychonauts 2, we might not have the utterly wonderful Broken Age.
Tim Schafer is one of the most well spoken game creators I have ever seen in an interview.
Tim, you da man!
The business side of video games sounds like a slaughter. The lowly developer begging for the publisher's pennies. That has to be humbling. Glad Double Fine was able to appeal to its fans and do what they want, now.
watched this with classical on in the background, felt surprisingly classy
Excellent interview, as always Adam, and great guest!
I want more Grim Fandango.
Grim Fandango was a great game, but Calavera's story is over... while Psychonauts ended on a cliffhanger for which I will never* forgive Mr Schafer.
*never - until next Psychonauts game comes out =)
Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, and Iron Brigade. These are the Double Fine games that I would absolutely love more of.
I love Schafer. He is so passionate about games.
lol that handshake was so awkward at the end. Great interview!!
Great Interview, Tim Schafer looks like a stand-up guy. Looking forward to more games from this company.
Hopefully Broken Age, and other Indie games do well this year so we get a huge variety of games in 2014. A bigger variety of great games is never a bad thing.
Psychonauts 2!!!!!! The fans are already throwing money at the screen!!!!
\o/ Psychonauts 2! The world wasn't ready for a game of that magnitude... and it was pitched as a kids game(which it clearly wasn't) now we the long lived fanbase are eagerly awaiting the second game! :D
I want more Brütal Legend content, but I'm happy with anything they make.
Agreed
came here after trying to watch Scott's Internet rabbit hole. Feeling a bit tense. Hopefully Tim and Sess will be able to soothe my tensions.
I can listen to these 2 mens for hours. Please make more interviews
Great interview! Keep it up Adam.
This was pretty great, but then again it was with Tim, and Tim is pretty great. More stuff like this.
He looks like he could be related to Artie Lang.
More awesome interviews please!
Great interview!
Give me some more Costume Quest please!!!
Great interview!
so few comments? - good interview adam
When you are Tim, and you create crazy games that are ground-breaking, I would totally cut the middle man. That way he'll be able to create what he wants and not compromise. Also, if someone makes a sequel of some of Tim's golden games without him on it, all hell is going to fall upon them
Adam, everytime you talk your hands have a mind of their own, i always laugh.
I would have liked to have heard which characters had to be changed and in what way to make the investers happy.
5:21 Wait, what about Spiderweb Software that has been making isometric turn-based RPGs for at least ten years?
Just bought Broken Age on Steam :) Hopefully, I can download it soon!
Disney needs to give him the IP for Grim Fandango so he can make a sequel!
I would love to see Tim reacquire rights to Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, and his other classics. If I had the cash I'd help with a buyout in a heartbeat.
I would love to work at Double Fine, they never seem to be hiring though =\
who uploads the videos? zach?
It was funded on my birthday! What
"Costume Quest" needs a sequel, its too good and can go into way more directions to be done already. And wat happened to that "Brutal Legend" dlc that was suppose to add to the ending? These games are beyond worthy of sequels.
Dave Allen At Large! Now all Adam has to do is cut off a finger and have a whisky at his side.
Is it just me or is the volume really really low?
it's really low for me too
not for me
Shiskebab616 god dammit ross..
Double fine ftw
would kick starters be considered pimps and the developers that use them as whores? Are we the Johns?
Funny thing is this proof why having a publisher could be a good thing, not worrying about running out of money. Also Schafer is terrible in managing money. Hope the other Kickstarter that they did is better planned out.
Praise the Lard
Psychonauts point & click adventure?
D:
._.
What was the isometric RPG or the company making it that Adam mentioned? Wanna look into it.
Wasteland 2 and Torment Tides of Numenera, both by InXile. It also worth mentioning Pillars of Eternity by Obsidian and the recently released The Banner Saga by Stoic, which is surprisingly good.
Luckee Strikee
I'm aware of those already, I wanted to know the one that Adam specifically mentioned in this video.
***** You mean when he mentioned Brian Fargo? He's the guy behind Wasteland 2 and the new Torment (well, technically he's just the producer for the latter).
***** you may be thinking of Project Eternity by Obsidian, but thats not Brian Fargo, thats Chris Avellone
Luckee Strikee
Thank you, that was the name! I just could not understand what he was saying when he said it.
Is Tim Schafer the “Terry Gilliam” of video games…. ?
1 view!?! never been to a video this early!
If Psychonauts 2 doesn't come out the game industry will collapse.
I demand Psychonauts 2!
gaming version of charlie rose
More Psychonauts and more Grim Fandango. That said, new is good too :)
He looks like Bobby Moynihan's lost brother
How the once respected have fallen…
PSYCHONAUTS 2 NOW!!!!!!!!! that may not be the best way to ask. Just try and make it legal for you to make another Psychonauts game or hell, go all Mighty No. 9 and just make a super similar game to Psychonauts and use different characters
Yayyy Tim Schafer! BOOOO the lumosity plug at the end - get that pseudoscientific nonsense out of here!
I've always thought he was a cool guy.
He got 3 million over what he was asking for, he pocketed the money and he scrapped the project those people paid for. From where I'm sitting the guy looks like a scumbag. Regardless of weather Broken age is good or not. What am I missing?
Stop giving Tim Schafer money, he can't budget projects for shit.
