30 Years in the Making: The Evolution of Video Game Design - Adam Sessler Interviews Mark Cerny
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 жов 2024
- Adam sat down recently with Mark Cerny, the celebrated game designer who has been creating video games for well over thirty years now. In this eye-opening interview, Cerny discusses the delicate balance between hardware and game design, the ever-increasing need for "invisible technology," and the ways in which the gaming landscape has changed since the days of the Atari 2600.

Two of my favourite industry folks in a room together? Say it ain't so! Cerny is behind four of my favourite game franchises ever (Crash, Spyro, Jak and Ratchet). I hope Cerny stays in business for a long time to come!
i see what you did there
ionic0 i dont see
Lol fucking genius
I Think there is only one favorite folk in the room🤣
I always enjoy listening to mark cerny talk about video games.
This was one hell of an interview, wish it was longer
What a soft spoken guy, what a fantastic interview!
Mark Cerny please bring back platformers, the industry is deprived of them outside the indie scene!
i would LOVE to see more jak and daxters and ratchet and clanks, instead of knacks.
where the game design was delicious enough to be just as enjoyable about 12 years later, as they are today :D
Puzzle platformers are funny
If you're someone who likes console games and triple A's, you're starving for them
If you play PC and follow the indie scene, you're drowning in them haha
NigelGrab I played through Ratchet 2 three times over my last Summer break. It's now my 3rd favorite game of all time!
SpookyKid94 Yeah I don't mind 2-D Platformers from time to time, but it's 3-D platformers I want to see make a return. In the triple A scene we have Mario and Sonic...
well thats why the indie scene shines, those kinds of games dont need AAA budgets and teams to be developed, I think the industry is in a great state right now where we can get anything from epic AAA titles, to creative indie titles, each with different price tags and budgets
I can listen to Mark Cerny all day. His voice is so soothing.
I was about to fall into a magical slumber half way through, haha.
Man, both of these men seem like they are teeming with intelligence, experience and wisdom. I wish I could just watch like a 3 hour video of them just sharing.
Mark Cerny; gamings Mr. Rodgers. It's certainly a beautiful day in the neighborhood!
Brilliant interview Adam. Love to see more interviews like this on rev3. Mark Cerny is fantastic, he should made audio books, his voice is awesome :)
Please make Knack 2 Mark :)
Agree! It's so soothing.
***** That's okay if it was too hard for you, it was really made for more intelligent gamers.
Blackcrush0 Hahahahahahaha.
***** The way you approached a group of enemies required you to think if you played on the hardest difficulty.
***** Knack's about as far from awful as games can get, it's a great game, which I know from finishing it, but each to their own.
Personally I really want a sequel to knack, mainly because & to those that haven't played it & are interested in playing it spoilers:
Knack doesn't really find out anything really about where he comes from.
Sure you come across the stuff that looks like you & that there's other stuff a bit like you, but you learn nothing of about who created you really, so I hope a sequel comes & we learn about who made knack.
This type of videos made me smarter, keep them coming.
Brace yourself for grammar scrutiny, good sir
Jake Bolt Brace yourself for punctuation scrutiny, good sir.
mark cerny is like the bob ross of videogames in interviews ;)
Wish this interview was longer. Just covering more history and future. Would love to hear his take on VR in depth. Guy is a class act, so easy to listen to.
his such a cool guy! I can see Adam respects him too!
Adam, I just have to say it must be amazing to have people follow you around to different companies you worked with. After G4 I saw you on Machinima with Sark and crew I was stoked to see your still in the biz and now I'm subscribed to Rev3Games because you work with them. Just a quick thank you for your dedicated and knowledgeable work in this industry. You are the man.
On a serious note, this was extremely insightful and intriguing, thank you for doing this Adam
More videos like this! I wanna see some behind the scenes development tours/interviews as well. Rev3Games #1!
This is my favorite thing that Rev3Games does.
yah i love when game the gaming sites go and talk to some of the guys that have been around forever and survived. If you like MMOs you should check out gamebreakers 'Game Biz' show. A lot of it is of a similar format talking to industry vets.
