@@ChadDrakeTech Okay...? Doesn't change the fact that stuff like that has happened all throughout history. Men would make the mistakes, yet they would still find a way to blame the woman (or women) if there was any involved. Take for example Henry the 8th and Anne Boleyn. He was completely willing to cheat on Catherine of Aragon and upend the entire religious system in England just to divorce his queen for Anne. That's his fault for being willing to do that. But who did history blame? Anne, for being ambitious and smart enough to seize the opportunity for power. And what was she executed for? Adultery, regardless of whether or not she actually did it, when that was something Henry himself was notorious for. Funny, isn't it?
@ChadDrakeTech fictional yes but it's still a prime example of how in history men blamed women for THEIR choices and this was the norm. It wasn't some unheard of thing for the Trojans and everybody to blame the woman because that's just how it was. Fiction written in the past often says a lot about the way things were in the past.
what gives me goosebumps is that troy doesn't blame helen. troy HATES helen. troy can't blame helen because everyone knows helen is not to blame. they just "hate" helen
Nah, I get what they meant. The way maisie chose to phrase it- hate rather than blame-implies viciousness toward women in general is also the history of humanity
I can't believe I just discovered this masterpiece of a song. "Women hearts are lethal weapons. Did you hold mine and felt threatened?"??? "She begs him, he says he doesn't understand"????? Some of the best lines I've heard
lover : "and at every table, I'll save you a seat" history of man : "I save you a seat and then you say that you want to stand" I don't know why but that parallel came to mind and I can't stop thinking about it
Obsessed with this entire song, the bridge to last chorus esp BUT THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT THE LINES "You burnt down Easter Island, as if it wasn't sacred, as if it wasn't sacred to me!!!" AND HOW SHE SANG IT MAN
Love the lyrics, the story telling, love everything!!! I mean the bridge??? "I have pleaded with the powers and their plans" (love alliterations), "The men start wars, yet Troy hates Hellen" (for the greek geeks), "I save you a seat, then you say you wanna stand" (whyyy, who did this to you!!!) In pieces right over these lyrical masterpiece this is
"men start wars yet Troy hates Helen"... Im greek and this line is just everything... Men always used to blame women for all their wrong choices. As a Swiftie and new Maisie stan, I love the interpolation between the lyrics "I save you a seat and then you say you wanna stand" from this song and "at every table, I'll save you a seat" from Lover.
"So you'll lose me, the best you ever had. It's the history, tha history of man" Make me realize how much we need to listen and learn from our past to appreciate what we have in the present. And also the narrarive of other about their experience can help to trying to do it better, to hurts less ourselves and others. Love this lyric❤
This is absolutely gorgeous, one of the best songs I've heard in a while. The lyrics are just outstanding and the melody accompanies beautifully. The whole song is heartbreaking but that last verse after the bridge... that made the tears come out in the end.

I am a german men(28) ans it got me the first time listening. That feeling with this Song, lyrics, Instruments, production ans the vibe makes it to something very special. Like taylor‘s Songs…
This song is perfection. Maisie is a lyrical genius. Each line has so much thought put into it and each has so many different meanings, and they all cut through straight to the heart. They capture the essence of womanhood. The way we love and love and love no matter how much the ones we love hurt us and blame us for their own faults. And here’s the thing: Maisie Peters could write Shakespeare’s best works, but Shakespeare couldn’t even write Maisie’s worst song. Every man on this planet should be required to listen to this song, really listen. Research the lyrics and their meanings, and write a 10 page essay on it. Even then, they’ll only barely be able to grasp how important this song is, but at least they’d understand some. God I love Maisie✨💕
I'm a person who really doesn't have goosebumps with songs (that doesn't mean I don't enjoy music I just don't get a physical reaction) and this song made me feel like flying and my arm hairs are as straight as a metal bar. AMAZING
no words could describe how painfully gut wrenching and relatable this song is to me it’s horrible and fucking stratospherically beautiful all at once.
I came across this song by someone I follow. Took a look and FELL IN LOVE. This is a masterpiece and the bridge is everything! "you are still my great obsession" really slapped.
After listening to the whole album, I can say with propriety that it gives so much Taylor Swift vibe! Please, take it as a compliment! There are so many references to some of Taylor's songs, and it has the same intensity as her albums. This album's perfect! The vibes it gives, it's so good and sad at the same time! My top three is: Two Weeks Ago, Want You Back and History of Man!
It is so divinely special when a woman falls in love. Just that inescapable, all consuming, drunken, miraculous kind of love. Not to say men can’t feel the same way, but it’s just different. It goes well beyond just liking a person and wanting to spend time with them, or even getting married, it’s wanting to give everything they have to them and more. We want to shower them in gifts to see them smile, spend all of our time, give them a home, a child, a life, a person. In a world where us humans are the highest intellectual being with unlimited freedoms, we choose to fully give ourselves to you and there is not a single thing we would not do, for you. We give you our freedom, we give you our individuality, we give you our person. Well beyond just loving someone, we give them all of us, the moon and the stars. because you deserve it. Then, ultimately, the man just cannot understand. They cannot understand what they are doing wrong, when on paper they aren’t doing anything wrong. For some men, just loving someone, even to the best of their ability, just isn’t enough. They haven’t made any defined mistakes, but how can you boil down the infinite complexity of a woman’s love to a mistake or two. It is beyond reason, beyond explanation… sometimes their desire to stand in a warm room, when we would lay on coals, is all that needs to be said. Yet history will do what it is does best and continue on in spite of it all, as will Helen. Repeating the vicious cycle until one day, she met someone. Someone who tried to understand. Thus ending the history of man. One fit for her miraculous love, a miraculous man.
I love this song and I definitely relate to what you're writing here, but I've come to realize that this kind of magical obssesive fairytale love we have for men stems from codependency and childhood traumas when the only way we knew how to cope is to create a magical fantasy world and find safety and saviors and heroes through that, but when we grow up, we try to project that onto men, thinking if we just love them hard enough, through thick and thin, forgive their shortcomings and flaws they'll reward our loyalty with their undying love and affection that will heal all of our wounds and feel all the love we never had as children. How has that worked for us so far? Even the prettiest and sweetest of us still has a broken heart and been screwed over by some douche. So it's time we change the pattern. That miraculous magical love we give so freely, we should give it to ourselves first and foremost, and only allow people who enrich our lives. It's time we save ourselves and stop waiting for some magical great love to save us. We already have that power within us to heal and evolve and then men become mere companions that toss back the second they bring us hurt. It's time we become responsible for our healing and happiness.
"I SAVE YOU A SEAT and then YOU SAY YOU WANT TO STAND" THIS IS THE MOST HURTFUL LYRICS THAT I'VE EVER HEARD, my heart~~ it's like they tell you a whole heartbreaking story. Listening for the umpteenth time. It's no wonder its my favorite from the album, along with Wendy and Yoko. Love me a heartbreaking song.