Great interview and a good glimpse at the inside of video games in general.
13:37.. I see what you did there ;)
ha, I clicked this video to make that comment. I noticed it in my subs list.
Matt G (oPryzeLP) what??
I just want to add to the requests for more content like this. Real access to insight is so rare.
it's so awesome to see Adam so hyped up interviewing Mark. can really tell he's excited and a tad bit nervous lol
great video.
Great interview Adam, you are a master of your craft as always.
Knack got a lot of hate but hell I enjoyed it a lot :)
Me too, I think it was a great game.
From my experience on various forums it tends to be those people that haven't played it that hate it.
So far I've not seen anyone that's actually played it from start to finish that's hated it outright.
Haha oh wow I know a friend of mine who thought it was bad and after 10 mins he was having so much fun haha
Then let me be the first. It was obviously going to be a much more thought out game and was rushed through for launch. The story is insanely non sensical . The combat is extremely dull. The difficultly bizarre .the co op tacked on and almost necessary . And the reply value is void
I agree with story but replay value is great I've played it 3 times already on my fourth
Knack is a great game. I just think it's not what people (many critics included - and it showed in their scores) were expecting for Sony to lead their next-gen charge with. I think a lot of people who haven't played it see screen shots and videos and think "This doesn't need next-gen hardware to run." But if you play it you realize there's stuff going on under the hood that would really tax the last-gen hardware.
Wow, great interview Adam. Please keep up this level of journalism because it is refreshingly professional and absent from other interviewers.
With his voice, this guy should work for apple
nah
yeah but he has a wife
Wait...what?
Michael s hey dude whats up
Michael S *spits water on computer screen* .....WHAT!!! FUCK NO!!!
I could listen to him talk about video games all day. There's so much to learn from him. Great interview!
Mark Cerny, what a standup guy..
So intelligent and knowledgeable but at the same time so sincere and down to earth..Love the guy..
Adam is awesome too of course ..
Love you guys, love the interview :D
Thanks,Rev3Games..:D
Greatest interview ever point blank period.
Excellent excellent interview. Props to Adam for continuing to be one of the best interviewers in gaming.
This is amazing. Adam is clearly has an awesome mind for games and I'm all in with the idea of seeing more of these sorts of interviews. Not there to necessarily promote anything but discuss video games. Can't speak highly enough of this.
excellent interview. You truly shine when your years in the industry allow you the ability to draw on those experiences to ask such good question of someone who has had equal time during the crucial development periods.
1 second longer, PLEASE!!!
"It's not really about the programmer writing that code..."
OUCH ;)
This guy knows his stuff, and hearing those name-drops certainly strengthened his credibility when expressing his ideals.
That music at the beginning is so A nice night in Late April or early mid May. It sounds crazy but that's how I dig music
I feel like that guy could sell me any console.
He also speaks elegant off the cuff like that. He basically speaks as elegantly as the papers I use to spend hours writing.
Loved this interview. Mark seems like a very patient and thoughtful guy. I'm glad he's getting great things done.
This. So much more of these types of interviews, Sess.
Fantastic interview. Love this stuff so much. Speaking of the 90's Adam's interview approach reminds me of Next Generation magazine interviews. Very thoughtful and professional treatment of the subject matter.
Amazing interview, keep this up Rev3Games!
This was an amazing talk with a great person. I did not realize how many games he has worked on that sit on my shelf ready to be played at any time.
More content like this please!
Great interview! Very interesting stuff, this is why I always watch Rev3 games now aha - it certainly is the Alan Wake of Video-game Journalism.
I enjoy interviews like this, keep the good content coming.
Great interview, very interesting questions.
Keep. Doing. Interviews.
They are all great.
Aww man I wish this was longer. This was a very good interview. Great job sess. I could tell how nervous u were during the interview. I'm so jealous. Keep up the great work :)
Two people I feel needed to talk and they finally did.
Really loved this interview. Really great questions and nice atmosphere.
I love watching talks with video game makers and personalities.
Respect for helping make Spyro - One of the games of my childhood!
Really good interview Reve3. This is the kind of stuff core gamers need from time to time.
great interview! love you rev3gamesXD
I definitely saw the kid in Adam in this episode, look how happy he looks throughout the whole interview :)
Awesome interview! i want more of this kind of videos! nice job everyone at Rev3
Awesome. I asked for a Cerny interview few months ago when they interviewed MS folks. This interview was really good. Only complaint is that Cerny tends to swallow his last words of the sentence making it hard to hear. Keep it up Adam !!!
Probably one of my favorite Rev3 videos!
I'm a big fan of both Adam and Cerny. Great interview! I hope you do more of these. I really enjoyed it
Im an Xbox guy but Sony u chose a fantastic no bullshit, games orientated Lead Architect for the PS4 and I giv u props for that.
That guy was chill as fuck.
When will the three hour version be up? I love this, I don't see a lot of content like this. Everyone does reviews, but this is much more interesting.
Great interview, I agree I can't wait to see what comes from Mark Cerny next in the way of his next game, assuming he's working on a game & not doing research for the next Playstation console.
Mark Cerny is one of the very best in the industry. And so personable.
Trip down memory lane. Thanks Adam
Damn, Adam. Nice interview, watched it twice.
This was great. I could listen to him for hours
Such a great interview! Adam is a true professional and a master of his craft. I like Marc Cerny and I always thought he was a bad interview, until I watched this. Very interesting stuff.
Mark Cerny is a bona-fide gaming legend. This man's fingerprints are all over every major era of the industry.
I had a master system, and i'm sure marble madness was on it but was called Vertigo. Awesome game.
2 LEGENDS HERE!!! WOA!!
More interview like this Sess!!!!
I love when people take games seriously! Great interview!
Very interesting interview! Wouldn't have minded if it were longer.
This guy is a legend within the games industry imo
great interview. good job mr.sessler
Great interview Sess!
Enjoyed this chat, thanks!
I loved the interview, great job everyone
That's a slick shirt there, Mark.
Adam is so full of glee throughout the whole interview :P
this was great. do more of this
Great intervju, ty both
Didn't realise he had a hand in so many of my favourite games over the years. Personally I'm very excited for GDC when he will be translating the Shenmue event, two people I absolutely admire in the games industry on stage together
I really liked this video and hope Rev3 will start doing more like it.
From Software (Dark Souls Devs) final stages of development:
Do the players understand what they are doing? No
Is it too difficult? Yes
SHIP THIS BAD BOY RIGHT AWAY
I'm going to assume the length of this video is intentional. 13:37 Well played, Rev3. Well played.
Always like Marks interviews.
this is some awesome shit rev3. keep cool content like this coming
great stuff rev3
II want to see more interviews like this. I mean the lighting on Adam, and Mark's Mr Rogers likeness were very distracting, but I loved the format. I felt very engaged.
Great interview Adam. Loved it!
Great questions Adam!
Just a wonderful video!
These guys have more brains than all the guys who bought an Xbone all together. Great interview!
Smart guy this Mark Cerny, I like him. Hope he stays in the industry for a long time.
great interview
this is like my childhood of games mark
I really like how well spoken Mark Cerny is.
Very good questions, thank you.
Mark cerny predicted sonicmania in this video
Mark Cerny is a genius. He has created a console that is crushing it competitors the world over at 2:1. I recently talked with a gamespot employee and he informed me that the PS4 was outselling the bone at 2:1 ratio. He told me that they were out of stock but had tons of bones. The PS4 is selling out as soon as retailers get them. The bones are setting on the shelves collecting dust. You can find them ANYWHERE lol.
He did not create the PS4, if that is what you meant.
Wrong..... blog.us.playstation.com/2013/06/26/meet-mark-cerny-ps4-system-architect-knack-creator-busiest-man-in-gaming/
Muffin Man
He did not create stuff, he organized the concept and put it together, all the core technologies were already in place for the PS4 to kick ass.
***** I completely agree and support this statement. Also, following Muffin Man's example I think we should all start referring to X1 as "the bone"
